'Here in New Zealand we recently legislated to decriminalise abortion and treat it as a health rather than criminal issue.

Imaged on June 20 2022, comet C/2017 K2 (PanSTARRS) shares this wide telescopic field of view with open star cluster IC 4665 and bright star Beta Ophiuchi, near a starry edge of the Milky Way. On its maiden voyage to the inner Solar System from the dim and distant Oort cloud, this comet PanSTARRS was initially spotted over five years ago, in May 2017. Then it was the most distant active inbound comet ever found, discovered when it was some 2.4 billion kilometers from the Sun. That put it between the orbital distances of Uranus and Saturn. Hubble Space Telescope observations indicated the comet had a large nucleus less than 18 kilometers in diameter. Now visible in small telescopes C/2017 K2 will make its closest approach to planet Earth on July 14 and closest approach to the Sun this December. Its extended coma and developing tail are seen here at a distance of some 290 million kilometers, a mere 16 light-minutes away.

AJapanese court has ruled that a ban on same-sex marriage does not violate the country's constitution.

 

Judge Doi Fumi, of the Osaka District Court, ruled Monday that the Japanese Constitution does not confer protections on gay marriage. The plaintiffs in the case, three same-sex couples, say they will appeal the ruling to the Osaka High Court.

 

The court agreed with the case presented by the government, which argued that the purpose of marriage is reproduction. Furthermore, the court determined, according to a translation of the ruling, that marriage serves the "pragmatic purpose" of "protecting men and women to bear children and raise them together in cohabitation."

 

"Marriage shall be based only on the mutual consent of both sexes and it shall be maintained through mutual cooperation with the equal rights of husband and wife as a basis," reads the Japanese Constitution.

 

The ruling, according to a BBC translation, did recognize that for the sake of "individual dignity," there is likely "some benefit" to officially recognizing same-sex couples.

The Foundation Funding the โ€œFact-Checkersโ€ Who Defend the Chinese Communist Party Is Heavily Invested in China.

 

The Knight Foundation โ€“ a George Soros-linked, left-wing group purporting to tackle disinformation by funding anti-conservative media operations and โ€œfact-checkersโ€ โ€“ has investments in firms tied to the Russian government and Chinese Communist Party, The National Pulse can exclusively reveal.

 

The groupโ€™s most recent financial disclosures reveal over $17,000,000 invested in a Chinese Communist Party-linked investment fund and over $1,200,000 invested in Russia Partners โ€“ which boasts of its close connections to โ€œgovernment leaders in Russia.โ€

 

The unearthed financial ties come as the group continues to peddle conspiracy theories about Russian influence in the 2016 election and purports to โ€œprotect press freedomโ€ while investing in countries whose journalism sectors are consistently ranked among the least free.

Since at least 2011, the Knight Foundationโ€™s financial disclosure forms reveal two investments: IDG-Accel China Capital II and IDG-Accel China Growth III.

 

The most recent financial disclosure on the Knight Foundationโ€™s site shows that in 2019 the value of the investments totaled $11,597,551 and $6,066,392, respectively.

 

From 2013 to 2015, the groupโ€™s financial disclosures also listed China as a โ€œforeign country in which organization has financial interest.โ€

 

The two Chinese private equity funds describe themselves as โ€œmaking investments within Chinaโ€ โ€“ and often in state-run companies.

 

At least a dozen of the fundโ€™s employees have ties to the Chinese Communist Party, including former officials in the technology and urban planning sectors along with the State Department., former employees of the Chinese military proxy China Mobile, and recipients of Chinese Communist Party awards for โ€œPushing the Area Economy Forward.โ€

 

Senior Advisor Jianning Jiang also serves as a Chief Advisor to the body overseeing Chinaโ€™s various Communist Youth Leagues.

 

Chinese state-run media directors, several ex-employees of state-run investment funds, fellows from state-run think tanks, and professors and Peopleโ€™s Liberation Army-linked colleges.

 

Aimed at boosting the Chinese economy, the investment group describes one of its primary goals as โ€œupgrading and transform[ing] the Chinese economy by partnering with Chinese companies to acquire technology and industrial know-how abroadโ€ and admits to having โ€œpartneredโ€ with the Chinese Communist Party city-level governments to do so.

 

Companies the firm has invested in have also count the Chinese Communist Party as customers and include firms such as Tencent โ€“ which has been described by the U.S. State Department as a โ€œtool of the Chinese governmentโ€ โ€“ in its portfolio.

Since 2011, the Knight Foundation has also retained investments with the private equity fund Russia Partners.

 

In 2011, the foundation had two investments in Russia Partners funds valued at over $21,000,000. The latest financial disclosure reveals one investment with the company valued at $1,234,020.

US law enforcement agencies sailed the Amadea out of Fiji yesterday, after a ruling by the country's Supreme Court. During the court proceedings, it was argued that the Amadea was owned by Eduard Khudainatov, a Russian oil executive who has not been sanctioned by the U.S., and therefore, the US government had no claim to seize the yacht.

 

However, the US lawyers responded: "Khudainatov is a second-tier oligarch (at best) who would not have anywhere near the resources to purchase and maintain more than $1 billion worth of luxury yachts," an FBI agent wrote in the warrant application, after noting that Khudainatov is not included on Forbes' billionaires list.

 

The Justice Department says the $300 million Amadea's true owner is Suleiman Kerimov, a sanctioned billionaire oligarch who made his money in gold mining. The court accepted the validity of the US warrant and agreed that issues concerning money laundering and ownership need to be decided in the court of original jurisdiction, in this case, the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C.

 

The crew, whose pay had already been frozen due to sanctions, were "refusing to sail on the Amadea with the U.S. authorities to an unknown destination," the captain wrote in his affidavit. He added that they feared cooperating with the U.S., in breach of their contracts with the ship's owner, would damage their reputations in the yachting industry. By the end of May, contractors for the U.S. had hired a new crew of 24, led by a captain who had previously been at the helm of the Amadea.

Based on the initial report from the medical examiner, no cause of death for Harrison Wagner was given.

 

The spokesperson for the L.A. Coronerโ€™s Office released another statement this week saying that the cause of Harrisonโ€™s death requires more investigation and is listed as โ€œdeferred.โ€

 

โ€œCause of death is deferred,โ€ the spokesperson told PEOPLE. โ€œDeferred means that after an autopsy, a cause of death has not been determined and the medical examiner is requesting more investigation into the death, including additional studies.โ€

 

โ€œOnce the tests/studies come back, the doctor evaluates the case again and makes the cause of death determination,โ€ the statement concludes.

The company revealed that it was working on technology that would allow its voice assistant to impersonate people with a recording of somebodyโ€™s voice less than a minute long.

 

It displayed the feature allowing the synthetic voice of a deceased grandmother to read to her grandson. In a video displaying the technology, a child asked โ€œAlexa, can grandma finish reading me the Wizard of Oz?โ€.

 

The smart speaker acknowledged the request in its synthetic computer-generated voice before switching to a replica of the grandmotherโ€™s voice.

 

Amazon did not say when it expects to release the feature or whether it plans to restrict how it is used.

Pentaquarks: scientists find new "exotic" configurations of quarks

 

Scientists have found new ways in which quarks, the tiniest particles known to humankind, group together.

The new structures exist for just a hundred thousandth of a billionth of a billionth of a second but may explain how our Universe is formed.

Atoms contain smaller particles called neutrons and protons, which are made up of three quarks each.

"Exotic" matter discovered in recent years is made up of four and five quarks - tetraquarks and pentaquarks.

Scientists at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland have discovered one new pentaquark and two tetraquarks. This takes the total number discovered there to 21. Each is unique, but researchers are excited about the qualities of the three new finds.

The new pentaquark decays into particles that none of the others produce, while the two tetraquarks have the same mass, suggesting they may be the first known pair of exotic structures.

Perhaps even more importantly, though, the latest finds mean that there are now enough of these particles to begin grouping them together, like the chemical elements in the periodic table. That is an essential first step towards creating a theory and set of rules governing exotic mass.

In light of the new discoveries, physicists are discussing this very issue at a special seminar on Tuesday at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, which houses the Large Hadron Collider.

Working out miniscule differences between the tiniest things we know about may seem arcane, but the interaction of quarks creates the so-called "strong force" that holds the insides of atoms - and by extension our entire Universe - together.

"The strong force is extremely difficult to calculate, and we don't have firm predictions of how the exotic pentaquarks and tetraquarks are built," says Prof Chris Parkes of Manchester University. Leaked Docs Reportedly Show Ecuador's Effort to Take Edward Snowden in From Russian Airport Impasse

 

Snowden's passport was supposedly canceled by the American government when he was en route to South America, leaving him effectively trapped in the Moscow airport. A month later, he would receive asylum and eventually a residency permit, and as of June 2022, he continues to live in Russia with his family.

Former US National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden's international status and asylum were the subjects of a series of messages between the Ecuadorian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility and the Russian Foreign Ministry in the summer of 2013, as Quito tried to secure "international protection" for the whistleblower and provide him safe passage to the Latin American country.

According to a report by the Daily Dot, a trove of documents, emails, and conversations were made public thanks to data stolen from the Ecuadorian Embassy in Moscow by hackers. Over 71,000 files, including passport scans and personal data from visa applications, are allegedly included in the more than 53 gigabytes of material that hackers claiming affiliation with Anonymous handed to the media group DDoSecrets.

Some of the documents in the stache reportedly date as far back as 2013. The fate of Snowden, who notably revealed top secret information about the NSA's surveillance practices that year after escaping to Hong Kong, is the subject of numerous documents that go into depth.

In one such document, dated June 24, 2013, Galo Galarza, then-Ecuadorian foreign minister, is seen asking Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Federation's minister of Foreign Affairs, for permission to send Snowden to Ecuador safely from US special services. The day prior to the message, the US had revoked Snowden's passport.

 

According to the report, citing obtained letters, Galarza also requested Lavrov "take the necessary measures to establish coordination so that the transfer of citizen Edward Snowdenโ€ฆ is carried out with the due guarantees of security and integrity," according to the outlet's translation of the Spanish text.

Then, Ecuadorian officials reportedly said the efforts were necessary in light of its choice to "grant international protection" to Snowden. Russia supposedly replied the same day, acknowledging receipt of the letter but requesting more information regarding Ecuador's legal standing.

Google on Monday shipped security updates to address a high-severity zero-day vulnerability in its Chrome web browser that it said is being exploited in the wild.

 

The shortcoming, tracked as CVE-2022-2294, relates to a heap overflow flaw in the WebRTC component that provides real-time audio and video communication capabilities in browsers without the need to install plugins or download native apps.

 

Heap buffer overflows, also referred to as heap overrun or heap smashing, occur when data is overwritten in the heap area of the memory, leading to arbitrary code execution or a denial-of-service (DoS) condition.

 

"Heap-based overflows can be used to overwrite function pointers that may be living in memory, pointing it to the attacker's code," MITRE explains. "When the consequence is arbitrary code execution, this can often be used to subvert any other security service."

 

Credited with discovering and reporting the flaw on July 1, 2022, is Jan Vojtesek from the Avast Threat Intelligence team. It's worth pointing out that the bug also impacts the Android version of Chrome.

 

As is usually the case with zero-day exploitation, details pertaining to the flaw as well as other specifics related to the campaign have been withheld to prevent further abuse in the wild and until a significant chunk of users are updated with a fix.

 

CVE-2022-2294 also marks the resolution of the fourth zero-day vulnerability in Chrome since the start of the year -

Turkey detains Russian-flagged vessel carrying grain โ€“ media

 

Kievโ€™s ambassador to Ankara claims the cargo ship was transporting grain from Ukraine

 

Turkey has seized a Russian-flagged cargo ship after Kiev claimed it was involved in โ€œillegalโ€ transport of Ukrainian grain, Reuters reported on Sunday, citing the Ukrainian Ambassador to Turkey, Vasily Bodnar.

 

"We have full co-operation. The ship is currently standing at the entrance to the port, it has been detained by the customs authorities of Turkey," Vasily Bodnar told Ukrainian national television. According to the ambassador, investigators will decide on the vesselโ€™s fate on Monday.

 

The move comes two days after Ukrainian diplomats called on the Turkish authorities to detain the vessel, the Zhibek Zholy, arguing that it was transporting โ€œstolenโ€ Ukrainian agricultural produce.

 

The ship departed from the Azov Sea port of Berdyansk, located not far from the city of Mariupol โ€“ which is controlled by Russian forces and Donbass militias โ€“ and arrived at the Turkish port of Karasu, Bodnar wrote in a series of Twitter posts on Friday, asking Turkey to โ€œtake relevant measures.โ€

 

The diplomat also said that the mission had โ€œgood communication and close cooperationโ€ with the Turkish side on the matter, and he was sure the โ€œagreed decisionsโ€ would โ€œprevent attempts to violate the sovereignty of Ukraine.โ€

 

The ship allegedly loaded around 4,500 tons of grain in Berdyansk, Reuters reported, citing an unnamed Ukrainian official. The news agency also noted that the Ukrainian Prosecutor Generalโ€™s Office sent a letter to Turkeyโ€™s Justice Ministry in late June, claiming the vessel had been involved in the โ€œillegal export of Ukrainian grain.โ€

 

According to the letter, the vessel had 7,000 tons of cargo on board.

 

Ukraine then asked Turkey to โ€œconduct an inspection of this sea vessel, seize samples of grain for forensic examinationโ€ to determine its origin, and expressed its readiness to launch a joint investigation with the Turkish authorities.

 

The Kazakhstan-based KTZ Express company, which owns the Zhibek Zholy, told Reuters that the ship was leased to a Russian firm called Green Line, which is not subject to any sanctions.

 

Russian authorities have not yet commented on the development.

 

Ukraine, a major grain producer, is unable to export its grain by sea due to the ongoing conflict in the country, with an estimated 22-25 million tons of grain currently stuck in the countryโ€™s ports. Kiev has previously accused Russia of โ€œstealingโ€ its grain โ€“ something Moscow has denied.

 

The Western nations have blamed Russia for blocking the ports. Moscow has repeatedly stated it would guarantee safe passage for the grain shipments if Kiev clears its ports of mines. Ukraine, in turn, has accused the Russian forces of mining the Black Sea ports. Russia suggested exporting the grain through the Russian-controlled ports of Berdyansk and Mariupol.

In a huge defeat for the U.S. Department of Justice, a jury today acquitted two men accused of conspiring to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer in the fall of 2020 and deadlocked on a verdict for two other defendants. The verdicts were announced at the Gerald R. Ford Federal Building in Grand Rapids after more than four days of deliberations; jurors heard 13 days of testimony in a case the government considered one of its biggest domestic terrorism investigations ever.

 

Daniel Harris and Brandon Caserta of Michigan were found not guilty of conspiring โ€œto unlawfully seize, confine, kidnap, abduct and carry away, and hold for ransom and reward, or otherwise, the Governor of the State of Michigan.โ€ Jurors could not reach a unanimous decision for Adam Fox, the alleged ringleader, and Barry Croft, Jr., resulting in a mistrial.

 

Harris was also found not guilty on charges of conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction for allegedly attempting to build an explosive device to use in the abduction scheme and other firearms charges.

 

Jurors this morning notified Chief U.S. District Court Judge Robert Jonker that they had reached a verdict on several charges but were deadlocked on others. Jonker urged the jury of six men and six women to continue deliberating under a soft โ€œAllen charge,โ€ which instructs jurors to keep pushing for a unanimous verdict but they later notified Jonker the outcome was the same.

 

Defense attorneys had arguedโ€”successfully, it would appearโ€”that their clients were entrapped by the FBI; at least a dozen FBI confidential human sources and undercover agents working out of numerous FBI field offices were deeply embedded in the plot.

 

Jonker ruled before the trial began on March 8 that defense counsel could not raise the entrapment issue until the government rested its case, but that plan was quickly scuttled when it became obvious the four defense attorneys were unable effectively to represent their clients without demonstrating the FBIโ€™s extensive involvement. To prove entrapment, the defense had to convince the jury that the government induced the criminal behavior and the defendants lacked predisposition to carry out the kidnapping conspiracy on their own.

 

Against the objections of prosecutors, Jonker notified the jury last Friday they could consider entrapment. Jonker advised jurors to ask themselves whether โ€œthe agent or informant persuade[d] the defendant who is not already willing to commit a crime to do something illegal?โ€

 

A roster of FBI agents and experts took the stand during the three-week trial, which was temporarily delayed due to one participantโ€™s COVID diagnosis; Dan Chappel, the lead informant and governmentโ€™s star witness known as โ€œBig Dan,โ€ explained how he brought the makeshift group of alleged โ€œmilitiaโ€ members together after he was hired by the FBI in March 2020. Chappel created encrypted chat groups and organized excursions for field training and surveillance of Whitmerโ€™s cottage. (He, along with other FBI informants, posed as leaders of two โ€œmilitiaโ€ groups, at least one of which was created by the FBI.)

In the six decades that have passed since Australia formally joined the alliance, intelligence and operational sharing has helped keep our countries safe.

A historic West Virginia Catholic Church was burned to the ground on Sunday in a suspected arson attack.

Pro-abortion extremists called for violence and vandalism against churches in response to the Supreme Courtโ€™s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

 

The St. Colman Catholic Church, better known as the โ€œThe Little Catholic Church on Irish Mountain,โ€ was built in 1878 and was declared an official historic site in 1984.

 

โ€œOn 6/26/2022 units from Beaver VFD were alerted to a structure fire at the Saint Colman Catholic Church on Irish Mountain Road in Shady Spring, WV,โ€ the Beaver Volunteer Fire Department said in a Facebook post. โ€œUpon arrival we found the structure was already burned to the ground and smoldering. At this time the fire is considered suspicious in nature and is being investigated as arson.โ€

In a manifesto posted by Janeโ€™s Revenge on June 15, the group vowed to escalate their attacks and called for others to commit similar acts.

 

The group expressly took credit for arsons and vandalism at pregnancy centers in โ€œMadison WI, Ft. Collins CO, Reisertown MA, Olympia WA, Des Moines IA, Lynwood WA, Washington DC, Ashville NC, Buffalo NY, Hollywood FL, Vancouver WA, Frederick MA, Denton TX, Gresham OR, Eugene OR, Portland OR, among others.โ€

 

They stated, โ€œwe promised to take increasingly drastic measures against oppressive infrastructures. Rest assured that we will, and those measures may not come in the form of something so easily cleaned up as fire and graffiti.โ€

China says it may have detected signals from alien civilization

 

Chinaโ€™s science ministry says theyโ€™ve picked up signals on one of their telescopes that could be signs of an alien civilization.

 

The scientists at Beijing Normal University say that the signals were identified earlier this year on the countryโ€™s giant โ€œSky Eyeโ€ telescope, and have called the signals โ€œsuspicious.โ€

 

On Tuesday, the Chinese state media outlet Science and Technology Daily reported that researchers were looking into a number of โ€œpossible technological tracesโ€ from intelligent civilizations elsewhere in the cosmos, reported Newsweek.

 

Zhang Tonjie, chief scientist of an extraterrestrial civilization search team co-founded by Beijing Normal University, the National Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the University of California, Berkeley, said the narrow-band electromagnetic signals differ from previously captured signals.

 

The suspicious signals, however, could be the result of radio interference. Zhang said that further investigation is required.

 

Mysteriously, the report was removed from the state-backed website with no explanation why. However, the news has been picked up by several media outlets, including state-run Chinese news sites, reported Bloomberg.

 

The Sky Eye telescopeโ€™s official name is Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) and it is the largest single-dish radio telescope in the world, with a diameter of 500 metres (equivalent to 30 football fields, as the telescopeโ€™s website states.)

 

One of its listed scientific goals is to search for extraterrestrial life.

 

Zhangโ€™s extraterrestrial search team has encountered suspicious signals before, in fact. Two sets of unusual signals were found in 2020 while the team was processing data from 2019. Another strange signal was identified in 2022 when the team was observing exoplanets, Bloomberg reported.

 

One of the most famous examples in history of an unidentified signal from space was the mysterious Wow! signal, which was found by Ohio State Universityโ€™s Big Ear telescope in 1977.

 

An incredibly strong signal came through for more than a minute, prompting Jerry Ehman, a scientist working with the telescope, to circle where the signal appeared on the data print-out with a red pen and wrote โ€œWow!โ€ next to it.

 

The source of the signal is still unknown and has been used to argue for the existence of alien life.

France has not received any natural gas from Russia via pipeline since June 15, network operator GRTgaz said Friday, after Russian energy giant Gazprom warned this week it would sharply cut deliveries to Europe.

 

Gazprom said the supply reductions via the Nord Stream pipeline are the result of repair work, but EU officials believe Moscow is punishing allies of Ukraine, where Russian forces launched an invasion in February.

 

France gets around 17 percent of its gas from Russia through network connections with Germany, which relies heavily on Russian supplies and has criticised Gazpromโ€™s move as โ€œpoliticalโ€.

 

Supplies had already been reduced by 60 percent since the beginning of this year, sending prices soaring.

 

But GRTgaz said there was no risk to French supplies currently, with reserves at 56 percent capacity compared with 50 percent in June normally.

 

Since Russiaโ€™s invasion of Ukraine, France and other countries have increased gas imports from Spain via pipeline while also stepping up purchases of liquefied natural gas (LNG) that arrives by ship.

 

Much of the LNG is still coming from Russia, with France one of the countryโ€™s largest buyers currently, according to a report this week from the Finland-based Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air.

Q ive been dealing with awful tinnitus since jan 2021. Its not the vax that caused it as im pureblood. Any idea what it could be?
