MANAMA, Bahrain - Three vessels from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN) interacted in an unsafe and unprofessional manner as U.S. Navy ships transited the Strait of Hormuz,June 20.

 

Patrol coastal ship USS Sirocco (PC 6) and expeditionary fast transport ship USNS Choctaw County (T-EPF 2) were conducting a routine transit in international waters when three Iranian fast inshore attack craft approached.

 

One of the IRGCN vessels approached Sirocco head-on at a dangerously high speed and only altered course after the U.S. patrol coastal ship issued audible warning signals to avoid collision. The Iranian vessel also came within 50 yards of the U.S. Navy ship during the interaction, and Sirocco responded by deploying a warning flare.

 

The full interaction among all vessels lasted one hour and ended when the IRGCN craft departed the area. U.S. Navy ships continued their transit without further incident.

 

The IRGCN’s actions did not meet international standards of professional or safe maritime behavior, increasing the risk of miscalculation and collision.

 

U.S. naval forces remain vigilant and will continue to fly, sail and operate anywhere international law allows while promoting regional maritime security.

2 dead, 3 injured in shooting at Houston flea market

 

Authorities in Texas said at least two people were killed and three others were injured Sunday during a shooting that erupted at a busy Houston flea market.

 

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced the shooting at 8720 Airline Drive on Twitter, stating multiple shots were fired and at least two pistols were recovered.

 

"For now, it appears the wounded were all likely participants in the altercation," he said, adding no bystanders were injured.

 

Susan Cotter, major of patrol for the county, told reporters during a press conference that the shooting began shortly after 1 p.m. within the flea market as a result of an altercation that turned into a gun battle between two groups of Hispanic men in their 20s.

Ex-Trump Adviser Peter Navarro Pleads Not Guilty to Contempt of Congress Charges

 

Peter Navarro, a White House adviser during the Trump administration, pleaded not guilty on June 17 to contempt of Congress charges.

 

Navarro was hit with the misdemeanor charges earlier in June, after declining to cooperate with the House of Representatives panel investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol, citing executive privilege due to his former position at the White House.

 

Navarro had been representing himself before the issue turned into a criminal one.

 

“Obviously being put in leg irons and having people want to put me in prison have changed matters,” Navarro told reporters outside the federal courthouse in Washington.

 

Navarro has also said he was denied a call to a lawyer after being arrested, which prosecutors have denied.

 

During Friday’s hearing, Navarro’s attorneys asked for the trial to take place in 2023 so that constitutional questions surrounding the privilege invocation could be resolved, WUSA-TV reported.

 

They also said Navarro plans to go on a tour beginning in September promoting his new book, “Taking Back Trump’s America: Why We Lost the White House and How We’ll Win it Back.”

 

Prosecutors said the government was ready to start the trial sooner.

 

U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta set the start of the trial for Nov. 17, but indicated that might not be the final trial date.

 

Navarro is the second former Trump adviser charged for refusing to cooperate with the House Jan. 6 panel.

 

Steve Bannon, who has also cited privilege, was the first.

 

Bannon’s motion to dismiss the charges was rejected by U.S. District Court Judge Carl Nichols, a Trump appointee, this week.

 

Bannon’s attempts to subpoena House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.)—who appointed every member of the panel—and members of the panel, have not yet been ruled upon.

 

Two other former Trump aides who have resisted working with the panel have not been charged.

NBC News anchor Chuck Todd said on Friday that the Supreme Court overturning the landmark abortion decisions Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey proved that the 2016 election was the “most consequential election in more than 100 years.”

 

Todd lamented about “the trust in the court and the erosion of that and making it be viewed as an extraordinarily partisan institution.”

 

“We already have that in the House and the Senate and I think now particularly what happened this week, particularly how Donald Trump appointed the Supreme Court, how he went about it, particularly in the whole Scalia thing with McConnell and all that,” he continued, referring to then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) not filling the Supreme Court vacancy in 2016 when Justice Antonin Scalia died. Trump, having won that year’s election, picked Neil Gorsuch to succeed Scalia. Gorsuch was in the majority in Friday’s ruling.

 

Todd echoed the sentiments of those who are against Friday’s decision.

 

“There really is a lot of people who believe this is a rigged court. This court’s makeup isn’t ‘fair and square.’ It really isn’t representative of where the country is and even was. And I think that is only going to add to cynicism. It’s only going to add to that.”

 

Todd remarked that the ruling is in part due to Trump’s election as president.

 

“I don’t think we can fully ever appreciate the 2016 presidential election is going to turn out to be perhaps the most consequential election in more than a 100 years. The fallout from that election, right, particularly you look at courts,” he said. “We can go through a whole thing… But just think about what has changed in America, in culture and society, due to the results of the 2016 election.”

Russia's military has declared that its desired strategic "land bridge" connecting Russian national territory with the Donbas and Crimea is complete, according to statements given to CNN senior national security correspondent Alex Marquardt. The Tuesday Russian military statement said that "roads and rail lines between western Russia and Crimea are operational," which marks that "the land bridge is complete."

 

"Conditions have been created for the resumption of full-fledged traffic between Russia, Donbas, Ukraine and Crimea on six railway sections," Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said. "Automobile communication has been opened from the territory of Russia along the mainland to Crimea." Thus it appears the Kremlin is touting its own 'mission accomplished' moment, at least pertaining to the eastern and southern theaters of the war.

If indeed the land bridge is complete, according to Defense Minister Shoigu's latest claims, it's now likely inevitable that Russia will soon assert full control over the Donbas. Already within the past days there's been growing consensus that essentially all of the Luhansk province is under Russian control.

Understanding the NY Times Article on the CIA in Ukraine

When you read some so-called bombshell report dishing the dirt on some Top Secret U.S. operation in the New York Times or the Washington Post, you need to understand that this was not the result of some intrepid, eager beaver reporter who took the initiative and came up with a nifty idea for a story. Such stories are based on official or sanctioned leaks and always have an ulterior motive. This is not so much about informing an ignorant public about reality, rather it is either propaganda or signalling a shift in U.S. policy.

The New York Times published such a piece today under the title, Commando Network Coordinates Flow of Weapons in Ukraine, Officials Say. Ooohhh! Commando Networks. Sounds sexy and sinister

Let me give you an example. Let’s say that the CIA bubba in Kiev gets word that Russians are massing 5 Battlion Tactical Groups northeast of Mariupol. Mr. CIA gives that intel, with precise geographic coordinates to his Ukrainian counterpart. One would expect the Ukrainians to launch some sort of attack with fixed wing aircraft or missiles or artillery or armored units on that Russian force. In the real case of Mariupol, Ukraine failed to stop the Russian offensive and the city was captured, along with 2500 members of Ukraine’s AZOV Battalion.

The Ukrainian military’s most acute training problem right now is that it is losing its most battle-hardened and well-trained forces, according to former American officials who have worked with the Ukrainians.

The former Trump administration official said Special Operations Command had small groups of American operators working in the field with Ukrainian officials before the war. The American teams were sometimes called Jedburgh, a reference to a World War II effort to train partisans behind enemy lines, the official said.

The modern special operations teams mainly focused on training in small-unit tactics but also worked on communications, battlefield medicine, reconnaissance and other skills requested by Ukrainian forces. Those efforts, the official said, ended before the Russian invasion but would have been helpful if they had continued during the war.

Having American trainers on the ground now might not be worth the risks, other former officials said, especially if it prompted an escalation by President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia.

“Would the enhancement of the training be worth the possible price that is going to have to be paid?” Mr. Wise said. “An answer is probably not.”

 

Got that? The most acute problem is that the best Ukrainian troops are dead, wounded or captured. There are no first rate troops left to train. Oh my. That is a problem and the United States is not going to put any of our troops into harms way. That is, for now, the Biden Administration’s policy. Putting “modern special operations teams” on the ground to train Ukrainians is, per the NY Times piece, too great a risk and carries a price that is not worth the outcome.

A week earlier, foreign ministers from the BRICS group of developing economies discussed measures to strengthen the regional and international collaboration among the five nations.

 

The organization's members are known for their significant influence on regional affairs. Since 2009, the governments of the BRICS states have met annually at formal summits.

The J6 Inquisition Is An Obvious Soviet-Style Show Trial

As during Communist control of Soviet Russia, the Jan. 6 Committee’s purpose is to prop up a dying, corrupt regime.

The House Select Committee on Jan. 6 launched the public phase of its proceedings Thursday night in a prime-time hearing with all the fanfare of a Soviet show trial, complete with production assistance from a former president of ABC News.

Just as the communists gathered in Moscow between 1936 and 1938 to purge their political opponents in public show trials, nine members of the lower chamber filed into the Cannon House Office Building to demonize their political opponents as domestic enemies.

“I’m from a part of the country where people justify the actions of slavery, Ku Klux Klan, and lynching,” Chairman Bennie Thompson of Mississippi said in his opening. “I’m reminded of that dark history as I hear voices today try and justify the actions of the insurrectionists on January 6th, 2021.”

Thompson went on the brand today’s political opposition as modern-day Confederates and “domestic enemies of the Constitution,” cloaking his own authoritarian admonishment under the moral righteousness of preserving American democracy.

“The world is watching what we do here,” Thompson said. “America has long been expected to be shining city on the hill, a beacon of hope and freedom, a model for others when we are at our best.”

The hearing, however, possessed all the signature hallmarks of the infamous Moscow Trials nearly 100 years ago, in which opponents to Joseph Stalin’s regime were hauled before the public and charged with treason and sedition. And those who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 are far from the only targets of the witch hunt spearheaded by Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney and Rep. Thompson.

Legitimate political opposition on Thursday was absent from the hearings. No counternarrative was allowed by the regime, which barred the opposing party’s selected representatives as every cable network except Fox News carried the programming live. Members conducting the show trial accused their opponents of conspiracy to topple the U.S. government, just as the Soviets accused Old Bolshevik leaders of plans to terminate Stalin. Never mind that American institutions held on Jan. 6, and the federal government came nowhere close to collapse when congressional proceedings were interrupted.

The trials in Moscow culminated in the “Great Purge” of dissidents to the incumbent regime, with defendants given death sentences. The Jan. 6 proceedings are aimed at the ultimate purge of former President Donald Trump and his supporters, albeit through societal exile and jail sentences as opposed to execution. According to whistleblowers in the FBI, a purge within the federal law enforcement agency has already begun.

On Tuesday, Ohio Republican Rep. Jim Jordan sent a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray detailing allegations of multiple whistleblowers who reported they were terminated for their dissident (conservative) views from the agency.

“[He is a] decorated Iraqi War veteran being run out of the FBI,” Jordan said on Fox News Tuesday night of one whistleblower. “His allegiance to the country is being questioned because he had the gall to say something that offended the FBI leadership about the Jan. 6 investigation.”

 

The other [individual] is also having the same thing happen to them simply because, on an anonymous questionnaire, they said something that the leadership disagreed with them about Jan. 6.

 

Six in total have come forward, Jordan told Fox News’s Laura Ingraham.

 

Meanwhile, the Jan. 6 Committee’s prime targets have included prominent members of the prior administration, just as Stalin’s deputies prosecuted leaders of the old regime. On Friday, former Trump Trade Advisor Peter Navarro was taken by the FBI in handcuffs and charged with crimes stemming from the committee’s work. On Thursday morning, hours before the Jan. 6 Committee’s prime-time show trial, lead Michigan GOP gubernatorial candidate Ryan Kelley was arrested by the same agency.

 

Of the more than 100 subpoenas issued by the Select Committee ostensibly established to probe the Capitol riot, less than 10 percent, according to a Federalist analysis, have targeted individuals directly involved in the chaos. The rest have gone after Americans who committed the now-apparent crime of holding a peaceful demonstration at the White House and espoused unacceptable views in the eyes of the incumbent regime.

North Korea’s Missile Success Is Linked to Ukrainian Plant

North Korea’s success in testing an intercontinental ballistic missile that appears able to reach the United States was made possible by black-market purchases of powerful rocket engines probably from a Ukrainian factory with historical ties to Russia’s missile program, according to an expert analysis being published Monday and classified assessments by American intelligence agencies.

The studies may solve the mystery of how North Korea began succeeding so suddenly after a string of fiery missile failures, some of which may have been caused by American sabotage of its supply chains and cyberattacks on its launches. After those failures, the North changed designs and suppliers in the past two years, according to a new study by Michael Elleman, a missile expert at the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

Such a degree of aid to North Korea from afar would be notable because President Trump has singled out only China as the North’s main source of economic and technological support. He has never blamed Ukraine or Russia, though his secretary of state, Rex W. Tillerson, made an oblique reference to both China and Russia as the nation’s “principal economic enablers” after the North’s most recent ICBM launch last month.

Analysts who studied photographs of the North’s leader, Kim Jong-un, inspecting the new rocket motors concluded that they derive from designs that once powered the Soviet Union’s missile fleet. The engines were so powerful that a single missile could hurl 10 thermonuclear warheads between continents.

Those engines were linked to only a few former Soviet sites. Government investigators and experts have focused their inquiries on a missile factory in Dnipro, Ukraine, on the edge of the territory where Russia is fighting a low-level war to break off part of Ukraine. During the Cold War, the factory made the deadliest missiles in the Soviet arsenal, including the giant SS-18. It remained one of Russia’s primary producers of missiles even after Ukraine gained independence.

But since Ukraine’s pro-Russian president, Viktor Yanukovych, was removed from power in 2014, the state-owned factory, known as Yuzhmash, has fallen on hard times. The Russians canceled upgrades of their nuclear fleet. The factory is underused, awash in unpaid bills and low morale. Experts believe it is the most likely source of the engines that in July powered the two ICBM tests, which were the first to suggest that North Korea has the range, if not necessarily the accuracy or warhead technology, to threaten American cities.

“It’s likely that these engines came from Ukraine — probably illicitly,” Mr. Elleman said in an interview. “The big question is how many they have and whether the Ukrainians are helping them now. I’m very worried.”

Bolstering his conclusion, he added, was a finding by United Nations investigators that North Korea tried six years ago to steal missile secrets from the Ukrainian complex. Two North Koreans were caught, and a U.N. report said the information they tried to steal was focused on advanced “missile systems, liquid-propellant engines, spacecraft and missile fuel supply systems.”

Investigators now believe that, amid the chaos of post-revolutionary Ukraine, Pyongyang tried again.

Several Intel community members including Bill Binney, however, long maintained that the only way to get the files out of the server with the timestamps that they had was if files were copied onto a thumbdrive at high speed, not exfiltrated over a slower Internet connection (to anywhere, much less Russia.)

Ghislaine Maxwell will learn her fate Tuesday when a US judge sentences the former socialite for helping late disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein sexually abuse girls.

 

Maxwell, 60, faces receiving an effective life term in prison when judge Alison Nathan hands down her sentence in Manhattan’s federal court.

 

The Oxford-educated daughter of the late British press baron Robert Maxwell was convicted late last year on five of six counts, the most serious for sex trafficking minors.

 

Her lawyers have argued for leniency, citing a traumatic childhood and claiming that Maxwell is being unfairly punished because Epstein escaped trial.

 

They called for Nathan to hand down a sentence less than the US probation office’s recommended 20 years.

 

Prosecutors have asked that Maxwell receive between 30 and 55 years in jail, arguing that she has shown an “utter lack of remorse” for her crimes, committed between 1994 and 2004.

 

Maxwell’s attorney Bobbi Sternheim wrote in a letter Saturday to Nathan that her client had been placed on suicide watch — despite not being suicidal — and that her lawyers would look to postpone her sentencing if she remained in solitary confinement.

 

During her high-profile trial late 2021, the prosecutors successfully proved that Maxwell was “the key” to Epstein’s scheme of enticing young girls to give him massages, during which he would sexually abuse them.

 

Two of Epstein’s victims, identified as “Jane” and “Carolyn,” testified that they were as young as 14 when Maxwell began grooming them.

 

Maxwell’s lawyers say their client had “a difficult, traumatic childhood with an overbearing, narcissistic, and demanding father.”

 

“It made her vulnerable to Epstein, whom she met right after her father’s death,” they wrote in submissions filed earlier this month.

 

Money manager Epstein killed himself in prison 2019 aged 66 while awaiting his own sex crimes trial in New York.

 

“Ms. Maxwell cannot and should not bear all the punishment for which Epstein should have been held responsible,” her attorneys pleaded.

 

‘DEVASTATING HARM’

The prosecution contended in its own court filing last week that Maxwell “was an adult who made her own choices.”

 

“She made the choice to conspire with Epstein for years, working as partners in crime and causing devastating harm to vulnerable victims,” wrote Damian Williams, the US attorney for the Southern District of New York.

 

Maxwell has already been held in detention for some two years following her arrest in New Hampshire in the summer of 2020.

 

Her sentencing will cap a dramatic fall for the former international jetsetter who grew up in wealth and privilege as a friend to royalty.

Last Tuesday, Judge Christine Weems in Harris County issued a temporary restraining order to block the enforcement of the 1925 Texas law banning abortion unless required to save the mother’s life.

 

Abortions in Texas were already restricted under the Texas Heartbeat Act or Senate Bill 8, a law that took effect in September 2021.

 

Weems’ order had reassured some clinics that they could temporarily resume abortions up to six weeks, roughly when a heartbeat is detectable in the unborn baby.

 

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced on June 30 that he sought emergency relief from the Texas Supreme Court by asking it to vacate the temporary restraining order issued by Weems.

 

Paxton’s petition was granted, and the state has returned to enforcing the Texas Heartbeat Act. A later hearing on the case is scheduled for July 12.

 

Roe v. Wade enabled abortions up to 24 weeks of pregnancy across the country, but that changed last week. The decision by the U.S. Supreme Court on June 24 sent abortion regulations back to states.

Senior advisor to Obama pleads guilty!

 

A former Obama administration official pleaded guilty to federal charges on Friday for his involvement in a secretive effort to unduly influence the Trump administration.

 

Richard G. Olson, who was then-President Barack Obama’s special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan in 2015 and 2016, admitted that he lied on ethics paperwork and broke so-called ‘revolving door’ statutes, according to a report in The Washington Post.

 

The report noted that the misdemeanor violations came in connection with Olson lobbying for Qatar within a year of his retirement from the federal government.

 

The Post added:

 

In pre-plea proceedings in federal court in Washington, Olson’s defense counsel said he admitted to the misdemeanor charges — each punishable by up to one year in prison at his sentencing Sept. 13 — and cooperated with federal prosecutors on the understanding that they were also investigating and pursuing criminal charges against retired four-star Marine Gen. John G. Allen. The latter commanded U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan before retiring in 2013. He was tapped in late 2017 as president of Washington’s influential Brookings Institution, to which Qatar agreed in 2013 to donate $14.8 million over four years.

 

The two men are the latest high-level American officials to be enmeshed in a long-running federal investigation into a ferocious — and lucrative — battle for influence in Washington waged between the wealthy Persian Gulf nation of Qatar and its regional rival the United Arab Emirates, as Donald Trump prepared to take office and engage in new rounds of Middle East diplomacy.

 

The Post went on to report that in July 2021, Thomas Barrack, Jr., a longtime billionaire friend of Trump and his presidential inaugural committee chairman, was charged with obstructing justice and acting on behalf of the UAE without being registered as a foreign lobbyist.

 

Also, U.S. businessman Imaad Zuberi, who is a major donor to both political parties, was sentenced in February 2020 to 12 years behind bars after he pledged guilty to tax evasion, foreign influence-peddling, and violations of campaign finance laws.

 

In court papers, Olson admitted he failed to disclose in annual ethics forms as required that he accepted a first-class airline ticket from New Mexico to London, as well as a stay in a luxury hotel in January 2015 — all of which were worth approximately $20,000 — from a Pakistani-American businessman (anon wonders if there is an AWAN connection?)who was not identified by the federal government but whose description matches Zuberi, the Post reported.

 

“Olson admitted meeting with a Bahrain businessman, who would offer him a one-year $300,000 contract for work after he left the State Department,” the paper added.

 

Olson admitted in plea documents filed in court in June 2017 that he contacted an unnamed third person who is defense identified as Allen in order to help “provide aid and advice to Qatari government officials with the intent to influence” American foreign policy following a blockade of Qatar by the UAE and ally Saudi Arabia.

 

Zuberi, Olson and “Person 3” traveled to Doha, “where the latter pair met with various Qatari officials including its emir, then returned to meet in Washington with members of Congress,” the Post added.

 

During a hearing on May 27 and in previous court filings, J. Michael Hannon, Olson’s attorney, pressed federal prosecutors about why Allen has yet to be charged.

 

“Exculpatory evidence about Allen could mitigate Olson’s sentence or invalidate his plea agreement, Hannon argued, saying a decision not to charge the general could mean prosecutors improperly ‘induced’ a guilty plea from the diplomat who relied on government representations that he might be recommended leniency at sentencing for his cooperation,” noted the paper.

 

Hannon told U.S. Magistrate Judge G. Michael Harvey, who presided over the case and accepted Olson’s plea: “If in fact there is no case against General John R. Allen [for allegedly violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act], we think that that is a significant piece of information for sentencing, just as we believe that an inducement to enter into this plea agreement is important to the court.”

 

Evan Turgeon, a prosecutor with the Justice Department’s national security division, told the court that Allen’s case remains open and that the government never offered Olson leniency in exchange for his cooperation.

 

He added, “Nothing related to General Allen has any bearing on the false statement the defendant made on an Office of Government Ethics form in May of 2016, and that was a full year before General Allen’s involvement in activities related to Qatar.”

The Growing Availability of Signals Intelligence in the Public Domain

Cortney Weinbaum, Steven Berner, and Bruce McClintock

SIGINT, or signals intelligence, is intelligence gathered

from communications, electronics, or foreign instrumen-

tation1 and has traditionally been considered an inher-

ently governmental function. Historically, only govern-

ment had the financial means and the legal authority to conduct

SIGINT activities, and, in our experience, many members of

the U.S. government still hold this opinion today. We tested this

viewpoint by conducting a market scan to seek examples of how

new technologies, innovations, and behaviors are challenging the

existing government-only paradigm. We examined the breadth of

technologies available now and reported to be released in the near

future to understand the capabilities each provides, which audience

or market each serves, and what implications each may have for

government policy and practices.

This was an exploratory effort, rather than a comprehensive

research endeavor. We relied on unclassified and publicly avail-

able materials to find examples of capabilities that challenge the

government-only paradigm. We identified ways these capabilities

and trends may impact the U.S. government in terms of emerging

threats, policy implications, technology repercussions, human capi-

tal considerations, and financial effects. Finally, we identified areas

for future study for U.S. and allied government leaders to respond

to these changes.

During our market scan, we found examples of SIGINT

capabilities outside of government that are available to anyone. The

capabilities we found have applications in maritime domain aware-

ness; radio frequency (RF) spectrum mapping; eavesdropping, jam-

ming, and hijacking of satellite communications; and cyber surveil-

lance. Most of these capabilities are commercially available, many

are free, and some are illegal. In our view, the existence of both

legal and illegal markets and capabilities results in an environment

where SIGINT has been democratized, or available to anyone.

 

About the Authors

Cortney Weinbaumis a management scientist at the RAND Corpora-

tion. She has spent 14 years in the Intelligence Community and Department

of Defense improving policies, practices, and technologies. Previously, she

served as an intelligence officer and program manager developing radio

frequency and electromagnetic measurement and signature intelligence

(MASINT) collection systems.

Steven Berneris a senior engineer at the RAND Corporation. For nine

years he led RAND’s work for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency,

including developing a strategy and roadmap for NGA’s research and

development programs. Mr. Berner has over 40 years of experience in

satellite and aerospace programs addressing the overlap of technology,

policy, and national security.

Bruce McClintockis an adjunct policy analyst at the RAND Corporation

The FBI Tried to Ambush My Source. Now I’m Telling the Whole Story.

 

I’ve been reluctant to write what I know about the FBI’s scheme because the tale is so complicated that I’m still not sure I fully understand it.

 

FBI agent Grayden Ridd had a confidential message for his informant. An FBI team had been given the green light by the Justice Department to ambush and derail a planned meeting between a reporter and a source, and the informant’s job was to let the FBI know when and where the meeting would take place.

 

The reporter whose meeting they planned to target was me.

 

It was January 2014, and I was an investigative reporter in the Washington bureau of the New York Times focusing on national security. The FBI wanted to stop me from obtaining documents that I’d been told would reveal the details of massive spying operations by the National Security Agency. The FBI was convinced that I was in contact with someone they had secretly nicknamed the “second Snowden,” who was about to give me an archive that they feared could go far beyond what former NSA contractor Edward Snowden had leaked about the agency’s spying operations the year before.

 

The FBI’s plan to grab my source at our scheduled meeting was approved by top officials at the FBI and the Justice Department during the Obama administration, according to audio recordings I obtained of several phone conversations between Ridd and his informant. At the time, Eric Holder was U.S. attorney general and James Comey was FBI director.

 

“Right now, they are on board,” Ridd said in one phone conversation to plan the ambush operation, referring to top Justice Department and FBI officials. “I have to periodically go up to the throne room and recommit them. … We actually have a lot of buy-in and a lot of support, but I do need to feed the beast.”

 

The FBI declined to comment and the Justice Department did not respond to requests for comment. Holder did not answer a request for comment left with his office; Comey did not respond to a request for comment conveyed through his lawyer. Ridd did not respond to a request for comment placed with a relative or to a knock at the door of his home in Washington, D.C.

In connection with Whitney Webb’s upcoming book on the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, One Nation Under Blackmail, Unlimited Hangout filed a Freedom of Information request asking UK law enforcement and the Ministry of Defence the identity of two sitting US senators who were present at Foxcote House in North Warwickshire, UK on September 1, 2002. UH contributor Johnny Vedmore had previously obtained information from eyewitnesses of that meeting that, not only were two US Senators present at that location that day, but that Metropolitan Police officers had supplied security for the meeting. The FOI request was filed to Metropolitan Police, the UK Ministry of Defence and North Warwickshire Police and only a response from the Metropolitan Police was received.

The motive for UH’s FOI request is as follows. It is known that Jeffrey Epstein, as attested to by Epstein’s flight logs, was present in this part of the UK during this same period (from August 31, 2002 to September 2, 2002) and eyewitnesses saw him attend this specific meeting at this location with two attractive and glamorously dressed women on each arm. One of these women was Nicole Junkermann, a former model and apparent intelligence asset as revealed in Vedmore’s previous investigative work. The other woman was described by eyewitnesses as a tall brunette. Per those eyewitness accounts, Epstein personally escorted the two women into the room where the two senators were waiting.

Notably the house where this meeting took place, Foxcote House, has been owned by the family of Leslie Wexner, specifically his wife Abigail Wexner, since 1999. Wexner’s role in financing much of Jeffrey Epstein’s activities, legal and illegal, is a major focus of Webb’s upcoming book and Wexner has encountered considerable difficulty in explaining away his relationship with Epstein, despite the largely servile posture of mainstream media in this regard.

Given the circumstances, it seems highly likely that this meeting was a high-profile instance of Jeffrey Epstein engaging in the sexual blackmail of sitting American politicians. However, due to the well-known scandal around Jeffrey Epstein, his name was not used in our FOI request in order to avoid potentially “spiking” the response.

Despite the omission of Epstein’s name, Metropolitan Police responded to the request stating that they can “neither confirm nor deny whether it holds” the requested information. Their response goes on to state that confirming or denying “whether any United States of America (USA) senators were afforded protection could undermine the safeguarding of national security.” It also notes that it blocked providing the requested information on four other grounds aside from “national security” (five in total), including “international relations”, “law enforcement”, “health and safety”, and “personal information.” It also states that providing the requested information could place “those who are afforded protection, protection officers and members of the public at risk.”

UH has since re-filed a new, related FOI request asking why Metropolitan Police officers were providing protection to a meeting where Jeffrey Epstein was present, since his criminal activities are undeniable.

The question? Why did the FBI have a secure workspace at Perkins Coie? They’ve allegedly had it since 2012.

“Perkins Coie is responsible to the FBI for maintaining the Secure Work Environment,” the letter reportedly said.

Gaetz and Jordan are now demanding answers from the FBI. They’ve sent a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray, demanding an explanation.

“We have learned that since March 2012, the FBI approved and facilitated a Secure Work Environment at Perkins Coie’s Washington, D.C. office, which continues to be operational,” the letter states. “In a letter dated May 25, 2022, the law firm confirmed and acknowledged the arrangement.”

The congressmen’s letter states that Michael Sussmann, the former Hillary Clinton campaign lawyer who was acquitted Tuesday of lying to the FBI, had access to the Secure Work Environment until some point in 2021 and had “limited supervised access thereafter.”

The FBI’s response to the question is interesting. They don’t mention Perkins Coie, but implicitly seem to be acknowledging there was such a workspace but appear to be trying to justify it.

“The FBI complies with the law and security policies and works with the Department of Justice to serve classified, Court-authorized legal process necessary to support national security investigations. In certain instances, the FBI coordinates with non-government, third-party entities, such as law firms, that represent service providers which receive these classified Court orders,” an FBI spokesperson told Fox News Digital in a statement.

“This includes providing access to private attorneys which represent the service providers in satisfaction of their legal rights. As part of this, the FBI ensures that any storage of classified orders meets stringent security protocols required for such documents.”

Gaetz said they were demanding answers from Wray by June 15, and that there were serious questions that were raised by this relationship.

“Our concern is that politically motivated dirt was being converted into politically motivated investigations,” Gaetz said on Fox News. “That’s why Jim Jordan and I are making demands for answers on Christopher Wray immediately. And it’s my hope, certainly, that we shut this facility down.”

He wants any records related to the space, who had access to it, and why, not to mention when and how this workspace was approved.

Meanwhile, Perkins isn’t talking.

Congress needs to get a further explanation from Christopher Wray as to what this space was about and why it was at Perkins. If it’s about providing access to Perkins to review records, why isn’t that at the FBI and/or why they just aren’t providing the records? What other places do they have this at besides Perkins as their attempted explanation seems to imply that there are multiple other places? What access to FBI databases might have been given here? And who has had access to this space over the time it has been in operation? And if Sussmann was the contact — who was he working with at the FBI on this?

Leaked Docs Reportedly Show Ecuador's Effort to Take Edward Snowden in From Russian Airport Impasse

 

Snowden's passport was supposedly canceled by the American government when he was en route to South America, leaving him effectively trapped in the Moscow airport. A month later, he would receive asylum and eventually a residency permit, and as of June 2022, he continues to live in Russia with his family.

Former US National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden's international status and asylum were the subjects of a series of messages between the Ecuadorian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility and the Russian Foreign Ministry in the summer of 2013, as Quito tried to secure "international protection" for the whistleblower and provide him safe passage to the Latin American country.

According to a report by the Daily Dot, a trove of documents, emails, and conversations were made public thanks to data stolen from the Ecuadorian Embassy in Moscow by hackers. Over 71,000 files, including passport scans and personal data from visa applications, are allegedly included in the more than 53 gigabytes of material that hackers claiming affiliation with Anonymous handed to the media group DDoSecrets.

Some of the documents in the stache reportedly date as far back as 2013. The fate of Snowden, who notably revealed top secret information about the NSA's surveillance practices that year after escaping to Hong Kong, is the subject of numerous documents that go into depth.

In one such document, dated June 24, 2013, Galo Galarza, then-Ecuadorian foreign minister, is seen asking Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Federation's minister of Foreign Affairs, for permission to send Snowden to Ecuador safely from US special services. The day prior to the message, the US had revoked Snowden's passport.

 

According to the report, citing obtained letters, Galarza also requested Lavrov "take the necessary measures to establish coordination so that the transfer of citizen Edward Snowden… is carried out with the due guarantees of security and integrity," according to the outlet's translation of the Spanish text.

Then, Ecuadorian officials reportedly said the efforts were necessary in light of its choice to "grant international protection" to Snowden. Russia supposedly replied the same day, acknowledging receipt of the letter but requesting more information regarding Ecuador's legal standing.

 

"The Department of Latin America of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, once the content of the same is known, has requested to clarify what Ecuador refers to when it indicates its decision to grant ‘international protection’ since, according to the jurists of the Russian Foreign Ministry, in international law there is no such category," the Russian MFA allegedly told the embassy.

All Speech to be Monitored and Approved by Police in Ottawa

 

Ottawa police have sworn to monitor speech and gestures on Canada Day, adding that they will “actively respond to” anything deemed offensive.

 

While speaking at a Canada Day planning update meeting, interim OPS chief Steve Bell responded to a question regarding potentially offensive speech (speech deemed homophobic, misogynistic, or potentially racist), saying that no such speech would be tolerated.

 

“I think the easiest way to answer that is just with a no,” said Bell, adding that Ottawa police will “actively respond to” and investigate hate or bias crime incidents, intimidation or threats, reports the Ottawa Citizen.

 

In an email to the Ottawa Citizen, Police Service spokesperson Cst. Mike Cudrasov wrote, “Communicating (words spoken or written, gestures or signs) homophobic, misogynistic, and/or racist messages in a public place will be investigated and can lead to various criminal charges including public incitement of hatred Sec 319(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada.”

 

“These will NOT be tolerated.”

 

Potentially offensive speech isn’t the only thing that police say they’ll be looking out for, though. Camping is also a hot topic this year.

 

“Camping and the placement of structures in City Parks are not permitted unless the authority to do so has been granted through a permit. Enforcement will be on a zero-tolerance basis.,” Ottawa By-law tweeted.

 

Leading up to Canada Day, police promised that they would have an “unprecedented and unique” response to any protests planned. Just five days ago, they revealed what that response would entail.

 

On June 24, the City of Ottawa announced several restrictions for Canada Day, including a barricaded motor vehicle control zone with police checkpoints to ban protesters’ vehicles.
