Trump's lead widens over DeSantis in 2024 primary after FBI raid: poll
Poll also shows 39% said raid conducted to "damage" Trump's political career
Former President Trump's lead has grown by 12 points over Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in a hypothetical 2024 Republican presidential primary, according to a survey conducted after the FBI raided the Trump's Florida residence.
If the primary were held today, 58% of registered voters, according to the Morning Consult/Politico survey published Friday.
The joint survey showed last month that 54% of voters said they would support the former president.
In the new survey, DeSantis comes in second to Trump in the possible primary – with 16% of voters saying they would support him, down from 21% last month.
Trump's now 42-point lead follows the FBI raiding Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate Aug. 8, in search of documents from his administration.
The survey was conducted Aug. 10 among 2,004 registered voters, with a margin of error of 2 percentage points.
The poll also shows that 49% of those surveyed said the raid was executed because there was evidence Trump "committed a crime," compared to 39% who said the reason was to "damage his career."
(This is exactly why they will persecute him for the upcoming year and try some shitty things! When this is over they will burn in hell.)

Dem Senate candidate John Fetterman voted to free man convicted of killing teen for heroin money
He previously said he ran for lieutenant governor just to lead the Board of Pardons
Democrat Lt. Gov. John Fetterman was the only person on the Pennsylvania Board of Pardons to vote to commute the sentence of Wayne Covington, who was sentenced to life in prison for shooting and killing a teenager during a robbery for drug money.
Fetterman, who is now running against Republican Dr. Mehemet Oz to replace retiring GOP Sen. Pat Toomey, voted in June 2021 to commute Covington's life sentence, records reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon show. Fetterman chairs the Pennsylvania Board of Pardons as lieutenant governor.
In order to avoid the death penalty, Covington pleaded guilty in 1970 to the first-degree murder of 18-year-old George Rudnycky. Covington and an accomplice were high when they robbed the teen for money to buy heroin.
Rudnycky's family members pleaded to keep Covington behind bars at his commutation hearing, but Fetterman voted as the lone board member to support Covington's release.
Fetterman's campaign website says that he has taken the role of lieutenant governor and "transformed the position into a bully pulpit for criminal justice reform."
He previously said he ran for lieutenant governor just to lead the Board of Pardons and has called to end life sentences for people who were convicted of second-degree murder but did not "pull the trigger."
While Fetterman did not have a problem releasing Rudnycky's killer, the lieutenant governor has worked to free a range of other violent convicted murders through the parole board.
His progressive approach to crime and support for Soros-funded Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner led 13 Pennsylvania sheriffs to write a letter last month about their concerns over his justice policies amid rising crime rates.
Fetterman's campaign did not respond to the Free Beacon's request for comment and the Board of Pardons denied the outlet's public records request for a video or transcript of Covington's release hearing.

Jan 6 protester Epps told FBI he expected terrorist attack, said 'guilty' of being in Capitol
Epps has acknowledged trespassing, urging other protesters to enter the Capitol but he has not been charged, arrested
Ray Epps, an Arizona man who has been the focus of conspiracy theories that federal agents plotted the Jan. 6 riot, reportedly told the FBI that he expected a bomb to go off near the U.S. Capitol during the preceding "Stop the Steal" rally.
Epps acknowledged during two FBI interviews last year, which were reviewed by The Epoch Times, that he trespassed on restricted Capitol grounds and urged other protesters to enter the building
The FBI has never arrested Epps, despite the confessions, nor has the Justice Department charge him with any Jan. 6-related crimes.
While the DOJ has charged more than 850 people in the Capitol riot, the federal government's lack of action, at least so far, on Epps has fueled theories that he may be working for the FBI. Epps has repeatedly denied the allegation.
On March 3, 2021, Epps told the FBI that he had afirst-aid kit in his backpack during the Capitol riot because he expected a terrorist attack. (fucking lying CIA)
"Yeah, I thought there might be a problem. That’s why I was there," he told agents at the time during a meeting with his attorney, John Blischak, in Phoenix.
"I was afraid they were going to set off an explosion on one of the side streets," Epps seems to say in a recording obtained by Epoch. "So we tried to stay in the middle, tried to get there early, tried to stay away from the sides. And if something like that happened, I had a first-aid kit. I could help out."
Epps says he did not plan on attending the rally but told agents that he changed his mind after finding out his son, James Epps Jr., would be attending.
__"I thought something would happen in D.C. I thought there might be, what do they call them, EOD, something like that?"
Epps, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and former Arizona Oath Keepers leader, may have been referring to an improvised explosive device, or an IED.__
"Oh, you mean like a terrorist act?" the agent asked Epps to clarify.
"Right, like a terrorist act," Epps responded.
The agents did not press Epps to elaborate further, nor did they ask about the two pipe bombs law enforcement said were placed near the Republican and Democratic party headquarters before the riot.
The FBI's Washington Field Office waited a year before publicly requesting other field offices to canvass sources for information on the incident, which remains unsolved.
Evidence obtained by Epoch shows that Epps told agents his statements urging other Trump supporters to enter the Capitol were "really stupid."
When Epps contacted the FBI on Jan. 8, 2021, he initially omitted the fact he told people "to go into the Capitol" just days prior.
"I am guilty of being there and probably trespassing," he said at the time. "But I had a reason. I was trying to calm ’em down. I wanted to be there, but I’m trying to calm ’em down. Anything I can do to help. There’s no call for that kind of behavior.I will be your witness."

Rand Paul calls to repeal Espionage Act following Mar-a-Lago raid
Trump is being investigated to see whether he violated the Espionage Act
Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul called for the Espionage Act to be repealed as the Department of Justice is investigating whether former President Donald Trump mishandled classified materials under the 1917 law.
"The espionage act was abused from the beginning to jail dissenters of WWI. It is long past time to repeal this egregious affront to the 1st Amendment," Paul tweeted on Saturday, including a link to a 2019 article titled, "Repeal the Espionage Act" by Jacob G. Hornberger at the Future of Freedom Foundation.
The article described the Espionage Act as a "tyrannical law" that was enacted during World War I "not to punish people for spying but rather for criticizing the draft and the war."
Hornberger specifically defended WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange, who is facing prosecution under the Espionage Act for releasing what Hornberger describes as "a mountain of evidence disclosing the inner workings and grave wrongdoing on the part of the U.S. national-security establishment."
Paul's defense of the former president comes despite a tense relationship at times between the two.
The FBI raided Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida last week to try and find "physical documents with classification markings," information about national defense, and "any government and/or Presidential Records created between January 20, 2017, and January 20, 2021," according to a warrant from the agency.
In his defense, Trump said the documents he had were "all declassified" under a "standing order" that allowed him to take such materials to the White House residence so that he could continue working at night.
