IMO, there could be an alternate contract so that it is not necessarily between a man and a woman but between two people who have an understanding with one another to be that person's next of kin. That would cover being allowed into hospitals and allowed to sign for life giving care, Allow for inheritances. Allow for being on the other person's health insurance, etc. But not to adopt kids as a couple.
