DOD ‘Wiped’ Phones of Senior Trump Officials—Jan. 6 Communications No Longer Accessible

Some senior Trump administration officials had their phones “wiped” by the Department of Defense (DOD) and the U.S. Army after the former president left office, meaning messages that were sent around the time of the Jan. 6 Capitol breach are no longer accessible, court filings show.

The DOD acknowledged that the phones belonging to former Pentagon officials had been wiped as part of a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit filed by American Oversight, a non-profit watchdog organization.

American Oversight had sought the communications that those officials had with Trump, former Vice President Pence, Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, or anyone communicating on their behalf on Jan. 6.

The watchdog group submitted the FOIA requests pertaining to the records on Jan. 12, 2021, six days after the breach of the Capitol building.

Specifically, FOIA requests sought communications from former acting Secretary of Defense Chris Miller, former chief of staff Kash Patel, and former Secretary of the Army Ryan McCarthy, Paul Ney, the Defense Department’s general counsel; and James E. McPherson, the Army’s general counsel.

However, in a court filing roughly a year after the request, the Army stated that “when an employee separates from DOD or Army he or she turns in the government issued phone, and the phone is wiped” and that “for those custodians no longer with the agency, the text messages were not preserved and therefore could not be searched.”

The court filing noted, however, that “it is possible that particular text messages could have been saved into other records systems such as email.”

Secret Service Swipe

The DOD’s admission in the filings creates further transparency issues regarding the Jan. 6 select committee’s investigation into the events of that day in 2021 and how the government responded.

It also comes shortly after it was revealed that U.S. Secret Service text messages sent on the day the breach had also been deleted.

A number of texts from secret service members from Jan. 5 and Jan. 6, “were erased as part of a device-replacement program,” Joseph Cuffari, the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general, told lawmakers in a July letter.

Last week, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) wrote to Attorney General Merrick Garland and asked him to take control of the investigation into the missing DHS and Secret Service messages.

“It’s just astounding to believe that the agency did not understand the importance of preserving its records—particularly [with regards] to the top officials that might have captured: what they were doing when they were doing it, why they were doing, it on that day,” Heather Sawyer, executive director of American Oversight, told CNN.

The U.S. Army Public Affairs media relations chief, Col. Cathy Wilkinson, said in a statement to the news outlet: “It is our policy not to comment on ongoing litigation.”

In a statement to the Washington Examiner, the Defense Department also declined to comment “on pending litigation.”

American Oversight is now calling for an investigation into the DOD’s failure to preserve text messages and other communications from Jan. 6.

Ukraine SitRep - On The Ground Report - Ukrainian Frontline Collapses

Below is a slightly edited machine translation of a piece which appeared yesterday on the Ukrainian side censor.net. The piece was promoted by Yuri Butusov, a well known Ukrainian military correspondent. It is originally a social media post by someone who was on the frontline in Pisky, immediately northwest of Donetsk city.

Context:

Over the last two to three months the Ukrainian side has used its positions in the vicinity of Donetsk city to more or less randomly shell the civilian population on the Russian affiliated side. After some serious protests the Russian military command agreed to launch a dedicated counter-artillery operation to shut down the deadly Ukrainian harassment.

Its daily 'clobber reports', here is yesterday's, have since included lines like these on nearly each and every day:

As part of counter-battery warfare 2 artillery batteries of Giatsint howitzers near Dzerzhinsk and Novhorodskoye, Donetsk People's Republic have been hit.

4 platoons of Grad MLRS and 9 artillery platoons at firing positions near Seversk, Kirovo, Artemovsk, Avdeevka, Peski, Orlovka, Shakhterskoye, Velikaya Novoselka in Donetsk People's Republic, Dobropolie in Zaporozhye Region, Shirokoye, Bereznevatoye in Nikolaev Region, Russkaya Lozovaya and Nortsovka in Kharkov Region.

The systematic counter-artillery campaign has seriously deteriorated the already rare Ukrainian fire power.

The Russian side has also changed the primary direction of its thrust from the northern front of the Sievierdonetsk-Lysichansk-Siversk direction to a push further south. The current offensive operation is concentrated north-west and west of Donetsk city in the direction of Avdivka. There is an envelope operation going on its north and south to surround that extremely heavily fortified town.

Delaware Allowing Widespread Mail-In Voting Violates Constitution

Delaware’s Legislature used its emergency powers and the excuse of the pandemic to authorize no-excuse mail-in voting for 2020, but now, without bothering to lean on Covid as a crutch, theDemocrat-controlled state legislature has passed a law providing for an unlimited right to vote by mail as well as authorizing same-day voter registration. A new lawsuit filed last week, however, seeks to have both laws declared unconstitutional under the Delaware constitution before this year’s midterm elections.

Before the 2020 election, the Delaware General Assembly approved no-excuse mail-in voting, even though Article V, Section 4A of the state constitution expressly provides for absentee voting only where a qualified elector is “unable to appear to cast his or her ballot” “at the regular polling place of the election district,” under limited, enumerated circumstances. Specifically, absentee voting is authorized under the state constitution if an elector cannot vote at his polling place “either because of being in the public service of the United States or of this State, or his or her spouse or dependents when residing with or accompanying him or her, because of the nature of his or her business or occupation, because of his or her sickness or physical disability, because of his or her absence from the district while on vacation, or because of the tenets or teachings of his or her religion.”

The Republican State Committee of Delaware and two registered Delaware voters challenged the no-excuse absentee voting provision before the 2020 general election. While the Delaware Department of Elections agreed that the list of citizens entitled to vote by absentee ballot, set forth in Article V, Section 4A, was meant to be exhaustive, the state argued that the legislature properly invoked its emergency powers under Article XVII, Section 1. That section provides that “in order to ensure the continuity of State and local governmental operations in periods of emergency resulting from … disease,” the state legislature shall have the power “to adopt such other measures as may be necessary and proper for ensuring the continuity of governmental operations.”

A Delaware state court found that the legislature had the authority under Article XVII, Section 1 to authorize no-excuse mail-in-voting, in light of the “epidemic of airborne disease” and the “health emergency declared by the Governor.” But asthe court stressed, the statute at issue applied “only to the 2020 primary, general, and any special elections,” and by its terms expired on January 12, 2021.

Now with the 2022 midterms mere months away, however, the legislature late last month passed a new statute, signed by Delaware’s Democrat Gov. John Carney, that authorizes no-excuse absentee voting. Specifically, Section 5603A provides that to vote by mail, a Delaware elector must submit a completed, signed, and dated application that includes either the voter’s last four digits of his social security number or the number of the voter’s state-issued driver’s license or non-driver identification card number. Upon determining that the applicant is qualified to vote under the state’s election code, the newly passed statute requires the Department of Elections to provide the voter with a mail ballot for the election district in which he resides, along with instructions for completing and returning the ballot, and a ballot envelope.

Unlike the 2020 statute that relied on the legislature’s emergency power under the Delaware constitution, the General Assembly did not rely on Covid or its emergency constitutional authority to ensure “the continuity of State and local governmental operations” to pass Section 5603A. And there isno end dateto the mail-in voting law. Rather, the statute converts Delaware to a no-excuse mail-in-voting state, notwithstanding the constitutional limits to absentee voting.

The Delaware Legislature, in addition to authorizing no-excuse mail-in voting, passed a statute eliminating the requirement that voters register to vote by “the fourth Saturday prior to the date of the election” and authorized same-day voter registration. The General Assembly also removed the statutory provision requiring registered voters to update address or name changes the “day prior to a primary or general” election, permitting such changes on election day.

Again, the state constitution addresses the time period for voter registration, with Article V, Section 4 providing that “the General Assembly shall enact uniform laws for the registration of voters in this State entitled to vote under this article.” Significantly, the Delaware constitution mandates that there “be at least two registration days in a period commencing not more than one hundred and twenty days, nor less than sixty days before, and ending not more twenty days, nor less than ten days before, each General Election.” That section also provides that registrations “may be corrected at any time prior to the day of holding the election.” Further, the Delaware Supreme Court previously made clear that Section 4 of Article V “provides that all questions of the qualifications of voters should be determined before election day.”..

In response to these state statutes, the Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF) filed suit on behalf of two Delaware residents, including a candidate for state representative, against the Delaware Department of Elections, arguing the no-excuse absentee voting and same-day registration violates the Delaware constitution.

“These mail balloting and same day registration laws conflict with the Delaware Constitution,” PILF President J. Christian Adams said. “States cannot pass laws that conflict with their constitutions. It’s egregious that Inspectors of Elections are forced to choose between obeying the same day registration law or following the state constitution. Delaware lawmakers should read their own constitution before passing election laws.”

While the legislature’s adoption of no-excuse mail-in voting and same-day registration seems to represent a clear violation of the plain language of the Delaware constitution, the state Supreme Court will be the ultimate arbiter of the question. And currently, all five Delaware Supreme Court justices were appointed by Democrat governors.

Of course, politics does not necessarily dictate the outcome of cases, and given the clarity of the Delaware constitution, the state Supreme Court justices may nonetheless hold that their fellow Democrats in the legislative branch overstepped their authority. But at least in Pennsylvania, where the constitution was similarly clear, thePennsylvania Supreme Court yesterday in a 5-2 decision upheld the legislature’s approval of no-excuse voting, with the five-justice majority consisting of Democrat justices and the sole two Republicans in dissent.

The outcome of the Pennsylvania case shows how far activist justices were willing to go to reach a desired result, even when it conflicted with the plain language of their state constitution. Serving as an imam of a mosque that was credibly accused of serving as a conduit for terror financing and as the leader of a national organization with roots in the Muslim Brotherhood should disqualify someone from serving on a commission charged with monitoring abuses of religious freedom. And downplaying the horrors of a well-documented genocide fueled by religious animosity should also be a deal breaker. But under the Biden administration, these types of Islamist affiliations are résumé builders and genocide denial is no big thing.

This was demonstrated last month when the White House appointed Mohamed Hag Magid, a prominent imam from Virginia,to serve on the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF)last month. Established by Congress in 1998, USCIRF is charged with monitoring violations of the right to religious freedom throughout the world and makes recommendations on how to respond to these violations to the president, the U.S. State Department, and to Congress. According to its website, the nine-member commission is “appointed by either the President or Congressional leaders of each political party, supported by a non-partisan professional staff.”

In its announcement of Magid’s appointment, the White House highlighted his status as Executive Imam of the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) Center in Sterling, Virginia. In the early 2000s, the ADAMS center was named in a federal investigation as part of the SAAR network, an alleged terror finance organization funded by Saudi donors.

To further buttress Magid’s appointment, the White House invoked his tenure as president of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) which was founded by members of the Muslim Brotherhood in 1981. During his time as president, Magid gave an award to Dawud Walid, the executive director of CAIR-Michigan. Prior to receiving the ISNA reward, Walid declared, “Who are those who incurred the wrath of Allah? They are the Jews.” ISNA, by the way, was founded by members of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Magid’s episode of genocide denial took place at a 2004 conference in Georgetown where he stated that reports about the mass-killings of Christians by the Islamist regime in Khartoum were “some kind of exaggeration,” and that “things escalated and people called it genocide.”

One of the groups that called what happened in Sudan “genocide” was USCIRF, the commission he now helps oversee. In 2001, USCIRF declared that religion was a major factor in Sudan’s civil war and that “the Sudanese government is committing genocidal atrocities against the civilian population in the south and the Nuba Mountains.”

This is not the first time a prominent Islamist activist has been appointed to USCIRF’s board. Kuwaiti-born Abou El Fadl, a professor from UCLA School of Law, served on the commission in the early 2000s after downplaying the aggressive expansionist agenda of Wahhabi extremists. In 2002, he declared that Wahhabis “do not seek to dominate — to attain supremacy in the world,” and that they “are more than happy living within the boundaries of Saudi Arabia.”

In the years since his time on USCIRF, El Fadl has been a vocal critic of specialists who raised the alarm over the Muslim Brotherhood, charging them with “Islamophobia.” This is not the behavior of someone intent on protecting religious freedom, but someone intent on weaponizing the principle to deflect scrutiny away from Islamist organizations.

Reporting Issues Identified in the Middle of the Night in GOP Governor’s Race in Arizona

Another election another reporting issue – this time in the results of Arizona’s GOP Governor’s race.

After finding herself behind, despite being way ahead in polling leading up to the election, GOP Governor candidate Kari Lake finally burst into the lead late after midnight.

But something funny happened in the middle of the night in this race. At 2:40 am central time, NBC News was reporting that Candidate Karrin Robson was in the lead with 46.4% of the vote and 258,924 votes to Kari Lake’s 43.5% of the vote and 242,301 votes. This would have been 12:40 am in Phoenix.

You can see below the total votes per county in Arizona in the GOP Governor’s race at this time. Note it is 2:41 am central time.

The next minute, at 2:42 am central time, the vote changes and Kari Lake jumps into the lead with 45.2% of the vote and 274,337 votes to Robson’s 45.1% and 273,304 votes. Note also that NBC News is reporting that 99% of the expected vote is in. ‘Percent of total votes in’ didn’t change but the overall votes changed.

Another oddity is that the county votes did not change at this time. The county totals agree with the totals from moments earlier. For the total votes to change, the county votes would have to change as well but they didn’t. Only the total votes changed – the county totals stayed the same.

Islamists have learned how to use USCIRF to harass their enemies. The Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC) has effectively lobbied the commission to condemn the mistreatment of Muslims in India. While inter-communal violence in India is a legitimate concern, the IAMC is simply not a credible source of commentary on religious freedom and peaceful interfaith relations.

In 2002, IAMC spokesperson Kaleem Kawaja lamented the fall of the Taliban in Afghanistan asking his fellow Muslims if they could “spare a tear” for the organization. And on Sept. 11, 2021, IAMC had Islamist scholar Yasir Nadeem Al Wajidi spoke at its national retreat in Chicago, weeks after he celebrated the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan, calling the event “an opportunity to present to the world an Islamic system based on justice and fairness.” The Taliban has subsequently evicted minority Shia Muslims from their homes in Afghanistan and denied girls their right to attend school.

And on August 15, 2020, IAMC celebrated 74 years of Indian independence with a webinar featuring Indian activist Harsh Mander, who was later reprimanded in India’s high court for instigating Muslim mobs to seek “justice on the streets.”

This is not to say that no Muslim can be trusted to promote the cause of religious freedom. The work of Rashad Hussain, the Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom for the Biden Administration, is a case in point. He has condemned blasphemy and apostasy laws used to justify Islamist violence. Hussain also condemned the murder of a Hindu tailor by Muslim extremists in India during his recent appearance on the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission.

USCIRF is supposed to monitor abuses of religious freedom. Sadly, the commission itself needs monitoring.

The UN nuclear chief has warned Europe’s largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine “is completely out of control” and issued an urgent plea to Russia and Ukraine to quickly allow experts to visit the complex to stabilise the situation and avoid a nuclear accident.

Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said the situation was getting more perilous every day at the Zaporizhzhia plant in the south-eastern city of Enerhodar, which Russian troops seized in early March, soon after their February 24 invasion of Ukraine.

“Every principle of nuclear safety has been violated” at the plant, he said, adding: “What is at stake is extremely serious and extremely grave and dangerous.”

Mr Grossi cited many violations of the plant’s safety, adding that it is “in a place where active war is ongoing”, near Russian-controlled territory.

The physical integrity of the plant has not been respected, he said, citing shelling at the beginning of the war when it was taken over and continuing information from Ukraine and Russia accusing each other of attacks at Zaporizhzhia.

There is “a paradoxical situation” in which the plant is controlled by Russia, but its Ukrainian staff continues to run its nuclear operations, leading to inevitable moments of friction and alleged violence, Mr Grossi said.

While the IAEA has some contacts with staff, they are “faulty” and “patchy”, he said.

Mr Grossi said the supply chain of equipment and spare parts had been interrupted, “so we are not sure the plant is getting all it needs”.

The IAEA also needs to perform very important inspections to ensure that nuclear material is being safeguarded, “and there is a lot of nuclear material there to be inspected”, he said.

“When you put this together, you have a catalogue of things that should never be happening in any nuclear facility,” Mr Grossi said.

“And this is why I have been insisting from day one that we have to be able to go there to perform this safety and security evaluation, to do the repairs and to assist as we already did in Chernobyl.”

The Russian capture of Zaporizhzhia renewed fears the largest of Ukraine’s 15 nuclear reactors could be damaged, setting off another emergency like the 1986 Chernobyl accident, the world’s worst nuclear disaster, which happened about 65 miles north of the capital Kyiv.

Russian forces occupied the heavily contaminated site soon after the invasion, but handed control back to the Ukrainians at the end of March.

Mr Grossi visited Chernobyl on April 27 and tweeted the level of safety was “like a ‘red light’ blinking”.

But he said the IAEA set up “an assistance mission” at Chernobyl at that time “that has been very, very successful so far”.

The IAEA needs to go to Zaporizhzhia, as it did to Chernobyl, to ascertain the facts of what is actually happening there, to carry out repairs and inspections, and “to prevent a nuclear accident from happening”, Mr Grossi said.

The IAEA chief said he and his team need protection to get to the plant and the urgent co-operation of Russia and Ukraine.

Each side wants the international mission to go from different sites, which is understandable in light of territorial integrity and political considerations, he said. But he added there is something more urgent and that is getting the IAEA team to Zaporizhzhia.

“The IAEA, by its presence, will be a deterrent to any act of violence against this nuclear power plant,” Mr Grossi said.

“So I’m pleading as an international civil servant, as the head of an international organisation, I’m pleading to both sides to let this mission proceed.”

A ‘rare’ white elephant has been born in Myanmar, according to state officials.

The male calf was born at 6.30 a.m. on 23rd July in Rakhine, a state on the country’s west coast.

He already stands at roughly two and a half foot tall and just over three foot wide.

His mother is a 33-year-old female elephant called Zar Nan Hla, who is kept by the Myanma Timber Enterprise in Taungup Township. Both are reportedly happy and healthy.

The country’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation announced the ‘auspicious’ birth on Tuesday.

White elephants are rare, but they’re not a distinct species.

Officials say they can be distinguished by up to eight unique traits: pearl-coloured eyes, a back shaped like a plantain branch, white hair, a distinctive tail, special skin markings, reddish brown or pinkish skin, big ears and five claws on their front legs and four on their back legs.

The newly-born elephant reportedly has all but one of these.

White elephants are revered as symbols of good luck and power in much of Southeast Asia.

In fact, the animals were once so highly prized that countries have gone to war over them. During the sixteenth century, war broke out between Siama and Burma — now Thailand and Myanmar — over a demand for two white elephants.

The country has previously captured nine of the rare animals, according to USA Today.

But, as AFP reports, the social media response to the latest birth has been muted in the wake of last year’s military coup.

An apparent internal FBI document that leaked Tuesday lists the Betsy Ross American flag, the Gadsden “Don’t Tread on Me” flag, symbols of the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, and other imagery as symbols of “Militia Violent Extremists” or MVEs.

The purported FBI documents were published by the undercover journalism organization Project Veritas, which said it obtained the document from a whistleblower in the FBI.

The document is labeled “Unclassified/Law Enforcement Sensitive” and contains the “FBI Internal Use Only” disclaimer. The document states “the following symbols are used by Anti-Government or Anti-Authority Violent Extremists, specifically Militia Violent Extremists.”

The document then lists the symbols:

Boogaloo: an American flag with an igloo replacing the 50 stars and a single Hawaiian-shirt patterned line. The term Boogaloo is a reference to the film Breakin 2: Electric Boogaloo and appears to describe the possibility of a second American civil war.

After Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, the US expanded intelligence sharing with Ukraine’s forces, and US officials have bragged to the media that this cooperation helped kill Russian generals and sink a Russian warship. Canadian Vax Mandate Wasn't Based on Science, Court Says

According to court documents obtained by Common Sense, the Canadian mandate which prevented people from traveling in or out of the country unless they were vaccinated was not based on any particular scientific study.

Taken with the recent revelations from Dr. Deborah Birx that health officials knew the vaccine would not prevent infection, the picture being painted of public health agencies is not pretty.

The documents, under seal by court order, have been released thanks to the efforts of two Canadians who refused the vaccine and were unable to travel to Britain to visit loved ones. The documents reveal a decision-making process regarding the travel mandate that only wacko, left-wing, woke radicals could invent.

No one in the COVID Recovery unit, including Jennifer Little, the director-general, had any formal education in epidemiology, medicine or public health.

Little, who has an undergraduate degree in literature from the University of Toronto, testified that there were 20 people in the unit. When Presvelos asked her whether anyone in the unit had any professional experience in public health, she said there was one person, Monique St.-Laurent. According to St.-Laurent’s LinkedIn profile, she appears to be a civil servant who briefly worked for the Public Health Agency of Canada. St.-Laurent is not a doctor, Little said.

An email exchange between the Public Health Agency of Canada and Transport Canada shows the scramble to come up with any kind of a justification to impose the travel mandate.

“To the extent that updated data exist or that there is clearer evidence of the safety benefit of vaccination on the users or other stakeholders of the transportation system, it would be helpful to assist Transport Canada supporting its measures,” McCrorie wrote.

Four days later, on October 22, McCrorie emailed Lumley-Myllari again: “Our requirements come in on October 30”—in just over a week—”so need something fairly soon.”

On October 28, Lumley-Myllari replied to McCrorie with a series of bullet points outlining the benefits, generally speaking, of the Covid vaccine. She did not address McCrorie’s question about the transportation system, noting that the Public Health Agency of Canada was updating its “Public health considerations” with regard to vaccine mandates.

Two days later, on October 30, the travel mandate took effect.

It should be noted that the lack of scientific basis for imposing the mandate does not mean there isn’t evidence that vaccines offer some protection against serious disease. They do, as the evidence is overwhelming that, for those in vulnerable populations, the vaccines are effective at keeping people out of hospitals and saving lives.

But Transport Canada was justifying its mandate based on the idea that vaccines would reduce the number of infections — something that obviously hasn’t happened.

The next COVID wave is upon us, and masks have become all the rage again. And people will continue to get sick, vaccine or no vaccine, mask or not. It’s a silly dance in which the government is just noticing that they’re the only ones moving.

Corporations' profits soaring as inflation skyrockets and real wages fall, report reveals

There are fresh calls for big business to rein in their big or "supernormal" profits in order to provide low wage earners some desperately needed household budget relief.

Key points:

Big oil and gas companies almost doubled their profits in six months

An interim report shows the productivity growth that drives real wages is at a 60-year low

Some experts say the lack of wage growth is symptomatic of a broken industrial relations system

The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) wants businesses to share a great portion of their profits with their workforce.

The latest national accounts show Australian companies are taking a record share of company earnings in the form of profits.

The latest profit results from Shell, Chevron, Exxon Mobil and BP show record half-yearly earnings.

Half-yearly profits for all companies together had almost doubled to $US55.2 billion ($79.6 billion), up from $US28.7 billion for the same period last year, the ACTU noted.

"These energy giants are posting staggering profits while fuelling our cost-of-living crisis," ACTU president Michele O'Neil says.

"Their shareholders are pocketing billions while working people are wondering how on Earth they can afford to fill up their car or heat their homes.

"The big oil and gas companies booked super windfall profits while Australian taxpayers have subsidised the bowser price of petrol.

"It's time that big businesses do their part to address the cost-of-living crisis gripping Australians right now.

"If the bargaining system was working the way it is supposed to, workers' standard of living wouldn't be hit as hard by big increases in power, gas and petrol prices."

Productivity first, according to businesses

Business groups argue that for real wages to lift, worker productivity needs to lift.

The Productivity Commission's interim report confirms that the productivity growth that drives real wages is languishing at 60-year lows, Business Council chief executive Jennifer Westacott says.

"This challenge is monumental because it is productivity that has overwhelmingly driven better living standards and higher wages for Australians since Federation.

But labour market economists say there should be less focus on the trend in the rate of productivity growth and more attention given to the difference between wage growth and productivity.

Figures from the Centre for Future Work, part of progressive the think tank The Australia Institute, show productivity growth has beaten wages growth for over a decade.

That should, in theory, mean a higher rate of pay growth for workers.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban lashed out at the European Union on Monday evening in a Facebook post, reminding his followers that Brussels doesn’t dictate European affairs.

“The European Union is not in Brussels. The European Union is in Vienna, Budapest and Warsaw, Berlin and Madrid,” the prime minister said.

“Brussels is not our boss We are an independent, sovereign Hungarian nation. We make decisions together. If they’re not good for us, we’ll tell them. If they are not good and we can prevent them, the common decision will not be made.”

Orban has made international headlines in recent weeks for his blunt statements criticizing the West’s policies.

On July 28, the premier blasted NATO’s support for Kiev during a meeting in Vienna with Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer.

“The Hungarian assessment is that the concept of NATO supporting Ukraine with weapons and training officers, and the Ukrainians fighting against the Russians, is a construct that has now been shown not to result in a Ukrainian victory,” Orban said at a press conference.

The prime minister has been a holdout amongst European leaders in jumping on board Brussels’ harsh sanctions campaign against Russia, particularly a total embargo of Russian natural gas.

In his remarks criticizing NATO, Orban also made reference to the fact that sanctions on Moscow are causing serious economic hardship in the bloc. He said that a peaceful settlement needs to be reached in Ukraine because its absence will spur economic recession in the EU that will be accompanied by political instability.

The prime minister also defended a comment he’d made on July 23 and that generated international headlines, whenhe warned Hungarians not to mix with “non-Europeans.”

This caused his longtime adviser Zsuzsa Hegedus to resign, over his words, which she described as “a pure Nazi text.”
