US asked UK spies to stop Snowden leaks publication – media

Britain’s GCHQ ultimately rebuffed the American request

The US National Security Agency (NSA) lobbied its British counterpart, GCHQ, to stop the Guardian from publishing Edward Snowden’s revelations about its mass surveillance programs in 2013, according to a book previewed in the British newspaper.

An NSA official called Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) chief Sir Iain Lobban in the early hours of June 6, 2013, the book claims. According to its author, investigative journalist Richard Kerbaj, Lobban was asked to intervene and prevent The Guardian from publishing Snowden’s story – which revealed the existence of an illegal NSA spying program on the American public.

Lobban, however, reportedly felt that “the proposition of urging a newspaper to spike the article for the sake of the NSA seemed a step too far,” and that it was “neither the purpose of his agency nor his own to deal with the NSA’s public relations.”

Later that day, the Washington Post and The Guardian published their first stories based on the classified documents leaked by Snowden. The first articles detailed the NSA’s use of a top-secret court order to collect the telephone records of millions of Verizon customers, and later stories revealed that the agency collected data through ‘back doors’ into US companies such as Google and Facebook, and that it collected phone calls and emails from citizens of Germany, Brazil, and dozens of Latin American, European, and Middle Eastern countries.

Snowden’s documents also revealed that then-President Barack Obama ordered cyberattacks on foreign targets and that his administration bugged the offices of foreign embassies and governments, among countless other misdeeds.

While the GCHQ initially took a hands-off approach, then-Prime Minister of the UK, David Cameron, warned The Guardian in October that he would use legal mechanisms “or other tougher measures” to stop it publishing any more of Snowden’s leaks. This warning came after a slew of stories accused GCHQ of engaging in the same widespread data collection practices, and revealed that the British agency had worked with the NSA to spy on foreign citizens and governments, including those of their allies.

The US Justice Department unsealed espionage charges against Snowden on June 21, after which the US State Department revoked his passport. Two days later he arrived in Moscow where he was offered asylum a month later. Snowden was granted permanent residency in Russia in 2020.

Pfizer accused of offering ‘flagrantly illegal’ fellowship program

Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has drawn backlash over its ‘Breakthrough Fellowship’ program, which only accepts students of black/African, Latino/Hispanic, and Native American descent, barring white and Asian students from even applying.

In a Tuesday article published by the Washington Free Beacon, a number of civil rights lawyers stated that Pfizer’s fellowship program was “flagrantly illegal” and a clear violation of the Civil Rights acts of 1866 and 1964, which ban racial discrimination in employment and contracting.

Announced on the company’s website, the nine-year program says it offers college students multiple internships and a fully-funded master’s degree, as well as several years of employment at the pharmaceutical giant. Pfizer says it plans to “develop” 100 fellows by 2025 through the program, which it claims aims to “increase diversity by fostering a more inclusive workplace” and cultivating a “pipeline of diverse talent.”

However, lawyers quoted by the Washington Free Beacon say the fact that white and Asian students are barred from applying to the fellowship is blatant discrimination and is a “clear case of liability” under federal law.

“This Pfizer program is so flagrantly illegal I seriously wonder how it passed internal review by its general counsel,” Adam Mortara, one of the country’s top civil rights attorneys, told the outlet.

His opinion was seconded by Gail Heriot, a member of the US Commission on Civil Rights, who stated that “major corporations seem to have forgotten that there’s such a thing as law.”

“They seem to think that as long as they’re woke, they’re bulletproof,” Heriot noted.

Other lawyers contacted by the Free Beacon said that the case against Pfizer was “open-and-shut” and that the Breakthrough Fellowship was “obviously illegal” and a “very facial violation” of Civil Rights statutes.

While Pfizer has yet to officially respond to the accusations, it’s noted that some major US companies have previously scrapped race-conscious programs after being faced with discrimination lawsuits. One such example is Coca-Cola, which last year was pressured by the American Civil Rights Project to drop a requirement that partner law firms must staff at least 30 percent of their teams with “diverse lawyers.”

Barr continued by propping up the lie that Joe Biden won the 2020 Election outright and shared the following about President Trump:

[President Trump received 75 million legitimate votes in the 2020 Election – more than any President or Republican ever. Barr apparently believes senile Joe Biden recieved 81 legitimate votes as well.]

In regards to Russiagate Barr said that Russia stole emails and dumped them into the public arena. But this is not true. The CEO of Crowdstrike, the firm identified in public reports as supporting the claims that Russia hacked the DNC and gave the emails to WikiLeaks in 2016, shared under oath that there was no evidence for this.
