The diligent dung beetle provides an important service in Africa
The dung beetle is a vastly underrated little creature, a diligent creature who provides a very important service. So important, in fact, that without them national parks across Africa would be piled high with manure.
I’m not kidding. One researcher recorded that he watched a small, 1.5 kilogram pile of elephant poo on the African savannah attract around 16 000 dung beetles of various shapes and sizes. What’s more, the beetles managed to annihilate that mound of dung in just two hours.
Given the amount of dung that a single elephant can produce in a day, it’s just as well the beetles are as efficient as they are.
