McNerney Announces Tracy Solar Project Closer to Approval

Tracy, CA – Congressman Jerry McNerney today announced that the City of Tracy is one step closer to approval for using the property on Schulte Road for a renewable energy project. Legislative language submitted by Congressman McNerney earlier this year recently passed key committees in both the U.S. House and Senate and is on track for consideration by Congress.
“This is a significant step forward for the Tracy solar project,” said Rep. McNerney. “For more than a year now, I’ve pushed hard for Congress to consider and approve the solar project. We’re now one step closer. Using the Schulte Road property for clean energy development has great economic potential for a community that is hard hit by the tough economy. Investing in this type of job creation project is key to our area’s economic recovery. I’ll keep fighting for jobs in Tracy and the solar project as it moves onto the next part of the process.”
The City of Tracy is seeking to purchase the Schulte Road land for use as the site of a solar electricity-generation project. The 200-acre property was previously conveyed to the City of Tracy by Congress with the condition that 150 acres be used for recreational or educational purposes. The language submitted by Congressman McNerney, and supported by the City of Tracy, waives any remaining restrictions on the land’s use once it is purchased by the City. The City estimates that construction of the project will bring 200 jobs to San Joaquin County.

McNerney Introduces New Solar Technology Legislation

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-11) introduced the Solar Energy Deployment Act of 2012 to provide funding for state and local governments to install solar energy systems over rooftops and parking structures.
“Investing in clean energy at the state and local level will save money for all of California. In today’s economy, we need to do everything we can to be more efficient and cut costs,” said Rep. McNerney. “By making new solar grants available, we can meet our energy needs while putting less strain on our electrical grid.”
The Solar Energy Deployment Act, H.R. 4622, allows the U.S. Secretary of Energy to award competitive grants to state and local governments for installing solar equipment over rooftops and parking structures. Recipients of the funds could design and install solar energy systems over structures they own.
The secretary would have the authority to take into consideration several factors in deciding who would receive the grants, including:
Speed with which solar systems can be deployed
Total amount of solar energy deployed
The financial need of the state or local government
The use of best practices to ensure maximum efficiency of deployed systems
Whether or not the materials to be used are manufactured in the U.S. and whether their components are manufactured in the U.S.
“In order to meet our economic challenges, we have always relied on American ingenuity. Solar initiatives will save California in electrical costs and put people to work building the solar systems. Putting emphasis on American-manufactured products will create good jobs and allow people to earn a real living,” said Rep. McNerney.

TRACY, Calif. —
The city of Tracy will be allowed to purchase a 200-acre tract of land from the federal government to build a solar energy project after a bill passed giving the stalled deal the green light.
U.S. Rep. Jeff Denham, R-Turlock, on Wednesday said the president approved the Tracy land conveyance bill, which waived use restrictions on the land.

The land on Schulte Road was conveyed previously to Tracy 14 years ago with the condition that it be used only for recreational or educational purposes.
Denham said the project will help create jobs in California's Central Valley, one of the most economically hard hit areas in the nation.
Tracy Mayor Brent Ives said in a statement that the project could create up to 200 jobs.
