5 lessons from the NATO summit

Wow, Q. The spin in this politico article from yesterday about the NATO summit speaks to me. You and the team have been hitting them harder than I ever imagined. This is what winning looks like. Stoltenberg announced at the kickoff the “biggest overhaul of our collective defense and deterrence since the Cold War.” And then he and his staffers spent the rest of the event clarifying what he meant after several alliance members shrugged their shoulders when asked what the chief was talking about? Wow, Q. Just wow. The alliance’s vaunted NATO Reaction Force, a 40,000-strong unit that can deploy within 30 days, is bound for the dustbin of history? Their plan to have 500,000 troops ready within 180 days can’t be completely implemented until possibly 2028? The leadership in Brussels is still worried about the arms control agreements the U.S. walked away from under the Trump administration? The erosion of the arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation architecture has negatively impacted strategic stability? The Russian Federation’s selective implementation of its arms control obligations and commitments have contributed to the deterioration of the broader security landscape? And China is coming with a second punch? What you have done to them is absolutely stunning. Thank you, Donald Trump, and thank you, Q. God has blessed us. Have a happy Fourth.
