Free Narcan dispenser in Waukesha seeks to stop the rise of opioid overdoses

Waukesha residents can now get free Narcan kits at a vending machine in the Alano Club.

The machine has dispensed about 200 kits since opening in June, and Addiction Resource Council Inc. specialist Jessica Brost said the more Narcan that is out in the county, the better.

“Every dose that is taken as a success in our eyes. We think it should be accessible and free to get Narcan,” Brost said. “Everybody should have it, so that's why it's there.”

The vending machine is an effort to curb rising opioid overdoses in the county. The county has seen a spike in drug-related overdoses in the past three years, going from 56 in 2019 to 92 in 2021.

The Alano Club, which hosts 12-step programs for drug and alcohol users, hosts the vending machine in the lobby at 318 W. Broadway, Waukesha. The machine dispenses free kits with instructions and two doses of Narcan, for community members to administer in case of an opioid overdose.

Symptoms of an opioid overdose can include shallow or stopped breathing, blue lips or fingertips, small pupils, unresponsiveness or unconsciousness, cold or clammy skin and snoring or gurgling sounds, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.

If someone is experiencing an opioid overdose, Narcan may temporarily reverse the effects, but it is still encouraged to seek medical attention.

Waukesha’s Department of Health and Human Services financed the Narcan, and the Addiction Resource Council installed and maintains the vending machine.

John Kettler, integrated services coordinator for Waukesha County Health and Human Services, said the spikes in overdoses were partly driven by the increase in fentanyl availability. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin, and Kettler said it is particularly dangerous, as even small doses can trigger an overdose.

“Right now, fentanyl is being found in all kinds of different substances, including fake pills,” Kettler said.

Brost said the Addiction Resource CounciI distributes free fentanyl testing strips at their location in Pewaukee for people to apply to pills or substances in order to stay safe.

Naloxone, colloquially known as Narcan, can temporarily reverse an opioid overdose. Brost said the side effects of Narcan are minimal or nonexistent, and it cannot be overdosed on. Each kit comes with instructions and a QR code that links to video instructions.

The Addiction Resource Council will restock it as needed. Each kit is valid for about three years before expiration.

Kettler said they placed the vending machine at the Alano Club to be accessible to current and former opioid users.

“Most folks going to the Alamo Club would be in recovery … They may still know some folks who are actively using,” Kettler said. “So it is a targeted attempt to try to get a better penetration to the using community, those who are still struggling, to get [Narcan] out to them.”

20 million households is a catastrophic level of utility default. This is a serious issue with major social implications created by the desperation of those families. Middle- and lower-income families cannot survive this level of financial pressure.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is supposed to protect Americans by regulating the telecom industry. It has failed to do so for decades (see 1, 2) and this has led to several lawsuits filed against the regulatory agency. In fact, last year, a federal court ruled in favor of organizations and petitioners that sued the FCC for NOT adequately protecting Americans from wireless radiation exposure from 5G and other sources of wireless.

Additionally, in 2019, telecom executives gave congressional testimony that they had NO scientific evidence that 5G is safe.

Despite the court ruling and the congressional testimony, the FCC (see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13) as well as other government and state agencies and committees (see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,7) have continued to promote and fund 5G deployment and densification on land and in space as well as that of 4G and public Wi-Fi (which also poses known exposure risks).

Breaking: Victory Against 5G in Flower Hill

The Flower Hill decision establishes an important legal basis for denying small cell applications for towns and cities in Connecticut, New York and Vermont.

In a landmark legal decision in July of 2022, Judge Frederic Block, Senior United States District Judge for the Eastern District of New York, found that the Village of Flower Hill, NY, was justified in denying the application of ExteNet (acting as an agent for Verizon Wireless) to place 18 small cell antennas in the Village.

The Judge quoted from the 1996 Telecommunications Act, citing the provision that “nothing in this chapter shall limit or affect the authority of a State or local government or instrumentality thereof over decisions regarding the placement, construction, and modification of personal wireless service facilities.”

He noted that other courts have found the Act to be “in many important respects a model of ambiguity or indeed even self-contradiction.” Nevertheless, he reasoned, a plain reading of the text supports the claim by the Village that it has acted legally, establishing a strong written record and denying the applications based on legitimate principles.

This decision is at odds with a very confusing decision from the Ninth Circuit in California concerning the legitimacy of the FCC's action and whether or not Congress intended the Telecommunications Act to apply not only to talk and text, but to a broad array of new services.The Flower Hill case is being appealed to the Second Circuit; if the Appeals Court agrees with Judge Block the issue could go to the Supreme Court.

Nevertheless, for the moment, at least in the Eastern District of New York, local governments should consider denying permits for small cell antennas until and unless the applicant can prove that there is a significant gap in phone coverage in the area.

Even assuming trigger warnings work, which they don’t, as a new study or any parent of a toddler can tell you, nothing could have prepared the attendees of the “Podcast Movement” convention in Texas for the loosing of an animal so dangerous and so contemptible that they may never get over the “pain” of witnessing it. Indeed, so dangerous was this animal, who had been allowed to roam freely and breathe their air, that woke conventioneers moved to immediately leash and lock it up like he was Peter Navarro or something.

Worse, he “did not have a badge.” Oh. My. God. Becky.

Organizers sent urgent messages assuring the aghast podcasters that the conservative host had been confined to “the common space” and did not have a badge so they were safe from his free-range wordsmithing, dangerous ideas, and glad-handing.

In a series of tweets carrying the hashtag #PM22, the organizers of Podcast Movement revealed with crystal clarity their cowardice, showing how easily they would throw over all their promises of fostering “community” to make their tribe happy and shut up a guy whose company paid money for a booth there.

Vulnerable Democrats Already Running Away From Student Debt Fiasco

Joe Biden always knew that the forgiveness of $10,000 per borrower in student loan debt would be politically controversial. On the one hand, he’d receive the gratitude — and votes — of millions of younger voters for taking $10K in debt off their balance sheets. But on the other hand, there are those millions of voters who might resent these younger voters dodging their responsibility — a responsibility they willingly took on — all because they’re an important voting bloc for the Democratic Party.

The three dozen or so vulnerable Democrats and Democratic candidates running in red states know about the controversy as well. And they’re running away from Biden and his student debt fiasco as fast as they can.

Axios:

Tim Ryan, the Democrats’ Ohio Senate nominee, released a critical statement: “Waiving debt for those already on a trajectory to financial security sends the wrong message to millions of Ohioans without a degree working just as hard to make ends meet.”

Nevada Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, one of the most vulnerable Democratic senators up for re-election this year, told Axios: “I don’t agree with today’s executive action because it doesn’t address the root problems that make college unaffordable.”

New Hampshire Rep. Chris Pappas, running in a swing district that Biden carried by six points, said in a statement: “This announcement by President Biden is no way to make policy and sidesteps Congress and our oversight and fiscal responsibilities. Any plan to address student debt should go through the legislative process, and it should be more targeted and paid for so it doesn’t add to the deficit.”

Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet, facing a competitive race in a state Biden carried by 13 points, said the relief should have been “more targeted” and the administration should have laid out how they’ll pay for it.

They all sound like Republicans.

Former Bill Clinton economic advisor Larry Summers doesn’t understand it.

Summers is thinking like an economist, not a politician. There are a gazillion other uses for $300 billion and relieving people of a responsibility to pay back what they borrowed is only one of them.

Last year, Summers presciently argued that Biden’s $1.9 trillion COVID spending package risked fueling inflation. He’s again raising concerns about a major Biden policy priority. In both instances, Biden has listened more to progressive Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren than centrist voices in the party.

If it had been up to Warren and the radical left, Biden would have forgiven all $1.6 trillion in student loan debt. That would have sent most Democratic politicians running for the exits. As it is, he’s in trouble with anyone in his party to the right of Vladimir Lenin.

Records Sought by Judicial Watch May Remain Closed to the Public for Five Years

(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch today announced that the National Security Council (NSC) on May 23, 2017, informed it by letter that the materials regarding the unmasking by Obama National Security Advisor Susan Rice of “the identities of any U.S. citizens associated with the Trump presidential campaign or transition team” have been removed to the Obama Library.

The NSC will not fulfill an April 4 Judicial Watch request for records regarding information relating to people “who were identified pursuant to intelligence collection activities.”

The agency also informed Judicial Watch that it would not turn over communications with any Intelligence Community member or agency concerning the alleged Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential election; the hacking of DNC computers; or the suspected communications between Russia and Trump campaign/transition officials. Specifically, the NSC told Judicial Watch:

Dismissing suggestions that Italy and France were competing for Algerian gas, Macron welcomed a deal Algeria signed last month to pump more gas to Italy, telling reporters it is "good for Italy, it's good for Europe and it improves the diversification of Europe."

European nations have been scrambling to reduce their reliance on Russian energy since the war in Ukraine six months ago.

Italy's Eni, US major Occidental, France's Total, and the Algerian group Sonatrach signed a $4 billion, 25-year oil and gas production-sharing contract last month that will provide Rome with "significant volumes of natural gas," Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said at the time.

An Algerian government source also said the North African country would increase gas exports to Italy by four billion cubic meters.

Italy buys the majority of its natural gas from abroad, with about 45% of its imports historically coming from Russia. Since February, it has sought to boost supplies from Algeria, which has a pipeline through which it can pump gas to Italy.

Algeria supplies around 11% of the natural gas consumed in Europe.

The ball is in Iran's court

On the nuclear deal talks, French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday claimed that the fate of a revived nuclear deal is now in Iran's hands, and an agreement will be "useful" even if it doesn't settle everything.

When asked during a visit to Algeria about the chances of success in reviving the 2015 agreement, Macron boldly said, "Now the ball is in Iran's court."

According to EU's top diplomat Josep Borrell, most countries that are part of discussions with Iran on reviving the 2015 nuclear deal say they agree with the bloc's latest proposal as all sides wait for the United States to respond after Tehran gave its opinion on the draft.

However, that same day, Israeli media cited a security source revealing that "the United States of America has relinquished all its demands to Iran." The source explains that "the assessment is that at this stage the crystallized agreement cannot be stopped," and that "Tehran got the dream deal."

President Macron also called Britain an ally, "whoever its leaders" was. His comments came in response to Liz Truss, anticipated to become UK PM, who said when asked if Macron was a friend or foe, "President Macron: friend or foe?…. The jury's out…”

“If I become Prime Minister, I'll judge him on deeds not words," she said.

"The British people, the United Kingdom, is a friendly, strong and allied nation, regardless of its leaders, and sometimes in spite of its leaders or the little mistakes, they may make in grandstanding," Macron told reporters.

Truss currently leads former finance minister Rishi Sunak by wide margins in polls of the Tory grassroots set to choose their next leader, who will then become prime minister.

Britain and France are allies at the heart of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) political and military alliance, but have differences on a number of issues, particularly after Britain's departure from the European Union.

Updated Information About Obama Presidential Library

The Barack Obama Presidential Library plans to employ a new virtual model that makes records available online. The below bullet points and list of frequently asked questions provide background details and additional information.

The Presidential Libraries Act of 1955 codified the acceptance, in the name of the U.S., of land, buildings, and equipment for the purposes of creating a Presidential archival depository, as well as the role of the National Archives in maintaining, operating, and protecting them as a Presidential archival depository. The Act does not require a foundation to build a facility to house the records and artifacts, nor does it require the National Archives to accept such a facility.

The act was amended in 1986, establishing a presumptive limit of 70,000 square feet for any future Presidential Library facility that will be provided to the government and a requirement for an endowment of 20 percent of the overall initial construction cost of the facility to offset the maintenance costs of the facility. That amount was increased in 2003 to 40 percent and increased again in 2008 to 60 percent.

The Obama Foundation made the decision in May 2017 not to construct a Presidential Library for NARA to house the paper records and physical artifacts. Instead, the Foundation intended to provide funding for the digitization of records so they could be made available online. NARA in turn announced a New Model for the Preservation and Accessibility of Presidential Records in a May 2017 press release.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted these plans. Digitization plans are on hold. With the Obama Presidential records becoming subject to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests onJanuary 20, 2022,NARA will process textual records in a traditional manner, with archival staff processing responsive textual records requested via FOIA from the textual record.

NARA will then digitize these processed records in the same manner records are digitized at other Presidential Libraries as part of the FOIA review and access process. Digitization of these processed records will occur after review/notification has been completed. The paper records will continue to be preserved as permanent records after digitization is complete.

NARA continues to retain legal and physical custody of the records and artifacts. NARA will maintain, preserve, and provide access to the Presidential records of the Obama administration, in accordance with the Presidential Records Act.

NARA will store and preserve the original materials in an existing NARA facility that meets NARA’s standards for archival storage.

The classified records have been relocated to the National Archives at College Park, MD, to facilitate their review for declassification as part of the work by the National Declassification Center (established by President Obama via Executive Order 13526) and in keeping with recommendations of the Public Interest Declassification Board.

While the vast majority of the material transferred into the custody of the National Archives from the Obama administration was “born digital” (the 300 million emails are equivalent to over one billion pages), the 30 million pages of paper records are an integral part of the collection.

The Obama Presidential Center, to be located on Chicago’s South Side in Jackson Park, will be a privately operated, non-federal organization that includes a presidential museum. NARA will not have a Library or staff presence at this site.

Are there any plans to impose this model on existing Presidential Libraries and Museums and, if so, how will that affect NARA employees at those facilities?

NARA has no plans to apply this change retroactively.

The unclassified records and the artifacts will be stored in an existing NARA facility to be determined and the classified records have been moved to the National Archives at College Park, Maryland, where they will be reviewed for declassification by the National Declassification Center (established by President Obama in 2009 by Executive Order 13526).

Will the Barack Obama Presidential Library have an active accessioning program?

Yes. Adding to the body of materials that serve as the archives of each President is an important part of NARA’s mission. The Barack Obama Presidential Library has already accessioned collections donated to us from the public and will continue to do so. Russia FSB: Ukrainian agent spying on military facilities detained

The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) revealed on Friday that officers had detained a Ukrainian intelligence agent in Kursk for spying on military facilities.

The Russian Investigative Committee determined that an explosive device was hidden beneath the car's floor on the driver's side. The FSB revealed that Ukrainian citizen Vovk Natalya was behind the murder.

"The crime was prepared and committed by the Ukrainian special services. The performer is a citizen of Ukraine Vovk Natalya … born in 1979, who arrived in Russia on July 23, 2022, together with her daughter … In order to organize the murder of D. Jean-Pierre had called on Chris Johnson, correspondent for the Washington Blade, but Angolan TV anchor Hariana Veras attempted to ask her own question. She complained that she had been “asking you for a question for a long time.”

As Veras interrupted while Johnson spoke, Jean-Pierre said, “You are not being respectful. To your own colleagues.” As Veras continued, Jean-Pierre said, “Respect your colleagues.”

Ms. Veras is not the only African reporter to feel slighted by KJP.

Veras complained earlier this month when Jean-Pierre did not call on her during a briefing. As she attempted to ask a question and told Jean-Pierre, “Why do we always have to beg for questions? There is and will continue to be a distinct staff dedicated to the preservation, review, and access of the presidential records and artifacts of the Barack Obama administration. No final decisions have been made at this time regarding the number of staff or where they will be located.

How will NARA assist researchers with these digitized records?

NARA is committed to supporting all researchers, whether they visit one of our physical research rooms or access our holdings online. We reach more people today online than we serve in our research rooms around the country, so this is an important issue for us and we are continually exploring how we can increase and improve our engagement with online researchers.

Will any Federal staff work in the museum or on the exhibits, educational, or any other public programming function at the Obama Presidential Center?

NARA will not have a presence at the Obama Presidential Center. DIGITIZATION / RECORDS PROCESSING

Most Presidential records are not publicly available for five years after the end of the administration. NARA will be processing and preparing materials for release to researchers during the five-year period. In general, NARA will not make Obama Presidential records available to the public—in paper or digital formats—before January 2022.

After the records are digitized, NARA will store and preserve the original materials in an existing NARA facility that meets NARA’s standards for archival storage. If there is a compelling need to see an original document, NARA will make it available in one of its public research rooms. Will classified records be digitized?

In time, classified records that have been declassified and then reviewed in accordance with the Presidential Records Act will be digitized and made available to requestors in the same manner that the unclassified records are being made available – i.e., virtually, through the National Archives Catalog and the Barack Obama Presidential Library website.

In what order will documents be processed?

The order of processing, digitization, and public release all remain to be determined until we have more information about work flows, staffing, and budget. Most Presidential records are not publicly available for five years after the end of the administration, and after that are made available in response to FOIA requests. NARA will be processing and preparing materials for release to researchers during the five year period. In general, NARA will not make Obama Presidential records available to the public before January 2022.

Will the Obama Presidential Library respond to FOIA requests in the meantime?

Presidential records are not subject to FOIA for five years. NARA is committed to meeting all our obligations under the Presidential Records Act and the FOIA.

Does processing happen at the same time as digitization?

Metadata created as part of the digitization process may inform processing, but the digitization and review processes are otherwise separate and distinct.

Court Rules California Can't Require Abortion Coverage by Churches

A federal court ruled Thursday that California’s mandate that churches must provide abortion coverage in their employees’ health insurance is an unconstitutional infringement of the free exercise clause in the First Amendment’s guarantee of religious freedom.

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, Sacramento Division, struck down the California Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC) requirement that employers, including Foothill Church in Glendora, Calvary Chapel Chino Hills in Chino, and The Shepherd of the Hills Church in Porter Ranch, must pay for elective abortions through employee health insurance.

Each of the congregations involved as plaintiffs in the case employs more than 50 workers who must be offered health insurance plans. Controversy surrounding the mandate was sparked by a 2014 letter from state officials that ordered seven private health insurance providers to eliminate all restrictions on abortion coverage.

Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), the Arizona-based public interest law firm that specializes in First Amendment/Religious Freedom litigation, represents the congregations in this case.

“The government can’t force a church or any other religious employer to violate their faith and conscience by participating in funding abortion,” said ADF Senior Counsel Jeremiah Galus. “For years, California has unconstitutionally targeted faith-based organizations, so we’re pleased the court has found this mandate unconstitutional and will allow the churches we represent to operate freely according to their religious beliefs.”

Interestingly, emails ADF attorneys obtained during discovery revealed the prominent role Planned Parenthood played in the controversy.

As revealed in e-mails that ADF attorneys discovered, the California Department of Managed Health Care issuedits mandate in response to specific demands from Planned Parenthood. Those demands asked agency officials to implement a ‘fix’ requiring the health plans of religious organizations to include coverage for abortion, regardless of moral or conscientious objections and despite state recognition up to that point that religious groups shouldn’t be subject to such requirements. The abortion giant threatened to promote its own legislative ‘solution’ if the administrative agency didn’t act, so DMHC issued its mandate in 2014,” ADF explained in a statement issued following the court’s decision.

Judge Kimberly J. Mueller, the Chief Judge of the District Court, signed the decision, which said:

In sum, the [DMHC] Director has not shown ‘[she] lacks other means of achieving [her] desired goal without imposing a substantial burden on the exercise of religion by [plaintiffs]. The Director’s denial of the Churches’ request for exceptions to accommodate their religious beliefs, based solely on the fact that those requests did not originate with a plan, was not narrowly tailored to serve a compelling interest.

But the Sacramento Division District Court’s decision was not entirely in favor of the plaintiffs as Judge Mueller denied their motion regarding the state’s alleged violation of the congregations’ rights under the Constitution’s equal protection clause.

The church claims county officials have systematically violated the congregation’s constitutional rights since ordering all public assemblies, including religious assemblies, to cease meeting or impose social distancing requirements as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Calvary Chapel continued meeting, in open defiance of the county’s mandates. County officials then began issuing a series of fines assessed against the church and the pastors as individuals totaling at last count nearly $2.8 million.

But the church was vindicated on August 15 when the California Court of Appeals vacated the fines and ruled the county order in violation of the Constitution.

“For the reasons stated below, we conclude that the temporary restraining orders and preliminary injunctions are facially unconstitutional pursuant to the recent guidance of the United States Supreme Court regarding the First Amendment’s protection of the free exercise of religion in the context of public health orders that impact religious practice (see, e.g., Tandon v. Newsom (2021) 593 U.S. __ [141 S. Ct. 1294] (Tandon).)

“As the underlying orders which Calvary Chapel violated are void and unenforceable, we will annul the orders of contempt in their entirety and reverse the orders to pay monetary sanctions.”…

US B-2 bomber successfully test fires first long-range stealth missile

A B-2 Spirit strategic bomber has successfully test-fired its first long-range stealth standoff missile, aerospace and defense company Northrop Grumman announced on Thursday.

In a press release, the company said "Northrop Grumman and the US Air Force are continuing enhancements to the B-2 Spirit Stealth bomber fleet providing new capability, including its first long-range stealth missile."

"The B-2 successfully released a Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile - Extended Range (JASSM-ER) during a flight test in December," the release added.

According to the company, the JASSM-ER will extend the B-2 bomber’s ability to hit any target anywhere and its successful integration into the B-2 platform will now allow the Air Force to deliver a low observable asset capable of traveling greater distances than its predecessor.

"JASSM-ER is one of three new advanced capabilities being introduced to the B-2 to further modernize the platform. The B-2 fleet …is also integrating crypto modernization and a Radar Aided Targeting System (RATS)," the company explained.

Installation of the Radar Aided Targeting System will complete the latest phase of the B-2's nuclear modernization program, mentioned the release.

Israeli Security Minister Benny Gantz met with the US Central Command chief General Michael Kurilla in Tampa, Florida.

As nuclear talks between Tehran and world powers heat up, the two discussed ways to expand collaboration between "Israel" and the US military, as well as strategies for fighting the so-called Iranian "threat" in the Middle East.

Shortly after 3:00 a.m. this morning, the Maryland State Police, College Park Barrack responded to a single vehicle collision at the eastbound Route 198 (Sandy Spring Road) ramp to northbound I-95, Laurel, Maryland. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee was located off the road and overturned in the woods off the ramp to northbound I-95.

The driver’s name was Howard Thompson 3rd, 45, Laurel, Maryland. He was transported to the Prince George’s Hospital Center and treated for minor injuries. There were two passengers in the vehicle at the time of the collision. One of the passengers in the vehicle, Arden Hall, 44, Laurel, Maryland was partially ejected and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The other passenger was transported to the Prince George’s Hospital Center and treated for minor injuries. His identity is unknown at this time. Next of kin has been notified.

Maryland State Police, Crash Team re-constructionist conducted the detailed crash reconstruction. Preliminary investigation revealed that driver impairment might have contributed to this collision. The cause of the collision is still under investigation but this seems to be a single vehicle collision with no other vehicle involved.

The ramp was closed for approximately for three hours throughout this investigation.The State Highway Administration handled the lane closures.

Anyone with information regarding this crash is asked to contact the Maryland State Police, College Park Barrack. The investigation is continuing.

Solomon Islands denies entry to US coast guard ship

The Solomon Islands authorities have denied entry to US coast guard cutter (USCG) Oliver Henry for a routine logistics port call in Guadalcanal, a spokesperson for the 14th Coast Guard District in Honolulu said.

Guadalcanal is located near the country's capital city of Honiara, and this comes amid a deterioration in the ties between the United States and the Solomon Islands.

"The Government of the Solomon Islands did not respond to the U.S. Government’s request for diplomatic clearance for the vessel to refuel and provision in Honiara," Lt. Kristin Kam said in an email to US newspaper Stars and Stripes on Thursday.

GCG Oliver Henry changed its course accordingly, traveling to Papua New Guinea on Tuesday for refueling and provision, the spokesperson said. However, she did not specify when the vessel was initially expected to make the Guadalcanal port call.

"The US Department of State is in contact with the Government of the Solomon Islands and expects all future clearances will be provided to US ships," Kam added.

The US and the Solomon Islands have long been allies, with a partnership being in place since World War II. The two countries, however, have been growing colder together in recent decades, with the US going as far as shutting down its embassy in Honiara two decades ago.

Due to the wedge between Honiara and Washington, the Solomon Islands started developing ties with China in 2019, causing the United States and Australia to grow concerned.

China around mid-April signed a security pact with the Solomon Islands, which prompted Australia to worry that the pact could be a step toward Chinese military presence less than 2,000 km away.

Zed Seselja, Australia's minister for international development and the Pacific, visited the Solomon Islands' capital Honiara to try to convince authorities not to sign the framework pact.

Officials of both countries denied that China had plans on building a military base on the island nation, but then-Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison still stressed that Beijing constructing a military base in the Solomon Islands would be a "red line" for Canberra and Washington.

The White House even warned that the United States would respond if China establishes a permanent military presence on the Solomon Islands, and a senior US official in the Pacific did not rule out military action against the Solomon Islands if Honiara allowed China to establish a military base.

Regardless, Solomon Islander Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare reassured that his country would not host a foreign military base as this would render it a target for military strikes.

The US, UK, and Australia had formed their AUKUS alliance, ignoring China's concerns on the matter. The alliance was based on enhancing Australia's nuclear capabilities through advanced technology and nuclear submarines in order to increase the alliance's strength in the South Pacific as China grows more influential in its region.

New financial ploy by CIA to meddle in Turkish-Russian affairs

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) used intimidation against Turkish businessmen involved in trade with Russia, prying into their real estate contracts with Russians, Turkish daily Yeni Şafak reported on Friday.

According to the Turkish daily, the CIA Turkey chief called and "openly threatened" the officials of construction companies with links to housing purchases made by Russian entities and individuals. The CIA official reportedly interviewed Turkish businessmen, asking them about the number of houses sold to Russians, the currency and method used in transactions, and other confidential details like if it was paid by cash on hand or through a bank.

Another instance of "meddling" in Turkish internal affairs includes a letter that, according to Yeni Şafak, US Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo sent to the Turkish Industry and Business Association (TÜSİAD). The letter reportedly dated this Monday, August 22, threatened to impose sanctions on TÜSİAD members that were doing business with Russia.

Adeyemo also held a phone call with Turkish Deputy Finance Minister Yunus Elitaş last Friday, in which he made claims that Russian entities and individuals are attempting to use Turkey to circumvent sanctions imposed by the West.

The US and a number of aligned countries began imposing sanctions on Russian individuals and entities in response to the launch of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine in late February. So far, Turkey has not joined the sanctions regime against Moscow.

Lemon suggested that White House officials had prior knowledge of the investigation into the classified documents given that the administration signed off to have the Justice Department examine hundreds of documentshanded over from Mar-a-Lago. Jean-Pierre denied that the Department of Justice and FBI briefed any official at the White House regarding the investigation.

The press secretary told Lemon that this letter deferred the matter to the National Archives and Records Administration and did not know about the search or the approval for the search warrant by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland.

California To Punish Automakers That Don’t Meet Electric Vehicle Production Quotas

California will fine automakers if they do not meet the state’s quotas for electric car manufacturing, the New York Times reported Thursday.

As part of the state’s broader effort to ban the sale of gas-powered vehicles by 2035, California will fine automakers up to $20,000 for every vehicle that falls short of the state’s electric vehicle (EV) production targets, California Air Resources Board (CARB) Chairwoman Liane Randolph told the NYT. California’s new regulations are intended to push the auto industry to produce more electric cars to meet consumers’ elevated demand following the implementation of its gas vehicle phase-out.

The state may also put forth new amendments and revise sales targets if the auto market doesn’t react the way state leaders expect it to, according to the NYT.

“We recognize that not everyone is going to be buying a very expensive, brand-new car,” Randolph told the NYT. “But we also know that prices will go down in the future.”

The average price of an electric car is approximately $66,000, according to Kelley Blue Book.

“The CARB Advanced Clean Cars II rule is a landmark standard that will define clean transportation and set an example for the United States,” said Bob Holycross, Chief Sustainability Officer at Ford, in a statementon Thursday.

Additionally, Ford previously stated that it is investing over $50 billion to build more than two million EVs annually. However, the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which represents Ford and other major automakers, stated that while car manufacturers are eager to put more EVs on the road, supply chain issues and material shortages may prevent production from meeting California’s quotas.

“These are complex, intertwined and global issues well beyond the control of either CARB or the auto industry,” said John Bozzella, president and CEO of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation in a statement provided to the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Republican congressmen are calling on the Pentagon to defund and investigate the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, which was formerly headed by current Central Intelligence Agency Director William Burns, for employing undisclosed Chinese Communist Party members.

Carnegie accepted millions in the form of grants, contracts and donations from the U.S. government during Burns’ tenure as the group’s president, according to government records and Carnegie’s annual reports.

“I call on the Department of Defense to suspend all contracts and projects with [Carnegie],” said Alabama Rep. Mike Rogers.

Republican congressmen are calling on the Pentagon and other agencies to cease funding and investigate an influential D.C. think tank formerly headed by current Central Intelligence Agency Director William Burns concerning its employment of undisclosed Chinese Communist Party (CCP) members.

The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace employed at least 20 undisclosed CCP members and multiple individuals tied to the Chinese government during Burns’ presidency from February 2015 to November 2021, the Daily Caller News Foundation recently revealed. During that time, the U.S. government gave Carnegie millions in the form of grants, contracts and donations, according to government records and the think tank’s annual reports.

“The reported hiring of Chinese Communist Party members by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (CEIP) raises serious policy and counterintelligence concerns that need to be immediately addressed,” Alabama Republican Mike Rogers, the ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee, told the DCNF.

“I call on the Department of Defense to suspend all contracts and projects with CEIP until the circumstances surrounding the hiring of these individuals can be thoroughly investigated,” Rogers said.

Texas Republican Rep. Lance Gooden not only called on the U.S. government to cut off Carnegie’s taxpayer funding, but also to target their tax-exempt status.

“These organizations must exercise due diligence in exchange for their tax-exempt status, especially if they are pushing a narrative or public policy agenda,” Gooden said. “If the organization has tax-exempt status, it should be immediately revoked. They should also be barred from receiving government funds in the future.”

The DCNF discovered Carnegie was employing CCP members and individuals tied to the Chinese government after analyzing hundreds of Chinese-language, Communist Party branch records and personnel profiles from more than a dozen CCP-linked organizations. Expert profiles on Carnegie’s website do not disclose these individuals’ ties to the CCP or Chinese government.

These experts have worked at both Carnegie’s Washington, D.C., headquarters and Carnegie-Tsinghua — the Beijing center Burns’ predecessor, Jessica Mathews, launched in 2010 in cooperation with Tsinghua University.

Batteries fitted with a metal negative electrode are attractive for their higher energy density and lower complexity, the latter making them more easily recyclable. However, the threat of cell shorting by dendrites has stalled the deployment of the technology.

Now, researchers at MIT have developed a new kind of battery, made entirely from abundant and inexpensive materials – aluminum, sulfur, and salt, that could help to fill that gap. In addition to being inexpensive, the new battery is resistant to fire and failures and can be charged very fast, which could make it useful for powering a home or charging electric vehicles.

Today’s lithium-ion batteries are still too expensive for most such applications and contain a flammable electrolyte. So researchers started looking for cheap, Earth-abundant metals that might be able to substitute for lithium. After a search and some trial and error, they settled for aluminum and sulfur as its two electrode materials, with an electrolyte of molten chloro-aluminate salt in between. All these ingredients are cheap, readily available, and not flammable, which means there is no risk of fire or explosion.

In tests, the team showed that the new aluminum-sulfur battery cells could endure hundreds of cycles at exceptionally high charging rates, with a projected cost per cell of about one-sixth that of comparable lithium-ion cells. They showed that the charging rate was highly dependent on the working temperature, with 110 degrees Celsius (230 degrees Fahrenheit) showing 25 times faster rates than 25 C (77 F).

The team chose molten salt as an electrolyte simply because its low melting point turned out to have a fortuitous advantage. It is very good at preventing the formation of dendrites, which are narrow spikes of metal that build up on one electrode and eventually grow across to contact the other electrode, causing a short circuit and hampering efficiency.

The chloro-aluminate salt they chose “essentially retired these runaway dendrites, while also allowing for very rapid charging,” says MIT Professor Donald Sadoway, one of the authors of the study describing the design. “We did experiments at very high charging rates, charging in less than a minute, and we never lost cells due to dendrite shorting.”

Importantly, researchers say the aluminum-sulfur battery requires no external heat source to maintain its operating temperature. The heat is naturally produced electrochemically by the charging and discharging of the battery. “As you charge, you generate heat, and that keeps the salt from freezing. And then, when you discharge, it also generates heat,” Sadoway says.

According to the MIT team, the new battery formulation would be ideal for installations of about the size needed to power a single home or small to medium business, producing on the order of a few tens of kilowatt-hours of storage capacity. The smaller scale of the aluminum-sulfur batteries would also make them practical for uses such as electric vehicle charging stations. Other technologies might be more effective, including liquid metal batteries, for larger installations, up to a utility-scale of tens to hundreds of megawatt hours.

The new technology is already the basis for a new spinoff company called Avanti, which has licensed the patents to the system, co-founded by Sadoway. The first order of business for the company is to demonstrate that it works at scale and then subject it to a series of stress tests.

According to Acting Inspector General of the Department of Defense Sean O'Donnell, Ukraine keeps track of the weapons using "hand receipts".

"It is all paper," the official acknowledged, adding that he doubts that the Kiev authorities "have much fidelity" as to where the arms end up. O'Donnell noted that a "lack of effective record-keeping" got in the way of Pentagon investigations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, NATO officials appear to be "confident that the security was sufficient for the transfer of weapons," O'Donnell said. Interestingly, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu previously said the arms supplied by the West to Ukraine were ending up on the black market and spreading across West Asia.

The total number of Ukraine-related military contracts signed with the US reached 7,800 valued at a total of around $2.2 billion, with the latest military aid package valued at $2.98 billion.

A senior US defense official warned, on Tuesday, that hundreds of millions of dollars worth of US weapons sent to Ukraine might “drop into a big black hole, and you have almost no sense of it at all after a short period of time," stressing that the US military supply to Ukraine is "certainly the largest recent supply to a partner country in a conflict."

However, current US officials and defense analysts agree that the risk is that some of those weapons will end up in the hands of mercenaries.

A Central American human trafficker said that cartels are harvesting children’s organs and stuffing drugs in their corpses as part of their illicit and profitable cross-border operations, the anonymous trafficker revealed in an interview with Fox News contributor Sara Carter.

“In most cases, they wanted to sell their organs, so that is the reason they take children,” the trafficker, whose face and voice were concealed, told Carter.

The trafficker said children are used because they yield high profits.

Quantum information, communication, and sensing rely on generating and controlling quantum correlations in complementary degrees of freedom. Experts worldwide are trying to implement findings from basic research into quantum technologies.

Sometimes they require individual particles, including photons with special properties. However, getting individual particles is challenging and calls very sophisticated techniques. Free electrons are already used in many applications to produce light, such as X-ray tubes.

In a new study, scientists from EPFL‘s Laboratory of Photonics and Quantum Measurement, Göttingen Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences (MPI-NAT), and the University of Göttingen demonstrate a novel method for generating cavity-photons using free electrons, in the form of pair states. They created electron-photon pairs using integrated photonic circuits on a chip in an electron microscope.

In an experiment, scientists pass the beam of an electron microscope on a built-in integrated photonic chip. The chip consists of a micro-ring resonator and optical fiber output ports. This new approach uses photonic structures fabricated at EPFL for transmission electron microscope (TEM) experiments performed at MPI-NAT.

A photon can be produced whenever an electron interacts with the ring resonator’s vacuum evanescent field. The electron loses the energy quantum of a single photon in this process while adhering to energy and momentum conservation principles. The system develops into a pair state as a result of this interaction. The scientists’ accurate simultaneous detection of electron energy and produced photons, made possible by a newly created measurement technique, revealed the underlying electron-photon pair states.

Besides observing this process for the first time at the single particle level, these findings implement a novel concept for generating a single-photon or electron. Specifically, the measurement of the pair state enables heralded particle sources, where detecting one particle signals the generation of the other. This is necessary for many applications in quantum technology and adds to its growing toolset.

Claus Ropers, MPI-NAT Director, said, “The method opens up fascinating new possibilities in electron microscopy. In the field of quantum optics, entangled photon pairs already improve imaging. With our work, such concepts can now be explored with electrons.”

In experiment, scientists used the generated correlated electron-photon pairs for photonic mode imaging. They were able to achieve a three-orders of magnitude contrast enhancement.

Dr. Yujia Yang, a postdoc at EPFL and a co-lead author of the study, adds: “We believe our work has a substantial impact on the future development in electron microscopy by harnessing the power of quantum technology.”

Tobias Kippenberg, professor at EPFL and head of the Laboratory of Photonics and Quantum Measurement, said, “A particular challenge for future quantum technology is how to interface different physical systems. For the first time, we bring free electrons into the toolbox of quantum information science. More broadly, coupling free electrons and light using integrated photonics could open the way to a new class of hybrid quantum technologies.”

The study could lead to the currently emerging field of free-electron quantum optics. It could also demonstrate a powerful experimental platform for event-based and photon-gated electron spectroscopy and imaging.

Guanhao Huang, a Ph.D. student at EPFL and co-lead author of the study, said, “Our work represents a critical step to utilize quantum optics concepts in electron microscopy. We plan to explore further future directions like electron-heralded exotic photonic states and noise reduction in electron microscopy.”

EPFL researchers have discovered a compound that can remember the entire history of previous external stimuli. Vanadium Dioxide (VO2) has an insulating phase when relaxed at room temperature and undergoes a steep insulator-to-metal transition at 68 °C, where its lattice structure changes.

Classically, VO2 has a volatile memory: The material returns to the insulating condition immediately when the excitation is removed. Scientists sought to learn how long it takes for VO2 to change states. After doing many measurements, they discovered a memory effect in the material’s structure, which changed the course of their research.’

Scientists applied an electric current to a sample of VO2.

Mohammad Samizadeh Nikoo, a Ph.D. student at EPFL‘s Power and Wide-band-gap Electronics Research Laboratory (PowerLab), said, “The current moved across the material, following a path until it exited on the other side. The current heated up the sample and caused the VO2 to change state. And once the current had passed, the material returned to its initial state.”

Scientists then applied a second current pulse to the material and saw that the time it took to change state was directly linked to the history of the material.

Prof. Elison Mattioli, who heads the PowerLab, said, “The VO2 seemed to ‘remember’ the first phase transition and anticipate the next. We didn’t expect to see this kind of memory effect, and it has nothing to do with electronic states but rather with the material’s physical structure. It’s a novel discovery: no other material behaves this way.”

“We found that VO2 can remember its most recent external stimulus for up to three hours. The memory effect could persist for several days, but we don’t currently have the instruments needed to measure that.”

This is a significant discovery as the memory effect they observed is an intrinsic property of the material itself. Engineers use memory to perform various calculations, and there is a considerable need for materials that could improve computation performance by providing more capacity, speed, and compactness. All three of these criteria are met by VO2. Furthermore, it differs from traditional materials that store data as binary information dependent on modifying electrical states due to its persistent, structural memory.

To reach their conclusions, the scientists used a variety of measurements. By using the novel method on various materials at other facilities worldwide, they could confirm their findings. VO2 switches behave exactly like neurons in this discovery, perfectly mimicking what occurs in the brain.

President Barack Obama has opted to keep his presidential records under wraps for 12 years after he leaves office on Jan. 20.

Obama sent a letter to the National Archives in Julyauthorizing close aide Anita Decker Breckenridgeto act as his representative in the release of his White House records in future decades.

Obama’s notice, dated July 26, 2016, means that if he were to die or become incapacitated before 2029, Breckenridge would retain discretion over which advice and appointment-related records should be made public, according to Politico.

“If a president were to die in office without signing a letter similar to the one Obama signed in July, much of that confidential advice could go public after five years,” the Politico report said.

Both Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush signed their restriction letters less than two years after taking office. Obama waited until year eight of his presidency to sign his.

"During WWII and the 1940’s, it became more apparent that tea tree oil was a valuable resource to not only the Australian economy, but to the overall health of soldiers and factory workers as well."

Just before the outbreak of the war, a study published by the Medical Journal of Australia found that tea tree oil was effective in treating infections of the skin and nails, and in dissolving the pus of those infected areas. It also reported that sore throats went away more quickly when gargling with a few drops of tea tree oil added to a glass of water.

Tea tree oil as a first aid remedy may also have helped to repel some insects as it helped prevent infection and promoted healing.

WWII and invention

It was an age of discovery, and before the advent of penicillin in the late 1940’s, it was found to be useful against dental problems, throat and mouth infections, fungal infections, Candida, and other skin infections.

As a disinfectant, it was added to the first aid kit of nearly every Aussie soldier and sailor assigned to subtropical regions during WWII .

It found it’s place in machine shops and ammunition factories, because it was observed that diluting the cutting oil used in metal shops with just 1% tea tree oil reduced the rate of infection dramatically from the metal shaving and splinters that are common in such work.

In modern times, tea tree oil is finding uses in electronics and the manufacture of flex screens for future computer and mobile phone uses, as well as perhaps more creative ideas too!

Field hospitals used bandages that were treated with tea tree oil in order to reduce infection in wounds, and even today, tea tree oil is used in some burn ointments and emergency gel packs to reduce the pain and minimize infections from serious burns.

Tea tree harvesters, or “cutters” were exempt from military service, as were the producers of tea tree oil, because it was seen as an essential Australian commodity and was standard issue for the military first aid kits. If the Federal Bureau of Investigation is going to be roving the countryside looking for presidential documents, then Barack Obama’s residence must be next. By now, you all know about the federal raid on Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home, executed under the pretense of document retrieval. The FBI deployed many agents to find documents for the National Archives. The political class doesn’t want Trump to run again, and they used their allies at the Department of Justice to deliver that warning. Agents broke into the safe, manhandled Melania Trump’s clothing, and absconded with boxes of supposed documents meant for preservation, but reportedly barred Trump’s lawyers from overseeing the search.

All of this over some reported missing records—it’s just waggish that the feds would think we, the American people, would buy this narrative. I don’t think even the staunchest Trump hater even believes this line, with their main criticism being just that—the cover story isn’t plausible. It’s not, but let’s have some fun with this game. If federal agents are roving nationwide to ensure the National Archives is content, then Obama’s house must be ransacked next because the issue tracking all his documents stems back to 2018. Troves of Obama files went missing—vanished into the ether. Real Clear Politics around this time reported on the lost files, with Hillary Clinton’s email fiasco via her private homebrew server again being mentioned (via RCP):

In the middle of directing the difficult task of transferring the historically important records of the Obama administration into the National Archives, the archivist in charge,David Ferriero, ran into a serious problem: A lot of key records are missing.

A first-rate librarian, Ferriero has been driving a much-needed digital overhaul and expansion of the National Archives over the nine years of his appointment. This will greatly improve the ability of digital search locally and remotely, as well as accessing the files themselves.

To support this effort, in 2014 President Obama signed the Presidential and Federal Records Act Amendments. For the first time electronic government records were placed under the 1950 Federal Records Act. The new law also included updates clarifying "the responsibilities of federal government officials when using non-government email systems" and empowering "the National Archives to safeguard original and classified records from unauthorized removal.” Additionally, it gives the Archivist of the United States the final authority in determining just what is a government record.

And yet the accumulation of recent congressional testimony has made it clear that the Obama administration itself engaged in the wholesale destruction and “loss” of tens of thousands of government recordscovered under the act as well as the intentional evasion of the government records recording system by engaging in private email exchanges. So far, former President Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Attorney General Lynch and several EPA officials have been named as offenders. The IRS suffered record “losses” as well. Former federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy called it “an unauthorized private communications system for official business for the patent purpose of defeating federal record-keeping and disclosure laws.”

Construction for the Obama library began last year, but before its opening, maybe we should check if he doesn’t have records tucked away at his Martha’s Vineyard estate. I mean, the man wanted over 10,000 documents kept under seal. Boxes of papers from Mar-a-Lago were already returned to the National Archives last February, and the feds still came down on Trump looking for anything to keep the Russian collusion myth alive—I mean, those precious presidential papers that just needed an escort by the Hoover brigade. It’s a circus. Obama's residences should be raided when the GOP regains executive control if we’re prying open safes of former presidents based on political bias. We just must ensure that the Presidential Records Act is being honored. It’s patriotism. That’s what some people are telling me.
