I hate to say it partner but my make a big fat "F" on the volatility of Av Gas. Especially if it's vapor. What always puzzled me is why Boeing would run any kind of electric wire through a fuel tank but tests after the TWA 800 incident in NTSB controlled labs showed conclusively that an electrical spark inside a partially filled tank with a high concentration of vapors would cause just the kind of explosive damage that was present in the TWA wreckage when it was recovered. It's one thing to have the Navy cover up the missile firing scenario but for the NTSB and FAA investigators who helped reassemble the aircraft to see where the damage happened and then coverup evidence of a missile strike would be a real stretch and a very, very hard secret to keep all these years.

 

Missile damage would be easy to see, as the aircraft skin would be peppered with hundreds of holes. There is a radar proximity fuse that detonates the warhead to produce shrapnel as it nears the aircraft.

 

The wreckage did not show that.

 

Heat kerosene to 140 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit and it is as volatile as gasoline at room temperature. The fuel in the center wing tank would be at about that temperature 10 minutes into the flight, due to heat from machinery near the tank and heat from atmospheric skin friction on the wing from 10 minutes of flight up to around 400 mph.

 

This puts to lie the claim of the conspiratorialists that the tank could not contain explosive vapors. In fact with the right mix of air the mostly empty tank would have the explosive potential of gasoline/air vapor at room temp.
