Now, by using a suite of advanced spectroscopic tools, scientists at MIT and University of Texas at Austin have for the first time captured snapshots of a light-induced metastable phase hidden from the equilibrium universe. By using single-shot spectroscopy techniques on a 2D crystal with nanoscale modulations of electron density, they were able to view this transition in real-time.

 

"With this work, we are showing the birth and evolution of a hidden quantum phase induced by an ultrashort laser pulse in an electronically modulated crystal," says Frank Gao Ph.D. '22, co-lead author on a paper about the work who is currently a postdoc at UT Austin.

 

"Usually, shining lasers on materials is the same as heating them, but not in this case," adds Zhuquan Zhang, co-lead author and current MIT graduate student in chemistry. US tribes ask Pope for records related to Indian boarding schools

 

President Fawn Sharp of the National Congress of American Indians wrote to Pope Francis, requesting the Catholic Church to work with Native American tribes to get all archives about federal Indian boarding schools in the United States.

 

โ€œI invite His Holiness and the Catholic Church to work with the National Congress of American Indians to open all records related to Federal Indian boarding schools so that someday soon American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian peoples may host an apostolic - and maybe even apologetic - journey to our tribal lands here in the United States,โ€ Sharp said in the letter on Monday.

 

Sharp stated that the Pope's visit to Canada has motivated him to deliver an apology on behalf of the Catholic Church for its role in the cultural genocide perpetrated by Canada's residential school system. He described this as the start of a new chapter for truth and reconciliation.

 

He noted that the Catholic Church is suppressing information about federal US Indian boarding schools that could lead to the discovery of truths.

 

Sharp said cooperation is the only way to hold abusers accountable or reconcile with the Catholic Church.

 

The US Department of the Interior released findings from a study in May, revealing that the US operated 408 federal Indian boarding schools and that over 500 Native American children perished in 19 of them.

 

The Interior Department anticipates that the number of deaths will rise as the investigation progresses.

 

Native Americans testify to abuse

 

Native American tribal elders and ex-students testified in Oklahoma about the sexual and physical abuse they endured in US boarding schools. The abuse included and was not limited to beatings, whippings, sexual assaults, forced haircuts, and racist slurs and nicknames.

 

The elders, coming from various states and tribes, were united on common experiences in the boarding schools designed to snatch the indigenous communities of their cultural identities, "assimilating" them into White America.

 

In a report released by the department, 400 boarding schools were identified as present between the late 18th century into the last 1960s, though most of them are closed today, with the existing ones holding different missions.

 

Riverside is one of the oldest, and it has some 800 students enrolled at it from 75 tribes across the country today.

Feds reportedly seized second Hunter Biden laptop in February

A second laptop belonging to Hunter Biden was taken by the feds back in February.

The computer was found in the Massachusetts offices of celebrity psychiatrist Dr. Keith Ablow during a raid and seized by Drug Enforcement Administration agents, according to a new report from NBC.

Ablowโ€™s medical license was suspended after he was accused of sexually exploiting patients and other professional misconduct. He has not been charged with a crime and has denied the allegations.

Hunter Biden has not been the target of the search or the investigation and his lawyer ultimately got the laptop back, the network reported. Itโ€™s unclear what was on the machine or why it would have been in Ablowโ€™s offices.

As The Post previously reported, a different Hunter Biden laptop made its way to a Delaware computer repair shop last year. The store owner later delivered its hard drive to Rudy Giuliani after he said Hunter never returned to retrieve the property.

The laptop contained a trove of emails detailing various discussions between Hunter and foreign contacts โ€” which potentially included setting up meetings with his famous father while he was vice president.

Crypto CEO pleads guilty in $21 million fraud scheme

 

The Department of Justice revealed that the CEO of Titanium Blockchain Infrastructure Services Inc. (TBIS) has pleaded guilty to his role in a $21 million cryptocurrency fraud conspiracy (DOJ).

 

The DOJ said on Monday the CEO, Michael Alan Stollery, had pled guilty to one count of securities fraud.

 

Stollery promoted his crypto enterprise as a cryptocurrency investment opportunity, enticing investors to purchase BARs, TBIS' sort of coin token service, through a series of misleading representations, according to court records.

 

According to Justice, Stollery failed to register his company's initial coin offering with the Securities and Exchange Commission and did not have a proper exemption.

 

Stollery also told authorities that he falsified his companyโ€™s white papers, which give investors an explanation of the cryptocurrency investment offering and the purpose and technology behind it.

 

He was also accused of posting bogus client testimonials on his company website and fraudulently claiming to have a good relationship with the Federal Reserve and a dozen other big companies.

 

It stated that he admitted combining investor monies with personal finances for purposes unrelated to his company, such as credit card payments and the payment of bills for his Hawaii condominium.

 

Stollery is facing up to 20 years in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced on November 18.

The proportion of Americans who report having difficulty paying their expenses has surpassed its 2020 pandemic peak, highlighting the financial toll of rising costs, according to a US Census Bureau survey.

 

In a poll conducted in late June and early July, four out of ten adults indicated that it has been somewhat or very difficult to fund normal family expenses. This is the largest number since the Census began asking about the topic in August 2020.

According to the poll, financial stress has increased significantly in all of the country's major metropolitan areas. In Dallas, for example, the proportion of respondents reporting difficulties paying bills increased from 27.9% to around 45.9% a year ago. In Detroit, the share increased by nearly 20 percentage points.

 

A report by the New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli revealed that one in eight residents delayed payments on utility bills as of March. More than 1.2 million customers statewide owed $1.8 billion, with New York City and Long Island residents accounting for a 68% total.

 

The average amount owing by residents in the state has more than doubled in two years, rising from $768 in March 2020 to $1,467 in March.

Major financial investors on Wall Street have set their sights on a new target for acquisition, buying up mobile home parks across the country only to raise the cost of rent and other fees that mobile home owners must pay.

The Daily Caller reports that such investors include private equity firms and real estate investment trusts. These buyers have turned to purchasing mobile home parks and raising rent for tenants who are either stuck at a low income or are actually disabled.

One state that has been affected is Minnesota, where out-of-state purchases of mobile home parks nearly doubled between 2015 and 2021. In 2015, just 46 percent of the stateโ€™s mobile home parks were purchased by out-of-state buyers; in 2021, that percentage skyrocketed to 81 percent. Over the course of that six-year period, rent at such parks rose by as much as 30 percent.

In Iowa, Assistant Attorney General Benjamin Bellus claims that the number of complaints from mobile home owners has increased โ€œ100-foldโ€ in recent years.

โ€œThese industries, including the mobile home park manufacturing industry, keep touting these parks, these mobile homes, as affordable housing. But itโ€™s not affordable,โ€ Bellus said to the press. โ€œYouโ€™re putting people in a snare and a trap where they have no ability to defend themselves.โ€

Another state that has been devastated by this trend is Montana; one such park is Havenpark Communities in Great Falls, which has seen the cost of rent rise dramatically since 2020. George McCarthy, CEO and president of the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, revealed that corporate investors have been spending the last eight years buying out mobile home parks to try to reach ownership of 20 percent of all mobile home lots in the United States. McCarthy particularly blamed the lending giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac for backing many of the investment loans that ultimately led to these mobile home purchases, with Freddie Mac approving $9.6 million in loans across 44 states since 2014.

Austrian politician wants Ukrainian oligarchs sanctioned

Wealthy tycoons are funding nationalist militants, lawmaker Martin Graf has claimed

 

An Austrian MP has called for the EU to impose sanctions on Ukrainian oligarchs, who he claims are the real culprits behind the military conflict between Kiev and Moscow. Martin Graf described the blocโ€™s current policy on Ukraine deeply flawed.

 

โ€œI demand that the EU authorities impose sanctions on Ukrainian oligarchs: Seize their yachts, assets and other property and use these funds to help Ukrainian refugees and to offset the losses suffered by the EU citizens due to sanctions [on Russia],โ€ he wrote in a lengthy post on Facebook on Monday, which featured excerpts from a recent interview.

 

Graf, who represents the right-wing Freedom Party of Austria (FPO), claimed the oligarchs had โ€œsucked Ukraine dryโ€ and โ€œconsistently fundedโ€ regime changes in Kiev with little regard for the consequences of political turmoil on the countryโ€™s economy and society.

 

He said these same people, who had โ€œboughtโ€ the right to do as they please, are now funding Ukrainian nationalists and illegal armed groups. The MP added that the oligarchs had โ€œlost touch with realityโ€ and โ€œled Ukraine into war.โ€

 

Graf said he supports the EU sanctions on Russian oligarchs but wondered why Brussels had not made a similar move against Ukrainian tycoons, particularly since itโ€™s the Ukrainian people and the people of Europe who are paying the price for what these people had done.

 

โ€œThese people should be punished for everything they have done to Ukraine and to the whole world now,โ€ Graf stated. The MP also accused the EU of supposedly condoning the actions of Ukrainian oligarchs by allowing them to โ€œenjoy their lives in Europe.โ€

 

โ€œIf there are no sanctions against Ukrainian oligarchs, this would de facto [serve] as evidence of corruption in the highest ranks of the EU,โ€ the Austrian MP claimed.

 

Graf served as the third president of the National Council โ€“ the lower house of the Austrian parliament โ€“ between 2008 and 2013. However, he is no stranger to controversy and was accused of having ties to far-right extremists and even had his parliamentary immunity lifted back in 2009 over allegations of embezzlement. He was never charged, though, and an investigation was discontinued.

 

His FPO party also faced scrutiny over its alleged links to Russia back in 2019. It signed a cooperation agreement with United Russia โ€“ a major Russian party, which is considered to be traditionally supportive of President Vladimir Putinโ€™s policies.

The Capitol Police shooting of Ashli Babbitt, who was killed during the 2021 Capitol incursion, was unjustified, according to a use-of-force expert.

Babbitt, 35, was shot by Capitol Police Lt. Michael Byrd, who was later cleared of any wrongdoing. She was shot in the left shoulder, and died at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

Her death is being revisited by The Epoch Times in a documentary called โ€œThe Real Story of Jan. 6,โ€ which is featured on Epoch TV.

The documentary includes commentary from Stan Kephart, whose credentials include more than 350 court appearances as an expert witness on police conduct, including excessive force, police discipline, officer safety, and crowd control.

โ€œMy conclusion โ€ฆ based on what I saw and observed in the video clips is that Ashli Babbitt was murdered,โ€ said Kephart, who served 42 years in law enforcement and was director of security for the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.

โ€œShe was shot and killed under color of authority by an officer who violated not only the law but his oath and committed an arrestable offense,โ€ Kephart said.

Kephart said that to him, nothing in the video showed Byrd should have felt in danger from Babbitt, a supporter of former President Donald Trump, who was 5-foot-2 and weighed 110-pounds.

โ€œIn order for lethal force to be authorized, the officer has to be able to articulate that he or she was in fear of losing his life, was about to be killed, or grievously injured,โ€ Kephart said in the documentary, according to The Epoch Times.

โ€œThere is nothing I saw in that film that would indicate that was possible or probable from what unfolded,โ€ he said.

Byrdโ€™s attorney, Mark Schamel, defended Byrd, saying Kephartโ€™s conclusion was โ€œunsupported and erroneous.โ€

โ€œWhen Ms. Babbitt entered through the broken window and entered the inner protected area, wearing a backpack and refusing the verbal commands of multiple armed federal officers with weapons drawn, the threat she posed was clear and Lt. Byrd, as the first officer in the final line of defense, was absolutely justified in his use of force,โ€ he said, according to The Epoch Times.

Aaron Babbitt, Ashliโ€™s husband, said former New York City Police Commissioners Bernard Kerik and Ray Kelly have agreed with Kephart, according to The Epoch Times.

โ€œI loved hearing that from him. Heโ€™s obviously well-versed in the use of force,โ€ Babbitt told The Epoch Times. โ€œHeโ€™s clearly a very smart man who has been in that business for a long time. He should be listened to.โ€

Babbitt disputed the claim that his late wife, who was draped in a Trump flag at the time of the shooting, โ€œrefusedโ€ verbal commands from Byrd or anyone.

Witness testimony Iโ€™ve read, police included, said they heard no warning,โ€ Babbitt told The Epoch Times, saying the shooting was โ€œcomplete disregard for human life and not following the use-of-force continuum.โ€

A Department of Justice investigation found there was insufficient evidence that Byrd used excessive force when he shot and killed Babbitt.

McDonaldโ€™s reveals cost of Russia exit

The fast-food giant sold its assets to a local buyer

 

The fast-food restaurant chain McDonaldโ€™s posted a 3% drop in revenue in the first half of this year, partly due to its exit from the Russian market.

 

According to the companyโ€™s latest corporate report, โ€œpre-tax charges related to the sale of the Company's business in Russiaโ€ amounted to $1.3 billion in the first six months of this year.

 

McDonaldโ€™s temporarily closed restaurants in Russia in March joining an exodus of foreign firms in the wake of Western sanctions. Restaurants remained closed throughout the companyโ€™s sale to a local buyer in mid-June. โ€œIn order to ensure a successful transfer of the business in Russia to a buyer, the Company continued to pay employees and make lease payments through the date of the signed sale agreementโ€, McDonaldโ€™s said.

 

The global burger giant, which had over 800 locations in Russia, sold its assets to businessman Alexander Govor, who owned a company franchise, for an undisclosed amount, which he said, was much lower than the market price.

 

The restaurants have since reopened in Russia under the brand Vkusno i Tochka or Just Tasty.

Russia to quit International Space Station after 2024

Moscow has plans to begin building its own space facility, Roscosmos chief says

 

Russia will withdraw from the International Space Station (ISS) project with the West after 2024, the new head of the countryโ€™s space agency Roscosmos, Yury Borisov, said on Tuesday.

 

Moscow intends to fulfill all its obligations to foreign partners as part of the ISS project, but โ€œthe decision to withdraw from this station after 2024 has been made,โ€ Borisov told President Vladimir Putin during a meeting at the Kremlin.

 

โ€œI think, by that time, weโ€™ll start putting together a Russian orbital station,โ€ the space boss added.

 

According to Borisovโ€™s vision, Russiaโ€™s manned space flights should form part of a systematic scientific program, so that each mission would provide the country with new knowledge.

 

The previous head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, had predicted that the ISS, which NASA plans to operate until 2030, would โ€œfall apartโ€ by that time unless โ€œhuge amounts of moneyโ€ are invested in its repair.

 

But efforts to keep the station in orbit are no longer effective for Russia due to the current geopolitical environment, he pointed out.

 

Borisov also acknowledged in April that the Russian station modules have exhausted their lifespans.

 

The ISS was launched in 1998 as a joint effort by Russian, American, Japanese, Canadian and European space agencies. Itโ€™s divided into Russian and American sections, with the latter being run by the US and other participants of the project.

 

Roscosmos had earlier shared the sketches of its replacement for the ISS, the Russian Orbital Service Station (ROSS). Itโ€™s planned to make the station automated, with the cosmonauts only arriving there to service and replace the equipment. ROSS will consist of four modules and a spacecraft-maintenance platform. Itโ€™s being designed to host a crew of two to four people.

The European Union and the United States are competing against each other in taking unfriendly measures against Russia, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday.

 

The 27-nation bloc and Washington are both running out of restrictions to impose on Russia, which is why they are making "unreasonable decisions", Peskov stressed.

 

"They are literally competing with each other in taking various anti-Russian and unfriendly measures towards us," Peskov told reporters.

 

"We [โ€ฆ] see that they are running out of an arsenal of some measures that - as they see it - are capable of putting pressure on us and forcing us to change our position, which is an erroneous judgment, and more and more irrational, unreasonable, and difficult to explain decisions made," he underlined.

 

Jewish Agency case legal issue

The case of the Jewish Agency for "Israel" (Sokhnut) in Russia is an issue of a legal dimension, and it should not be politicized, Peskov underscored.

 

"There are questions from the point of view of compliance with Russian legislation to Sokhnut, and there is no need to politicize this situation and project this situation onto the entire range of Russian-Israeli relations," he told reporters.

 

His statements come a day after Israeli media reported that tensions are on the rise between "Tel Aviv" and Moscow over Russia's closure of the Jewish Agency for "Israel's" work in the country.

 

A Moscow court said last week that the justice ministry had requested the "dissolution" of the Jewish Agency for legal violations that were not specified, setting a hearing on July 28.

 

Just hours earlier, the Israeli occupation's Ambassador to Moscow met with the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and asked for updates on the Russian Justice Ministry's probe into the Jewish Agency, Israeli newspaper Walla! reported last Wednesday.

 

Relations between "Israel" and Russia have witnessed tension in recent months, as the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the Israeli ambassador to Russia, Alexander Ben Zvi, over a statement by Yair Lapid when he was foreign minister in April, when he condemned Russia's practices in Ukraine, describing them as "war crimes".

The World Economic Forum (WEF) is calling for an end to private car ownership. A recently published paper calls for an end to โ€œwastefulโ€ private vehicle ownership in favor of public transportation and communal cars.

โ€œThe average car or van in England is driven just 4% of the time,โ€ the WEF paper states. It then calls on car owners to sell their vehicle because, โ€œCar sharing platforms such as Getaround and BlueSG have already seized that opportunity to offer vehicles where you pay per hour used.โ€

Ending private car ownership is essential to addressing climate change, the WEF argues. The forum goes on to advocate for the same principles to be applied to city and home designs as well.

โ€œA design process that focuses on fulfilling the underlying need instead of designing for product purchasing is fundamental to this transition,โ€ the WEF wrote. โ€œThis is the mindset needed to redesign cities to reduce private vehicles and other usages.โ€

A number of European nations and U.S. states have already passed legislation that will ban the sale of non-electric cars as soon as 2030. Washington, New York and California have already passed such measures while a growing number of EU member states have done the same.

In Ireland, the government has told citizens that they will be packed into densely populated cities in order to combat climate change. Drivers will be forced off the roads as part of a plan that will โ€œrevolutionizeโ€ peopleโ€™s lifestyle and behaviors.

In addition, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has directed global governments to drastically cut oil supply to domestic consumers in order to encourage compliance by โ€œnudgingโ€ people out of their private cars.

Polish mercenaries killed by Russian missile strike โ€“ Moscow

More than 40 foreign mercenaries, most of whom were Polish citizens, have been killed by a missile strike in Donbass, Russiaโ€™s Ministry of Defense claimed on Tuesday. They add to a growing list of foreign combatants who have lost their lives fighting for Ukraine.

 

High-precision air-based missiles struck a temporary deployment point of Ukraineโ€™s International Legion units near Konstantinovka in the Donetsk Peopleโ€™s Republic (DPR), and โ€œtook out over 40 foreign mercenaries, most of them Poles,โ€ the ministry said in a statement.

 

Last week, Russia said its armed forces had killed up to 250 soldiers of fortune in the same settlement, destroying a number of military vehicles.

 

The Russian military also carried out an air raid on positions of the Ukrainian Armyโ€™s 72nd Mechanized Brigade in the DPR village of Zaitsevo, taking out more than 70 โ€œnationalistsโ€ and one ammunition depot.

 

The Defense Ministry reported that high-precision strikes near the city of Nikolayev in southern Ukraine had destroyed one artillery battalion of the 59th Ukrainian Motorized Infantry Brigade. The brigade sustained losses of more than 70% of its personnel and military equipment, according to the ministry's briefing.

 

Kievโ€™s international military unit was created in late February at the request of President Vladimir Zelensky, and is officially known as the International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine.

 

According to data from the Russian Defense Ministry, as of June 17, 6,956 foreign citizens from 64 countries have arrived in Ukraine to fight for the country since Russia attacked on February 24. Some 1,956 of those have been killed, while 1,779 have left the country, the ministry said at the time.

The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed Tuesday that the Russian military has attacked a place of deployment of "the Foreign Legion" in Donbass and killed over 40 militants.

 

In a statement, the Defense Ministry indicated that "over 40 foreign mercenaries, mostly Poles, were killed by a strike of high-precision air-launched missiles at the temporary deployment point of the Foreign Legion units near the Konstantinovka village of the Donetsk Peopleโ€™s Republic."

 

In a similar context, Russian Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov underlined that the spread of mercenaries and weapons from Ukraine is an extremely dangerous threat to the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

 

At a meeting with the Prosecutor General of Tajikistan, Yusuf Rahmon, in Dushanbe, Krasnov warned that "today, our countries are facing new, extremely dangerous threats. Among them: the participation of citizens of the CIS states in hostilities as mercenaries, the distribution of weapons, ammunition, drugs."

 

According to Krasnov, CIS countries and law enforcement agencies need to update their interaction schemes to improve work efficiency in order to eliminate these threats.

 

In early July Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu confirmed that tens of foreign mercenaries have been killed in Ukraine.

 

Shoigu said that as a "result of the successful offensive" by both the Russian and Donbass republics' forces, โ€œthe number of foreign mercenaries and employees of private military companies operating in the country has decreased.โ€

 

The Defense Minister previously said the arms supplied by the West to Ukraine were ending up on the black market and spreading across West Asia.

 

Similarly, Russian Military Spokesperson Major General Igor Konashenkov last month said that hundreds of foreign mercenaries in Ukraine have been killed by Russian long-range precision weapons โ€œshortly after their arrival at the places where they were undergoing additional training and where the tactical units were coordinated.โ€

 

It is noteworthy that the Russian Defense Ministry data revealed that 6,956 foreign citizens from 64 countries arrived in Ukraine to fight alongside Ukrainian troops between February 24 and June 17.

 

Around 1,956 of those have been killed, while 1,779 have left the country, the Ministry highlighted.

Are they going to invest in China, India, Japan, South Korea, and the European Union? The United States has to lead the world in the production of these chips.โ€

 

The bipartisan bill, dubbed "Chips-plus", includes more than $50 billion in semiconductor manufacturing funding over the next five years, as well as a 25% tax credit for new chip production through 2026.

 

This comes after Speaker Nancy Pelosi revealed that the US Senate was prepared to review a semiconductor chips bill with the aim to help raise American competitiveness.

 

The Senate voted by a large margin to start the debate on legislation to give more than $52 billion in grants to the US semiconductor industry.

 

"With this package, the United States returns to its status as a world leader in the manufacturing of semiconductor chips," she said in a press release, adding that this is "an economic necessity to lower costs for consumers and to win in the 21st-century economy, as well as a national security imperative as we seek to reduce our dependence on foreign manufacturers."

EU member states, according to a draft document, said binding targets should be set based on the extent of dependence each country has on Russian supplies and the volumes of gas already delivered to storage facilities.

 

It is noteworthy that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban had considered that the European Union has "shot itself in the lungs" with imprudent economic sanctions on Russia, which risk destroying the European economy if not rolled back.

 

On May 12, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the West's continued obsession with anti-Russian sanctions will inevitably lead to more complex and intractable consequences for the EU and its citizens, as well as for the poorest countries in the world, which face the risk of starvation.

Police returned to the home in search of the sheets depicted in the images.

 

When officers went inside, they found an adult woman chained at the neck to a stripper pole in the living room, prosecutors said.

 

Travis was forcing the woman to work as a prostitute and did the same to three other women, officials said.

 

When the sex-trafficking victims tried to leave the home, Travis restrained them with a chain.

Most of the passages of the Protocols have been taken from a French political satire that never mentioned Jews โ€“ Maurice Jolyโ€™s Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu (1864). The phrasing between the two texts is almost identical.

 

The protocols would come to play a significant part in the Jewish Holocaust. They had a serious influence on Adolf Hitler who mentioned them frequently in Mein Kampf. The Nazi party published 23 editions of the Protocols before the start of World War II.

 

In 1935 a Swiss court declared the Protocols as โ€œridiculous nonsenseโ€ and โ€œobvious forgeriesโ€. The US Senate issued a report in 1964 that the Protocols were fabricated. However even while the Protocols were ridiculed by many, it also had quite a following. In 1974 it was published in India under the title International Conspiracy Against Indians. In 2004 the Protocols were published in Japan. In 2005 an edition of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, authorized by the Syrian Ministry of Information, claims that the Elders of Zion coordinated September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States.

 

It is worth noting that the Bible is only mentioned once in the Protocols and that the Old Testament is quoted in Latin. The Protocols also claim that the Jewish elites had a hand in the French revolutions. However, this is cited as evidence largely discrediting the work of the protocols. At the time of the French revolution, there were only a handful of Jews who were, by and large, the subjects of antisemitism. However, this can also be construed in the opposite light, that there was antisemitic behavior followed by unrest and upheaval, meaning that the antisemitism was proven correct.

 

Despite the declaration that the Protocols are a forgery, there are still many followers, described as Neo-Nazi, White Supremacists and Holocaust deniers. Books based on the Holocaust are disseminated worldwide and has a surprising following in Japan, where there are little Jews. The Arab and Islamic world actively teach the protocols to children. It is often used to justify terrorism against Israeli citizens. There is no denying that it is a forgery, however a very accurate one.

A Trump Backerโ€™s Downfall as the Target of a Jan. 6 Conspiracy Theory

Ray Epps became the unwitting face of an attempt by pro-Trump forces to promote the baseless idea that the F.B.I. was behind the attack on the Capitol.

IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS โ€” Up a winding country road, in a trailer park a half-mile from a cattle ranch, lives a man whose life has been ruined by a Jan. 6 conspiracy theory.

Ray Epps has suffered enormously in the past 10 months as right-wing media figures and Republican politicians have baselessly described him as a covert government agent who helped to instigate the attack on the Capitol last year.

Strangers have assailed him as a coward and a traitor and have menacingly cautioned him to sleep with one eye open. He was forced to sell his business and his home in Arizona. Fearing for his safety and uncertain of his future, he and his wife moved into a mobile home in the foothills of the Rockies, with all of their belongings crammed into shipping containers in a high-desert meadow, a mile or two away.

โ€œAnd for what โ€” lies?โ€ Mr. Epps asked the other day with a look of pained exhaustion. โ€œAll of this, itโ€™s just been hell.โ€

Almost from the moment that a violent mob stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, allies of former President Donald J. Trump have sought to shift the blame for the attack away from the people who were in the pro-Trump crowd that day to any number of scapegoats.

First they pointed at antifa, the leftist activists who have a history of clashing with Mr. Trumpโ€™s backers but who did not show up when the Capitol was breached. Then they tried to fault the F.B.I., which, according to those who spread the baseless tale, planned the attack to provoke a crackdown on conservatives.

Mr. Epps, 61, was not just a bystander on Jan. 6. He traveled to Washington to back Mr. Trump, was taped urging people to go to the Capitol and was there himself on the day of the assault. But through a series of events that twisted his role, he became the face of this conspiracy theory about the F.B.I. as it spread from the fringes to the mainstream.

Obscure right-wing media outlets, like Revolver News, used selectively edited videos and unfounded leaps of logic to paint him as a secret federal asset in charge of a โ€œbreach teamโ€ responsible for setting off the riot at the Capitol.

The stories about Mr. Epps were quickly seized on by the Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who gave them a wider audience. They were also echoed by Republican members of Congress like Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Senator Ted Cruz of Texas.

Eventually, Mr. Trump joined the fray, mentioning Mr. Epps at one of his political rallies and lending fuel to a viral Twitter hashtag, #WhoIsRayEpps.

After months of watching from the shadows as public figures he once respected โ€” Mr. Trump among them โ€” tarred his name and destroyed his reputation, Mr. Epps decided that he wanted to answer that question for himself.

In a daylong interview, sitting in his air-conditioned recreational vehicle with his wife, Robyn, and their two Shih Tzus beside him, Mr. Epps described himself as a father, a former Marine and a staunch but disillusioned conservative whose leaders had betrayed him. He granted the interview on the condition that the location of his new home not be disclosed.

โ€œI am at the center of this thing, and itโ€™s the biggest farce thatโ€™s ever been,โ€ he said. โ€œItโ€™s just not right. The American people are being led down a path. I think it should be criminal.โ€

To that end, Mr. Epps and his wife have been searching for a lawyer to help them file a defamation lawsuit against several of the people who have spread the false accounts. Should they end up doing so, they would join a list of other individuals and companies โ€” most notably, the voting machine producer Dominion Voting Systems โ€” in using the courts to push back on the rampant disinformation that emerged again and again during Mr. Trumpโ€™s efforts to overturn the election.

โ€œThe truth needs to come out,โ€ Mr. Epps explained, petting his dogs.

While Mr. Epps was a participant in some of the events that unfolded on Jan. 6, the claim that he inspired the Capitol riot in a โ€œfalse flagโ€ plot is solely based on the fact that he has never been arrested and therefore must be under the protection of the government.

But scores, if not hundreds, of people who appear to have committed minor crimes that day were investigated by the F.B.I. but have not been charged or taken into custody.

Mr. Epps said that he had acted stupidly at times when he and one of his sons took a last-minute trip to Washington for Mr. Trumpโ€™s speech about election fraud. But he said that he had managed to avoid arrest because he reached out to the F.B.I. within minutes of discovering that agents wanted to speak with him.

On Jan. 8, 2021, just two days after the Capitol was attacked, Mr. Epps learned from a family member that the F.B.I. had issued a be-on-the-lookout alert in his name. He said he immediately called the bureauโ€™s National Threat Operations Center, and his phone records show that he spoke to agents there for nearly an hour.

The F.B.I. has repeatedly declined to comment on Mr. Epps, but his account of calling the operations center โ€” and of sitting down for a formal discussion with federal agents in March 2021 โ€” is backed by transcripts of those interviews reviewed by The New York Times.

The interview transcripts show that Mr. Epps told agents that he had spent much of his time at the Capitol seeking to calm down other rioters, an assertion supported by multiple video clips.

Mr. Epps, who questioned the results of the election, was also interviewed twice by the House select committee on Jan. 6. After his dealings with the panel were completed, officials released a statement saying he had told them that he never worked as an asset for, or an employee of, any federal law enforcement agency.

One of the moments Mr. Epps said he regrets most from his stay in Washington took place the night before the Capitol attack, when he joined his son and a friend for a pro-Trump rally at Black Lives Matter Plaza. During the event, he was videotaped by a right-wing provocateur encouraging people to go inside the Capitol on Jan. 6 in what he described, even at the time, as a form of peaceful protest.

The clip has been used to depict Mr. Epps as a man who not only urged people to riot at the Capitol but also then evaded prosecution. The Justice Department has not publicly addressed its decision not to charge him, but the legal definition of incitement requires a personโ€™s words to cause an immediate threat of danger, not one that could possibly occur the following day.

On Jan. 6 itself, Mr. Epps, believing he could stop the violence at the Capitol, inserted himself into a conflict between the police and members of the pro-Trump mob that is widely considered to be the tipping point of the attack.

He can be seen in videos from around 1 p.m. that day accosting a rioter named Ryan Samsel, who had already started to confront officers behind a metal barricade on the west side of the Capitol. Mr. Epps said he intervened in the conflict to keep Mr. Samsel from attacking the police and tried to tell Mr. Samsel that the officers were merely doing their jobs. Mr. Samsel gave an identical account to the F.B.I. when he was arrested weeks later.

Mr. Epps also said he regretted sending a text to his nephew, well after the violence had erupted, in which he discussed how he helped to orchestrate the movements of people who were leaving Mr. Trumpโ€™s speech near the White House by pointing them in the direction of the Capitol.

Mr. Epps further acknowledged that while he moved past barricades into a restricted area of the Capitol grounds, he did not go into the building itself. The vast majority of those who did not enter the building or commit additional crimes have not been charged.

By the time the violence started spreading, Mr. Epps had already left the Capitol, having helped to get a sick protester to safety.

The problems began for Mr. Epps almost as soon as Revolver News published its first article about him in October. Suddenly, there were emailed death threats; trespassers on his property demanding โ€œanswersโ€ about Jan. 6; and acquaintances, fellow members of his church, even family members who disowned him, he said.

Things became significantly worse after Mr. Carlson and prominent politicians began to amplify the lies.

In late December, Ms. Epps discovered shell casings on the ground near the bunkhouse of the farm-style wedding venue they owned in Arizona, suggesting that someone had been shooting at the building. Then, in January, Mr. Epps received a letter from someone claiming to have been brought into the country by a Mexican drug cartel.

The writer said he had overheard some cartel members talking about killing Mr. Epps.

โ€œI right on paper to tell you need to be look out,โ€ the letter said in broken English. โ€œThese drug gang people very bad people.โ€

Whether it was real or just a demented joke, Ms. Epps went into hiding, leaving Mr. Epps to arm himself and run the family business for a while through his security team. Ultimately, the couple sold the business and their ranch-style house, losing hundreds of thousands of dollars and wrecking the arrangements they had made for their retirement.

โ€œIt has a been a nightmare,โ€ Ms. Epps said.

After leaving Arizona for the mountains months ago, the Eppses have not done much. They manage to spend time with their children โ€” and some of their 37 grandchildren โ€” but mostly keep to themselves. Mr. Epps has taken to wearing a wide-brimmed hat that hides his face. If people at the gas station or grocery store say he looks familiar, he will usually smile and then be on his way.

While he wants to clear his name, he is under no illusion that he will ever manage to divorce it fully from the lies.

โ€œTheyโ€™ll always be associated,โ€ Mr. Epps said. โ€œYou canโ€™t convince some people. There are extremists out there that youโ€™ll never convince them that theyโ€™re wrong.โ€
