Actually, if it had been open to all from the get go it wouldn't have gathered any liberals. By restricting it, even though they knew it was the new conservative platform, they couldn't stand not knowing what it was. They are trendy. They joined to see what it was about and give them bragging rights. It was the only way to pull in the liberals.
