WASHINGTON, Oct 3 (Reuters) - Mike Lindell, a prominent ally of former President Donald Trump, must face a $1.3 billion lawsuit by Dominion Voting Systems Inc accusing him of defamation for pushing false claims that its voting machines rigged the 2020 presidential election, with the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday turning away his appeal.
The justices rejected a bid by Lindell and his company My Pillow Inc to immediately appeal a federal judge's refusal to toss the lawsuit. A lower court also snubbed his effort to quickly review the case, allowing the litigation to proceed.

Apple CEO Tim Cook visits with Pope Francis at the Vatican

As part of his trek through Europe, Apple CEO Tim Cook has paid a visit to the Vatican to meet with Pope Francis. Details about what exactly the two discussed during the visit are unclear, but there was a “private audience” in attendance, according to the Vatican.
As pointed out by Reuters, the visit comes as Pope Francis has been increasingly outspoken against smartphones and some of the addictive habits that come with them. In 2019, he called on people to free themselves “from the addition to mobile phones,” saying that “when you become a slave to your phone phone, you lose your freedom.
He also has called it “sad” that people use their smartphones during Mass and while at the dinner table. But of course, Tim Cook has also said that Apple doesn’t operate with the goal of enticing people to use their iPhone and other Apple products all the time.

Portugal abuse cases mount amid questions over Nobel bishop
Clergy sexual abuse cases are casting a pall over the Catholic Church in Portugal, ensnaring senior officials even as authorities scramble to explain why shelter was given to a Nobel Peace Prize-winning bishop at the center of sexual misconduct allegations.
Senior Catholic leaders apologized over the weekend for decades of abuse and cover-up — current estimates number around 400 cases — with the archbishop of Lisbon begging the faithful to not lose faith in the church.

“Be confident that for our part we will do our best, with respect to the law and the Gospel,” Archbishop Manuel Clemente said after Sunday Mass.
A spotlight fell on Portuguese church authorities, as well as the Vatican, last week when the Holy See’s sex abuse office confirmed a Dutch media report that in 2020 it had secretly sanctioned Bishop Carlos Ximenes Belo, the revered independence hero of East Timor, a small former Portuguese colony in East Asia. Belo, who has been living in Portugal, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996.
