RUMOR vs. REALITY: Are the claims made about the 2020 election in the movie “2000 Mules” true?

 

The “2000 Mules” movie aims to cast doubt on the integrity of the 2020 election by claiming that there was a wide-spread conspiracy to use “mules” or “ballot harvesters” to influence the election’s outcome.

 

The movie’s claims are false and have been debunked by numerous sources.

 

The 2020 election was the “most secure in history,” according to election officials across the country. No evidence of widespread voter fraud was ever proven in any state, though Politifact notes “[w]hile authorities identified isolated cases of voter fraud, these instances were in such small numbers it would not have changed the election’s outcome.”

 

The movie uses flawed assumptions and faulty data to try to prove its point about the 2020 election.

 

The Associated Press did a thorough fact check of the misinformation in “2000 Mules” that can be accessed here, but we have also copied some of the main points below.

 

CLAIM: At least 2,000 “mules” were paid to illegally collect ballots and deliver them to drop boxes in key swing states ahead of the 2020 presidential election.

 

THE FACTS: True the Vote didn’t prove this. The finding is based on false assumptions about the precision of cellphone tracking data and the reasons that someone might drop off multiple ballots, according to experts.

 

“Ballot harvesting” is a pejorative term for dropping off completed ballots for people besides yourself. The practice is legal in several states but largely illegal in the states True the Vote focused on, with some exceptions for family, household members and people with disabilities. […]

 

The group’s claims of a paid ballot harvesting scheme are supported in the film only by one unidentified whistleblower said to be from San Luis, Arizona, who said she saw people picking up what she “assumed” to be payments for ballot collection. The film contains no evidence of such payments in other states in 2020.

 

Plus, experts say cellphone location data, even at its most advanced, can only reliably track a smartphone within a few meters — not close enough to know whether someone actually dropped off a ballot or just walked or drove nearby. […]

 

What’s more, ballot drop boxes are often intentionally placed in busy areas, such as college campuses, libraries, government buildings and apartment complexes — increasing the likelihood that innocent citizens got caught in the group’s dragnet, Striegel said.

 

Similarly, there are plenty of legitimate reasons why someone might be visiting both a nonprofit’s office and one of those busy areas. Delivery drivers, postal workers, cab drivers, poll workers and elected officials all have legitimate reasons to cross paths with numerous drop boxes or nonprofits in a given day. […]

 

In some states, in an attempt to bolster its claims, True the Vote also highlighted drop box surveillance footage that showed voters depositing multiple ballots into the boxes. However, there was no way to tell whether those voters were the same people as the ones whose cellphones were anonymously tracked.

 

A video of a voter dropping off a stack of ballots at a drop box is not itself proof of any wrongdoing, since most states have legal exceptions that let people drop off ballots on behalf of family members and household members.

 

For example, Larry Campbell, a voter in Michigan who was not featured in the film, told The Associated Press he legally dropped off six ballots in a local drop box in 2020 — one for himself, his wife, and his four adult children. And in Georgia, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger’s office investigated one of the surveillance videos circulated by True the Vote and said it found the man was dropping off ballots for himself and his family.

 

CLAIM: In Philadelphia alone, True the Vote identified 1,155 “mules” who illegally collected and dropped off ballots for money.

 

THE FACTS: No, it didn’t. The group hasn’t offered any evidence of any sort of paid ballot harvesting scheme in Philadelphia. And True the Vote did not get surveillance footage of drop boxes in Philadelphia, so the group based this claim solely on cellphone location data, its researcher Gregg Phillips said in March in testimony to Pennsylvania state senators.

 

CLAIM: If it weren’t for this ballot collection scheme, former President Donald Trump would have had enough votes to win the 2020 election.

Declassified Doc Shows UK Knew In Real-Time It Was Helping Terror Groups In Overthrowing Gaddafi

 

Britain’s military knew that fighters from an Al Qaeda-linked terrorist organisation were benefiting from the overthrow of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, but continued to support NATO airstrikes in Libya for another two months.

 

The revelation raises serious questions about British foreign policy and whether the U.K.’s then Prime Minister David Cameron misled Parliament.

 

In early September 2011, Cameron updated the House of Commons about the situation in Libya, telling MPs:

 

“This revolution was not about extreme Islamism; Al-Qaeda played no part in it.”

 

However, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) had assessed the month before that: “The 17 February Brigade is likely to be an enduring player in [the] transition” away from Gaddafi’s regime and had “political linkages” to Libya’s rebel leadership, the National Transitional Council.

 

The 17 February Brigade, also known as the 17 February Martyrs Brigade, was a hardline Islamist militia named after the date the uprising began against Gaddafi. Its ranks included Salman Abedi, who went on to murder 22 innocent people in the Manchester Arena terrorist attack in 2017.

The MOD assessment said, “Many 17th February Brigade fighters have affiliations with the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamist groups, such as the Libyan Islamic Movement for Change (formerly LIFG).”

 

The LIFG, or Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, was banned by Britain in 2005 as a terrorist organization over its links to Al Qaeda. Its supporters included the Manchester bomber’s father, Ramadan Abedi. The organization rebranded to the Libyan Islamic Movement for Change during the 2011 war.

 

Although the LIFG’s leadership renounced ties to Al Qaeda as part of a prisoner release deal it made with Gaddafi shortly before the 2011 uprising, many of its members continued to hold violent Islamist views. It was not until 2019 that the ban was lifted on the LIFG in the U.K.

 

Misleading Parliament?

 

The MOD has only released a portion of its assessment to Declassified following a freedom of information request. It is not clear whether the intelligence was shared at the time with ministers.

 

Dr. Liam Fox, who was defence secretary during the war, told Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee in 2016: “I do not recall reading any reports that set out the background of any Islamist activity to specific rebel groups.”

 

Fox was responding to a question from the committee about whether he was aware that members of the LIFG were participating in the rebellion.

 

Lord William Hague, who was foreign secretary, told the committee: “Libyan leaders themselves did not have a deeper understanding of what was happening in their own country” and so “it is probably wrong to expect somebody sitting in the backrooms of the Foreign Office or Vauxhall Cross [MI6 headquarters] to know better than they did.”

New Mexico governor requests delay of DHS plan to send more migrants to Albuquerque

 

SANTA FE, N.M. — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham sent a letter to U.S. Department of Homeland Security Sec. Alejando Mayorkas Tuesday, requesting the federal government delay planned or expanded efforts to transport migrants to New Mexico. She said the plan would dramatically affect the state’s capacity to provide ongoing humanitarian assistance to wildfire relief efforts.

 

The governor met with Mayorkas last month, where she requested additional wildfire disaster assistance from the federal government through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The governor’s request was recently granted by President Joe Biden, who announced that the federal government will cover 100% of costs for emergency protective work and debris removal under New Mexico’s existing wildfire disaster declaration.

 

“The existing emergency arising from these wildfires has severely taxed the capacity of our state to provide resources to non-New Mexicans. I cannot allow the governments and communities of the state of New Mexico to shoulder additional burdens falling squarely within the federal government’s purview,” the governor wrote.

“Correct! If you got pregnant and had an abortion, we could use those embryonic cells and have a life’s supply for all of us: you, your mother and me. A lot of people are doing it,” he replied.

 

According to the book excerpts published in the New York Post, Medeiros says she “was beyond stunned.”

 

“This was the sickest thing I’d ever heard Peter say,” she said.

 

“I couldn’t speak for a moment. Finally, catching my breath, I said, ‘Peter, I do not believe in abortion.’”

 

Nygard would host what he called "Pamper Parties" - often at his private island resort Nygard Cay in the Caribbean.

 

He would allegedly choose out girls for sex and then either force himself upon them, drug them or offer them cash.

RT’s journalists were able to swiftly agree the purchase of a US-made Phoenix Ghost kamikaze drone

 

The lavish deliveries of ‘lethal aid’ from the US, UK and other NATO countries to Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia have led to marketplaces where some of those weapons can be purchased popping up on the dark web, RT Russian has learned.

 

The Ukrainian traders claim to offer not just small arms or body armor there, but also such sophisticated hardware as Javelin and NLAW anti-tank systems or Phoenix Ghost and Switchblade explosive drones.

 

That said, it’s not possible to completely rule out that the sellers actually did not have the said weapons in stock, as the RT investigators did not complete the purchase. Scamming schemes are common for dark web marketplaces.

 

RT was able to contact one of the said sellers through a marketplace on the darknet and agree the purchase, for a price of $4,000, of a Phoenix Ghost loitering munition, which had been developed by the US especially for the needs of the Ukrainian military.

 

As for the drone, the trader assured that it’ll be placed into a stash, with its coordinates and the photo of the spot to be shared after the payment is made through the marketplace, acting a guarantor of the deal. The parcel is going to be dug into the ground in the woods, he said.

 

When asked if the Phoenix Ghost could be delivered to an area outside Ukraine, specifically the Polish border town of Przemysl, he replied this won’t be a problem, but would cost an extra $1,000.

 

This potentially suggests that the Ukrainian arms smugglers may have already established contacts with border guards and are able to cross in and out of Poland without complications.

 

RT has also exchanged messages with another trader, nicknamed ‘weapons ukraine,’ who was looking to sell batches of US-made body armor at the price of $ 1,500 for five units, and M4 rifles with a silencer and a hundred bullets for $2,4000 thousand per set.

Over the past few years, data brokers and federal military, intelligence, and law enforcement agencies have formed a vast, secretive partnership to surveil the movements of millions of people. Many of the mobile apps on our cell phones track our movements with great precision and frequency. Data brokers harvest our location data from the app developers, and then sell it to these agencies. Once in government hands, the data is used by the military to spy on people overseas, by ICE to monitor people in and around the U.S., and by criminal investigators like the FBI and Secret Service. This post will draw on recent research and reporting to explain how this surveillance partnership works, why is it alarming, and what can we do about it.

WHERE DOES THE DATA COME FROM?

Weather apps, navigation apps, coupon apps, and “family safety” apps often request location access in order to enable key features. But once an app has location access, it typically has free rein to share that access with just about anyone.

 

That’s where the location data broker industry comes in. Data brokers entice app developers with cash-for-data deals, often paying per user for direct access to their device. Developers can add bits of code called “software development kits,” or SDKs, from location brokers into their apps. Once installed, a broker’s SDK is able to gather data whenever the app itself has access to it: sometimes, that means access to location data whenever the app is open. In other cases, it means “background” access to data whenever the phone is on, even if the app is closed.

 

One app developer received the following marketing email from data broker Safegraph:

 

SafeGraph can monetize between $1-$4 per user per year on exhaust data (across location, matches, segments, and other strategies) for US mobile users who have strong data records. We already partner with several GPS apps with great success, so I would definitely like to explore if a data partnership indeed makes sense.

 

But brokers are not limited to data from apps they partner with directly. The ad tech ecosystem provides ample opportunities for interested parties to skim from the torrents of personal information that are broadcast during advertising auctions. In a nutshell, advertising monetization companies (like Google) partner with apps to serve ads. As part of the process, they collect data about users—including location, if available—and share that data with hundreds of different companies representing digital advertisers. Each of these companies uses that data to decide what ad space to bid on, which is a nasty enough practice on its own. But since these “bidstream” data flows are largely unregulated, the companies are also free to collect the data as it rushes past and store it for later use.

 

The data brokers covered in this post add another layer of misdirection to the mix. Some of them may gather data from apps or advertising exchanges directly, but others acquire data exclusively from other data brokers. For example, Babel Street reportedly purchases all of its data from Venntel. Venntel, in turn, acquires much of its data from its parent company, the marketing-oriented data broker Gravy Analytics. And Gravy Analytics has purchased access to data from the brokers Complementics, Predicio, and Mobilewalla. We have little information about where those companies get their data—but some of it may be coming from any of the dozens of other companies in the business of buying and selling location data.

 

If you’re looking for an answer to “which apps are sharing data?”, the answer is: “It’s almost impossible to know.” Reporting, technical analysis, and right-to-know requests through laws like GDPR have revealed relationships between a handful of apps and location data brokers. For example, we know that the apps Muslim Pro and Muslim Mingle sold data to X-Mode, and that navigation app developer Sygic sent data to Predicio (which sold it to Gravy Analytics and Venntel). However, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Each of the location brokers discussed in this post obtains data from hundreds or thousands of different sources. Venntel alone has claimed to gather data from “over 80,000” different apps. Because much of its data comes from other brokers, most of these apps likely have no direct relationship with Venntel. As a result, the developers of the apps fueling this industry likely have no idea where their users’ data ends up. Users, in turn, have little hope of understanding whether and how their data arrives in these data brokers’ hands.

The Merry Pranksters and LSD

 

Second, and more intriguing, was The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, Tom Wolfe's nonfiction book published in 1968. In the book, Wolfe follows Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters as they travel the country in their party bus, encouraging non-drug users to try LSD in an Acid Test

– including a formulation of LSD in Kool-Aid, dubbed "Electric Kool-Aid." The book includes possibly the first negative instance of the phrase "drink the Kool-Aid," and it came a decade before the deaths at Jonestown. Wolfe's book includes this passage, describing a man who had a bad trip (emphasis added):

"… There was one man who became completely withdrawn … I want to say catatonic, because we tried to bring him out of it, and could not make contact at all … he was sort of a friend of mine, and I had some responsibility for getting him back to town … he had a previous history of mental hospitals, lack of contact with reality, etc., and when I realized what had happened, I begged him not to drink the Kool-Aid, but he did … and it was very bad."

 

Because of The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, many Americans were familiar with the idea of being urged to drink Kool-Aid containing, um, unusual chemicals

– even if they hadn't themselves participated in an Acid Test. This familiarity perversely boosted the profile of Kool-Aid, especially in this particular (adulterated) circumstance.

 

Both beverages were there

 

Third, plenty of evidence suggests that both Kool-Aid and Flavor Aid were present at Jonestown

– though there was more of the latter. Therefore, in a sense, everybody's right. It may simply come down to whether the term "Kool-Aid" is catchier than "Flavor Aid," and history decided

– much to the consternation of Kool-Aid's marketing department.

 

Today, the phrase "drink the Kool-Aid" is firmly entrenched in popular language, although the evidence suggests that it should more realistically be either "drink the Flavor Aid/Kool Aid mix" or the even less-catchy suggestion by Al Tompkins of Poynter: "[drink the] grape-flavored drink mix laced with poison." I think this linguistic horse has left the barn, quenching our thirst for metaphors with it. "OH YEAH!"

… References [to "drinking the Kool-Aid"] are not uniformly negative. On the contrary, they describe the positive qualities of corporate loyalty or team spirit. For example, when Michael Jordan, a former Chicago Bulls basketball player who now plays for a competing team, returned to his former home to attend a Chicago Bears football game, he was willing to drink "Bears' Kool-Aid." This meant that Jordan was willing to set aside basketball rivalries in support of the home team at a football game.

 

Moore's paper is just one part of the encyclopedic Jonestown Institute website.

 

It's also worth checking out this Chicago Tribune story rounding up various media mentions of Kool-Aid versus Flavor Aid, 30 years after the Jonestown massacre. More people are avoiding the news, and trusting it less, report says

 

A growing number of people are selectively avoiding important news stories such as the coronavirus pandemic, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and the cost-of-living crisis, according to a report released on Tuesday.

 

While the majority of people surveyed consume news regularly, 38% said they often or sometimes avoid the news – up from 29% in 2017 – the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism said in its annual Digital News Report. Around 36% – particularly those under 35 – say that the news lowers their mood.

 

Trust in news is also declining, and is lowest in the United States. On average, 42% of people said they trust most news most of the time; that figure has fallen in almost half the countries in the report and risen in seven.

 

"Large numbers of people see the media as subject to undue political influence, and only a small minority believe most news organisations put what's best for society ahead of their own commercial interest," wrote Reuters Institute Director Rasmus Kleis Nielsen in the report, which is based on an online survey of 93,432 people, conducted in 46 markets.

 

Younger audiences are increasingly accessing the news via platforms such as TikTok, and have a weaker connection to news brands, the report found.

 

Each week 78% of 18- to 24-year-olds access news via aggregators, search engines and social media. Forty percent of that age group uses TikTok each week, with 15% saying they use it to find, discuss or share news.

 

The growth in the number of people who pay for online news may be leveling off, with a large proportion of digital subscriptions going to a few national brands. Across 20 countries where payment for news is widespread, 17% of survey respondents paid for any online news, the same figure as last year. Payment for local news varies across markets.

US aims to boost 'Israel', Arab states military co-op against Iran

 

The Department of State in Washington, DC, would join efforts with the Israeli occupation and several Arab states to bolster their aerial military capacities, which would offer them "protection" against Iran. The collaboration was part of proposed bipartisan legislation that will be introduced in Congress on Thursday.

 

This constitutes a new attempt by the US to strengthen its allies in West Asia following the signing of several normalization agreements between Arab states and the Israeli occupation.

 

Congressional aides have stressed that this proposal would prompt them to cooperate closely within the region.

 

The military aid would be provided to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the rest of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), as well as Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, and the Israeli occupation. The draft legislation said the parties to the agreement would be provided with a wide array of arms and equipment that would "protect" them "from cruise and ballistic missiles, manned and unmanned aerial systems, and rocket attacks from Iran, and for other purposes."

 

Egypt and Jordan had normalized ties with "Tel Aviv" in 1980 and 1994, respectively, while Bahrain and the UAE joined the negotiations table with the occupation decades later in 2020 under the auspices of the United States. Iraq and the rest of the GCC, on the other hand, did not join the flock of normalizers yet.

 

Congress has long been championing security cooperation between Arab states and the Israeli occupation, especially after the latest round of normalization in 2020. This comes as "Tel Aviv" and Riyadh are expanding cooperation in several areas, mainly in the trade sector.

 

Israeli media reported Wednesday that relations between "Israel" and Saudi Arabia, "the most important Arab state in the Gulf", were growing warmer, with a new agreement on the horizon that will bring about new flight paths from occupied Palestine and through Saudi airspace

 

Though Riyadh did not normalize ties with the Israeli occupation yet, unlike Abu Dhabi and Manama, it has already kicked off economic normalization with "Tel Aviv". The Kingdom is already issuing special visas to Israeli settlers, with Israeli and Saudi sources saying there has been a hike in signed deals recently and advanced contact concerning investments of Saudi businessmen and investment funds in "Israel".

 

Dozens of Israeli businessmen traveled to Saudi Arabia for trade deals in recent months, Israeli media reported in late May.

 

The bids for the Israeli occupation to collaborate closely with regional states are underway due to the parties' shared "concerns" about Iran, the Washington Post reported.

 

Greater cooperation between "Tel Aviv" and its regional allies is pushing US lawmakers to discuss ways their military could operate differently in West Asia, as per Jon Alterman, a senior vice president of the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

 

All of the names on the bill are either partners or allies of the United States, and though they all get the majority of their air defense systems from Washington, which also helps them figure out how to operate them, the US reportedly does not cooperate with the, and according to security experts, closer cooperation would provide all the members to the agreement with a better early warning system.

 

If the bill makes it through the House of Representatives and passes the Senate floor, the Arab states will see themselves sharing a radar with the Israeli occupation.

 

It is worth noting, however, that relations between the United States and Saudi Arabia have been souring lately, especially as Washington is asking the Gulf states to pump out more oil to "stabilize" the energy market tilted by the anti-Russian sanctions while the latter is declining its requests.

A video of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer telling Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh that he would "pay the price" for rolling back abortion rights has resurfaced amid an arrest outside the justice's home in Maryland.

 

Back in March 2020, Schumer made a speech outside the Supreme Court as justices heard a case about a Louisiana abortion law, warning Kavanaugh and Justice Neil Gorsuch—former President Donald Trump's other appointee at the time—that they could face dire consequences for their "awful decisions."

 

"I want to tell you, Gorsuch, I want to tell you, Kavanaugh, you have released the whirlwind and you will pay the price," Schumer, who was then minority leader, said at the time. "You won't know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions."

 

On Wednesday, GOP Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene, Vicky Hartzler and Mike Johnson quoted the Democratic leader after it was reported that an armed man was detained near Kavanaugh's home overnight.

The global economy is facing weak growth and high inflation, the report says

 

The World Bank (WB) has cut its global growth projection for this year from 4.1% to 2.9%, warning that many countries are likely to face recession.

 

“Amid the war in Ukraine, surging inflation, and rising interest rates, global economic growth is expected to slump in 2022,” the Tuesday press release said.

 

“Several years of above-average inflation and below-average growth are now likely, with potentially destabilizing consequences for low- and middle-income economies. It’s a phenomenon – stagflation – that the world has not seen since the 1970s.”

 

According to WB President David Malpass, “for many countries, recession will be hard to avoid.”

 

The institution said that after halving from 5.7% in 2021, growth would be stuck at 3% in both 2023 and 2024 as the Russia-Ukraine conflict affected investment and trade, the pent-up demand from the pandemic faded, and policy support was withdrawn.

 

The report highlighted that the slowdown in growth between 2021 and 2024 was on course to be twice that of the period between 1976 and 1979. The recovery from the stagflation of the 1970s required steep increases in interest rates in the West, it said. Those “played a prominent role in triggering a string of financial crises in emerging market and developing economies.”

 

According to the report, both rich and poor countries would be hit by the growth slowdown, but developing and emerging market economies are the most vulnerable. Growth in advanced economies was forecast to decline from 5.1% to 2.6% this year, while in emerging and developing countries it is expected to drop from 6.6% to 3.4%.

 

“Just over two years after Covid-19 caused the deepest global recession since World War II, the world economy is again in danger … Even if a global recession is averted, the pain of stagflation could persist for several years – unless major supply increases are set in motion,” said the report.

Alexey Arestovich, Ukrainian presidential aide, indicated, on Friday, that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have lost 10,000 personnel since the beginning of the Russian military operation in February, claiming at the same time that Kiev’s losses remain significantly lower than Moscow’s.

 

Without providing any evidence, the Ukrainian presidential aide revealed, in an interview with activist and YouTuber Mark Feygin, that at least 200 to 300 Russian soldiers die on a daily basis. During the interview, Arestovich claimed that “at the beginning of the conflict, 100 people [Ukrainians] died per day on average. But in the Russian army, 1,000 per day died in the first 20-30 days. Now 200-300 die, no less.” The Ukrainian official also stated that Friday was unusual for the Ukrainian Army as “600 people [died] in one day, no less.”

 

When asked by Feygin that if, based on the calculations, it is fair to assume that the total number of deaths added up to approximately 10,000 soldiers, the official responded with “yes, something like that.”

For the first time since the beginning of the special operation, the Ukrainian aide admitted to a cumulative number of deaths. On the other hand, the Russian Ministry of Defense reports on the Ukrainian Army’s losses are much higher – 23,367, as of April 18.

 

Moscow has not revealed total numbers on its end as of yet. However, earlier this month, Andrey Kartapolov, the head of the Russian Duma’s Defense Committee claimed that given the change in the military strategy, the Russian Army “practically ceased to lose people,” noting that the numbers and information regarding lost military personnel have been unchanged at 1,351 soldiers since last March.

 

Earlier in May, the Russian Ministry of Defense highlighted that in total, some 183 Ukrainian aircraft and 128 helicopters, 1,049 unmanned aerial vehicles, 325 anti-aircraft missile systems, 3,309 tanks and other armored combat vehicles, 447 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,722 field artillery and mortars, and 3,270 units of special military vehicles have been destroyed during the war in Ukraine.

 

It is noteworthy that on May 28, Russia's Defense Ministry said that Russian and DPR forces seized the strategic town of Krasny Liman in the Donetsk People's Republic, on the road to two key cities still under Kiev's control.

Even though every state already has something on the books regarding abortion, some predating Roe. Nothing really changes in the immediate after today's ruling. Japan and Russia have clinched a deal on Tokyo's fishing quota for salmon and trout spawned in Russian rivers, Japan's Fisheries Agency said Saturday, reaching an agreement on the issue despite Japan's economic sanctions against Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine.

 

The two countries agreed on a quota of 2,050 tons within Japan's exclusive economic zone for 2022, the same level as last year, and a payment to Russia of a "cooperation fee" of between 200 million yen ($1.5 million) and 300 million yen, depending on the actual catch. The lower end of the fee which Tokyo pays to Moscow since salmon and trout, according to the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea, belong to the country in which they were spawned was reduced by 60 million yen from last year due to a decline in catch in recent years.

 

The two governments will sign the document on Monday. With the agreement, Japanese fishermen are expected to start operating in the EEZ near Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost main island, in early May. On April 11, the two governments started negotiations for Japan's fishing quota for salmon and trout even though Tokyo has been stepping up sanctions against Moscow in an effort, along with the United States and European countries, to pressure Russia to stop the war in Ukraine.

 

In Hokkaido, the ban on net fishing for salmon and trout is normally lifted on April 10. But this year fishing has not been allowed as the ban remained in effect pending the outcome of negotiations. "This is part of Japan's cooperation in resource management undertaken by Russia," an agency official said. "I don't see any problem with it." In last year's talks, the two countries agreed on a payment to Russia of between 260 million yen and 300 million yen depending on the catch, with the actual fee being 260 million yen.

 

Japan's quota within Russia's EEZ, which is usually discussed along with that of within Japan's EEZ, remains undecided. The negotiations are part of many similar frameworks surrounding fishing between Tokyo and Moscow. The two countries discuss their quotas for fish resources such as saury and squid within each other's EEZs throughout the year.

BOSTON — Three more dancers have come forward to allege that a Las Vegas dance instructor and his ballerina wife sexually abused them.

 

The five dancers claim instructor Mitchell Taylor Button and his wife, former Boston Ballet principal dancer Dusty Button, “exploited their position of power and influence in the dance world to sexually abuse young dancers across the country.”

 

The Buttons, of Las Vegas, deny the allegations.

 

The suit claims the Buttons used their well-known positions in the dance community to sexually abuse young dancers across the country since as early as 2007. The alleged assaults came when the plaintiffs lived in Somerville, Mass., Bedford, N.H., and the Tampa, Fla. area.

 

The original suit was brought by two dancers and named only Mitchell Button.

 

An expanded federal lawsuit filed last week in Nevada adds three new plaintiffs and expressly names Dusty Button as a defendant.

 

The lawsuit also says Mitchell Button has used various names over the years, including “Taylor Button,” “Mitchell Moore,” and “Taylor Moore.”

 

Attorneys said Button used the name Taylor Moore while teaching dance to girls as young as ten years old at Centerstage Dance Academy in Tampa, Fla. around 2006. The lawsuit claims he sexually abused at least five of his students at that school, including at least one over the course of three years.

 

The lawsuit claims the Buttons worked together to groom young victims for abuse and were emotionally manipulative and controlling. Other claims stem from alleged incidents with young dancers in other cities, including one aspiring dancer who claims she was forced to drink alcohol and was raped while Dusty Button held a gun in her hand.

 

The alleged attacks continued into 2017 when Dusty Button was a principal ballerina with the Boston Ballet, according to the lawsuit.

To cut a long and tedious story short, the OPEC basket was trading at close to $119 per barrel Monday before the EU embargo agreement was announced. After the announcement, it rose to $120.

 

I don’t think we need to guess where OPEC oil prices are headed for the rest of the week or the next few months, really. In other words, proud and moral EU will be paying a lot more for the oil that, disgusting as it may be, it still needs.

 

But it’s not just refinery configurations that will limit the choice of EU buyers in crude grades. Availability will play a significant role as well and availability is, not to put too fine a point on it, quite tight.

 

In April, OPEC produced a quite impressive 2.7 million bpd of crude less than it was supposed to under its own output recovery quotas. In the current price environment this could, and does, mean two things: first, some members cannot produce more than they are already producing and second, other members have done what they could for oil prices and couldn’t do any more.

 

What’s left? U.S. oil, of course. The United States exported 4.341 million barrels of crude daily in the week to May 20, the latest week there’s detailed data for. This compared with 3.52 million bpd a week earlier, so there’s a solid increase.

 

The U.S. exported even more refined products, at 6.235 million bpd during that most recent week with detailed data. A lot of that, though not all, went to Europe. And a lot of it will probably continue to go to Europe. If refiners can cope, that is.

 

Reuters earlier this week published a report that should cause concern, and a lot of it. The report suggests that global refining capacity is lower than it needs to be in order to satisfy demand for oil products. And the U.S., specifically, has slipped into something fascinatingly called a structural deficit of refining capacity, for the first time in decades. That capacity is down by 1 million bpd since 2019, according to official data cited in the report.

 

As a result, of course, the operating refineries have had to increase their utilisation rates, especially with exports booming, with rates reaching over 92%. The fun part is that "We've been at this 93% utilization; generally, you can't sustain it for long periods of time," according to Valero Energy’s chief commercial officer Gary Simmons.
