NSO tells lawmakers Pegasus used by multiple EU nations

The Israeli spyware business NSO Group informed European legislators on Tuesday that at least five EU nations have used its software, claiming that the company had canceled at least one contract with an EU member country due to misuse of its Pegasus monitoring software.

Speaking to the European Parliament's committee investigating the use of spyware in Europe, NSO Group's General Counsel Chaim Gelfand admitted that the business had "made mistakes", but claimed that it had also lost a significant amount of cash by allegedly terminating contracts after the abuse was discovered.

Gelfand told members of the PEGA committee that the group was attempting to "do the right thing," claiming that every country that purchases the software is given due diligence regarding the law in the country beforehand.

Gelfand said he would return with a more concrete number, noting that at least 5 nations are using the tool.

Following findings that the malware is prevalent in Europe and has been used against some of the bloc's most famous politicians, including Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and political parties in Spain, Poland, and Hungary, EU parliamentarians initiated the investigation.

The issue in Spain has prompted a government inquiry into the activities of the country's intelligence service, CNI, which Catalan political organizations accuse of spying on leaders of the region's independence movement.

Carles Puigdemont, a member of the investigation committee and a Catalan politician who was targeted with Pegasus spyware, said he backed a total ban on the corporation, citing a recent US decision to blacklist the firm because the organization admitted that it cannot monitor its usage.

In March, the European Parliament formulated a special committee to investigate breaches of law after Hungary and Poland reported illegal use of the program by their respective governments.

The meeting was the culmination of MPs' efforts since March to investigate and limit the use of invasive malware. It was a heated discussion that threatened to devolve into outright hostility as Gelfand dodged probing inquiries.

NSO has attempted to quell the criticism by claiming it hopes to see an international body regulating spyware.

“There’s a lot to be done, that's why we’re calling for an international standard," said Gelfand.

A conspiracy theory takes hold

Four days after Massie aired the video, theright-wing website Revolver published a long article on Epps (a “Fed-Protected Provocateur”) by Darren Beattie, a former Trump speechwriter who had been fired because it was learned he had appeared at a conference with a white supremacist. He followed up with another lengthy article on Dec. 18, which claimed to expose a “massive web of unindicted operators.”

The articles are filled with innuendo, leaps of logic and suspicion to create an impression of a massive federal conspiracy at the heart of the Jan. 6 attack. Beattie suggests that Epps led a “breach team” that set a “booby trap” for unwitting Trump supporters. “If Ray Epps is a Fed, the ‘Insurrection’ becomes the ‘Fedsurrection’ in one fell swoop,” Beattie declared in the second article.

The Beattie articles were gobbled up in the pro-Trump echo chamber like cotton candy.

But the first article hung largely on two elements. First, that Rhodes had not been indicted and was thus “FBI-protected.” (He’s now indicted.) Second, that the Epps photo on the FBI website, photograph #16, had mysteriously disappeared. Beattie suggested a “panicked” FBI suddenly realized one of its operatives was in the public eye.

Blischak, Epps’s lawyer,scoffed at the notion that Epps is working for the FBI, either as an agent or informant. He said Epps was interviewed by the FBI a couple of months after Jan. 6. “I can tell you with confidence he is not an FBI informant,” he said.

He confirmedEpps also spoke in November to the select congressional committeeinvestigating the attack. The committee has issued a statement saying Epps denied acting at the directions of any federal agency.

The FBI, of course, declined to comment. ButMary McCord, a former acting assistant attorney general for national security, said the answer for why his photo was removed is simple. “The FBI no longer needs help identifying him,” she said. “It also seems from his attorney that he has been cooperative, so the FBI isn’t looking for him and has a way to reach him through counsel.” (Blischak told Politico that Epps reached out to the FBI on Jan. 8.)

Blischak said he had asked Epps why he spoke of going toward the Capitol. “He admitted making that statement but he anticipated that it would have been peaceful,” he said. “He’s a straight-up guy. He made it clear he did not condone any type of violence.”right

The Washington Examiner has noted that a woman,Raechel Genco, seen in a video standing next to Epps, has been charged with a count of trespassing on restricted Capitol grounds. Genco’s boyfriend, Ryan Samsel, took part in a breach of a police barrier, just shortly after Epps is observed whispering to him. When the barrier fell, one video shows Epps jogging past it toward the Capitol.

The charging documents include a still image of Genco on the steps of the Capitol building, well inside the restricted area. Epps, in one video, can be seen in the same area, telling another participant, “We’re holding ground — we’re not trying to get people hurt.”But Epps has not faced similar charges.

The Pinocchio Test

There isno evidence that Epps is a federal agent or informant. The available video evidence shows he was part of the crowd at the Capitol on Jan. 6 — a place where the day before he had said he would go — but no videos have emerged showing that he committed or urged acts of violence. He does not appear to have entered the Capitol building itself.

He has been interviewed by the FBI and his attorney sayshe has been cooperative. So there is no mystery why his photo is no longer on the FBI’s website asking for his identification. Epps may yet be charged. But in an event of this magnitude — hundreds of criminal cases — investigators must make choices all the time about whether a prosecution is worth the effort.

Macron: Opposition ready to work on 'major topics'

In his first speech since the election setback, French President Emmanuel Macron stated, on Wednesday, that opposition groups have expressed their readiness to work with his government on "major topics", having lost the parliamentary majority.

In a televised address, Macron added, "They are available to advance on major topics" such as the cost of living, jobs, energy, climate, and health.

The French President deemed any attempt to create a "government of national unity" unlikely after his Together party on Sunday fell short of the majority needed to legislate without others, stressing that such a move was "not justified" at this stage.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Macron approved that the parliamentary elections had exposed social problems in France, however, he urged opposition parties to "leave in-fighting behind" and move "beyond politics".

"Together we will have to learn a new way to govern and to legislate," he said.

He went on to say that urgent draft laws, most notably to lessen the impact of inflation and rising energy prices, would be succumbed to parliament over the summer.

Macron urged the opposition parties to "clarify in all transparency, in the coming days, how far they are willing to go".

He claimed that he himself had been re-elected in April on a platform of "ambitious reform", which he anticipated to carry out.

The French President concluded by saying that the parliamentary impasse should not lead to "stagnation", but to "dialogue and the willingness to listen to each other."

After discovering her pregnancy, she went to her best friend’s house where they discussed options, telling him that abortion could be on the table. However, her friend reminded her of the new law taking effect. A nearby abortion clinic reportedly had no openings before the law went into effect, and her remaining options were 13 hours away in New Mexico.

According to the Post, the abortion law has served as a “major inconvenience” for women, as they have to search for abortion clinics out of state (thats kind of the point WAPO, where babies die in darkness if you got your wish) to sidestep abortion restrictions in their home state. Not to mention, the outlet added, the rising price of gas.

However, she found a place, Pregnancy Center of the Coastal Bend, that performed an ultrasound to see how far along her pregnancy was. According to the Post, “she had no idea she’d walked into a facility designed to dissuade people from getting abortions.”

“Who’s to say what I would have done if the law wasn’t in effect?” Brooke Alexander said. “I don’t want to think about it.”

“I can’t just really be free,” she added. “I guess that really sums it up. That’s a big thing that I really miss.”

She also ended up marrying her boyfriend, which might not have happened if she was able to easily abort her twins, completely altering her current reality.

The Post concluded that the story offers a “glimpse” into what women across the nation would face if, indeed, the Supreme Court overrules Roe v. Wade, framing the entire story with an air of uncertainty and gloom of what could have been, if not for the abortion law taking effect.

That could have, very possibly, changed Brooke’s mind and the outcome of having her babies.

Indeed, the Post’s story comes as the nation awaits the Supreme Court’s decision on Roe v. Wade following a leaked draft opinion penned by Justice Samuel Alito overturning the landmark ruling, which would thereby put the decision in the hands of the states, each of which could make its own abortion laws.

Most Americans believe abortion should be “mostly” or “always” illegal, a Fox News poll released last month found. And according to an October study by the University of Texas at Austin, Lone Star State abortions declined by 50 percent in September compared to the prior year, after the law took effect, saving countless lives.

Ousted Ukrainian Official Breaks Silence, Admits She Lied About Mass Rape By Russians To Garner More Aid/Arm

Lyudmila Denisova, the former Ukrainian Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, was removed from her position following a vote of no confidence in the Ukrainian parliament which passed by a margin of 234-to-9.

Parliament member Pavlo Frolov specifically accused Denisova of pushing misinformation that “only harmed Ukraine” in relation to “the numerous details of ‘unnatural sexual offenses’ and child sexual abuses in the occupied territories, which were unsupported by evidence.”
