ROME — Pope Francis is urging Christians to spend less on Christmas this year and to send the savings to the people of Ukraine.

“There is so much suffering in Ukraine, so much, so much!” the pontiff told the crowds gathered in the Vatican for his weekly General Audience Wednesday.

“I would like to draw some attention to the coming Christmas, even the parties,” he said. “It’s nice to celebrate Christmas, to have parties… but let’s lower the level of Christmas spending a bit.”

The pope went on to suggest that the money saved on the more commercial side to Christmas could be redirected to the suffering people of Ukraine.

“Let’s have a humbler Christmas, with more humble gifts,” he proposed. “We send what we save to the Ukrainian people, who are in need, who suffer so much.”

“They are hungry, they feel the cold and many die because there are no doctors or nurses at hand,” he said.

“Let us not forget: a Christmas, yes; at peace with the Lord, yes, but with Ukrainians in our hearts. And let’s make that concrete gesture for them,” he concluded.

China Reports New Omicron Variant Spreading in 9 Provinces, Populace Fearful, Mortuaries Overwhelmed

COVID-19 cases have been increasing in China, since the ruling communist regime eased its “zero-COVID” restrictions on Dec. 7. Netizens have been reporting that hospitals and mortuaries are being overwhelmed by demand, particularly in nine provinces where the relatively new Omicron subvariants BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 have been reported to be spreading quickly.

On Dec. 14, China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention announced for the first time that 49 cases of BQ.1 had been found in nine Chinese provinces, as well as cases of BQ.1.1. However, the authorities didn’t identify which provinces were the ones affected.

BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 are descendants of the Omicron variant BA.5, which was first detected by scientists in South Africa in April. They started taking over BA.5 as the dominant COVID-19 strains in the United States in October and have been detected in more than 50 countries.

Just days earlier on Dec. 12, the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP’s) official media “People’s Daily” reported, citing Chinese experts, that the strains spreading in China were still Omicron BA.5.2 and BF.7. According to the report, most cases in Guangzhou were BA.5.2, with a high proportion of asymptomatic patients due to milder clinical condition than BF.7, which was said to be the cause of most of the infections in Beijing, which has been experiencing more severe cases.

But the Dec. 14 announcement has stirred distrust and fear in Beijing, made worse by the many claims on social media of residents experiencing allegedly more severe symptoms unlike the typical cold-like symptoms associated with previous Omicron variants.

Texas Governor Seeks Probe of NGOs for Alleged Migrant ‘Illegal Border Crossing’ Assistance

Texas Governor Greg Abbott called on the attorney general to open an investigation into non-government organizations or NGOs who may have assisted in migrant border crossings into the state. The move comes after record-setting large group crossings around El Paso over the weekend.

“There have been recent reports that non-governmental organizations may have assisted with illegal border crossings near El Paso,” Governor Abbott wrote in a letter to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. “We further understand NGOs may be engaged in unlawfully orchestrating other border crossings through activities on both sides of the border, including in sectors other than El Paso. In light of these reports, I am calling on the Texas Attorney General’s Office to initiate an investigation into the role of NGOs in planning and facilitating the illegal transportation of illegal immigrants across our borders.”

The governor’s call comes as the expected end of the Title 42 coronavirus protection protocol looms next week. In advance of the program’s ending, groups of more than 2,400 migrants per day crossed over the past weekend, Breitbart Texas reported. One of those groups consisted of more than 1,000 who crossed overnight on Sunday.

In addition to the crossings into El Paso, more than 11,000 crossed into the Del Rio Sector during the past week. Another 3,200 migrants got away without being apprehended.

The governor alleges that NGOs may have a role “in planning and assisting illegal border crossings into Texas.”

“The end of Title 42 in the coming weeks is expected to cause a dramatic increase in the number of illegal immigrants crossing America’s southern border beyond the all-time high levels currently reported,” the governor’s office said in a statement.

One NGO, the Border Network for Human Rights, responded to the governor’s call for an investigation calling it a personal attack on El Paso, an abuse of power, and a “racist distortion of what’s happening on the border,” El Paso Matters reported.

“What is very concerning is that now by the statement itself, he’s attempting to criminalize not just immigrants, but humanitarian work in Texas,” Director Fernando Garcia told the local news outlet.

Arizona Sued By Biden Administration For Trying To Curb Illegal Immigration With Makeshift Border

The Biden Administration is taking Arizona to court over the makeshift border wall Republican Gov. Doug Ducey has constructed in the wake of historic levels of illegal immigration on the southern border.

The suit filed Wednesday pertains to the placement of shipping containers along the border that the Biden Administration argues trespasses on federal lands, according to the Associated Press.

“Not only has Arizona refused to halt its trespasses and remove the shipping containers from federal lands, but it has indicated that it will continue to trespass on federal lands and install additional shipping containers. As a result, the United States brings this action to obtain appropriate relief for Arizona’s unlawful continuing trespasses and invasions of the United States’ paramount sovereign property rights and interests under the U.S. Constitution,” the lawsuit claimed according to Fox News.

Ducey sued the Biden Administration in October for its failure to protect the southern border, maintaining that the State of Arizona had a right to defend itself as it could not “rely on the federal government to ensure its security,” Fox News reported.

“The safety and security of Arizona and its citizens must not be ignored. Arizona is going to do the job that Joe Biden refuses to do — secure the border in any way we can. We’re not backing down,” Ducey said at the time, according to Fox News.

As the year comes to a close, Ducey will have to step aside for Democratic Gov.-elect Katie Hobbs who has already spoken out against the make-shift border wall and has vowed to remove it, the outlet added.

TIME Person of the Year – Ukrainian President Zelensky Just Shut Down Court that Investigates Corruption

TIME’s Person of the Year, President Volodymyr Zelensky, is praised for liquidating a Kyiv anti-corruption court.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hailed his dissolution on Tuesday of a Kyiv court as evidence Ukraine can fight to end a history of corruption and Russia’s invasion at the same time.

“This story has drawn to a close,” he said as he announced he had signed a law liquidating the Kyiv District Administrative Court, which Ukrainian anti-corruption authorities had compared to a criminal organization and whose chairman was hit with U.S. sanctions Dec. 9.

“But the story of reforms continues – it continues, even in the time of such a war,” Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address.

He signed the law the same day it was passed by Ukraine’s parliament, in a nod to extensive judiciary and other reforms needed for Ukraine to join the European Union.

Pavlo Vovk, the court’s chairman, said in a Facebook post that the decision to eliminate the court was purely political, made in haste and one that “those who applaud it today will soon regret.”

The U.S. State Department said Washington was imposing sanctions on Vovk “for soliciting bribes in return for interfering in judicial and other public processes,” and designated two of his immediate family members at the same time.

To date, Zelensky has outlawed a Ukrainian church and the opposition party. No doubt that the party that voted in the article above did not include any opposition.

Removal of Criminal Illegal Immigrants Arrested by Local Police Drops 71% Under Biden

Besides smashing a record for apprehending a ghastly 2.4 million illegal immigrants along the Mexican border last year, the Biden administration is also making history for drastically slashing the number of criminal aliens that get deported. In its first nine months the administration removed 71% fewer criminal aliens arrested by local police compared to a comparable period in 2019 under President Donald Trump. Overall deportations also declined under Biden from 186,000 in fiscal year 2020 to 59,000 the following year, according to government data provided to the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). The Washington D.C.-based nonprofit is the nation’s only think tank devoted exclusively to the research of U.S. immigration policy and has issued a multitude of informative reports over the years.

This month the nonpartisan group published the findings of its analysis of state and local statistics involving illegal aliens removed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in fiscal years 2019 through 2021. The records include migrants identified by ICE with a biometric match under the Secure Communities program, which uses a federal information-sharing partnership between the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to identify aliens in custody without imposing additional requirements on state and local law enforcement. ICE uses fingerprint matching to flag illegal immigrants arrested by local police for state crimes and the agency removes individuals who present significant threats to public safety as determined by the severity of their crime and criminal history, according to ICE’s Secure Communities website. The agency stresses that “the federal government, not the state or local law enforcement agency, determines what immigration enforcement action, if any, is appropriate.”

Under Biden the number has nose-dived. Besides the 71% drop in removals of deportable aliens that came to ICE’s attention after a local criminal arrest, deportations of convicted felons also fell 25% from 36,000 in fiscal year 2020 to 27,000 in fiscal year 2021. CIS found that 51 jurisdictions “experienced acute declines” with criminal removals dipping an unbelievable 90%. Ten states—Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Vermont—saw an “extreme decline in enforcement” of over 80% under Biden, the CIS report says, adding that of the 50 American counties that typically have the highest criminal alien removals 14 experienced the extreme 80-plus percent drop under Biden. About a third of the “high-volume counties” are in Texas, according to the figures obtained by CIS. One of them, Howard County in the state’s western region, is singled out as an example of the public safety implications of the Biden enforcement policies. “It is reasonable to conclude from these statistics that under the Biden policies, ICE is knowingly taking a pass on removing most deportable criminal aliens who have come to their attention after arrest in Howard County, and even knowingly taking a pass on some of the deportable criminal aliens who were convicted of serious or violent crimes in Howard County,” CIS writes in its report. “As a result, Howard County likely is experiencing some degree of repeated crime from those criminal aliens who continue to offend and victimize community members after ICE declined to take action to remove them.”

Researchers at the immigration think tank conclude that the public safety consequences of the Biden interior enforcement policies experienced in Howard County are undoubtedly occurring in hundreds of other jurisdictions around the nation. “State and local authorities should keep track of cases of criminal aliens who are not removed by ICE and bring these cases to the attention of ICE leadership, members of Congress, and the public,” according to CIS. “In addition, through appropriations or otherwise, the new Congress should clarify its expectations with respect to immigration enforcement in the interior, particularly involving criminal aliens, certain of whom are subject to mandatory arrest and detention under the Immigration and Nationality Act.”

NSW Health urges people to throw out Riviera Farms spinach from Costco after nine people across Sydney hospitalised

At least nine people from four separate households across Sydney have needed medical attention after eating packaged fresh spinach, believed to be accidentally contaminated, according to New South Wales Health.

People are being urged to throw out any packets of Riviera Farms-brand spinach, sold through retailer Costco, with an expiry date of December 16 this year.

NSW Health said the product was "not safe to consume and people who have it should throw it out".

It has urged anyone who has experienced any unusual and severe symptoms after eating the spinach to seek immediate medical attention by visiting their nearest emergency department due to toxic reactions.

State health authorities said some of the reported symptoms have been severe and include "hallucinations, delirium, rapid heartbeat and blurred vision".

A Riviera Farms spokesperson said the product may have been "contaminated with a weed which can have health consequences if consumed".

"As soon as we were advised of the possible weed contamination from one of our customers, we immediately advised them to remove our impacted spinach from their shelves, and contacted state health and federal food authorities," the spokesperson said.

"There is no suggestion, and to our knowledge no possibility, that any other products have been impacted by this weed.

"Riviera Farms has been in the business of providing fresh food since the 1880s, and we are saddened to confirm that we have likely had our first-ever significant contamination incident."

NSW Health said it does not yet know the full extent of the product's distribution and is working with the NSW Food Authority, as well as other jurisdictions, to investigate the contamination further.
