TAMPA, Fla.— Today, Governor Ron DeSantis suspended State Attorney Andrew Warren of the 13th Judicial Circuit due to neglect of duty. The Governor has the authority to suspend a state officer under Article IV, Section 7 of the Constitution of the State of Florida. The Governor has appointed Susan Lopez to serve as State Attorney for the period of suspension. She has most recently been serving as a Judge on the Hillsborough County Court. Bank of England announces biggest interest rate hike since 1995

In an effort to combat the highest inflation rates in 40 years, the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England (BoE) raised interest rates in the UK by 0.5 percent on Thursday, moving them from 1.25 percent to 1.75 percent. The Bank also updated its forecast, suggesting that rates will eventually reach 13 percent before declining.

The bank added that the United Kingdom faces a year-long recession from the fourth quarter.

Since Gordon Brown gave Threadneedle Street authority over interest rates in 1995, this widely anticipated hike represents the largest single increase in rates. Rates hitting 1.75% also marks their highest point since the global financial crisis in 1995.

Prior to the rate increase, Rightmove predicted that an increase of 0.5% would result in new first-time buyers' monthly mortgage payments rising to an average of 40% of their gross income, a level not seen since 2012. For new first-time buyers, the typical mortgage payment would rise to more than £1,000.

“First-time buyers trying to get onto the ladder are currently facing average monthly mortgage payments that are 20% higher than the start of the year due to rising interest rates and asking prices, and that’s assuming they’ve been able to overcome the hurdles to raise a large enough deposit,” said Tim Bannister, Rightmove’s Housing Expert.

He added that a new record first-time buyer asking price of £224,943 means that a 10% deposit for such a property is now “57% higher than it was ten years ago, while average salaries have only increased by 31%”.

However, Nathan Emerson, CEO of Propertymark, was less concerned:

“Buyers will be watching interest rates very closely, but the gradual nature of their upward trajectory from a historically low base is unlikely to be a factor that on its own has too much of an effect on the confidence of those who are serious about moving.

This is borne out by our own data which shows potential buyers registering with our member agents have outnumbered new property listings throughout the first six months of the year, and by seven to one in June alone. During the same period the Monetary Policy Committee has raised the base rate four times.”

Homebuyers were cautioned by Cecilia Mourain, Managing Director for Homebuying at Moneybox, to keep such rate increases in perspective. She added that while they can appear "daunting," there was a big fall in rates in 2020, and rates are still in line with the 10-year average.

“Where possible, aspiring homeowners need to dissociate as much as possible from what’s happening in the very short term, and try to focus on the long term benefits of home ownership. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has suspended State Attorney Andrew Warren for 'picking and choosing which laws to enforce based on his personal agenda,' and has appointed Susan Lopez as his replacement during the suspension.

Warren, who had served the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit, has most recently refused to follow state policy criminalizing abortion in the wake of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade - and repeatedly refused to enforce laws cracking down on child sex-change surgeries, according to DeSantis.

The liberal state attorney also declined to prosecute 67 protesters arrested in George Floyd demonstrations, and said in 2017 that he would only pursue the death penalty "in the very worst cases," and not where "mental illness played a role."

"We are suspending Soros-backed 13th circuit state attorney Andrew Warren for neglecting his duties as he pledges not to uphold the laws of the state," DeSantis' office said in a statement, per Fox News.

DeSantis made the announcement at a Thursday press conference surrounded by Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody and others.

"The constitution of Florida has vested the veto power in the governor, not in individual state attorneys," DeSantis said. "so, when you flagrantly violate your oath of office .. when you make yourself above the law, you have violated your duty and you have neglected your duty, and you are displaying a lack of competence to be able to perform those duties," he continued.

"And so today we are suspending state attorney Andrew Warren, effective immediately," DeSantis concluded to applause.

The punishment stems from a four-year probe into graft under South Africa’s former president, Jacob Zuma.

The investigation, led by Chief Justice Raymond Zondo,determined that billions of dollars in publicly owned assetswere systematically siphoned off — a process known locally as “state capture”.

Bain was hired by the South African government in 2015-16 on a contract to overhaul the country’s revenue service.

The initial contract was to last for six weeks and was worth around $150,000.

But eventually it ran formore than two years, at a cost of more than $9 million, and extended into many other sectors.

The Zondo report said that Bain worked in “collusion” with Zuma, who it said was directly involved in a scheme to undermine the tax service.

The British government said it had taken the decision “in light of Bain’s responsibility as a global brand for its South Africa division and the company’s failure to clarify the facts and circumstances of its involvement”.

A former governor of Puerto Rico was arrested today on bribery charges related to the financing of her 2020 campaign.

Relatedly, a political consultant for the former governor and the president of the international bank have also pleaded guilty to participating in the bribery scheme.

“The alleged bribery scheme rose to the highest levels of the Puerto Rican government, threatening public trust in our electoral processes and institutions of governance,” said Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite, Jr. of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “The Department of Justice is committed to holding accountable those who wrongly believe there is one rule of law for the powerful and another for the powerless. No one is above the rule of law.”

According to the indictment, from December 2019 through June 2020, then-Governor of Puerto Rico Wanda Vazquez Garced, 62, of San Juan, allegedly engaged in a bribery scheme with various individuals, including Julio Martin Herrera Velutini, Frances Diaz, Mark Rossini, and John Blakeman to finance Vazquez Garced’s 2020 gubernatorial election campaign.

Kiev blasts Amnesty report on Ukraine risking civilian lives

The NGO’s accusation that Ukraine violates humanitarian law is “unfair,” Ukraine’s foreign minister said

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba pushed back against an Amnesty International report that blames Kiev for placing its military assets in schools and residential areas, violating humanitarian law and putting civilians at risk.

In his comments posted on social media on Thursday, the minister said that he was outraged by the NGO’s claim.

“I understand that Amnesty will respond to criticism by saying that they criticize both sides of the conflict. But such behavior on Amnesty’s part is not about looking for the truth and presenting it to the world, but about creating a false balance between the criminal and his victim", he said.

Kuleba also urged the organization to stop “creating a fake reality” where everyone is “at fault for something.” Amnesty should primarily focus on what Russia is doing in Ukraine and what devastation Moscow has brought upon this country, he argued.

On Thursday, Amnesty released a report accusing Kiev of “a clear violation of international humanitarian law,” saying it was putting civilian lives at risk by placing its military close to civilian infrastructure.

In 22 out of the 29 schools visited by Amnesty between April and July, the human rights group said it found evidence of current or prior military activity. In five locations, they witnessed Ukrainian troops using hospitals as bases. At the same time, the group said it was “not aware” that Ukraine tried to evacuate civilians from the areas in question.

However, Amnesty also noted that no Ukrainian troops were present in some areas where it assessed Russian forces had delivered strikes on residential areas. For that reason, the NGO said that Ukraine’s unlawful military use of civilian objects did not “in any way justify indiscriminate Russian attacks.”

According to Maria Zakharova, Russia’s foreign ministry spokeswoman, the NGO’s report only confirmed what Moscow has known for a long time. “We’ve been talking about this constantly, calling the actions of the Ukrainian armed forces the tactics of using civilians as a ‘human shield’,” Zakharova said.

Andrew Warren was elected as State Attorney of Florida’s 13th Judicial Circuit, Hillsborough County, in November 2016 and re-elected in November 2020. Among other high-profile cases, he successfully prosecuted Robert Allen Stanford and other executives at Stanford Financial Group for orchestrating one of the largest frauds in history, a $7 billion Ponzi scheme. As a prosecutor, Warren earned multiple accolades from the Justice Department and federal law enforcement agencies, including the 2013 Attorney General Award for Trial Litigation. He has lectured and served on panels across the United States and abroad regarding criminal justice, and he was an instructor at the Justice Department’s national training center.

This is particularly when deciding on military postures, deployment patterns, weapons capabilities, and the like, so that the steps taken by them do not provoke the Russian leadership into pre-emptive or retaliatory strikes…

This is totally in line with America's overall approach of doing the maximum to weaken Russia on the battlefield in Ukraine…

Seen from here, Washington is clearly escalating its participation in the conflictby constantly testing the limits of Russian tolerance of these moves. It started with the provision to Kiev of Javelin anti-tank systems; it was then amplified to include M777 howitzers and HIMARS MLRS systems; it is now moving in the direction of providing Ukraine with U.S.-made military aircraft and training its pilots to fly them. In addition to the new packages of Western sanctions, Russia is also facing pressure on its geopolitically vulnerable outposts, whether regarding goods transit…

So far, =Russia’s actions and inaction have sometimes appeared surprising, even puzzling== to US watchers. Moscow has refrained from strikes against transport links to Poland, cyberattacks against Ukrainian – not to mention U.S. – critical infrastructure, or even destroying bridges across the Dnieper River. It would be safe to say that nothing from this conflict will be forgotten by either side, but at least the Russians have refused to be distracted from their current central task – defeating the enemy's forces in Donbass and taking control over Ukraine’s east and south.

So far, U.S.-led assistance to Kiev, whether military, financial or diplomatic,has not had a decisive impact on the battlefield. It has certainly propped up the Zelensky government and compensated for the Ukrainian forces’ losses of military equipment, thus contributing to the slowing down of Russian advances, but has not turned the tide of the war. One may conclude that the Kremlin sees no need, for now, to do things that would breach the resistance of the Biden Administration to domestic U.S. demands for a more rapid escalation of the U.S. involvement in the conflict….

Looking ahead, one should expect more US escalation in any scenario of the evolution of fighting in Ukraine – whether Russia continues to gain ground (and integrate various new territories into the Russian Federation), or Ukraine mounts a counter-offensive (which so far it has failed to do). Russian officials express concern that a Ukrainian provocation presented as Moscow’s use of chemical weapons – which makes no military or any other sense but would certainly be believed in the US.

Things may become even more serious, however, if the US or its NATO allies enter Ukraine, or otherwise become directly involved in the conflict; if the material assistance which they provide to Kiev starts making a major difference on the battlefield..

Neither Russia nor the US can afford to lose in the conflict now raging in Ukraine. However, the difference between the situations faced by Washington and Moscow is huge. For the American leadership, a failure in Ukraine would be a strategic setback, politically costly both at home and internationally; for the Russian leadership, the outcome of its special military operation is an existential matter.In an asymmetrical conflictlike this one, this amounts to an escalation advantage, if not dominance. What is vital for the two countries and the rest of the world is that this fight does not cross the nuclear threshold.

Parts of damaged port silos collapse on Beirut Blast anniversary

Several more grain silos damaged by the 2020 Beirut port explosion collapsed Thursday, as hundreds marched toward them to mark the second anniversary of the disaster, which destroyed the city and killed over 200, and injured more than 6,500.

AFP correspondents saw parts of the gutted structure fall down, while local media said at least four towers had collapsed, only days after a similar incident.

Experts had been warning for days that the silos could collapse imminently after recording unprecedented inclination rates.

Beirut's grain silos partially collapse after burning for 2 weeks

On Sunday, Beirut port's grain silos partially collapsed. Clouds of dust covered the port area as the silos collapsed - local media reported that 2 towers from the northern section of the silos fell, knowing that a fire has been burning there for more than 2 weeks.

The Minister of Public Works and Transport in the Lebanese caretaker government, Ali Hamie, said that two silos had collapsed from the northern side. The total number of grain silos is 40, and the minister said he expected most of the silos to collapse.

Hamie pointed out that the collapse of the two silos today was "expected according to government technical reports," and he also suggested that "most of the other silos" would collapse in succession.

The Lebanese Minister told Al Mayadeen that the army is using helicopters to extinguish the collapsed silos, adding that there is no fear of toxic emissions, explaining that the government is about to "assign technical committees to examine the silos again."

Hamie said the silos structure building is no longer considered a crime scene as per a judicial decision, stressing, "We are determined to rebuild it."

Much of the explosion's impact was absorbed by the structure on August 4, 2020. The explosion, two years back, was caused by tons of ammonium nitrate fertilizers catching fire.

Two weeks ago, a fire erupted in the northern part of the silos due to the fermentation of the remaining grain stocks, exacerbated by scorching weather temperatures, according to authorities.

Najib Mikati, Lebanon's caretaker Prime Minister, had warned that the silos would soon fall.

He warned workers, civil defense members, and firefighters to keep their distance from the location while keeping the army on alert.

The silos, which hold a capacity of over 100,000 tons, have become a symbol of the Beirut explosion.

In April, the Lebanese government ordered that the premises be demolished, however, it was suspended due to objections, especially from the families of the victims who demand turning the silos into a memorial site of the catastrophe.

The authorities were not able to extract the 3,000 tons of wheat and corn that were stuck in the silos, since the move would probably accelerate the collapse.

The ministries of environment and health warned the public to evacuate the port area and wear masks in case the silos collapse.

Hezbollah calls for depoliticized investigation in Beirut blast

Earlier today, Hezbollah expressed once again its condolences to "the families of all martyrs, Christians, and Muslims, Lebanese and non-Lebanese," as well as the wounded and their families, most notably those who are still in hospitals, on the second anniversary of the tragic explosion at the port of Beirut.

In a statement, Hezbollah reaffirmed its stance, calling for a just investigation into the Beirut port blast which is based on legal principles and away from any political and sectarian bias.

Griner jailed for nine years in Russian drugs trial

A judge at Khimki City Court outside Moscow delivered the verdict on Thursday

US women's basketball player Brittney Griner has been handed a nine-year prison sentence after being found guilty in her drugs trial at a court just outside Moscow.

The sentence is only slightly more lenient than the one demanded by prosecutors earlier on Thursday, after they had requested a nine-and-a-half-year term for Griner.

In addition, the presiding judge ordered Griner to pay a fine of 1 million Russian rubles ($16,200) as part of the case, after she was found guilty of attempting to smuggle illegal narcotics into the country.

Griner's legal team immediately said they would appeal the sentence, according to reports from Khimki City Court.

Griner had claimed in her defense that the hashish oil vape cartridges found in her luggage at Sheremetyevo Airport on February 17 had ended up there unintentionally, after she had been packing in a hurry.

Whether Griner serves the entirety of her sentence in Russia remains to be seen.

The two-time Olympic champion has become the topic of political discussions, with US officials classifying Griner as “wrongfully detained.”

Those accusations have been staunchly denied by Moscow, which has consistently said that Griner must face Russian law and that no exceptions can be made just because she is a foreigner.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken revealed last month that Washington had made Moscow a “substantial offer” for the release of Griner and fellow American Paul Whelan, a former Marine who has been convicted of espionage charges in Russia.

Reports claimed that a deal could be made involving Russian businessman Viktor Bout, who is serving 25 years in a US prison for arms dealing.

CNN later said Moscow wants Vadim Krasikov, a Russian national convicted of murder in Germany last year, to be included in a potential prisoner exchange.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke to Blinken last week after a request from Washington, although Moscow did not comment on the specific details of any potential prisoner swap.

Moscow has frequently urged diplomacy through established channels, warning Washington against political grandstanding in its efforts to exert pressure for Griner's return.

Griner herself said in remarks at her trial on Thursday that she wanted to distance herself from the political furor surrounding the case as she apologized for what she described as “an honest mistake.”

After her sentence was read out, Griner was described by Reuters as appearing “sad and stony-faced” but confirmed that she “understood the sentence.”

Griner is widely considered among the greatest female basketball players ever, and is an eight-time WNBA All-Star with the Phoenix Mercury in her homeland.

She had been traveling to Russia on a lucrative deal to play for UMMC Ekaterinburg during the WNBA offseason, something she has done since 2015.

From Houston, Texas, Griner said she considered Ekaterinburg something of a second home.

Now that a verdict and sentence have been delivered in her case, efforts will likely be stepped up in Washington to secure a swap deal with Moscow for her release.

Walmart has begun to lay off corporate employees, the company confirmed Wednesday, about a week after it slashed its profit outlook and warned that consumers had pulled back on discretionary spending due to inflation.

In a statement to CNBC, the retail giant described the layoffs as a way to “better position the company for a strong future.”

Anne Hatfield, a Walmart spokesperson, declined to say how many workers will be affected and what divisions have experienced cuts. She said Walmart is still hiring in parts of its business that are growing, including supply chain, e-commerce, health and wellness and advertising sales.

“Shoppers are changing. Customers are changing,” she said. “We are doing some restructuring to make sure we’re aligned.”

The corporate layoffs were first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Walmart is the largest employer in the country, with nearly 1.6 million workers in the U.S. The company, seen as a bellwether for the nation’s economy, spooked investors on July 25 when it cut its outlook for quarterly and full-year profit guidance. That warning had a chilling effect on the retail sector, dragging down the stocks of companies including Macy’s and Amazon and sending up a flare about the health of the American consumer.

Walmart said at the time that as shoppers spent more on necessities such as groceries and fuel, they were skipping over high-margin merchandise including apparel. It said it would have to cut prices to sell more of those items, especially as a glut of inventory piled up in its stores and at those of competitors such as Target and Bed Bath & Beyond.

Later that same week, Best Buy cut its profit and sales forecast, saying it was seeing softening demand for consumer electronics — big-ticket, discretionary purchases that some shoppers can postpone.

As recession worries linger, the U.S. jobs market appears increasingly segmented.

U.S. job openings in June dropped sharply, but the labor backdrop remains tight, with 1.8 open jobs per available worker. Many of the companies that boomed during the pandemic, including Walmart’s major competitor Amazon, have started to scale back on hiring.

Amazon’s headcount shrank by 99,000 people to 1.52 million employees globally at the end of the second quarter. The company’s workforce had almost doubled in size during the Covid health crisis as it rushed to keep up with customer demand for groceries, puzzles and more online.

That reduction was primarily due to attrition, Amazon Chief Financial Officer Brian Olsavsky said on a call with reporters after the company’s second-quarter earnings report last week.

Other companies, including Shopify and Robinhood, have also recently announced layoffs. And still others, such as Facebook parent Meta and Google parent Alphabet, have said they will slow hiring or focus on more productivity with current workers.

It’s unclear whether Walmart has also slowed its pace of hiring at stores and warehouses, which would allow attrition to shrink its workforce. The company will report its quarterly earnings on Aug. 16 and will likely provide an update on overall headcount.

Microsoft, MIT partner for IoT-enabled wearable tattoo

PhD students have partnered with Microsoft Research to develop a new type of wearable.

At a time when wearables are becoming increasingly accepted as a useful part of our day to day lives, the challenge for developers is beginning to shift to the details, to making the user experience as seamless as possible.

The logical move is to take wearable technology one step further. The point at which wearables are no longer ‘worn’ and instead become integrated with the user, is when a real Internet of Things (IoT) revolution will have occurred. With this aim in mind, PhD researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have teamed up with Microsoft Research to develop temporary smart tattoos. This experimental form of wearable can be used to control electronics or send data through NFC.

DuoSkin wearable can conduct electricity

The technology developed has been named DuoSkin, and is essentially a “fabrication process”, through which anyone can create a custom device that can be attached to the skin to function as a user interface. The on-skin devices are made of gold leaf, a non-abrasive, relatively cheap material capable of withstanding day-to-day wear and tear and conducting electricity.

The design process begins with the creation of circuitry stencils, which are eventually used to form a gold leaf shell. Tiny electronic parts, including a communication chip, are added to the tattoo before the entire device is attached to the user’s skin via the kind of water transfer that will be familiar to anyone with a childhood experience of temporary tattoos.

Built into the metallic on-skin tattoos are elements found in many user interfaces, such as buttons, sliders, and 2D trackpads. The idea is that using DuoSkin should feel familiar. The technology has also been designed to change color based on skin temperature. This was made possible by including resistive heating elements underneath the thermochromic layer.

For many people the idea of a tattoo is the stuff of nightmares, but the creators of DuoSkin think their idea could combine aesthetics with functionality. A statement on the DuoSkin website reads:

“DuoSkin devices enable users to control their mobile devices, display information, and store information on their skin while serving as a statement of personal style. We believe that in the future, on-skin electronics will no longer be black-boxed and mystified; instead, they will converge towards the user friendliness, extensibility, and aesthetics of body decorations, forming a DuoSkin integrated to the extent that it has seemingly disappeared.”

Advanced wearable keeps hands free

Ian Hughes, an Internet of Things analyst at 451 Research, suggested that DuoSkin is the latest in a line of technologies helping user interfaces blend with the physical world.

“We have already seen the rapid shift from keyboards and mice to touch screens in a few short years”, he said. Gesture, touch, location, and voice are all becoming practical and usable as our technology fragments physically but remains network connected – this input form of augmented reality is another example.”

“In B2C it becomes not only functional but fashionable, like in the early days of Apple Ipod when the white headphone leads indicated your technology choice. In B2B these interfaces may fit more with health and safety needs, making it easier and safer to report in while in a risky situation, or as a panic button for staff out in the community.”

User interface fragmentation a challenge for developers

Although the increasing fragmentation of interfaces offers many challenges for developers, Hughes hinted that the more integrated we become with our devices, the less chance there will be of security issues.

“For developers, the fragmentation of user interfaces is a challenge, they will have to deal with multiple types of interface and work out how to inform the user of what multi-function buttons and sliders might mean,” he said. “Security may be difficult, though the closer to human augmentation we get the more biometrics signals can be read without the user needing to login or unlock applications.

According to new research, napping on a regular basis is associated with higher risks for high blood pressure and stroke.

American Heart Association study shows link between frequent naps and high blood pressure.

Frequent or usual daytime napping in adults was associated with a 24% high risk of having a stroke and a 12% higher risk of developing high blood pressure compared to never napping.

Experts say napping, though not unhealthy, could be a sign of poor sleep quality.

A higher percentage of frequent nappers were men, had lower education and income levels, and reported daily drinking, cigarette smoking, insomnia, snoring, and being an evening person compared to people who reported napping sometimes or never.

The Mendelian randomization result shows that if napping frequency increased by one category (from never to sometimes or sometimes to usually) high blood pressure risk increased by 40%.

According to new research published on July 25, 2022, in Hypertension, an American Heart Association journal, napping on a regular basis is associated with higher risks for high blood pressure and stroke.

For the research, scientists in China investigated whether frequent naps could be a potential causal risk factor for high blood pressure and/or stroke. It is the first study to investigate whether frequent napping was associated with high blood pressure and ischemic stroke using both observational analyses of participants over a long period of time and Mendelian randomization – a genetic risk validation.

“These results are especially interesting since millions of people might enjoy a regular, or even daily nap,” says E Wang, Ph.D., M.D., a professor and chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at Xiangya Hospital Central South University, and the study’s corresponding author.

For the study, researchers used information from UK Biobank. This large biomedical database and research resource contains anonymized genetic, lifestyle, and health information from half a million UK participants. Between 2006 and 2010, UK Biobank recruited more than 500,000 participants between the ages of 40 and 69 who lived in the United Kingdom. The participants regularly provided blood, urine, and saliva samples, as well as detailed information about their lifestyles. The daytime napping frequency survey occurred 4 times from 2006 – 2019 in a small proportion of UK Biobank participants.

Wang’s team excluded records of people who had already had a stroke or had high blood pressure before the start of the study. This left about 360,000 participants to analyze the association between napping and first-time reports of stroke or high blood pressure, with an average follow-up of about 11 years. Participants were divided into three groups based on self-reported napping frequency: “never/rarely,” “sometimes,” or “usually.”

The study found:

A higher percentage of usual-nappers were men, had lower education and income levels, and reported daily drinking, cigarette smoking, snoring, insomnia, and being an evening person compared to never- or sometimes-nappers;

People who usually nap had a 12% higher likelihood of developing high blood pressure and 24% higher likelihood of having a stroke compared to people who reported never taking a nap;

Participants younger than age 60 who usually napped had a 20% higher risk of developing high blood pressure compared to people the same age who never napped. After age 60, usual napping was associated with a 10% higher risk of high blood pressure compared to those who reported never napping;

About three-fourths of participants remained in the same napping category throughout the study;

The Mendelian randomization result showed that if napping frequency increased by one category (from never to sometimes or sometimes to usually) high blood pressure risk increased 40%. Higher napping frequency was related to the genetic propensity for high blood pressure risk.

“This may be because, although taking a nap itself is not harmful, many people who take naps may do so because of poor sleep at night. Poor sleep at night is associated with poorer health, and naps are not enough to make up for that,” said Michael A. Grandner, Ph.D., MTR, a sleep expert and co-author of the American Heart Association’s new Life’s Essential 8 cardiovascular health score, which added sleep duration in June 2022 as the 8th metric for measuring optimal heart and brain health. “This study echoes other findings that generally show that taking more naps seems to reflect increased risk for problems with heart health and other issues.” Grander is director of the Sleep Health Research Program and the Behavioral Sleep Medicine Clinic and associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

The researchers recommend further examination of the associations between a healthy sleep pattern, including daytime napping, and heart health.

Several important limitations of the study should be considered. Zelensky wants talks with China

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said on Thursday he would like to speak “directly” with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, as he urged Beijing to use its economic and political leverage to stop the conflict in his country.

In an exclusive interview with the South China Morning Post, Zelensky noted that he had not spoken to the Chinese leader since the start of Russia’s military offensive in Ukraine.

“I would like to talk directly. I had one conversation with [President] Xi Jinping that was a year ago,” he said. “Since the beginning of the large-scale aggression on February 24, we have asked officially for a conversation, but we (haven’t had) any conversation with China even though I believe that would be helpful.”

According to Zelensky, Xi is one of a handful of world leaders who have been to Ukraine “at least once,” adding that the Chinese president warmly recalled his ties with Kiev during a call between the two leaders last year.

Zelensky stressed that he wants to see China redefine its stance on Russia, but understands why Beijing is seeking a “balanced” approach.

“This is a war on our territory, they [Russia] came to invade. China, as a big and powerful country, could come down and sort of put the Russian Federation [in] a certain place,” he said. “Of course, I would really like China to review its attitude towards the Russian Federation.”

Zelensky said he believes China has the means to make Russia stop its offensive.

“I’m sure that without the Chinese market for the Russian Federation, Russia would be feeling complete economic isolation,” he said. “That’s something that China can do – to limit the trade [with Russia] until the war is over.”

The Ukrainian president also warned of the long-term global consequences of the conflict, which he predicted will harm food and energy security and also slash Chinese exports. According to Zelensky, due to the ongoing hostilities, many countries are spending more on food, fuel and weapons rather than other goods.

“The people would have to pay for energy resources rather than for products coming from China … Exports from China would be decreasing. That’s 100 per cent,” he reiterated.

China has refused to condemn Russia for the Ukraine conflict and has opposed sweeping economic sanctions that the West has slapped on Moscow. Beijing has also blamed NATO expansion for the tensions between Western powers and Russia, adding that the West has to “understand Russia’s legitimate security concerns” and “build a sustainable European security system through negotiation.”

Russia sent troops into Ukraine on February 24, citing Kiev’s failure to implement the Minsk agreements, designed to give the regions of Donetsk and Lugansk special status within the Ukrainian state. The protocols, brokered by Germany and France, were first signed in 2014. Former Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko has since admitted that Kiev’s main goal was to use the ceasefire to buy time and “create powerful armed forces.”

In February 2022, the Kremlin recognized the Donbass republics as independent states and demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join any Western military bloc. Kiev insists the Russian offensive was completely unprovoked.

[WASHINGTON, D.C. – Aug. 2, 2022] Project Veritas released a newly leaked document today provided by an FBI whistleblower, which shows how the Bureau classifies American citizens it deems to be potential “Militia Violent Extremists” [MVEs].

In the document, the FBI cites symbols, images, phrases, events, and individuals that agents should look out for when identifying alleged domestic terrorists.

The “Unclassified/Law Enforcement Sensitive” document says it is for “FBI Internal Use Only.”

Of note, under the “Symbols” section, is a prominent citation of the Second Amendment, where it explains that “MVEs justify their existence with the Second Amendment, due to the mention of a ‘well regulated Militia,’ as well as the right to bear arms.”

Right below that, under the “Commonly Referenced Historical Imagery and Quotes” section, Revolutionary War images such as the Gadsden Flag and the Betsy Ross Flag are listed. Each flag displayed in the document comes with a brief description of what it means.

Under the “Common Phrases and References” section of the leaked document, Ashli Babbitt is cited as a person that MVEs consider to be a Martyr.

The same document also refers to Ruby Ridge, Waco, and even Timothy McVeigh, tying in traditional American ideas and symbols with radical and/or violent events in the past.
