US is now international โ€˜outlierโ€™ โ€“ Biden

Abortion rights in the US are not quite as restricted as the president implied, however

 

President Joe Biden claimed on Friday that a Supreme Court ruling restricting abortion access has made the US โ€œan outlier among developed nations.โ€ However, while some states have pressed ahead with banning the procedure, others are writing laws in line with other wealthy nations, and Democratic-run states are pushing far more permissive policies than many European countries.

 

Biden addressed the nation after the Supreme Court struck down Roe v Wade, a 1973 ruling that guaranteed the absolute right to a first-trimester abortion and limited rights in the second. Writing the majority opinion, Justice Samuel Alito argued that Roe v Wade rested on an โ€œegregiously wrongโ€ and โ€œexceptionally weakโ€ interpretation of the Constitution, and that by striking down this ruling, the court would โ€œreturn the issue of abortionโ€ to state legislatures.

 

โ€œWith this decision, the conservative majority of the Supreme Court shows how extreme it is, how far removed they are from the majority of this country,โ€ Biden said at the White House. โ€œThey have made the United States an outlier among developed nations in the world. But this decision must not be the final word.โ€

 

Despite Bidenโ€™s proclamation, abortion access in the US is now more in line with the international norm than before, at least for the moment.

 

Prior to the courtโ€™s ruling, the US was one of only seven countries worldwide to permit unrestricted abortion past 20 weeks of pregnancy, with the others Canada, China, the Netherlands, North Korea, Singapore, and Vietnam. Some Republican-controlled states have attempted to lower the cutoff to the point where a fetal heartbeat can be detected, typically between six and 15 weeks into a pregnancy.

 

Mississippi was one of these states, and the Supreme Courtโ€™s Frida ruling was made in a case evaluating the legality of its law banning abortion after 15 weeks.

 

Even with its 15-week cutoff point, Mississippiโ€™s abortion law was more permissive than the policies of Austria, France, Spain, Ireland, Germany and Italy, all of which ban abortion after between 12 or 14 weeks.

 

However, Mississippi will soon ban almost all abortions. The state is one of 13 with a โ€œtrigger lawโ€ on its books. These provide for a near-total abortion ban to come into effect in the event of Roe v Wade being overturned, and following certification by state officials, abortion is expected to be banned except in cases of rape, incest, or threat to the motherโ€™s life, in the coming two weeks.

 

Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Wyoming have all banned abortion in most cases since Fridayโ€™s ruling, or will do so in the coming days and weeks. Abortion law in these most restrictive states will then be in line with that of Poland.

 

In Arizona, Florida, and Georgia, Ohio and South Carolina, legislation will soon take effect banning elective abortions past a cutoff point between six and 15 weeks into pregnancy. Lawmakers in several other states, including Nebraska, Virginia and West Virginia, have promised to introduce similar European-style restrictions in the near future.

 

Access to abortion will remain unchanged in a number of mostly Democratic-run states, and will be expanded in others. California Governor Gavin Newsom on Friday signed a bill shielding out-of-state women seeking abortions in California from prosecution, and another bill that would enshrine abortion access in the stateโ€™s constitution is currently working its way through the State Assembly.

 

Alaska, Colorado, the District of Columbia, Oregon, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico and Vermont all allow elective abortion at any stage of pregnancy. Internationally, only Canada, China, North Korea and Vietnam allow this practice.

โ€œI think the larger development from yesterday,โ€ Stewart said, referring to Cassidy Hutchinsonโ€™s testimony, โ€œis that more Republicans have decided Ron DeSantis is a better option. This is just too much.โ€

 

While there was โ€œnothing surprisingโ€ about how we now know Trump behaved on the day of the insurrection, the host said the difference now is that Republicans have a clear alternative. โ€œNow they know where theyโ€™re going,โ€ he said. โ€œAnd they can steer away from Trump feeling confident. Heโ€™s lost his utility. They never fucking liked him. But heโ€™s starting to lose his utility.โ€

 

โ€œTheyโ€™re starting to realize theyโ€™ve got a guy who they think will do what Trump can do without the revolution part,โ€ he said of DeSantis. โ€œSo the game-changer part and the danger to Donald Trump is simply, theyโ€™ve got a better option now. If a woman is allowed to decide to kill her unborn child, why shouldn't a man be allowed to do the same?

It's his child too.

Without the man, there would be no child.

In fact if killing unborn children is okay, why not allow killing of born children too. Let's say up to 12 years. A child can not really survive on its own for a long time.

 

Let's say the child is such a burden on the parents, why not allow the parents to kill the child as well? And let's reword that, call that a "late born abortion", a LBB, so that people's feelings aren't hurt. Murder is such an emotional word.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) have [knowingly] crafted [unconstitutional] legislation to make [illegal] federal background checks more [illegally] robust.

While strengthening NICS and banning bump stocks might be considered โ€œcommon sense,โ€ these actions are not constitutional. The Constitution does not delegate the federal government any power to maintain and run a background check system for firearms purchases, or to ban firearms accessories.

In fact, the Fox News reporting on the Cornyn/Murphy bill reveals just how easily states can make the proposed law totally ineffectual.

[They can simply refuse to implement it.]

โ€œIn order to ensure that states adhere to the uploading requirements, which the federal government technically cannot force states to do, the bill would create incentives for states to do so, such as by providing grants.โ€

So, if a state simply refuses the incentives, it can completely ignore the proposed law.

Instead of lobbying Congress or hoping the federal courts will issue a favorable opinion, we should focus efforts at the state level where we have a better chance of influencing the process.

Senate fails to clear Biden nominee with Harris in LA

 

The Senate on Wednesday voted against President Bidenโ€™s nominee for an assistant secretary post for the Labor Department, with Vice President Harris in Los Angeles and unable to cast a tie-breaking vote.

 

The upper chamber voted 49-51 on Lisa Gomezโ€™s nomination to become assistant secretary for the Labor Departmentโ€™s Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA), with the vote splitting along party lines in the evenly divided Senate.

 

Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) changed his vote to โ€œnoโ€ amid Harrisโ€™ absence and filed a motion to reconsider to allow him to bring up the nomination for another vote in the future.

 

According to Bloomberg, Republicans voted against Gomez for the post after GOP members expressed concerns about the agencyโ€™s retirement investing proposals, making Harrisโ€™ tie-breaking vote vital for confirmation.

 

Harris is visiting Los Angeles this week to attend the Summit of the Americas. Itโ€™s the first time the U.S. has hosted the gathering of leaders from North, Central and South America since the inaugural summit in 1994.

Heโ€™s been featured on Queerty a few (dozen) times over the years, as well as nearly every gay lifestyle publication, and counts among his Twitter followers drag queens, queer entertainers and major Pride organizations. Speaking to Attitude in 2016, he even said his involvement in the fashion industry has helped him โ€œto become more involved in the gay community.โ€

 

โ€œFor me, thatโ€™s been huge in terms of evolving as a person, who I am, understanding different viewpoints,โ€ he said.

 

But is the admiration shown by queer fans really reciprocated? A dive into his recent Twitter activity suggests not.

 

Boselli links to his Twitter account from his official website. He currently has over 90K followers (small change compared to the 2.9 million on Instagram), but only follows 80 accounts. Scrolling through the accounts he follows, several names raise eyebrows โ€” thereโ€™s Fox News hosts Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson, and other outspoken conservatives like Candace Owens, Caitlyn Jenner, Ben Shapiro and Peter Thiel.

 

Of course, following someoneโ€™s feed and agreeing with their politics donโ€™t necessarily go hand-in-hand, but a deeper dive into individual tweets Boselli has โ€˜likedโ€™ begin to paint a picture.

The news fueled anger across the tech world as these requests run roughshod over the principles and policies upon which virtual private networks and other security software are based.

 

VPNs are technology aimed to protect users' internet privacy and secure their data inside an encrypted tunnel. They aim to prevent third parties from tracking users' activities as well as accessing their sensitive information.

 

It might not only affect peopleโ€™s privacy, but also freedom of speech.

First steps towards a VPN ban?

With most VPN providers vocally defending their no-logs policies and some others even threatening to pull their servers out of the country (opens in new tab), the government might decide to go further and ban all the services that don't comply with its demands.

 

On the other hand, it was less than a year ago when the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs proposed the banning of VPN service in India to counter cybersecurity threats.

 

Although, Tyrell thinks that there is still a concrete possibility that the directive would change: "It is difficult to imagine a scenario in which all local companies are able to adjust their infrastructure and operations in time, therefore there is still a chance that the proposed wording and timeline of the regulation may not be final."

 

What's at stake for users' privacy?

According to the latest statistics from AtlasVPN, India has more than 270 million (opens in new tab) active VPN users who enjoy a better network security, online anonymity and geo-restricted content.

 

Furthermore, ProtonVPN told TechRadar: "The rules would not only make it harder for people to protect their data online but also give the government more tools to monitor peopleโ€™s locations and identities while eroding civil liberties more generally."

 

That's especially worrying in a country where many journalists using this software to cope with a media freedom under attack - India just dropped to 150th out of 180 countries (opens in new tab) in the 2022 Reporters Without Bordersโ€™ Press Freedom Index.

 

And it's not just privacy that's a concern, as the change could also mean higher fees for India VPN users.

 

As Tyrell from NordVPN explains: "From what it seems, the new law will definitely create additional difficulties for the internet infrastructure providers and their operations. Overhead in operation costs may translate into increased costs to end users which for some people might complicate internet access in general."

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis on Tuesday filed petitions with the judge overseeing the special grand jury as part of her investigation into what she alleged was โ€œa multi-state, coordinated plan by the Trump Campaign to influence the results of the November 2020 election in Georgia and elsewhere.โ€

Trump continues to insist that the election was stolen, even as he eyes another presidential run, despite the fact that numerous federal and local officials, a long list of courts, top former campaign staff and even Trump's own attorney general have all said there is no evidence of the fraud he alleges.

Today, 11 October 2018, WikiLeaks publishes a "Highly Confidential" internal document from the cloud computing provider Amazon. The document from late 2015 lists the addresses and some operational details of over one hundred data centers spread across fifteen cities in nine countries. To accompany this document, WikiLeaks also created a map showing where Amazonโ€™s data centers are located.

 

Amazon, which is the largest cloud provider, is notoriously secretive about the precise locations of its data centers. While a few are publicly tied to Amazon, this is the exception rather than the norm. More often, Amazon operates out of data centers owned by other companies with little indication that Amazon itself is based there too or runs its own data centers under less-identifiable subsidiaries such as VaData, Inc. In some cases, Amazon uses pseudonyms to obscure its presence. For example, at its IAD77 data center, the document states that โ€œAmazon is known as โ€˜Vandalay Industriesโ€™ on badges and all correspondence with building managerโ€.

 

Amazon is the leading cloud provider for the United States intelligence community. In 2013, Amazon entered into a $600 million contract with the CIA to build a cloud for use by intelligence agencies working with information classified as Top Secret. Then, in 2017, Amazon announced the AWS Secret Region, which allows storage of data classified up to the Secret level by a broader range of agencies and companies. Amazon also operates a special GovCloud region for US Government agencies hosting unclassified information.

 

Currently, Amazon is one of the leading contenders for an up to $10 billion contract to build a private cloud for the Department of Defense. Amazon is one of the only companies with the certifications required to host classified data in the cloud. The Defense Department is looking for a single provider and other companies, including Oracle and IBM, have complained that the requirements unfairly favor Amazon. Bids on this contract are due tomorrow.

 

While one of the benefits of the cloud is the potential to increase reliability through geographic distribution of computing resources, cloud infrastructure is remarkably centralised in terms of legal control. Just a few companies and their subsidiaries run the majority of cloud computing infrastructure around the world. Of these, Amazon is the largest by far, with recent market research showing that Amazon accounts for 34% of the cloud infrastructure services market.

 

Until now, this cloud infrastructure controlled by Amazon was largely hidden, with only the general geographic regions of the data centers publicised. While Amazonโ€™s cloud is comprised of physical locations, indications of the existence of these places are primarily buried in government records or made visible only when cloud infrastructure fails due to natural disasters or other problems in the physical world.

 

In the process of dispelling the mystery around the locations of Amazonโ€™s data centers, WikiLeaks also turned this document into a puzzle game, the Quest of Random Clues. The goal of this game was to encourage people to research these data centers in a fun and intriguing way, while highlighting related issues such as contracts with the intelligence community, Amazonโ€™s complex corporate structures, and the physicality of the cloud.

At least 54 people were shot, seven of them fatally, Friday into Monday in Mayor Lori Lightfootโ€™s (D) Chicago.

 

Breitbart News noted that 31 people were shot Friday into Sunday morning in Chicago. Four of those 31 shooting victims succumbed to their wounds.

 

ABC 7 / Chicago Sun-Times reports the number of shooting victims was at least 54 by Monday morning, with three more shooting fatalities.

 

The first of those three additional fatal shootings was 29-year-old Keishone Roberts, who was shot and fatally wounded Friday at 5 p.m. He was transported to a hospital where he died.

 

Minutes later, at 5:45 p.m., 26-year-old was shot and killed โ€œin the 6500-block of South Wolcott Avenue.โ€ He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

 

One person was shot and killed, and two others shot and wounded, Sunday morning at 5:30 a.m. The deceased was a 24-year-old man who was shot numerous times and pronounced dead at the scene.

 

Data compiled by the Sun-Times shows 320 people were killed in Chicago January 1, 2022, through July 3, 2022.
