Leonid Meteors Through Orion

Where will the next meteor appear? Even during a meteor shower, it is practically impossible to know. Therefore, a good way to enjoy a meteor shower is to find a place where you can sit comfortably and monitor a great expanse of dark sky. And it may be satisfying to share this experience with a friend. The meteor shower depicted was the 2022 Leonids which peaked earlier this month, and the view is from Hainan, China looking out over the South China Sea. Meteor streaks captured over a few hours were isolated and added to a foreground image recorded earlier. From this place and time, Leonid meteors that trace back to the constellation of Leo were seen streaking across other constellations including Orion. The bright red planet Mars appears near the top of the image. Bonding over their love of astronomy, the two pictured meteor enthusiasts, shown celebrating their common birthday this month, are now married.

I had a bout of sleep paralysis last night that woke me up enough to look at the clock.

Of course, it was 1:07 am.

Nasa astronaut reveals what ‘most accurately describes’ aliens and claims the author of unusual book got it ‘spot on’

A NASA astronaut has revealed the one book he thinks most accurately describes aliens.

Astronaut Stan Love has exclusively discussed aliens with The U.S. Sun and explained why he thinks we haven't found them yet.

He told The U.S. Sun: "There is one science fiction novel, that I think gets this right, which is Solaris by Stanisław Lem and I think that handles extraterrestrial intelligence better than any other science fiction work I’ve seen.

"It’s absolutely incomprehensible to people and people are incomprehensible to it.

He added: "Read it. Don’t see the movies. The movies are about people, they’re not about the aliens, the book is about the aliens."

Love is a 57-year-old American scientist and astronaut who joined Nasa in 1998 and went on his first spaceflight on Space Shuttle Atlantis in 2008.

He's logged over 300 hours in space but hasn't seen any signs of intelligent life around Earth yet.

Despite Nasa now officially investigating unexplained UFO sightings, Love doesn't believe intelligent aliens life has come to visit our planet.

He thinks the events described in the 1961 science fiction novel Solaris describe aliens better than any other current theory.

He said: "That’s the closest theory I’d agree with so far.

"We can’t even understand each other sometimes and we’re the same species.

"Then when you get to different species on Earth that are also intelligent, there’s this huge barrier and then if you get to aliens with no connection with us whatsoever, it would be hard for us to recognize that they are intelligent."

The plot of Solaris follows a team of scientists trying to understand alien intelligence.

The alien in question is a vast sentient ocean on a planet called Solaris.

The scientists end up learning nothing about the ocean but a great deal about themselves.

World’s Largest Active Volcano ‘Mauna Loa’ in Hawaii Erupts for First Time in Nearly 40 Years

Authorities in Hawaii announced on Monday that Mauna Loa, the world’s largest active volcano, has begun erupting for the first time since 1984, sending volcanic ash and debris raining down in the nearby area.

An eruption began in the summit caldera of Mauna Loa, known as Moku’weoweo, at roughly 11:30 p.m. HST, according to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. For the time being, the eruption is contained at the peak and poses no danger.

“The Observatory has increased the Volcano Alert Level from “advisory” to “warning,” with aviation alert upgraded to “red.” Some ash and volcanic glass fibers may become airborne and blow downwind,” the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (EMA) reported.

Honolulu’s National Weather Service has issued an Ashfall Advisory for all of Hawai‘i island until 6 a.m. HST Monday.

“Up to a quarter-inch of ash is expected around and downwind of Mauna Loa. People with breathing difficulties should stay indoors, and cover nose/mouth with cloth or a mask.”

Read the statement below from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory Status Report:

The eruption continues at the summit of Mauna Loa. All vents remain restricted to the summit area. However, lava flows in the summit region are visible from Kona. There is currently no indication of any migration of the eruption into a rift zone.

The Volcano Alert Level and Aviation Color Code for Mauna Loa remains at WARNING/RED.

HVO is continuing to monitor conditions carefully and will issue additional notices as needed.
