ROME — Pope Francis is urging Christians to spend less on Christmas this year and to send the savings to the people of Ukraine.

China Reports New Omicron Variant Spreading in 9 Provinces, Populace Fearful, Mortuaries Overwhelmed

COVID-19 cases have been increasing in China, since the ruling communist regime eased its “zero-COVID” restrictions on Dec. 7. Netizens have been reporting that hospitals and mortuaries are being overwhelmed by demand, particularly in nine provinces where the relatively new Omicron subvariants BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 have been reported to be spreading quickly.

On Dec. 14, China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention announced for the first time that 49 cases of BQ.1 had been found in nine Chinese provinces, as well as cases of BQ.1.1. However, the authorities didn’t identify which provinces were the ones affected.

BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 are descendants of the Omicron variant BA.5, which was first detected by scientists in South Africa in April. They started taking over BA.5 as the dominant COVID-19 strains in the United States in October and have been detected in more than 50 countries.

Just days earlier on Dec. 12, the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP’s) official media “People’s Daily” reported, citing Chinese experts, that the strains spreading in China were still Omicron BA.5.2 and BF.7. According to the report, most cases in Guangzhou were BA.5.2, with a high proportion of asymptomatic patients due to milder clinical condition than BF.7, which was said to be the cause of most of the infections in Beijing, which has been experiencing more severe cases.

But the Dec. 14 announcement has stirred distrust and fear in Beijing, made worse by the many claims on social media of residents experiencing allegedly more severe symptoms unlike the typical cold-like symptoms associated with previous Omicron variants.

Texas Governor Seeks Probe of NGOs for Alleged Migrant ‘Illegal Border Crossing’ Assistance

Texas Governor Greg Abbott called on the attorney general to open an investigation into non-government organizations or NGOs who may have assisted in migrant border crossings into the state. The move comes after record-setting large group crossings around El Paso over the weekend.

“There have been recent reports that non-governmental organizations may have assisted with illegal border crossings near El Paso,” Governor Abbott wrote in a letter to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. “We further understand NGOs may be engaged in unlawfully orchestrating other border crossings through activities on both sides of the border, including in sectors other than El Paso. In light of these reports, I am calling on the Texas Attorney General’s Office to initiate an investigation into the role of NGOs in planning and facilitating the illegal transportation of illegal immigrants across our borders.”

The governor’s call comes as the expected end of the Title 42 coronavirus protection protocol looms next week. In advance of the program’s ending, groups of more than 2,400 migrants per day crossed over the past weekend, Breitbart Texas reported. One of those groups consisted of more than 1,000 who crossed overnight on Sunday.

In addition to the crossings into El Paso, more than 11,000 crossed into the Del Rio Sector during the past week. Another 3,200 migrants got away without being apprehended.

The governor alleges that NGOs may have a role “in planning and assisting illegal border crossings into Texas.”

“The end of Title 42 in the coming weeks is expected to cause a dramatic increase in the number of illegal immigrants crossing America’s southern border beyond the all-time high levels currently reported,” the governor’s office said in a statement.

One NGO, the Border Network for Human Rights, responded to the governor’s call for an investigation calling it a personal attack on El Paso, an abuse of power, and a “racist distortion of what’s happening on the border,” El Paso Matters reported.

“What is very concerning is that now by the statement itself, he’s attempting to criminalize not just immigrants, but humanitarian work in Texas,” Director Fernando Garcia told the local news outlet.

Arizona Sued By Biden Administration For Trying To Curb Illegal Immigration With Makeshift Border

The Biden Administration is taking Arizona to court over the makeshift border wall Republican Gov. Doug Ducey has constructed in the wake of historic levels of illegal immigration on the southern border.

The suit filed Wednesday pertains to the placement of shipping containers along the border that the Biden Administration argues trespasses on federal lands, according to the Associated Press.

“Not only has Arizona refused to halt its trespasses and remove the shipping containers from federal lands, but it has indicated that it will continue to trespass on federal lands and install additional shipping containers. As a result, the United States brings this action to obtain appropriate relief for Arizona’s unlawful continuing trespasses and invasions of the United States’ paramount sovereign property rights and interests under the U.S. Constitution,” the lawsuit claimed according to Fox News.

Ducey sued the Biden Administration in October for its failure to protect the southern border, maintaining that the State of Arizona had a right to defend itself as it could not “rely on the federal government to ensure its security,” Fox News reported.

“The safety and security of Arizona and its citizens must not be ignored. Arizona is going to do the job that Joe Biden refuses to do — secure the border in any way we can. We’re not backing down,” Ducey said at the time, according to Fox News.

As the year comes to a close, Ducey will have to step aside for Democratic Gov.-elect Katie Hobbs who has already spoken out against the make-shift border wall and has vowed to remove it, the outlet added.

TIME Person of the Year – Ukrainian President Zelensky Just Shut Down Court that Investigates Corruption

TIME’s Person of the Year, President Volodymyr Zelensky, is praised for liquidating a Kyiv anti-corruption court.

Newsmax reports:

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hailed his dissolution on Tuesday of a Kyiv court as evidence Ukraine can fight to end a history of corruption and Russia’s invasion at the same time.

“This story has drawn to a close,” he said as he announced he had signed a law liquidating the Kyiv District Administrative Court, which Ukrainian anti-corruption authorities had compared to a criminal organization and whose chairman was hit with U.S. sanctions Dec. 9.

“But the story of reforms continues – it continues, even in the time of such a war,” Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address.

He signed the law the same day it was passed by Ukraine’s parliament, in a nod to extensive judiciary and other reforms needed for Ukraine to join the European Union.

Pavlo Vovk, the court’s chairman, said in a Facebook post that the decision to eliminate the court was purely political, made in haste and one that “those who applaud it today will soon regret.”

The U.S. State Department said Washington was imposing sanctions on Vovk “for soliciting bribes in return for interfering in judicial and other public processes,” and designated two of his immediate family members at the same time.

To date, Zelensky has outlawed a Ukrainian church and the opposition party. No doubt that the party that voted in the article above did not include any opposition.

Removal of Criminal Illegal Immigrants Arrested by Local Police Drops 71% Under Biden

Besides smashing a record for apprehending a ghastly 2.4 million illegal immigrants along the Mexican border last year, the Biden administration is also making history for drastically slashing the number of criminal aliens that get deported. In its first nine months the administration removed 71% fewer criminal aliens arrested by local police compared to a comparable period in 2019 under President Donald Trump. Overall deportations also declined under Biden from 186,000 in fiscal year 2020 to 59,000 the following year, according to government data provided to the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). The Washington D.C.-based nonprofit is the nation’s only think tank devoted exclusively to the research of U.S. immigration policy and has issued a multitude of informative reports over the years.

This month the nonpartisan group published the findings of its analysis of state and local statistics involving illegal aliens removed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in fiscal years 2019 through 2021. The records include migrants identified by ICE with a biometric match under the Secure Communities program, which uses a federal information-sharing partnership between the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to identify aliens in custody without imposing additional requirements on state and local law enforcement. ICE uses fingerprint matching to flag illegal immigrants arrested by local police for state crimes and the agency removes individuals who present significant threats to public safety as determined by the severity of their crime and criminal history, according to ICE’s Secure Communities website. The agency stresses that “the federal government, not the state or local law enforcement agency, determines what immigration enforcement action, if any, is appropriate.”

Under Biden the number has nose-dived. Besides the 71% drop in removals of deportable aliens that came to ICE’s attention after a local criminal arrest, deportations of convicted felons also fell 25% from 36,000 in fiscal year 2020 to 27,000 in fiscal year 2021. CIS found that 51 jurisdictions “experienced acute declines” with criminal removals dipping an unbelievable 90%. Ten states—Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Vermont—saw an “extreme decline in enforcement” of over 80% under Biden, the CIS report says, adding that of the 50 American counties that typically have the highest criminal alien removals 14 experienced the extreme 80-plus percent drop under Biden. About a third of the “high-volume counties” are in Texas, according to the figures obtained by CIS. One of them, Howard County in the state’s western region, is singled out as an example of the public safety implications of the Biden enforcement policies. “It is reasonable to conclude from these statistics that under the Biden policies, ICE is knowingly taking a pass on removing most deportable criminal aliens who have come to their attention after arrest in Howard County, and even knowingly taking a pass on some of the deportable criminal aliens who were convicted of serious or violent crimes in Howard County,” CIS writes in its report. “As a result, Howard County likely is experiencing some degree of repeated crime from those criminal aliens who continue to offend and victimize community members after ICE declined to take action to remove them.”

Researchers at the immigration think tank conclude that the public safety consequences of the Biden interior enforcement policies experienced in Howard County are undoubtedly occurring in hundreds of other jurisdictions around the nation. “State and local authorities should keep track of cases of criminal aliens who are not removed by ICE and bring these cases to the attention of ICE leadership, members of Congress, and the public,” according to CIS. “In addition, through appropriations or otherwise, the new Congress should clarify its expectations with respect to immigration enforcement in the interior, particularly involving criminal aliens, certain of whom are subject to mandatory arrest and detention under the Immigration and Nationality Act.”

Back in 2010, RNC Chair Michael Steele was heavily criticized and eventually lost his position because donors were angry about what they believed was luxurious spending on private jets, floral arrangements, chauffeur services, and member meetings in expensive tropical locales. Donors were used to frugality from the RNC under the George W. Bush administration, when “Karl Rove would bitch if there were flowers on the tables” and staff holiday parties were catered by Chick-fil-A.

Despite Joe Biden’s economy and three straight cycles of election losses, the RNC’s big-spending days are back with a vengeance.

Perhaps because of these losses both RNC donors and committee members are intensely interested in the committee’s finances, particularly the spending. Late last week, RedState was provided a report dated October 7, 2022 that examined RNC’s 2021-22 spending. It calculated more than $500,000 in private jet expenses, $64,000 at clothing retailers, and $321,000 in floral arrangements.

To determine how that compared with the rest of Ronna McDaniel’s tenure, RedState examined RNC expenditures from 2017 through 2022. In addition to a review of Federal Elections Commission (FEC) data, RedState spoke with current vendors, state party officials familiar with the workings, former staffers (some from McDaniel’s tenure, and some who worked for prior chairs), and several current RNC members to verify numbers and dates. Most were only willing to discuss the matters on background, and all were promised anonymity to avoid potential retaliation.

It is difficult to accurately categorize all of the expenditures because a significant number of transactions seem to be misclassified. For example, nearly $5,000 spent in 2022 at Lululemon, a luxury athletic apparel brand, was classified as “office expense,” as were two expenditures totaling $9,300 at Madison Square Garden in 2017.

Our review found that the amounts spent during the 2021-22 election cycle seem to have been par for the course and possibly even lower than previous portions of McDaniel’s tenure. According to FEC filings, since 2017, the RNC has spent:

• $3.1 million on private jet services

• $1.3 million on limousine/chauffeur services

• $17.1 million on donor mementos

• $750,000 on floral arrangements

• $80,000 in alcohol-related expenditures

Nearly $400,000 has been spent on event tickets and other entertainment activities, including $30,000 for a private box at a Las Vegas Raiders game, $13,000 for Broadway shows, $9,400 at Madison Square Garden, and $43,000 at Top Golf locations in Texas, Nevada, Virginia, and Maryland.

According to a senior staffer, the private box Raiders game was part of a retreat for senior staff members. RNC funds were also used to fly the senior staffers and their plus-ones first-class to Las Vegas, and for their hotel rooms, food, and alcohol, the staffer says.

Senior staff retreats were also held at the Salamander Resort & Spa in Virginia in 2021 and 2022, according to another staffer. A national committee member says that at the 2021 retreat, held from March 19-21, 30 senior staffers and their families attended, and the RNC paid for Katie Walsh and Mike Shields to speak to the group. FEC reporting shows that the RNC paid $260,000 to the resort in 2021 and 2022, classified as travel expenses and venue rental and catering.

The dates of the various entertainment expenditures were provided to former staffers and national committee members, who confirmed that there were no donor events or other official RNC events occurring at those times.

Under the current leadership, the RNC has spent more than $150,000 on what could be considered non-essential office expenses, including $25,000 on Commonwealth Joe coffee, $7,000 on cupcakes, nearly $7,000 on candles and diffusers, and $75,000 total at Pottery Barn, West Elm, Restoration Hardware, and Crate & Barrel. In addition, the committee’s FEC reports show expenditures totaling $381,000 classified as “Furniture Expense” during the same time frame.

More than $100,000 was spent at high-end clothing stores such as Rhoback, REI, Nordstrom, Vineyard Vines, Footjoy, Ralph Lauren, Carhartt, and Smathers & Branson.

An RNC vendor tells RedState that the Vineyard Vines expense ($12,000) was likely for embroidered jackets RNC staffers recently received.

According to the financials, the RNC is quite generous to its donors, spending $17 million on donor mementos – and possibly more – during McDaniel’s tenure. Custom pins by legendary DC jeweler Ann Hand and Christmas ornaments from Chemart (the company that makes the White House Christmas ornaments) are listed as donor memento expenses, but the financials also include $65,000 in office supplies from Ann Hand and $28,000 from Chemart.

The records also include more than $100,000 in hair/makeup services and dry cleaning expenses, which presumably are for McDaniel’s media appearances and wardrobe.

For perspective, the Democratic National Committee has spent $1.5 million on donor gifts, $35,000 on private jets, and only $1,000 for floral arrangements during the 2021-22 election cycle. Longtime RNC committee members who spoke with RedState said that other than during Michael Steele’s time as chair, it has not been standard practice for the chair to use private jet or chauffeur services.

A committee member who spoke to RedState on condition of anonymity said, “We are only provided with top line financial numbers during our meetings, with no specificity, and when I’ve asked the budget chair for more information, he has been unable to provide it.”

The member added that there is general frustration about the lack of financial transparency among committee members, but that members who demand more information are labeled as troublemakers.

Major donors who are learning of the expenditures are understandably upset about how their contributions are being spent. Country music star and RNC donor John Rich, who has been openly critical of the RNC’s expenditures and of McDaniel herself, tells RedState:

“The leadership of the RNC has taken advantage of millions of regular, everyday Conservatives by pretending to support what Patriots support, but in reality, are blowing untold troves of cash on extravagant nonsense, and supporting RINO candidates while ignoring America First contenders. They are nothing more than controlled opposition. The RNC ran ads in 2021 raising money under the phrase ‘Fight for Trump!’ while simultaneously telling Trump and his team to ‘stand down’ from questioning the election results, stating he was ‘ruining the party.’

“The RNC has betrayed its supporters, and I for one will never help them raise another red cent until the Judas elements of the organization have been purged.”

McDaniel did not reply to RedState’s request for comment prior to publication.

AALTEN, The Netherlands — Erik Luiten seems an unlikely person to be fighting a conspiracy to destroy Western society.

The tall, affable and soft-spoken man is more likely found tending to 150 dairy cows at his farm in the windswept green flatness of the eastern Netherlands. A sixth-generation farmer on this land, he knows the name of each cow and that of its parents. The vast barn echoes to pop classics, including “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley.

“There has been research on what music cows like best,” he said with a knowing grin, “and it’s not classical.”

Luiten, 52, is a national organizer in a campaign to stop Dutch government plans to potentially shut thousands of farms in order to reduce harmful nitrogen emissions by half by 2030 — a plan that critics say will change the country’s huge agriculture industry forever.

Tractors have blocked highways and surrounded government buildings as part of a campaign that has huge public support. The three-year-old Farmer-Citizen Movement, known by its Dutch abbreviation BBB, is now one of the most popular in the country, according to opinion polls.

This grassroots protest movement has been driven largely by ordinary farmers like Luiten and their supporters, but it has another element: the far-right. Radicalized by the opposition to strict Covid measures and spurred on by conspiracy theories about “globalists” dismantling national democracies and importing nonwhite immigrants to majority-white countries, these activists see the farmers as the latest victims of an assault on Western civilization itself.

As conspiracy-driven Telegram groups, right-wing commentators and some lawmakers would baselessly put it, Dutch farms are being shut down to make space for asylum-seekers. Right-wing populists around the world have offered their support for the farmers’ stand, including former President Donald Trump, France’s Marine Le Pen and Poland’s far-right populist government.

But, in reality, many Dutch farmers are just trying to make a living.

The A1 motorway stretching east from the Dutch capital, Amsterdam, to the remote rural heart of the country is littered with upside-down flags. Supporters stand on highway bridges every night waving the inverted tricolor as a symbol of defiance against an unpopular government and to call for an end to the nitrogen plan. Passing drivers honk in agreement.

In June, Luiten drove a tractor in a slow-motion convoy across almost the entire Netherlands to join a protest organizers claim was attended by up to 60,000. He set off at midnight, arriving 11 hours later.

But there is little sign of militancy or opposition to a new world order near the German border at Luiten’s farm, where an automated milking machine shows the name, weight and projected daily milk yield of each animal — a Dutch invention now standard across dairy farming. This oddly quiet, high-tech operation can be managed by just him and his wife.

Farms like his across the country could soon shut down.

In 2019, the European Union’s top court and the Dutch Council of State, the country’s top administrative court and legislative advisory body, ruled that the Netherlands had breached E.U. environmental standards by failing to ensure they were met in 162 protected nature areas.

The real fury began earlier this year when the Dutch Department for Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality released a map showing which areas had to reduce their emissions and by how much — in some areas, this meant 95% of farming activity must be stopped within a year. The Dutch farming lobby group LTO estimates there are nearly 54,000 agricultural businesses across the country with exports totaling 94.5 billion euros ($99.75 billion) in 2019.

The radical Farmers Defense Force, which experts described as a far-right group, has said it would not accept any buyouts and promised further protests.

“Farmers aren’t against nature, we live in nature, we depend on nature and we want to preserve it,” Luiten said, sitting in his kitchen dotted with calendars, photos and coffee cups featuring cows. “But we need to be realistic. In a country this small, with this much activity, it’s not realistic to have that much nature — you have to choose,” he said, alluding to the problem of land use in a country that is only a little larger than Maryland.

Luiten has to cut 12% off his farm’s activity, which would mean a reduction in livestock and a very slim profit margin in the future, but he thinks he can survive.

Talks between the government and farmers groups have continued, but with no breakthrough. On Nov. 25, the Dutch government said it would adopt measures set out in a report from former deputy prime minister Johan Remkes — who has been mediating between the government and the farmers — in which high-emission farms would have to radically reduce emissions, move or shut within a year or face compulsory purchase. The government said it would have this “conversation” with 2,000 to 3,000 businesses.

“We are doing this to restore our nature, which is in really bad shape, and to get stalled permits moving. We want to do this approach with an eye for the human dimension and carefully,” Lisanne de Roos, a press officer for the minister for nature and nitrogen policy, said via email.

“The retiring entrepreneurs will receive a very attractive scheme that is above competitive prices,” she added.

Dutch Facebook and Telegram groups, often with “Freedom” in their names, post memes and videos almost daily arguing that the farmers movement is opposing the “great reset” — a supposed attempt to remake the world into a single economic-political bloc to the detriment of national identities.

Klokkenluiders voor Vrijheid (meaning whistleblowers for freedom, which has 87,000 subscribers) shared a video in November featuring David Icke, a British conspiracy theorist, arguing that Dutch farms are being shut down so the government can restrict food supply and more easily coerce and control the population.

Icke said Nov. 4 that the Dutch government banned him from entering the Netherlands to appear at a rally, posting a letter from the Department of Justice on his website.

The theory has definite international resonance. It has featured on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show and was given oxygen by the actor Russell Brand on his YouTube channel, which has 6 million subscribers. The theory has echoes of the racist great replacement theory, which has been cited by right-wing mass shooters in their manifestos from New Zealand to El Paso, Texas.

Conspiracy theories tend to begin reacting to a specific, complex problem, but then begin to encompass all of society’s problems, especially if there is no other explanation being offered.

Filmmaker and actor Tyler Perry opened up Thursday about his own suicide attempts after hearing about the death of Stephen "tWitch" Boss. tWitch was widely known for being the longtime DJ from "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." According to multiple reports, the dancer and DJ died by suicide. He was 40 years old.

"I've only met him a couple of times, but he always full of life and seemed like such a light," he said.

Perry said he tried to die by suicide a couple of times when he was in a dark place.

"I didn't think it would get any better. I had endured so much pain, so much abuse, sexual abuse. It was all so hard to just move through I thought the only way to make this better, this pain to go away is by ending my life," Perry said.

He urged anyone who is going through tough times and similar experiences to reach out to someone.

"Had any of those attempts happened, I would have missed the best part of my life," he said.

Perry also explained that what helped him push through tough times was realizing how his pain was for a greater purpose.

“Political scientists call it issue expansion. It’s a small issue, but it expands because of vicious circles and before you know it, it’s all about the great reset,” Arjen Boin, an expert in social movements from Leiden University in the Netherlands, said by phone.

At one protest in Amsterdam in July, an upside down Dutch national flag, the symbol of the farmers’ struggle but also of a wider anti-government “freedom” movement, was emblazoned with the slogan: “Dutch evicted for Ukrainians? Government? Guilty.”

Luiten is, however, bemused by the idea this is a global fight for Western freedom and that his land could be bought and used to house asylum-seekers. Aside from that, “it doesn’t make sense to build houses in the middle of nowhere,” he adds.

He is reluctant to criticize extremist groups for supporting the farmers, but is clear there is a limit to the movement’s tolerance.

“The right-wing side, with the whole World Economic Forum discussion, a lot of farmers believe it. So, there’s a lot of crossover support. I’m not here to judge which is right or wrong, I’m happy there are people fighting with us.

“When it’s getting violent, we have to take care we’re not getting into a situation we don’t want to get into.”

The Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality told NBC News it had “no choice” but to continue with its plans.

“Nature is under pressure, and we need to act swiftly to restore it,” de Roos said, adding that there was a significant assistance package on the table to help farmers change their methods or leave their farms.

Some see the government’s farming plan as a direct challenge to a traditional industry, which inspires national pride of near-mythic proportions. And as with protests against pandemic lockdowns, curfews and Covid passports across Europe, extremists have used the widespread sympathy for the movement to boost their attention and support.

“It lends itself to the heroic, because the farmer is a mythical expression of local against a far-away elite somewhere in these glassy towers making policies that nobody understands,” Boin said.

There are broadly two far-right groups in the farmers movement, according to Cas Mudde, a Dutch expert on radical extremism at the University of Georgia. There’s the Farmers Defense Force, “who are at the heart of the most radical and violent actions.”

And there’s the “external” far-right actors, such as the Forum For Democracy (FvD) party, “which tried to use the farmers for their broader political struggle,” and whose leadership is largely upper middle-class and urban and has no ideological or personal ties to the farming community, he said.

“The far-right can profit from populist opposition to almost any such an issue, but its bread and butter is nativism, which is why they try to relate all issues to immigration,” Mudde said via email.

The Farmers Defense Force didn’t respond to a request for comment. However, Thierry Baudet, a lawmaker and leader of the FvD party, agreed to talk.

“This is about a globalist takeover,” he said by phone. “This was already manifested in the E.U. project, but also in the ongoing support for mass migration and the philosophy that is cherished by most people in the elite circles, that we are all travelers anyway, we’re all migrants anyway.”

Baudet links the farmers movement to the one that emerged to oppose pandemic measures. A climate change skeptic, he says there is no environmental reason to reduce nitrogen.

He is in no doubt that the end result of this will be the removal of farms to make way for housing for immigrants.

But is the political far-right taking advantage of farmers’ very real problems to further its own long-held beliefs about national and global governance?

The Netherlands is second only to the United States in global agricultural exports, a staggering achievement for a country with a surface area about 16,000 square miles, much of it reclaimed from the sea. At just 0.42% the size of the U.S, the outline of the Netherlands would fit inside Ohio.

In the northern province of Friesland, Trienke Elshoff-Witteveen runs what the industry’s critics would call a “megafarm,” her 75 meter-long (246ft) barn home to some 250 Frisian-Holstein cows.

The animals are grazing inside because the dry summer has been unkind to the grass. An ear tag reveals one is called Rocky; its father was Solero. Two wind turbines and solar panels on the barn’s roof generate almost all the farm’s energy needs.

Elshoff-Witteveen, 54, explains in stereotypical Dutch directness that she too has thought of leaving the farm, possibly moving to Denmark or Canada.

“If we have to leave, I don’t think there is a future for a lot of farms in the Netherlands. We don’t think about it too much because we don’t want to leave. We have two sons who want to take over and go further with this farm,” she said.

Also a regional official for LTO, the national farmers union, Elshoff-Witteveen has been working on the farm since 1998; her parents before her since 1982. She is convinced the government plans are wrong and disproportionate. “It’s too fast, too costly, they can’t do it,” she said.

She argues that farmers can reduce much of the nitrogen emissions by changing the way they feed cattle and manage waste — but not without some financial help.

But Elshoff-Wittevee is too busy running a business to think very much about a great reset. Like many others, she sees the militancy as an extension of public unrest about Covid restrictions.

“Conspiracy theories? I don’t believe that but there are a lot of farmers who do,” she said.

“It started with Covid. A lot of people were mad about how the government was telling them they weren’t allowed to do this, not allowed to do that. I think that anger is still there,” she said.

Caroline van der Plas is the founder and the sole lawmaker of the Farmer-Citizen Movement. Formed in 2019, it would have the second most seats in Parliament if a general election was called now, according to opinion polls.

“There’s a lot going on in Holland. We have the nitrogen crisis, we have the housing crisis, we have the asylum crisis, energy crisis. There’s so much going on and so many people are worried and there’s a feeling they are not being taken seriously enough,” she says.

Van der Plaas rejected the idea that farms are being removed to make way for immigrants and wasn’t entirely pleased by Le Pen’s and Trump’s vocal support for her movement. “I mean thanks, but let us go back to work here and solve the problems.”

The reasons for such widespread support of the farmers isn’t ideological, she said.

People in the Netherlands view the farmers “as hard-working people: They are always working, they make the food, they take care of the landscape. Holland is a very dense country and much of it is agricultural, green and rural.

“There are a lot of villages where people live and work alongside farmers. The silent majority is now speaking in favor of the farmers.”

In 1779, soldiers found themselves in the middle of the American Revolution. On September 23rd of that year, Naval Captain John Paul Jones and his crew were told to surrender as they engaged in battle with a British frigate of the northern coast of England.

You may not be familiar with the battle, but I’m sure you’ve heard his famous response: “I’ve not yet begun to fight!”

Surrender was not an option. Even though they were out-manned, out-gunned, and out-resourced, they continued to fight. It was difficult. Their boat sank…but they were victorious.

Today, patriots are tired. The last few years have been difficult. It’s hard to watch criminals walk free with seemingly no accountability. It’s discouraging to feel like we can’t see anything tangibly happen.

But now is NOT the time for surrender. May we stand together and proclaim, “We’ve not yet begun to fight!”

In Ephesians 6, we are instructed to put on the armor of God. In verse 13, it says, “Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”

Having done ALL to stand.

How Illogical Child Support Rules Can Force Kids Into Poverty

Child support guidelines have serious logical design flaws that sometimes generate child support amounts that ‘starve’ rather than ‘feed’ children.

While the media focuses on celebrity divorces, such as the recent multimillion-dollar divorce between Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, millions of poor and middle-class families suffer from a dysfunctional family court system. That includes the Missouri daughter who helps pay for her own child support so her mother won’t go to jail again. It includes a 2-year-old girl in Tulsa who was living with her father until the court sent him to jail for child support debt.

In the United States, nearly 24 million children grow up in single-parent families. One in three American kids grows up in a broken family, either without a mother or a father or with divorced parents who share physical custody. The problem is pervasive, especially among low-income families, yet receives little attention from politicians. Although the issues are complicated, a simple mathematical fix to one aspect of the situation would improve children’s lives.

Child support guidelines have serious logical design flaws that sometimes generate child support amounts that paradoxically “starve” rather than “feed” children. They often make it impossible for single parents to properly care for their children, forcing some parents into perpetual debt and incarceration.

We analyzed child support guidelines from 10 randomly selected states. All 10 guidelines have mathematical flaws that can generate absurd child support amounts. Here are five examples. All dollar amounts are annual.

Connecticut: A mother and father with two children have 50/50 equal time, shared parenting, and $30,000 and $42,000 in net income. Based on the state’s guidelines, the father should pay $12,103 in child support. Despite equal time with their children, the mother ends up with $42,103 and the father $29,897. The guidelines reverse the incomes of the two parents, increasing the difference between mom and dad; child support “starves” the children in one home to “feed” them in the other.

Mississippi: An every-other-weekend father has two daughters with two different mothers. The mother of the older daughter has $80,000 in net income, while the father and the other mother make $40,000 each. The higher-earning mother receives $5,600 in child support, while the lower-earning mother only receives $4,816. Child support “starves” the younger daughter to “feed” the older daughter, increasing the already large salary disparity between the two mothers.

Minnesota: A father makes $75,000, and the mother $25,000. Their two children spend 275 overnights with dad (75 percent) and 90 with mom (25 percent). With identical proportions, there might not be much need for child support in either direction, but the lower-income mother pays $4,490 to the father under Minnesota rules. With roughly 16 and 25 percent tax rates, the mother has $16,510 in disposable income, while the father has almost four times as much at $60,740. While the children are well provided when living with dad, they are poor on their days with mom.

Georgia: A never-married father has three children with three different mothers, a surprisingly common situation. The mothers have no other children. All four parents have a gross income of $26,000. All three children spend every other weekend plus some holidays and summer weeks with their father: in total, 92 days.

Under Georgia rules, the father pays $12,480 in total child support for his three children. With approximately 17 percent in taxes, each mother with 365-92=273 child-days has more than $25,000 in after-tax disposable income. The father with a total of 3×92=276 child-days has only $9,100. In such a situation, unable to feed himself and his children, many dads are tragically forced out of their kids’ lives.

Utah: A non-custodial father has two daughters with the same mother, while his neighbor is the non-custodial father of two sons with two different mothers. All five parents make $50,000. Without child support, the boys would be better off financially than the girls since the girls must share resources with a sister. Despite this, the boys’ dad pays $10,762 in child support, while the girls’ mom only receives $8,724.

All 10 guidelines evaluated had multiple serious issues of the types described above. It is a widespread and unrecognized problem across the United States.

While these are all constructed illustrative examples, the repercussions for children and families are all too real. In the United States, parents owe $113 billion in outstanding child support debt, with an inability to pay the unrealistic amounts a significant reason for delinquency. Illogically set child support payments cause one parent or another — and hence their children — into part-time or full-time poverty.

Such debt leads to parental depression, suicidal ideation, and alcohol abuse. If one parent — typically the dad — separates physically and emotionally from his kids, it harms children’s social and emotional well-being. Unable to pay, some parents lose their driver’s licenses, while others go to jail. In a national cohort of urban families, 14 percent of non-custodial fathers had been incarcerated for non-payment. Courts do not spare mothers and custodial parents from jail either.

In effect, states use mathematically flawed guidelines to set child support amounts that parents cannot pay. Then they jail parents when they cannot pay, removing them from the children who love and need them.

In a stark assessment, Vickie Turetsky, the former commissioner for the U.S. Office of Child Support Enforcement, stated, “Unrealistic child support policies and practices entangle poor African American men and their families in poverty and have become a destabilizing force. … Child support orders set beyond the ability of non-custodial parents to comply push them out of low-wage jobs, drown them in debt, hound them into the underground economy, and chase them out of their children’s lives.”

Middle-class parents may be able to avoid jail by spending their house equity, retirement savings, college funds, and business assets, but the illogical child support guidelines also harm them and their children.

What is the solution? By properly accounting for parenting time and half-siblings, it is not difficult to construct child support guidelines that avoid these logical flaws, as we have done in an article published by the National Bureau of Economic Research.

The problem with the guidelines is not that child support is too high or too low. It is sometimes too high and sometimes too low. For example, the Mississippi mother with less income needs more child support, while the wealthier mother receives too much. Fix the formula and you fix the problem.

How did these strange child support guidelines ever come about? Family court lawyers largely decided them. While there are many good reasons to become an attorney, we do not know anyone who entered law school because of an enthusiasm for mathematics. Governors who use the simple mathematical formulas we developed to reform their state’s child support guidelines will reap the rewards due to leaders who improve children’s lives.

Children need good schools, a healthy social life, and, most importantly, a loving, caring relationship with both their mother and father. Many children of divorce lack the latter, and mathematically flawed child support guidelines are a major culprit.

NSW Health urges people to throw out Riviera Farms spinach from Costco after nine people across Sydney hospitalised

At least nine people from four separate households across Sydney have needed medical attention after eating packaged fresh spinach, believed to be accidentally contaminated, according to New South Wales Health.

It has urged anyone who has experienced any unusual and severe symptoms after eating the spinach to seek immediate medical attention by visiting their nearest emergency department due to toxic reactions.

State health authorities said some of the reported symptoms have been severe and include "hallucinations, delirium, rapid heartbeat and blurred vision".

A Riviera Farms spokesperson said the product may have been "contaminated with a weed which can have health consequences if consumed".

"As soon as we were advised of the possible weed contamination from one of our customers, we immediately advised them to remove our impacted spinach from their shelves, and contacted state health and federal food authorities," the spokesperson said.

"There is no suggestion, and to our knowledge no possibility, that any other products have been impacted by this weed.

"Riviera Farms has been in the business of providing fresh food since the 1880s, and we are saddened to confirm that we have likely had our first-ever significant contamination incident."

NSW Health said it does not yet know the full extent of the product's distribution and is working with the NSW Food Authority, as well as other jurisdictions, to investigate the contamination further.
