Hawaii’s Mauna Loa, world’s largest active volcano, starts to erupt for first time in nearly four decades

The world’s largest active volcano, Hawaii’s Mauna Loa, has started to erupt for the first time in nearly four decades, prompting volcanic ash and debris to fall nearby, authorities said Monday.
The eruption began at approximately 11:30 p.m. Sunday in Moku‘āweoweo, the summit caldera of the Mauna Loa volcano, inside Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island.
As of 2:43 a.m. local time, "the eruption continues at the summit of Mauna Loa," according to the latest Hawaiian Volcano Observatory Status Report from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). "All vents remain restricted to the summit area," the report said. "However, lava flows in the summit region are visible from Kona. There is currently no indication of any migration of the eruption into a rift zone."
A rift zone is where the mountain is splitting apart, the rock is cracked and relatively weak and is easier for magma to emerge, according to the Associated Press.
"The Volcano Alert Level and Aviation Color Code for Mauna Loa remains at WARNING/RED,"the update added. "HVO is continuing to monitor conditions carefully and will issue additional notices as needed."
The USGS warned that residents at risk from Mauna Loa lava flows should review their eruption preparations. Scientists had been on alert because of a recent spike in earthquakes at the summit of the volcano, which last erupted in 1984.
Portions of the Big Island were under an ashfall advisory issued by the National Weather Service in Honolulu, which said up to a quarter-inch of ash could accumulate in some areas.
Mauna Loa is one of five volcanoes that together make up the Big Island of Hawaii, which is the southernmost island in the Hawaiian archipelago.
Mauna Loa, rising 13,679 feet above sea level, is the much larger neighbor to Kilauea volcano, which erupted in a residential neighborhood and destroyed 700 homes in 2018. Some of its slopes are much steeper than Kilauea’s so when it erupts, its lava can flow much faster.
During a 1950 eruption, the mountain’s lava traveled 15 miles to the ocean in less than three hours.
Mauna Loa last erupted for 20 days between March and April 1984. That means the new eruption that started Sunday night ended the volcano’s longest quiet period in recorded history.
"Based on past events, the early stages of a Mauna Loa eruption can be very dynamic and the location and advance of lava flows can change rapidly," the USGS said Sunday night. "If the eruption remains in Moku‘āweoweo, lava flows will most likely be confined within the caldera walls. However, if the eruptive vents migrate outside its walls, lava flows may move rapidly downslope."

Who Is Lotta Volkova? Stylist Linked to Balenciaga, Kanye West

Fashion's "fave it girl" Lotta Volkova has been dragged into the Balenciaga drama after photoshoots posted to her Instagram were unearthed featuring mutilation, satanic themes and violence.
Described as the "coolest stylist in the industry" by Vogue and given the 'it girl' moniker by Dazed, Volkova has worked with some of the biggest names in fashion, including Balenciaga and Jean Paul Gaultier.
But now some of her work has been called into question amid Balenciaga's "child porn" controversy.
One image showed a woman lying on a pentagram as a satanic figure looms ==over her, while another showed a woman dead on her side in a field with her stomach ripped open and entrails sprawling onto the grass beneath her.
A third photo seemed to be a vintage-styled men's bedroom but was covered in blood with bullets and broken glass strewn across the floor.
Finally, the fourth image London shared was a child holding up skull within a frame of the star sign symbols from the astrological chart.
Born in 1984, Volkova grew up in Vladivostok in Russia and started her first fashion label, a jeanswear company called Lotta Skeletrix,when she was 19 years old.
She had moved to London two years earlier to study fashion at the Central Saint Martins college.
The Russian soon left design behind her and turned her attention to styling, which is when her career took off.
Volkova styled for major publications such as Dazed & Confused Japan, and Harper's Bazaar Russia, before starting her own eponymous fashion label.
But it was when she teamed up with Demna Gvasalia, creative director of Balenciaga and co-founder of Vetements that Volkova became the darling of the fashion world.
She worked closely with Gvasalia on styling at Balenciaga, but was also in charge of "the casting, the styling and… also consulting Demna with the collection," Volkova told 032c magazine in 2016.
That year, the pair faced controversy for casting all white models in the Balenciaga and Vetements autumn/winter runway shows. At the time, Volkova said she found the criticism of their casting choices as "shocking."
"Those were some shocking allegations for us. We cast certain characters for certain looks and felt we were paying a lot of attention to diversity," Volkova told 032c.
"We had Russian gay people in the casting, people from so many different cultural backgrounds. But I take this as a challenge now to pay more attention for the future. Not because I want to be politically correct, but because I don't want to offend anyone."
The pair had also caught the attention of Ye—then known as Kanye West— who tweeted in 2016, "I'm going to steal Demna from Balenciaga," for his Yeezy collaboration with Adidas.
Volkova and Gvasalia would go on to work closely with the rapper, whom Balenciaga had picked up as an ambassador. They released a major collaboration with Gap in 2022. co-developed by Gvasalia and Ye.
But Ye was dropped by Adidas and Balenciaga in October after a string of antisemitic tweets, where he wrote that he was "going death con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE."
