should be fairly obvious it happens, on average, every seven years, every time october first is a saturday.
january first must fall on one of seven weekdays. that makes seven possible non-leap yr calendars
taking into account leap years, that makes fourteen possible calendars.
one of the seven non-leap yr calendars will have october first fall on a saturday.
one of the seven leap yr calendars will have october first fall on a saturday.
since there are fourteen possible calendars, but leap years happen ever four years and october is after february, the first day of october will cycle thru the days of the week in an irregular fashion, but in the long run, october first has to fall on a saturday twice every fourteen years, or once every seven yrs on average, or ONE HUNDED AND SEVENTEEN TIMES in 823 yrs.
without even thinking about calendars at all, anyone could use the calendar app on their phone/puter to click backwards, and thereby discover that it happened most recently in 2016. the only thing that is required is to question "authority." especially when it is so obviously ridiculous.

to be fair, my sister is usually smarter than this. she didn't think about it because she had already categorized it as unimportant.
