Dr. Esvelt: The only way that you could get something so divergent would be to computationally design it, and synthesize it. Which could certainly have been done. From what data set…and why? Why would you do such a thing? Unless you want to know what the ancestral virus was like…there are basic science reasons that you might want to know where they all came from…[but] why would you run the test to determine if something was pandemic-capable?
