This furry scientist won’t let Twitter’s COVID pessimists kill her vibe

The pseudonymous Chise is upbeat about the fight against COVID-19. But her opinions - and lifestyle - have brought her under fire.

And once the pandemic is over, she plans to go back to what she was working on before this: influenza. And she’ll be bringing the same boundless optimism she’s had about the COVID vaccines. “I’m looking forward to improving our influenza vaccines,” she says, her voice full of hope. “Can you imagine having one that's as effective as these COVID vaccines?”

On March 11, 2020, bioMérieux announced the finalization of their real-time PCR SARS-COV-2 R-GENE test. The company also announced the development of a fully automated test based on the BioFire FilmArray technology with the support of the United States Department of Defense. Lastly, bioMérieux launched development on an expanded version of its BioFire FilmArray Respiratory Panel 2. The new version included SARS-CoV-2 in addition to the 21 other common respiratory pathogens and delivered results in approximately 45 minutes. After this announcement, Labrador issued a statement claiming that when it filed the lawsuit against BioFire it had no idea BioFire was developing COVID-19 testing kits. Fortress Investment Group, parent company to Labrador, offered to grant both the defendants and anyone else a royalty-free license for its technology for use in COVID-19 tests. bioMérieux and BioFire declined Labrador's offer.

In June 2021, bioMérieux launched EPISEQ SARS-COV-2, a cloud-based software application for the epidemiological surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 variants. The application identifies variants based on international nomenclatures, including any new variant of concern (VOC), and is compatible with three major sequencing platforms (Illumina, Oxford Nanopore, Thermo Fisher).

In 2015, the FM participated in the donation by the French government of CIRI's Biosafety Level 4 expertise to the Wuhan Institute of Virology. This laboratory was accused by the leak of Covid-19, but there was not found any direct evidence that SARS-CoV-2 was inside a laboratory in Wuhan before the pandemic, although the lab has not released its records, which have been sought by scientists and governments around the world.

In January 2017, a researcher who was financed by the CAMS-FM partnership participated in a study of human rhinovirus and genotype A21.

Elon Musk's 'amnesty' pledge brings back QAnon, far-right Twitter accounts

Data reviewed by NBC News shows that many restored accounts trafficked in conspiracy theories and hate speech. The changes come as some high-profile users have fled.

Elon Musk’s Twitter is beginning to take shape.

A “general amnesty” has restored hundreds of accounts of right-wing activists and QAnon adherents, according to data reviewed by NBC News. The reinstatement of far-right accounts has coincided with a series of bans of left-wing accounts, leaving users unsure of how the company is now applying its rules.

“The ambiguity is a problem,” said Yoel Roth, who recently departed as the head of trust and safety at Twitter. “People don’t know if the rules have changed, and amnesty suggests that at least at some level, there’s disagreement with removing some of those folks. So, we’re seeing a lot of lines being pushed, coupled with more constrained enforcement. It’s a dangerous combination.”

7-Eleven to serve alcohol with in-store dining in Ontario

Southwestern Ontario will soon see beer and wine in a corner store – though not exactly the way Premier Doug Ford envisioned in his 2018 campaign promise.

Convenience store 7-Eleven says it has secured a liquor sales licence from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario to serve beer, wines and coolers at a restaurant in one of its stores in Leamington.

The company says the licensed restaurant also serves food such as chicken wings, potato wedges and pizza.

There are similar licensed restaurants at several 7-Eleven locations in Alberta, and the company says the Ontario store is the beginning of a wider provincial expansion.

Ford promised during his first provincial election campaign to let corner stores sell beer and wine, and his government even passed a law to terminate a 10-year deal with The Beer Store set to expire in 2025 that prevents the expansion.

But that law was never put into force and after a cabinet shuffle saw a new finance minister, bluster over ripping up the deal all but disappeared.

Since then, the Progressive Conservative government has taken a few other alcohol liberalization steps, including permanently allowing restaurants to sell alcohol with food as part of a delivery or takeout order, which was first introduced during the pandemic.

The colossal installation, entitled ‘Infection (Calvin Klein Obsession for Men),’ by the Swiss artist Pamela Rosenkranz, is based on a research into an infectious disease called toxoplasmosis, which is mainly transmitted by cats and affects up to half of the world’s population. For this installation, Rosenkranz has used sand soaked with the fragrance ‘Obsession for Men’ by Calvin Klein, made from synthetic feline pheromones. The perfume has been used to attract wild cats in order to entice them into so-called photo traps, with the help of artificial pheromones. Camera trapping is a method for capturing wild animals on film, with as little human interference as possible.

The bright green light illuminating the peak of the sand pyramid not only plays interesting visual games, but also evaporates the scent of the stained sand. With ‘Infection (Calvin Klein Obsession for Men),’ Rosenkranz creates an interface between man and nature, civilization and wilderness.
