one of the Apollo missions went up during a time, supposedly, that there were solar flares and . . . the theories about radiation and humans suggest that if they really were outside the Van Allen belt, that they would have become what is technically called 'crispy critters'. but they were fine which makes some posit that perhaps they really didn't go there.
