Eric J. Fretz, associate professor of peace and justice studies at Denver’s Regis University, explains in the journal how he taught a course called “Stand Up and Fight: Saul Alinsky and the Community Organizing Tradition” at Regis University and two other colleges over the past decade.

Fretz describes the Jesuit community’s “political turn to the left” in the mid-20th century and Pedro Arrupe’s call for “collectively entering upon a more severe way of the cross.”

“We should go back and revisit that bifurcation we have created between academics and activists,” Fretz wrote, adding, “We are all, in varying degrees, both academics and activists, and those two things can live together in harmony in one being.”

History professor Michael Kazin, of the Jesuit Georgetown University in Washington, defends Alinsky while speaking of him alongside “a community organizer from Calcutta named Mother Teresa.”

“Alinsky frequently spoke at Catholic venues and regularly advised young seminarians who were eager to improve the well-being of the men and women they would soon be serving, many of whom were poor and needed help organizing themselves to demand jobs and better services from local authorities,” Kazin wrote in the New Republic in 2012.

The FBI described Alinsky’s ties to Catholic organizations in the narrative of a 1972 investigation in Baltimore. The agency found Alinsky working with the Industrial Areas Foundation, a nationwide network of faith-based community organizing groups, and Baltimore’s North East Community Organization."

Analysis: Amid new testimonies, Vatican corruption trial points to key question

The hearings at the Vatican’s corruption trial resumed last week and shed light on new aspects of the “trial of the century” and the broader context of Vatican finances.

Behind every decision and litigation, in the end, one can glimpse a power struggle, whether it is big or small, systemic or personal.

Primarily, the trial revolves around the Secretariat of State’s investment in luxury real estate in London. However, it also explores further criminal allegations.

Cardinal Angelo Becciu, for instance, also faces charges for allocating money from the Secretariat of State to Caritas in his native region. The Sardinian is furthermore called to answer for the engagement of Cecilia Marogna as a consultant to the Secretariat of State.

However, the big deal at the center of the trial is the luxury property investment.

The Secretariat of State bought shares of the property on London’s Sloane Avenue and repeatedly changed brokers — apparently to make the investment profitable — before deciding to buy the property, only to sell it at a considerable loss.

The court will determine if the businessmen who profited on the Secretariat of State’s investment behaved legally and in accordance with the contracts.

A broader scenario emerges

The trial also digs into financial details. However, taking a look at the broader scenario emerging from the investigations is essential to understanding what happened.

After a two-month break, the hearings resumed on Sept. 28 with interrogations of the defendant Fabrizio Tirabassi, a former official of the administrative section of the Vatican Secretariat of State, and the lawyer Nicola Squillace.

For now, only two witnesses have been heard: Roberto Lolato, who acted as consultant to the Vatican promoter of justice to extricate himself from the terms of the deal, and Alessandro Cassinis Righini, auditor general of the Holy See.

Let’s start with the testimony of Cassinis Righini, made on Sept. 30.

A climate of hostility and use of Peter’s Pence

The auditor not only disclosed a climate of hostility for his work in the Vatican and especially on the part of the Secretariat of State, but he also went so far as to point out that advice on investments was not just about the soundness of investments.

This statement was made with all the competence of an auditor, who is, above all, to ensure that the accounts are in order and compliant with international standards.

Cassinis Righini also stressed that that was not the way to manage the money from Peter’s Pence, and when asked, he said he was confident that it was indeed Peter’s Pence’s money.

The question of whether this is the case or simply a case of “mistaken identity” has been raised previously. The Secretariat of State has had an account since 1939 called the “Conto Obolo,” (Obolo is the Italian for “pence”).

The auditor also contested the operations of the Secretariat of State. He said that the Vatican department’s assets of more than 900 million euros were almost all in Switzerland. He spoke of 516 million euros or 564 million euros on two occasions.

A question of audits

The Secretariat of State has always had autonomy in the management of funds. So much so that there is a rescript from Pope Francis of Dec. 5, 2016, which reaffirms the independence of the Secretariat of State.

The rescript ended a dispute in 2016 when accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) was tasked with auditing the Vatican accounts.

The Secretariat of State opposed the transparency initiative’s brief and then redefined the contract with PwC to play an assisting role, “adaptable to the Holy See’s needs.”

The aftermath of this was reflected in the testimony of Cassinis Righini. He described a clash between those who wanted to defend the Holy See and those who, in reality, wanted to make a company out of the Holy See.

In a climate of tension, it is easy to create enmities. Cassinis Righini also stressed that it would have been better not to pursue the contract with Gianluigi Torzi.

Torzi had taken over the management of the London Palace real estate fund, keeping the unique 1,000 shares with voting rights for himself. Cassinis Righini said that once he was involved in the analysis of the contracts, he would immediately let it be known that the negotiations would have to be stopped.

But the negotiations were not interrupted. According to the available testimonies and interrogations, this decision was made by Monsignor Alberto Perlasca, then head of the administration of the Secretariat of State, who also dealt with the negotiations in London without a lawyer from the Holy See.

Yet Perlasca was not on the list of the first 27 witnesses presented by the promoter of justice. The prosecution might have decided that Perlasca’s documented testimony was already sufficient.

The president of the Vatican Tribunal, Giuseppe Pignatone, urged to include Perlasca among the witnesses. However, it turned out that Vatican prosecutor Alessandro Diddi wanted to summon him only toward the end of his list of witnesses. Certainly, Perlasca’s absence from the first number of witnesses was striking.

Who made what money?

Another aspect is the management of Vatican finances, which has been family-oriented for a long time.

Faced with Tirabassi’s desire to leave the Secretariat of State in 2004, the then director of administration, Monsignor Gianfranco Piovano, gave him the authorization to practice outside the Vatican and a power of attorney for advice with Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS). This Swiss bank held part of the funds of the Secretariat of State.

From 2004 to 2009, the year in which the Holy See ended the relationship with UBS, Tirabassi earned 1.36 million euros in dividends. That is to say, he made about 200,000 euros each year.

With the termination of the relationship with UBS, this “bonus” ended.

The question of Tirabassi’s wealth was the subject of much of his interrogation, aimed at ascertaining whether the office of the Secretariat of State took commissions or other amounts of money.

The courtroom heard that everything was legal and above board.

A cautioning word from the tribunal president

Before starting the phase of listening to the witnesses, Pignatone invited everyone to be precise and concise, reminding witnesses that everything was on record.

At the same time, he recalled that he had allowed a broad debate, “also admitting questions that would have been inadmissible.”

In this way, Pignatone made it clear that he was aware of procedural flaws but that, at the same time, he would ensure smooth proceedings.

A note about the consultant Lolato: He worked in the office of the auditor general from 2016 to 2019 and was then moved to the Vatican’s Gendarmerie to collaborate in the investigation. He was alongside Cassinis Righini in the auditor’s first appraisals of the property.

Cassinis Righini first said he was sure that the pope did not know anything about the investment but that it was known to the high levels of the Secretariat of State.

However, he then had to admit that he couldn’t say for sure if the pope knew.

Plausible deniability?

Cassinis Righini testified that decisions were made that required explicit authorization from superiors.

Based on this testimony, it seems unlikely that no one informed Pope Francis, let alone his Secretary of State.

The pontiff was photographed in Santa Marta with Gianluigi Torzi on Dec. 26, 2018, when Torzi was negotiating his exit from the deal.

These latest testimonies at the trial thus provide a broader scenario that raises numerous questions — even if it helps to understand the climate at the beginning of the investigation.

The key question is just how and why the Secretariat of State’s investments were made — and this question awaits an answer.

Climate change documentary features Pope Francis

Pope Francis is featured in a documentary film on climate change and the environment that premiered at the Vatican on Tuesday.

“The Letter,” which can be streamed for free on YouTube Originals starting Oct. 4, follows a climate activist, an indigenous leader, a climate refugee, and married marine biologists as they travel from their corners of the world to the Vatican to speak to Pope Francis.

The film includes video from the meeting with Pope Francis as well as never-before-seen footage from Francis’ papal inauguration on March 19, 2013.

The inspiration for the documentary’s title was taken from the word “encyclical,” which is used for certain papal messages and literally means “circular letter.” The title refers to Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical Laudato si'.

Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa, OFM, preacher of the papal household, also appears in “The Letter” to speak about the Franciscan roots of Pope Francis’ encyclical on the environment.

The world premiere of the film took place in the Vatican’s New Synod Hall on Oct. 4, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi.

Oct. 4 also marked the Holy See’s formal accession to the 2015 Paris Climate Accords.

Cardinal Michael Czerny, prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, presented the film at a press conference on Tuesday. Czerny’s dicastery was a partner of the film together with the Vatican’s communications office.

“The film ‘The Letter’ highlights the key concept of dialogue,” he said. “Dialogue is central to the Holy Father’s vision for humanity’s peace with the Creator, with all creation, and among us humans.”

Hoesung Lee, chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, said at the press conference that the film “is a timely reminder of the urgency and importance of Laudato si’.”

“Both the science community and the faith community are very clear: the planet is in crisis and its life support system [is] in peril. The stakes have never been higher, and we should be the source of the solution to this crisis,” he added.

The film’s writer and director, Nicolas Brown, said the exercise of making the documentary “has been one of getting out of our bubbles and meeting each other across this planet. These voices are important largely because they are the perspectives of those who suffer the most.”

Traditionalist Priest Admits Probable Cause for Child Porn

Fr. James Jackson, FSSP agrees to remain in jail

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (ChurchMilitant.com) - A traditionalist priest is admitting there is probable cause for the government to prove he had child porn.

In an Oct. 3 detention hearing in Rhode Island District Court, Fr. James Jackson, a priest of the Fraternity of St. Peter, admitted probable cause exists for the federal government to prove he violated multiple conditions of his bond, including possession of child porn.

Jackson was arrested in October 2021 for possession and distribution of child pornography involving infants, toddlers and bestiality.

He was released on bond with electronic monitoring, and permitted to travel to Kansas to stay with family.

In July, he was rearrested for violating the conditions of his bond, although no details were released at the time. He was transported back to Rhode Island, where he has been detained in jail.

The Oct. 3 docket notes, "Court informs defendant of 'technical violations.' Defendant admits to all three violations; Defendant admits to probable cause as to remaining violations."

In comments to Church Militant, the spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Rhode Island explained that Jackson admitted the federal government could prove he violated the following release conditions:

That he not possess any materials including videos, magazines, photographs, computer-generated depictions or any other forms that depict sexually explicit conduct involving children; that he have access to only one internet-connected device; that he notify his supervising probation officer of all computers or electronic data storage devices where he was residing and to report any additional acquisitions.

Additionally, he further admitted that the government could establish probable cause that he committed a new crime, to wit, possession of child pornography, while on pretrial release. To be very clear — he did not admit that he committed the new crime, only that the government could establish probable cause that he did.

He conceded that he be detained pending further proceedings.

Affidavit: Extreme Child Porn

A three-month sting led to a raid of Fr. Jackson's rectory at St. Mary's Parish in Providence on Oct. 30, 2021. The sting revealed child porn had been downloaded from and uploaded to and sent from Jackson's computer on Sunday, Sept. 26; Friday, Oct. 15; and Sunday, Oct. 17.

TERNI, Italy (ChurchMilitant.com) - An Italian bishop has come under fire for inaugurating a Masonic lodge along with the grand master of Italy's biggest Freemasonic organization.

Francesco Antonio Soddu, bishop of the diocese of Terni-Narni-Amelia, joined Grand Master Stefano Bisi of the Grand Orient of Italy last Tuesday in the ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the GOI lodge in Terni, a city about 102 kilometers (63 miles) from Rome.

Several high-ranking Freemasons also helped inaugurate the new entrance of the three-story building on historic Via Roma di Terni, a road that has undergone extensive renovation with the addition of a second temple.

Instead of appreciating the prelate's presence, Bisi used his inaugural address to humiliate the Catholic Church by calling for the anti-papal event of Sept. 20, 1870, to be immortalized as a national holiday in Italy.

Papal rule over the Eternal City ended on that date, when the Italian army bombarded the city walls and entered through a breach in the wall near the Porta Pia.

Opus Dei leader to convene summit to comply with Pope Francis’s decrees

In the wake of recent changes decreed by Pope Francis, the leader of Opus Dei has announced that he’ll convene a special meeting in early 2023 to revise the group’s statutes in order to comply with the papal mandates.

Among other things, the pontiff decreed in July that from now on, the head of Opus will be a priest rather than a bishop, and also that Vatican supervision of the group will fall under the Dicastery for Clergy rather than the Dicastery for Bishops.

In political terms, many analysts have interpreted the changes as a “downgrade” in the group’s ecclesiastical standing, though Francis said the purpose is to protect its founding vision.

In an Oct. 6 note, Monsignor Fernando Ocáriz, prelate of Opus Dei, made clear the group plans to comply. He said members of their General Council and Central Advisory body are currently studying “how to carry out what the pope asked us” in terms of revising their statutes “to reflect changes ordered by the pope.”

The changes came in a motu proprio, meaning legislation issued on the pope’s own initiative, Ad Charisma Tuendum, dated July 14. Roughly translated as “For the protection of the charism,” the legislation is intended “to strengthen the conviction that, for the protection of the particular gift of the Spirit, a form of government based more on charism than on hierarchical authority is needed.”

Opus Dei was granted canonical status as the church’s first personal prelature by Pope John Paul II in 1982. Unlike a diocese or a territorial prelature, a personal prelature brings clergy and laity together for a specific purpose, although for the ordinary life of the church, laity remain members of their local diocese.

A personal prelature can also have its own priests and seminaries. At the moment Opus Dei is the lone personal prelature in the church, thoughFilipino bishopsare presently mulling whether to propose the creation of another to serveroughly 3 million Filipino workers around the world.

Opus Dei currently has roughly 93,400 members, some 2,300 of whom are priests incardinated in the prelature, and another 2,000 priests associated with the group but who remain attached to their dioceses.

In his letter Ocáriz, who was elected prelate of Opus Dei and approved by Pope Francis in 2017, said group leaders have been in contact with the Dicastery for Clergy and “have been advised not to limit ourselves to considering only what refers to the dependence of the prelature on this dicastery,” or the specific change requiring the prelature to report to the Holy See about their activities annually, rather than every five years.

Rather, “we should also propose other possible changes to the statutes that seem appropriate in light of the motu proprio,” Ocáriz said. “We have also been advised to spend as much time as necessary without any hurry.”

To this end, Ocáriz said he intends to convene an Extraordinary General Council in the first half of 2023 to discuss and introduce any potential changes to the prelature’s statutes reflecting the changes asked for by the pope.

Ocáriz invited members of Opus Dei with suggestions to send them “well in advance,” but cautioned that “it is a question of complying with what the Holy See has indicated, not of proposing any change that might seem interesting to us.”

“Along with the desire to be faithful to our founder’s legacy, it is important to keep in mind the good for everyone that the legal stability of an institution entails,” he said, saying the pope’s motu proprio is an opportunity to discuss other ideas “apart from what is related to the statutes,” in order to “give new impetus to the apostolic work.”

He invoked the intercession of Opus Dei founder Saint Josemaría Escrivá, asking God that “the charism God entrusted to our Father in the service of the church may bear fruit with renewed strength in the life of each one of us, as Pope Francis has urged us.”

VATICAN (ChurchMilitant.com) - Pope Francis wants Boston's Cdl. Seán O'Malley to remain president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors.

The news comes as the pope added 10 new members to the commission this past week, while retaining 10 others.

O'Malley's continued leadership role on the committee seems to contradict Pope Francis' zero-tolerance policy toward abuse.

"No abuse should ever be covered up, as was often the case in the past, or not taken sufficiently seriously, since the covering up of abuses favors the spread of evil and adds a further level of scandal," Francis proclaimed at the 2019 Vatican sexual abuse summit, formally known as the "Meeting on the Protection of Minors in the Church."

O'Malley's tolerance of a predator seems to contradict his 2021 remarks during the "Faith and Flourishing Strategies for Preventing and Healing Childhood Sexual Abuse" symposium.

"We all have a moral and legal obligation to as best possible provide protection and care for the people we serve, especially minors, young people, vulnerable adults in all religious, civic and social groups, and the people we serve rightfully expect that protection," he told more than 2,000 attendees.

Cardinal O'Malley is 78 years old, three years past the age at which he was required to submit his resignation to the pope, yet Pope Francis retains him in positions of authority.

Addressing a group of entrepreneurs from Spain in the Vatican's Consistory Hall, Pope Francis welcomed and greeted them, describing their presence as "a sign of hope".

During the audience with the "Confederación Española de Asociaciones de Jóvenes Empresarios" and the "Confederación de Empresarios de Galicias", he noted that we are living in an era with "well-known economic and social imbalances", adding that there is an urgent need to propose an adequate economy to help solve the major problems we are experiencing worldwide.

The Holy Father went on to express three ideas he considers relevant for their journey as entrepreneurs.

Be prophets

The first consideration he offered was "prophecy". Pope Francis explains that in the Bible, "the prophet is one who speaks on behalf of God, who conveys His message, through which they bring about change in the context in which they live."

In today's complex context, characterised by war and the environmental crisis, Pope Francis noted that "it is up to you to develop your service, let us say, as prophets who proclaim and build the common home, respecting all forms of life, caring for the good of all and promoting peace. Without prophecy, the economy, and all human action in general, is blind."

Work on your spiritual health

The second idea, Pope Francis continued, "relates to caring for one's relationship with God."

He explained that "just as the earth, when it is well cultivated and cared for" this relationship "bears abundant fruit". In this way, when we cultivate spiritual health and when we have a well-cared-for relationship with the Lord, "we begin to bear much good fruit."

Bearing that in mind, the Pope stressed that "the heroism that the world needs from you today can only be sustainable if you have strong roots."

Economic conversion will be possible when we experience a conversion of the heart, he added, as then, we will be able to "reverse the prejudicial actions that are preparing a bleak future for the new generations."

Do everything with love

The third and final thought "concerns work and poverty", said the Pope.

Upholding Saint Francis of Assisi as an example, Pope Francis reminded those present that all he did was done with the love he felt for the poor and with his austere way of life.

"With the values of work and poverty, which imply a complete trust in God and not in things, an economy can be created that reconciles the members of the different stages of production, without them despising each other, without creating more injustice or experiencing cold indifference," explained the Pope.

On the other hand, he stressed, "this does not mean that you love extreme poverty, which, on the contrary, must be combated, and to this end you have good tools, such as the possibility of creating jobs, and thus contribute to giving dignity to your neighbour."

Create an economy at the service of each human being

Bringing his discourse to a close, Pope Francis encouraged the entrepreneurs present to "continue to creatively transform the face of the economy, so that it may be more attentive to ethical principle" as well as to "not forget that its activity is at the service of the human being, not just of the few, but of all, especially the poor."

Finally, the Holy Father entrusted all those present to the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Joseph, who took care of the family and the home "with a parental heart".

The group will meet annually with Pope Francis and Cardinal Peter Turkson, who oversees the Vatican’s Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, according to a statement posted Tuesday.“An economic system that is fair, trustworthy, and capable of addressing the most profound challenges facing humanity and our planet is urgently needed,” the pope said in the statement. The newly created council will take on the challenge “by seeking ways to make capitalism become a more inclusive instrument for integral human wellbeing,” he said.

Despite global economic growth over the past few decades, business leaders have been slow to address the widespread disparities in wealth, race and gender. Under pressure from shareholders, customers and employees, they’ve started to confront those inequities.

For example, BlackRock Inc., the world’s largest asset manager, has said sustainability is a top investment priority, while Citigroup Inc. has vowed to spend $1 billion to help close the racial income gap. And last year, the Business Roundtable, which represents some of the largest U.S. corporations, said companies should consider all their stakeholders, not just generate profits for themselves and investors.

Members of the Vatican’s council include BP Plc Chief Executive Officer Bernard Looney, William Lauder of Estee Lauder Cos., Visa Inc. CEO Alfred Kelly, Fiona Ma, the treasurer for the state of California, and Mark Carney, the former governor of the Bank of England. Chiefs from companies, including Mastercard Inc. and Johnson & Johnson, and organizations such as the Rockefeller and Ford foundations also will sit on the council. Marcie Frost, CEO of the California Public Employees’ Retirement System, likens the council to the work done by Climate Action 100+, an initiative that seeks to put pressure on the world’s largest polluters. Prosecutions have produced evidence of FBI misconduct but no convictions.

A jury on Tuesday found Igor Danchenko, a primary source of the discredited Steele dossier, not guilty on all counts of allegedly lying to the FBI about his relationship with the sources for the Trump opposition research documents.

The trial was part of Special Counsel John Durham's investigation into the origins of the Trump-Russia collusion probe.

In Durham's only other trial in the investigation, former Clinton campaign attorney Michael Sussmann was found not guilty in June of making false statements to the FBI regarding the collusion probe.

The next step may be to await Durham's final report, assuming he's finished with prosecutions.

As Just the News Editor in Chief John Solomon recounted in a new story on both verdicts, the trials revealed a mountain of evidence of the FBI's stunning failures and misconduct in the politically tinged Trump-Russia probe.

However, with no convictions to show for it, Durham's ongoing investigation came under fire.

"The Durham probe has been a giant bust," read a CNN headline.

"Why John Durham's investigation has failed so spectacularly," added MSNBC.

Meanwhile, a Washington Post analysis said the "three-year effort to undercut the Russia probe comes up dry."

UK inquiry issues final report into 'epidemic' of child sexual abuse

The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse in England and Wales issues its final report after 7 years of investigations, noting a 'national epidemic' of abuse in government and religious institutions.

The Panel of the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) published its Final Report on Thursday, wrapping up 7 years of investigations into the scourge in various sectors of British society.

The in-depth inquiry into child sexual abuse in England and Wales began in July 2014, announced by British Home Secretary, Theresa May. In February 2015, the IICSA was formed as a statutory inquiry, granting it vast legal powers of subpoena and access to classified information.

The inquiry examined how the country’s institutions carried out their duty-of-care to protect children from sexual abuse, including the Catholic and Anglican Churches, schools, and healthcare facilities, along with government institutions.

In the Final Report, the IICSA lamented that child abuse is a national epidemic and estimated that 1 in 6 girls and 1 in 20 boys experience sexual abuse before the age of 16.

The report said that both institutions and politicians had put reputations before the welfare of children and covered up abuse cases for decades. It also noted that many institutions have yet to implement adequate safeguarding measures.

Speaking to reporters to announce the report, IICSA Chair Alexis Jay said the scale of the abuse uncovered by the inquiry was “shocking and deeply disturbing.”

"This is not just a historical aberration which happened decades ago, it is an ever-increasing problem and a national epidemic,” she said.

Commitment to safeguarding

Following its publication, the Catholic Council issued a statement welcoming the IICSA Final Report and highlighting its intention to study the report’s contents and recommendations.

The Catholic Council—set up by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales to comply with the investigation—also offered assurances that the Church will continue to seek to protect the vulnerable.

“In the work of safeguarding all who are members of, or come into contact with, the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales, at no point will the Church stop on its journey of dedicated effort in making the life and work of the Church safe for all.”

Listening to abuse survivors

The statement noted that the Church commissioned its own independent review ahead of the publication of the IICSA’s case study report into the Church’s safeguarding work, which was released in November 2020.

The Catholic Safeguarding Standards Agency (CSSA) started work in April 2021, and ensures that safeguarding standards are upheld in the Church in England and Wales.

The Church upheld its desire to listen to the voices of victims and survivors of abuse, calling it “an integral element in the development of this new agency.”

“The Church remains committed to listening with humility to those who have been hurt by the actions of Church members so that their experiences will inform our work.”

Apology and pledge to improve

In conclusion, the Catholic Council renewed its “unreserved apology” to people who have been hurt by abuse in the Church in England and Wales.

The Council also reaffirmed its “commitment to the continued refinement and improvement of our safeguarding work to protect all children and the vulnerable.”

Victim calls out Abp. Cordileone's 'betrayal'

SAN FRANCISCO (ChurchMilitant.com) - San Francisco's archbishop is honoring a cardinal who covered up sex abuse, and the victim is calling out his betrayal and complicity.

On Oct. 27, the archdiocese, headed by Abp. Salvatore Cordileone, has scheduled "An Evening to Congratulate Cardinal Robert McElroy," the San Diego prelate who recently received the red hat.

Rachel Maria Mastrogiacomo, who was ritually groomed and abused by a San Diego priest — whom Cdl. McElroy reinstated less than a year after he confessed to his abuse — is likening Abp. Cordileone's actions to "a stab wound to the heart" and "salt" in her wounds.

"[T]he betrayal by my friends hurt more than the abuse by my enemy, and Archbishop Cordileone's complicity feels like salt in that very wound," she wrote in an Oct. 18 Facebook post.

As Church Militant detailed in our Special Report: The Devil in Rome, Mastrogiacomo was targeted by Bertrand in Rome, where both were studying at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas.

Bertrand took advantage of her naïveté and charismatic background. Over the course of many months as her spiritual director, he groomed her using spiritual imagery and quoting the saints, convincing her that they were destined to be "mystically espoused."

Months after his priestly ordination in 2010, visiting her family home in Minnesota, Bertrand offered a private Mass in her basement, where he took sexual advantage of Mastrogiacomo.

He afterwards warned her to stay silent, paying her $1,000 in hush money and claiming it was meant to go towards her studies.

After the San Diego diocese learned of Bertrand's sexual misconduct in 2014, Bertrand confessed to the ritual abuse, leading to his suspension from ministry.

To this day, Cdl. McElroy has refused to acknowledge his actions in the Fr. Bertrand case

When McElroy was installed as bishop of San Diego in 2015, he almost immediately reinstated Bertrand to priestly ministry, assigning him to a new parish, where multiple sources confirm with Church Militant Bertrand continued his predatory grooming of young women.

It was only in 2016, once criminal charges for rape were brought against Bertrand, that McElroy suspended Bertrand. He pled guilty to rape in 2018, leading to his laicization.

To this day, McElroy has refused to acknowledge his actions in reinstating a known predator to ministry in 2015.

In fact, his spokesman, Kevin Eckery, distanced himself from McElroy's actions.

Aug. 15, 2022 email from Kevin Eckery,

spokesman for the diocese of San Diego, CA

"Jacob Bertrand was removed from ministry by the diocese and later laicized," he wrote in an Aug. 15, 2022 email. "We played no role and did not assist in his criminal defense. Beyond that, there is little more I can say."

Detailing a timeline of betrayal by those she trusted, Mastrogiacomo wrote, "First, of course, I was groomed and ritually raped by a Satanic priest. Second, Bishop McElroy protected him and covered up the dark crimes he committed against me."

After reporting her crimes, some of her own friends refused to support her, while Bertrand himself was able to escape jail time.

"And alas, seeing Francis put that red hat on top of McElroy's head on that dreadful Saturday in August felt like a global display of my nothingness," she continued, "a declaration to the whole world that 'Rachel Mastrogiacomo does not matter!' It was like I did not even exist."

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) -The Vatican panel due to produce annual reports on child abuse prevention within the Catholic Church will not deliver its first full review until 2024, its secretary said on Friday.

In April, after a wider constitutional overhaul of Vatican structures, Pope Francis gave the Pontifical Council for the Protection of Minors a mandate to produce the reports.

Clerical sex abuse and cover up scandals have rocked the 1.35 billion-member Catholic Church for decades, undercutting its moral authority and taking a toll on membership and coffers.

Greater transparency, new reporting procedures and tougher punishment for abusers and those who fail to go after them are part of Francis' stated "zero tolerance" response.

"Around October next year we'll have a good idea of what we want to say, (but) I don't think we're going to have data in place until the following year, 2024," said panel secretary Father Andrew Small.

Briefing reporters, he said the council, which has 20 lay and religious members including an advocate for abuse survivors, would issue a limited "blueprint" report in 2023.

Father Small said he was not sure "how much actionable data" it would have, whereas the 2024 report will have "evaluations of where there are gaps and holes and deficiencies."

Anne Barrett Doyle, co-director of BishopAccountability.org, a respected U.S.-based organisation that tracks abuse, complained that the Vatican commission was moving too slowly.

"That’s a long time for the public to wait before knowing where children are at risk of sexual abuse," she said about the 2024 publication date, in a statement to Reuters.

The Vatican panel is meant to supervise efforts by national Catholic churches to adapt to and enforce the new anti-child abuse provisions introduced in recent years.

Its remit does not extend to reviewing specific cases of abuse or cover up, though its report might include data on how many such cases are known to the Vatican's disciplinary office.

Barrett Doyle said this was a major deficiency.

"The commission is prohibited from examining individual cases. This will hobble them tremendously. How can they render meaningful judgment without access to the evidence," she said.

Francis established the commission in 2014, a year after his election, to promote best practices and a culture of safeguarding in Catholic communities worldwide.

The panel got off to a rocky start, with several members resigning in frustration, complaining that it had no teeth and that they had met internal resistance.

In March, the pope gave the commission stronger clout when a new Holy See constitution placed it inside the Vatican's doctrinal department, which rules on abuse cases.

Convert Sister Unveils Priests’ Rape of Nuns

Pope Francis does nothing as priests sexually abuse sisters in 22 nations

ROME (ChurchMilitant.com) - An African nun, who is a lecturer in anthropology at the Pontifical Gregorian University, is blowing the whistle on the widespread sexual abuse of nuns by predator priests.

In multiple interviews with French media in October, Sister Mary Lembo, a convert to Catholicism and the daughter of a Protestant pastor, is revealing the magnitude of the "rape, attacks and unwanted pregnancies" of nuns and its "possible systemic aspect."

A member of the congregation of the Sisters of St. Catherine of Alexandria, Sr. Lembo's doctoral thesis has been published under the title Religieuses Abusées en Afrique. Faire la Vérité (Abused Religious in Africa: Telling the Truth). 

The Togolese sister explains how a culture of extreme deference to the priest in sub-Saharan African society leads nuns to submit to whatever the priest demands "out of fear of God and out of fear of the priest who speaks in the name of God."

"What he asks, the sisters do," Lembo emphasizes. "The priest is a person of reference, a sage, a leader. He is the man of God, feared and respected."

Bishops Protect Predators

The sister narrates how she chose clerical sex abuse of nuns as the subject of her research after nuns confided in her while she was ministering as a psychotherapist and trainer for nuns and seminarians on issues of emotional and sexual maturity. 

"I said to them, 'If you are a nun, you say no! And if there was a skid, you put an end to it; you get up, and you move forward!'" the nun recollects. 

Most often, the bishops support the priests.

"But I understood that their evil came from further away, that they were victims of priests who sexually assaulted them, raped them within the framework of the pastoral relationship," Lembo reveals in an interview with La Vie. 

"Most often, the bishops support the priests. The laity spy on the movements of the nun; they know and say nothing. No one dares to say anything about the priest. In some communities, the superiors are not able to handle these situations," she discloses. 

It is always the abused nun who is blamed "for not being faithful to her commitment," Lembo tells La Croix. "Her community does not understand. All she has to do is shut up or leave." 

"The sexual abuse creates confusion, and the aggressor uses blackmail, threatens to reveal everything, and it is the nun who will be fired," she adds.

Devastating Consequences

While physical consequences include pregnancies, psychological consequences are equally devastating, with the abused nun facing "shame, guilt, sadness, anguish, confusion, revolt, isolation" and "the victim no longer having confidence in community and relational life."

The "spiritual consequences are abandonment of religious life, revolt against God, spiritual lukewarmness, ineffectiveness in the mission," Lembo laments. "They find it very difficult to pray, no longer want to hear about confession, no longer consider the priest as sacred."

Veiling Baltimore AG’s Abuse Report

Maryland's attorney general has a classified report on sex abuse by Catholic priests in Baltimore, and an anonymous group is seeking to keep it under lock and key.

Church Militant's Nadia Bullock looks at the court filings surrounding this curious situation.

The attorney general's office asked a judge to waive grand jury privilege so the report could be published, saying it is "vital to the public interest."

The report lists more than 600 abuse victims of at least 158 Catholic clerics and documents incidents spanning over eight decades. It also describes the archdiocese of Baltimore's efforts to cover up the abuse and its failure to act.

But on the17th,an anonymous group asked a judge to seal all the court proceedings. They claim there are people named in the report who are not publicly accused of abuse.

The attorneys representing the group are Gregg Bernstein and William J. Murphy.

Archbishop William Lori assigned Bernstein to a past abuse investigation.

There have been mixed signals coming from the archdiocese on whether or not it would support the publication of the report.

Tuesday its spokesman stated: "We are different — different than we were in the past — yet we must be transparent in acknowledging our past."

So the archdiocese is presently indicating it will not oppose the report's public release.

But the archdiocese doesn't fully agree with the report's contents, arguing the document fails to convey the "strong culture of child protection" that has been cultivated over the past three decades.

The AG's motion to make the report public included Fr. Brian Cox's history — without naming him.

In the '80s, he told a church official he was attracted to teenage boys. The official's reply? Not to worry about it.

Cox's case is being used as evidence as to why the report should become public.

The only two parties with access to the report are the AG's office and the archdiocese of Baltimore, so it's unclear how the anonymous group knows who's in the report.

Fr. Matthew Stafki accused of abusing 9-year-old girl

Father Matthew Stafki, a member of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX), is accused of molesting his 9-year-old niece. The abuse allegedly began in 2019 and lasted three years, until May of this year. 

According to the complaint (warning: explicit content), Stafki would visit the victim's home in Princeton and "would sometimes stay overnight." During his visits, he would touch the victim's breasts and genitals, kissing both areas.

"On one occasion, he told her to just enjoy the feeling of it," the complaint states. She remained silent about the abuse because the priest, her uncle, "told her more than once not to tell anyone."

The victim said one time Stafki had her "sit on top of him, facing him, and he would rub his genitals against hers." It continues:

She described one occasion when she was on top of the defendant and something slimy came out and onto her leggings. She stated on one occasion the defendant took off his pants and underwear and took her hand, trying to make her touch his genitals. Victim told him no and he put his clothes back on.

Victim stated the conduct happened multiple times and would usually end when someone knocked on the door to her room or the defendant heard someone come downstairs. Victim also stated the defendant showed her a video on his phone of a nude female rubbing against a nude male. She stated he showed her the video while they were laying on her bed.

According to a credible source who spoke with Church Militant, the victim finally broke down and told her father about the abuse over the summer. The father, Stafki's brother, confronted Stafki, who confessed "he had given into lust and had been doing things he shouldn't do."

Some Catholic priests ran their own private armies,[17] and there were forced conversions and looting, shelling, and demolition of pagodas in some areas, to which the government turned a blind eye.[18] Some Buddhist villages converted en masse to receive aid or avoid being forcibly resettled by Diệm's regime.[19] The "private" status that was imposed on Buddhism by the French, which required official permission to be obtained by those wishing to conduct public Buddhist activities, was not repealed by Diệm.[20] Catholics were also de facto exempt from corvée labor, which the government obliged all citizens to perform, and United States aid was distributed disproportionately to Catholic majority villages by Diệm's regime.[21]

A colleague emptied the contents of the petrol container over Quảng Đức's head. Quảng Đức rotated a string of wooden prayer beads and recited the words Nam mô A Di Đà Phật ("Homage to Amitābha Buddha") before striking a match and dropping it on himself. Flames consumed his robes and flesh, and black oily smoke emanated from his burning body.[26][27]

He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture.

The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy.

Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism.

In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

Doctors are sharing research they claim proves the COVID jabs, without a doubt, are not safe — something the bishops still haven't picked up on.

Cardiologist Aseem Malhotra supported the COVID vax when it first was rolled out, but after his vaxxed father's sudden death, and after doing thorough research, he's preaching the opposite.

A short video documentary discussing Dr. Malhotra's and Dr. Peter McCullough's research was published in early November, warning of the jab's side effects.

Peter McCullough, M.D., cardiologist: "Two hundred papers showing that myocarditis causes heart damage and a scar. And then the scar becomes the basis for cardiac arrhythmia. And then the arrhythmia is responsible for the sudden death that we're seeing."

Almost all the COVID jabs are linked to aborted fetal cell lines. And yet, in the last couple of years, the hierarchy around the world has encouraged their use.

In 2020, English bishops said Catholics have "a prima facie duty to be vaccinated" based on the government's assurance that no new human tissue will be used in vaccine development.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said the lack of alternative vaccines justified the use of the Pfizer and Moderna ones.

In mid-2021, bishops in France and Italy were endorsing a state-sponsored vaccine apartheid, as thousands protested in the streets.

And at the beginning of this year, Catholics petitioned against the bishops in Slovakia for vetoing the right of the faithful to conscientiously object to the jab. 

Early in the vax rollout, it was ambiguous as to whether jabs like the one produced by Pfizer were linked to aborted fetal cells. A Project Veritas report verified that the company was covering up that truth.

But even with the ambiguity, it was possible to take a stand against it. Bishop Joseph Strickland did early on — saying he would never get the immoral jab and discouraging his flock from doing so.

Catholics shouldn't be surprised though. The same bishops who support the abortion-tainted jab are the ones who won't condemn fake-Catholic Biden for his pro-abortion beliefs.

And just last week, Biden unveiled a six-week campaign to give more Americans the clot shot by the end of the year.

At least Dr. Malhotra was able to recognize his error, unlike the bishops.

On Tuesday, The Vaccine Safety Research Foundation is hosting a dinner in Dallas for Drs. Malhotra and McCullough. It's meant to be an evening of discovery and conversation around the jabs.

Survivors of clergy sexual abuse in CA are urged to come forward before the Dec. 31 deadline to file a lawsuit.

SAN FRANCISCO – Sixty-six Catholic clergy members accused of child sexual assault have been identified in 116 lawsuits filed in Alameda County under the California Child Victims Act, the law firm of Jeff Anderson & Associates revealed Tuesday.

The public data collected is believed to be a small percentage of what attorneys and advocates anticipate the final number of lawsuits filed to be.

"Because we do not know the current location of these accused perpetrators, if they are dead or alive, and whether they have access to children, there is a great public risk," said attorney Mike Finnegan. "We are urging the public to help us in any way they can. If you know anything about these newly accused perpetrators, contact law enforcement."

All alleged perpetrators identified have been publicly identified in lawsuits filed in the Alameda County Court system under the Child Victims Act. These allegations should not yet be considered proven or substantiated in a court of law.

Baltimore archdiocese is funding attorneys seeking to seal abuse proceedings

The Archdiocese of Baltimore confirmed Tuesday that it is helping pay the legal expenses of an anonymous group of people seeking to seal the proceedings around a report by the Maryland Attorney General’s Office on clergy sexual abuse of minors.

Christian Kendzierski, an archdiocese spokesman, reiterated that the church is not seeking to suppress a 456-page report by the office of Attorney General Brian E. Frosh. But, Kendzierski said, the church has unspecified obligations to a group of individuals who are named in the attorney general’s report but are not accused of sexual abuse and who have argued that their side should be heard before the report is made public.

“We stated last week we are supporting some of the individuals,” Kendzierski said, referring to a lengthy statement the archdiocese issued Nov. 22. In it, the archdiocese said it “may” be paying some of the legal fees. The Baltimore Sun first confirmed Monday that the archdiocese was footing some of the bill.

Lawyers ask for secrecy surrounding possible release of Maryland attorney general report on church sex abuse

The report, according to a court filing earlier this month, followed a nearly four-year investigation and tallied more than 600 young victims and 158 abusive priests over 80 years in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Forty-three of those priests previously had not been identified in public.

Dioceses’ ways of organizing such lists vary. Baltimore Archbishop William E. Lori said the archdiocese’s own list of 152 accused clergy “does not include the names of priests or brothers who died before a single accusation of child abuse was received, unless the allegation could be corroborated by a third party or unless a second allegation was made against the same deceased cleric.”

The group of individuals seeking to seal proceedings around the report, and potentially the report itself — represented by attorneys William J. Murphy and Gregg L. Bernstein — have also asked the Circuit Court for Baltimore City to air their concerns and reveal their identities only in closed proceedings.

Frosh’s office suggested that the church’s financial backing of the litigants was more self-serving than the archdiocese was letting on.

“It’s clear that they are paying to oppose the release of the report,” spokeswoman Raquel Coombs said.

The archdiocese has cooperated with Frosh’s office since January 2019, turning over more than 100,000 pages of documents. Earlier this month, Frosh went to court seeking permission to release a public report on the findings of his investigation, which is based on confidential grand jury proceedings.

Bernstein, who did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment, has worked with Lori and other local clergy in the past.

In 2002, Bernstein represented a former Catholic priest “who faced claims of wrongdoing after admitting a decade earlier to sexually abusing six children.”

In 2018, he led a team picked by Lori to investigate Michael J. Bransfield, a former West Virginia bishop who used his position to engage in sexual and financial abuses. The investigation found that Bransfield gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to fellow clergymen, among them Lori, and the West Virginia diocese reimbursed him to cover the gifts.

Bernstein’s team removed Lori’s name from the report at his request. The archbishop said he would return the money Bransfield gave him and, he asked that it be donated to Catholic Charities.

Earlier this month, Lori was elected by his fellow bishops to be vice president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops for the next three years.

When the Vatican on Nov. 26 issued a public criticism of the Chinese government's transfer of a Catholic bishop to a diocese not recognized by the Holy See, it was the first time the Vatican explicitly challenged the Chinese government since entering into a bilateral agreement in 2018 over the appointment of bishops in the country. For some human rights advocates and religious freedom experts, they hope this noted shift in Rome's posture toward Beijing is one that will continue. 

"The China of 2018 is far different from the China of 2022," observed Stephen Schneck, a commissioner of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom. Schneck believes it is time for the Vatican to reconsider its approach to China, one that traces its origins to Pope John Paul II.

"Originally, it looked like a savvy move to restore the possibility of appointing bishops in China, which are so badly needed," Schneck said of the Vatican's 2018 agreement. "I would go so far as to say that originally it was a good plan. It was worth taking those experimental steps."

"Now things have changed under [Chinese President] Xi [Jinping]," Schneck told NCR. "It's no longer the China that the Holy See dealt with initially in this regard." He described increased governmental efforts to nationalize both public and private religious spaces for people of all faith traditions.

While the specifics of the 2018 Vatican-China agreement have never been made public, the accord broadly outlines the procedures for selecting bishops for the country that are approved by the Holy See ahead of the ordination.

Despite the agreement, however, experts have warned that the situation for the country's estimated 10 million-12 million Catholics has seemingly deteriorated, with church demolitions and crackdowns against Catholic priests.

But perhaps no one has become more symbolic of what is at stake for the country's Catholics — and the fate of the Vatican's China agreement — than retired Hong Kong Cardinal Joseph Zen.

At age 90, Zen was arrested in May for charges related to failing to register a now-defunct charitable fund to support individuals arrested in Hong Kong's pro-democracy protests in 2019. On Nov. 25, a Hong Kong court found Zen, and five others, guilty and fined him the equivalent of just over US$500.

2018 Holy See–China Agreement

In January 2018, the Church was close to negotiating a deal with China that allows China to have more control over the underground churches and allows the Vatican to have more control over the appointment of bishops. While this did not amount to the establishment of formal diplomatic ties, this was seen as a huge step towards formal recognition.[20] However, Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun, the former Bishop of Hong Kong, regarded the warming of diplomatic relationships as selling out the Catholic Church in China, as the process involves the resignation of several bishops of the underground church.[21][22] A vigil was held by the Justice and Peace Commission of the Hong Kong Catholic Diocese in response from 12 to 13 February in St Bonaventure Church.[23]

On 22 September 2018, the Chinese government and the Vatican signed a historic agreement concerning the appointment of bishops in China.[24] China's foreign ministry said that the agreement works to maintain communications and improve relations between the parties.[24] They did not establish diplomatic relations and the Vatican maintained diplomatic ties with the Republic of China on Taiwan,[25] which the People's Republic of China does not recognize. Vatican spokesman Greg Burke described the agreement as "not political but pastoral, allowing the faithful to have bishops who are in communion with Rome but at the same time recognized by Chinese authorities."[24][26] While the agreement states that China will recommend bishops before they are appointed by the pope,[26] it also stipulates that the pope has authority to veto a bishop China recommends.[27] Francis then approved seven bishops who had been appointed by Beijing, after withdrawing Church censures against those six and one recently deceased bishop, who had all received episcopal consecration without papal approval.[28][29] On 23 September, the Catholic Church in China pledged to remain loyal to the Chinese Communist Party.[30] On 26 September, in a letter to Chinese Catholics, Pope Francis wrote:[31]

KRAKÓW, Poland (ChurchMilitant.com) - According to damning documents from the Polish national archives, Pope John Paul II helped predator priests evade punishment while he was archbishop of Kraków.

Canonized as a saint by Pope Francis in 2014, Cdl. Karol Józef Wojtyła transferred priests accused of sex abuse, including the notorious serial predator Fr. Eugeniusz Surgent, a three-year investigation by Dutch journalist Ekke Overbeek has revealed. 

Even after abuser priests were sentenced to prison, Wojtyła allowed them to continue working in another diocese after release, as in the case of Fr. Surgent, who worked in two other dioceses after leaving prison.

Damning Correspondence

Church Militant has obtained a translation of Wojtyła's letter (see picture) "lifting the suspension" imposed on another priest, Fr. Józef Loranc. The letter stated that Loranc was being transferred to Holy Family parish in Zakopane — after he was sentenced to two years in prison for sex crimes and released conditionally after serving half of his sentence. 

Loranc served in the archdiocese of Kraków until his death in 1992. While teaching catechism at a parish, he "chose the prettiest girls from grades 1 to 5" and compelled them to perform oral sex on him while playing hide-n-seek, covering the child with his cassock or coat. 

They were in a great hurry to canonize John Paul II.

Wojtyła withdrew only "the canonical mission to catechize children and youth" from Fr. Loranc after reinstating him, according to the then-archbishop's letter of Sept. 27, 1971. The letter survived only because it was intercepted and copied by the secret police and later preserved in the national archives.

"I found concrete cases of priests who abused children in the archdiocese of Kraków where the future pope was archbishop," Overbeek told Dutch media Nieuwsuur on Saturday. "Even convicted perpetrators were allowed to continue working in other dioceses."

Even though documents directly concerning Abp. Wojtyła's handling of sex abuse cases have "almost all been destroyed," the archbishop "is mentioned very often in other documents that have survived," the journalist explained. 

He wasn't part of the solution; he was part of the problem.

"And if you put them all together, they are puzzle pieces that form the picture of how he handled that child abuse by priests," Overbeek maintained. 

Experts Confirm Authenticity

Cultural anthropologist and former Jesuit Dr. Stanisław Obirek, currently a humanities professor at the University of Warsaw, told Church Militant that he had seen and confirmed the documentary evidence as "authentic." 

Obirek, known for his work on Jesuits in Poland and Lithuania from 1564 to 1668, explained that the archives are maintained by the Instytut Pamięci Narodowej (Institute of National Remembrance) and "largely used as an authentic material for Polish history in the communist period."

Church Militant asked Obirek why the documents recently discovered were not taken into consideration during the beatification and canonization procedures for Pope John Paul II. 

"As far as I know, many materials were not used when Pope John Paul II was being considered for sainthood. It was simply impossible, given the tempo of the canonization process," Professor Obirek replied. 

"They were in a great hurry to canonize John Paul II. And now, you see facts emerging from those Polish archives that are very incriminating and can, therefore, actually cast doubt on his sainthood," the professor told Nieuwsuur.

"This kind of material, the same sources, are still used in Polish politics today. Nobody rejects this kind of evidence," Obirek added.

"We now know that Wojtyła actively covered up pedophile crimes committed by priests under his jurisdiction. That's a new chapter, a first step. We'll see how the Church will react," the professor told Church Militant, reiterating his comments to Nieuwsuur.

American canon lawyer Fr. Thomas Doyle, who, in 1985, coauthored the confidential 95-page report "The Problem of Sexual Molestation by Roman Catholic Clergy," noted that the revelations would "turn the previous image of Pope John Paul II upside down." 

"What I read is explosive," Doyle told Nieuwsuur. "He wasn't part of the solution; he was part of the problem. He didn't do anything."

Bishops' Deflection

Polish bishops have refused to comment on the reports. When asked for his response, Pawel Rytel-Andrianik, the director of foreign communications at the Polish bishops' conference, told a Catholic media agency that "it's not my responsibility."
