Here's a simple way to calculate and prove the distance to the sun. Just get over the cartoon sun in this illustration and spare me your wrath —
Use the real sun, the trig remains true to math and science, and we can all agree numbers dont lie. This would be a great experiment to do with children, or friends.
It's a trigonometry sun distance from earth calculation that you can personally verify interactively by teaming up with someone at a distant location and measuring the angles to the sun in the sky. Those measurements have to be made at the same time, and one party needs to be where the sun is perpendicular overhead to them. Then you plug in the other party's angle to the sun and distance between the two, and run the calculations.
Your experiment may not match this example exactly, but I guarantee that it will not be anywhere close to 93,000,000 miles. And you can do it yourself.
This example uses Portland and NY, 3000 miles apart, and takes the angles formed to the sun in the sky from both locations, one being perpendicular.
You can use any two locations you want. Use lot's of locations for solid results. The more better. We can all learn something.
