I have a thinker statue stalking my family. I broke it in 1983 and threw it away, hoping not to get caught. My uncle 3,000 miles away has it glued back together. My mom flipped when she saw it. Iowa Supreme Court Issues Ruling on Abortion Waiting Period Law

 

A highly anticipated abortion ruling came down on Friday from the Iowa Supreme Court, which involves a law requiring women to wait 24 hours before getting an abortion.

 

The Iowa Supreme Court has overruled a 2018 decision and held that abortion is not protected by the state’s constitution.

 

“In a fractured decision that reverses a lower court’s decision to block a 24-hour waiting period before an abortion, the court said the previous ruling that established a constitutional right to an abortion insufficiently recognizes that future human lives are at stake,” USA Today reported.

 

“The ruling sends a case challenging a 2020 law that put in place a 24-hour waiting period for an abortion back to a lower court to reevaluate. It also suggested that a decision from the U.S. Supreme Court, which is expected soon, would further decide the landscape of abortion in Iowa and across the U.S.,” the report added.

 

“Although we overrule (the 2018 decision), and thus reject the proposition that there is a fundamental right to an abortion in Iowa’s Constitution subjecting abortion regulation to strict scrutiny, we do not at this time decide what constitutional standard should replace it,” wrote Justice Edward Mansfield, who penned the majority opinion.

 

Iowa GOP Gov. Kim Reynolds celebrated the Iowa Supreme Court decision in a statement.

 

“Today’s ruling is a significant victory in our fight to protect the unborn. The Iowa Supreme Court reversed its earlier 2018 decision, which made Iowa the most abortion-friendly state in the country,” Reynolds said. “Every life is sacred and should be protected, and as long as I’m governor that is exactly what I will do.”

 

With the Iowa constitutional right removed, and if the Roe precedent is overturned, Iowa lawmakers would have significantly more freedom to pass and enforce restrictive abortion laws.

 

House Speaker Pat Grassley, R-New Hartford, said the decision “is a positive step in our fight to protect the unborn.”

 

Democrats decried the ruling, with House Minority Leader Jennifer Konfrst calling it a “step backward for Iowa families.”

 

“Iowans should always have the final say in making their own healthcare decisions, including abortion, without interference from politicians,” Konfrst said in a statement.

 

The ruling out of Iowa comes as the U.S. Supreme Court will soon deliver the official ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the highly anticipated abortion case that could overrule Roe v. Wade.

 

A draft majority opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito was leaked to Politico in early May and it set off a firestorm on social media.

 

“Roe was egregiously wrong from the start,” Alito writes.

 

“We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled,” he writes in the document. “It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives.”

 

“We, therefore, hold the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion. Roe and Casey must be overruled, and the authority to regulate abortion must be returned to the people and their elected representatives,” Alito writes in the document, labeled the “Opinion of the Court.”

 

Soon after Alito’s draft majority opinion leaked, it’s assumed there were at least 5 votes in favor of overturning Roe v Wade, leaving state legislators to weigh their own abortion policies.

 

However, the investigation has not identified any suspects and the court’s integrity is growing weaker by the day, according to NPR.

 

One source told the outlet that “the place sounds like it’s imploding.”

 

Another said, “I don’t know how on earth the court is going to finish up its work this term.”

 

The nation’s highest court has taken a slew of actions since the leak, including requiring law clerks to provide cell phone records and sign affidavits, according to CNN.

 

A draft majority opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito was leaked to Politico earlier this month and it set off a firestorm on social media.

 

“Some clerks are apparently so alarmed over the moves, particularly the sudden requests for private cell data, that they have begun exploring whether to hire outside counsel. The court’s moves are unprecedented and the most striking development to date in the investigation into who might have provided Politico with the draft opinion it published on May 2,” CNN reported.

 

“The probe has intensified the already high tensions at the Supreme Court, where the conservative majority is poised to roll back a half-century of abortion rights and privacy protections. Chief Justice John Roberts met with law clerks as a group after the breach, CNN has learned, but it is not known whether any systematic individual interviews have occurred,” the report added.

The minister of digital transformation suggests a chatbot can be used to disclose those suspected of aiding enemy forces and spreading Russian propaganda

 

Ukrainians have been urged to use a Telegram chatbot to report people they suspect of aiding Russian forces and spreading Kremlin propaganda.

 

Ukrainian Minister of Digital Transformation Mikhail Fedorov wrote on Facebook on Thursday that the eVorog (Enemy) chatbot has already received over 700 messages such as “he went over to the side of the occupiers, helps the Russian military, repairs enemy equipment and supports the actions of the occupiers in robbing houses.”

 

“If you know that someone from your village or town is collaborating with the occupiers, is spreading Russian propaganda, report them to the Enemy chatbot,” wrote Fedorov, adding that all submissions are received, checked and sent over to Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU).

 

He also urged citizens to keep their own safety in mind, asking them to “videotape the collaborators in secret” and delete photos and correspondence with the enemy. Fedorov stated that if there is no opportunity to take photos, then people can simply send the information in plain text.

 

One of the comments under Fedorov’s post urged the minister to pay special attention to validating the messages received by the chatbot, warning that, given the internal strife in the country, it could lead to a lot of innocent people being accused.

 

The eVorog chatbot was launched back in March and Ukrainians were initially instructed to use it to report sightings of Russian equipment or forces and send exact geo-location data of enemy positions along with photos and videos, which would be later shared with the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker (D) on Monday immediately called for gun control following a mass shooting at a July 4 parade in Highland Park.

 

Highland Park police gave an update on the rooftop sniper attack on the northern Illinois Chicago suburb’s Fourth of July parade Monday:

 

Six people are dead and twenty-four “seriously injured” were taken to the hospital.

The suspect is at large.

The suspect is described as a white male, 18-20 years old with long black hair, small build wearing a white or blue t-shirt

Police also said it appears the gunman was firing from a rooftop, could not confirm he had more than one weapon but should be considered armed.

 

Illinois Governor Pritzker condemned gun violence after he asked for prayers for the families devastated by the mass shooting.

 

“But grief will not bring the victims back, and prayers alone will not put a stop to the terror or rampant gun violence in our country,” Pritzker said.

Gavin reported the issue to the Board of Elections and a representative said they would “correct it immediately.”

 

Candice Giove, a Republican strategist, said she had a similar experience at her polling site in Bushwick, Brooklyn around 11 a.m.

 

“I was handed a Democratic ballot and I realized when I opened the folder and I saw Kathy Hochul’s name,” Giove told The Post.

 

“I went back and told the poll worker ‘I’m not a Democrat, I’m a Republican’ and he said to me, ‘we don’t have any Republican ballots.'”

 

Giove said poll workers then started digging through the cabinets and found a pack of Republican ballots that were “shrink wrapped and under a bunch” of other items and at that point she was able to cast her vote.

 

While Republican voters can be a rare sight in New York City’s blue streets, Gavin and Giove are concerned other GOP supporters at their polling locations weren’t able to cast their ballots and could’ve voted for Democrats instead, which is against election rules.

 

“It seemed like they were just giving out Democrat ballots. People might not have known and assumed their only choice was to vote Democrat. People likely voted on the Democrat ballot because they weren’t given any other choice, which is why I was so incensed,” said Gavin.

 

“I was disenfranchised. I couldn’t believe it.”

 

Giove called the incident “deeply concerning.”

 

“I could’ve just filled out a Democratic ballot and voted and no one would’ve known the difference,” she said.

 

“What if I wanted to vote who I thought would be the easiest to defeat?”

 

Gavin later returned to the polling location around noon where election workers apologized for the issue and helped him successfully cast his vote for Astorino.

 

Vincent Ignizio, the Deputy Executive Director of the city Board of Elections, didn’t dispute Gavin’s account when asked by The Post for comment and instead, shifted blame to the polling location.

 

“Our 1,200-plus polling sites citywide are aware that we have both Republican and Democratic statewide primaries today, and the ballots for each to distribute. We have reiterated this to our borough offices to ensure all voters receive the appropriate ballots,” Ignizio said.

 

When Giove reported her issue on Twitter, a rep tweeted back to her that they would investigate what happened.

 

Gavin, who voted for Mayor Eric Adams during the mayoral election, called the snafu unacceptable and said he would’ve been just as angry if he found out there were no Democratic ballots available at the location.

 

“I gave Curtis Sliwa $500 but I voted for Eric Adams. When I was a Nassau County resident, I voted for Tom Suozzi,” said Gavin.

 

“I will cross party lines. I believe choice is the most important thing we have. My choice was limited to Democrat candidates.”

Kellogg Co. is breaking up

 

The Kellogg Co.’s board of directors have approved a plan to break the company up into three independent businesses — global snacking, North American cereal and plant-based foods. The proposed breakup is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023, according to the company.

 

“Kellogg has been on a successful journey of transformation to enhance performance and increase long-term shareowner value,” said Steve Cahillane, chairman and chief executive officer. “This has included re-shaping our portfolio, and today’s announcement is the next step in that transformation.

 

“These businesses all have significant standalone potential, and an enhanced focus will enable them to better direct their resources toward their distinct strategic priorities. In turn, each business is expected to create more value for all stakeholders, and each is well positioned to build a new era of innovation and growth.”

 

The global snacking business will have approximately $11.4 billion in sales and include Kellogg’s snacks, international cereal, noodles and North American frozen breakfast products. The business will split its headquarters between Battle Creek, Mich., and Chicago.

 

Nearly 60% of its net sales will come from global snacks, including such brands as Pringles, Cheez-It, Pop-Tarts, Kellogg’s Rice Krispies Treats, Nutri-Grain, and RXBAR, among others. Less than a quarter of its net sales will come from cereal in international markets and such brands as Kellogg's, Frosties, Zucaritas, Special K, Tresor, Krave, Coco-Pops and Crunchy Nut.

 

About 10% of its net sales come from noodles in Africa and the remainder will come from frozen breakfast and the Eggo brand.

 

North American cereal will have about $2.4 billion sales and include cereal brands in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. The cereal businesses portfolio will include Kellogg’s, Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops, Mini-Wheats, Special K, Raisin Bran, Rice Krispies, Corn Flakes, Kashi and Bear Naked.

 

The plant-based foods business will include Kellogg’s MorningStar Farms brand and have approximately $340 million in sales.

 

Management teams to lead both the North American cereal and plant-based foods businesses will be announced at a later date, according to the company. Both initially will have their headquarters in Battle Creek.

 

Kellogg Co. said breaking the business up into three independent companies will allow them to focus on specific strategic priorities, executive with agility and operational flexibility and shape distinctive corporate cultures.

 

The spin-offs are intended to result in tax-free distributions of North American cereal and plant-based foods shares to Kellogg Co. shareowners. Shareholders would receive shares in the two spin-off entities on a pro-rata basis relative to their Kellogg holdings at the date for each spin-off, according to the company.

Rep. Mary Miller (R-Ill.) is sounding the alarm about fentanyl coming across the Southern Border by calling the crisis a "terrorist chemical attack" created by Biden administration policies.

 

Her comments come as a Customs and Border Protection agents encountered a record number of nearly 240,000 migrants in May at the Southern Border. Despite this, overall drug seizures are significantly down from previous years.

 

"The Biden administration has advertized and facilitated this invasion … Some of these countries are emptying their jails and prisons and sending them up here. The cartels have totally taken control of our border," Miller told the "Just the News, Not Noise" television program on Thursday.

 

"There is enough fentanyl coming over the border to kill every American multiple times over. In fact, I would say that we're under a terrorist chemical attack. Over 100,000 of our youth died last year from drug overdoses," she said. "And for us, Illinois is a sanctuary state, thanks to the Democrats that are in control, and we basically roll out the red carpet for the people that are coming here illegally. And people, the regular citizens of Illinois, have had it."

 

More than 105,000 people are estimated to have died from drug overdoses in 2021, according to provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This is up from the roughly 93,000 overdose deaths in 2020. More than 70,000 people died from fentanyl alone in 2021, an increase of more than 20% from the previous year.

 

Miller is running against fellow incumbent Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) after Democrat-led redistricting in the state created two blue-leaning seats and took away two red-leaning seats, FiveThirtyEight reported.

 

Former President Donald Trump has voiced his support for Miller over Davis, who voted to certify the electoral college results in 2020.

 

With the Illinois primary scheduled for June 28, Trump plans on campaigning with Miller next Saturday in Mendon, Ill., near Quincy.

Abu Akleh, an American citizen, was killed during an Israeli raid in the Jenin refugee camp in mid-May. During the arrest operation, a firefight broke out between Israeli forces and Palestinian gunmen, and Abu Akleh was shot in the head, with Israeli and Palestinian officials trading blame.

 

For weeks, Israeli military officials said that they had identified a soldier’s gun that may have fired the shot that killed Abu Akleh, but said that confirmation would require ballistic analysis to match the gun to the bullet. But the Palestinian Authority refused to turn over the round or conduct a joint investigation with Israel. Ramallah’s own investigation found that Abu Akleh had been shot from behind by Israeli troops.

Chevron Hits Back, Says Biden Trying To "Impose Obstacles" To Energy Delivery

 

Chevron has hit back at the Biden administration, claiming that their policies since January 2021 have sent a message that it aims to "impose obstacles to our industry delivering energy resources the world needs," according to Bloomberg's Annmarie Hordern, citing a statement by the company.

 

Chevron says they plan to boost production in the Permian basin by more than 15% this year, while its overall upstream capital investments in the US have climbed 35% in the last year.

 

What's more, Chevron's US refineries are operational, and input grew to 915k b/d on average in Q1, vs 881k b/d the same quarter a year ago.

 

The statement comes after the Biden administration set out on a blame campaign - telling Americans that high prices at the pump are due to corporate greed by oil companies, and not his administration's haphazard energy policies. The new offensive included a letter to Big Oil execs threatening them with forced production quotas, windfall taxes, and/or price-caps.

 

The latest dust-up comes less than two weeks after Chevron CEO Mike Wirth told Bloomberg TV that there will "never be another refinery built in the US" thanks to the state of policies around the world towards fossil fuels.

An aide to Mark Meadow when he was Trump White House chief of staff will testify Tuesday before the Democrat-led House Jan. 6 committee.

A red health code - indicating a potential COVID-19 patient - means the carrier is barred access to all public places from public toilets to shops to train stations, and faced mandatory quarantine in centralized isolation centers.

 

They are among tens of thousands of bank depositors who have fought to recover their savings for more than two months. The crisis started in April when at least four lenders in Henan froze cash withdrawals, citing internal system upgrades. But customers said neither these banks nor officials have since offered any information on why or how long, prompting angry protests outside the office of the banking regulator in Zhengzhou in May.

 

An estimated 1 million customers were reportedly affected, which has left many residents’ life savings at stake and patients unable to pay for regular medical care.

 

Depositors have been cut off for at least 39.7 billion yuan ($5.91 billion), according to Sanlian LifeWeek, a state-run magazine.

 

Aggrieved depositors across the country planned another protest in Zhengzhou on June 13 to demand an answer, though previous gatherings were met with silence from local authorities and violence from plain-clothes police.

Supreme Court Issues Ruling, Gutting Miranda Rights And Threatening The Fifth Amendment

 

On Thursday, the Supreme Court issued a ruling in Vega V Tekoh, a case involving the administration of Miranda rights, with the court ruling that a suspect’s words or statements can be used in court regardless of their Miranda rights.

 

For background, these are the facts of the case in question:

 

Terence Tekoh worked as a patient transporter in a hospital in Los Angeles. After a patient accused him of sexual assault, hospital staff reported the allegation to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department. Deputy Carlos Vega went to the hospital to ask Tekoh questions and take Tekoh’s statement. Although the parties described vastly different accounts of the nature of the interaction between Tekoh and Vega, it is undisputed that Vega did not advise Tekoh of his Miranda rights before questioning him or taking his statement.

 

Tekoh was arrested and charged in California state court, but a jury returned a verdict of not guilty. Following the acquittal on the criminal charge, Tekoh sued Vega, alleging that Vega violated Tekoh’s Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination by taking his statement without first advising him of his Miranda rights.

 

Justice Samuel Alito issued his ruling, a count of 6-3, deciding that using such statements outside of Miranda rights is not a violation of a defendant’s rights and does not give them the right to sue the court for such use.

 

Miranda prescribed a specific and protective set of warnings to ensure that criminally accused suspects were made aware of the Fifth Amendment’s decree that no person “shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself.”

 

Miranda is also one of the court’s most culturally famous decisions. Americans know Miranda. More accurately: Americans know their Miranda warnings. Even if they cannot recite the lyrics to the national anthem or the Pledge of Allegiance, they likely can recite Miranda’s warnings:

 

You have the right to remain silent;

Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law;

You have the right to a lawyer;

If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be appointed for you.

 

Generally, if the police obtain a suspect’s statement violating Miranda, the government cannot use that statement against the defendant in court.

 

But can the defendant later sue the police for violating the defendant’s constitutional rights?

 

The Supreme Court now says, No.

The swastika is a power symbol; the power can be used for good or evil purposes, like fire; can cook a meal with it, or burn a house down.

Anon had a coworker from India, who drew the "ZZ" symbol on the hood of her car for good luck. Anon asked her about it back before anon knew the difference; she informed me that it was an ancient power symbol, and also that it was not the one the Nazis used.

Haven't really looked further than that so "hearsay", if I was to use it in a courtroom… :)

Also, in this case, it could easily be explained by "illiterate graffiti artist"…
