"Russia’s Defense Ministry has warned that the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, currently under Russian control, may have to be shut down if Ukrainian shelling continues.
Speaking during a briefing on Thursday Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s radioactive, chemical and biological defence forces, reported that the plant’s back-up support systems had been damaged as a result of the shelling. Kirillov explained that several disaster scenarios had been modelled at Zaporozhye, and warned that in the event of an accident at the plant, radioactive material could reach Germany, Poland and Slovakia.
The ministry has also reported that Ukraine could be planning to carry out artillery strikes on the plant on Friday, during a visit by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, an attack which would then be blamed on Russia. The ministry says it has detected movements of Ukrainian troops, indicating a looming ‘provocation.’ "
