Russian injured in Africa expected ‘parcel with son’s head’, controversial businessman claims

Dmitry Sytyy, the head of a Russian culture center in CAR, was wounded in a reported package bomb blast

A Russian official serving in the Central African Republic (CAR), who was injured on Friday, ignored safety precautions because he feared that people threatening his family would send him his son’s head in a box, controversial Russian entrepreneur Yevgeny Prigozhin claimed on Friday.

Dmitry Sytyy, who heads the local branch of a network of cultural centers under the Russian Foreign Ministry, was rushed to hospital after a parcel bomb reportedly exploded in his hands. Details of the incident were first shared by a Russian officers' organization, which claims to be training Central African troops under a Moscow-mediated contract. Prigozhin is linked to the ‘Wagner group’, a private military company, which he said he created in 2014 to further Russian interests.

The businessman claimed that in November Sytnyy received a note from Togo, another nation in central Africa that, like CAR, used to be a French colony. The message included a photo of the man’s son, who lives in France, and a threat to send his severed head “unless the Russians leave the African continent and open the doors to the French”, Prigozhin claimed in a statement published by the press office of his company, Concord.

“Today he received a parcel. Despite all safety instructions, Dmitry Sytyy opened it in a state of anguish, thinking that it contained his son’s head. An explosion followed,” the businessman said.

Prigozhin accused Paris of being behind the blast and urged Russia to investigate it, and potentially designate France a state sponsor of terrorism.

The US has reportedly considered declaring the Wagner group a terrorist organization, in a bid to put more pressure on Russia. Western nations, including France, have been complaining about the group’s activities in other nations, particularly African ones.

French President Emmanuel Macron lashed out at Wagner in February, accusing it of having “predatory intentions” for the continent, specifically in another former French colony, Mali.

This week, Paris pulled out its last 130 soldiers from CAR, its Defense Ministry announced on Thursday. France deployed hundreds of troops in the country in the wake of the 2013 armed coup and civil war, which was the seventh French military mission in the country since it declared its independence in the 1960s. It formally ended Operation Sangaris in 2016, but left a residual military presence

On March 11, 2020, bioMérieux announced the finalization of their real-time PCR SARS-COV-2 R-GENE test. The company also announced the development of a fully automated test based on the BioFire FilmArray technology with the support of the United States Department of Defense. Lastly, bioMérieux launched development on an expanded version of its BioFire FilmArray Respiratory Panel 2. The new version included SARS-CoV-2 in addition to the 21 other common respiratory pathogens and delivered results in approximately 45 minutes. After this announcement, Labrador issued a statement claiming that when it filed the lawsuit against BioFire it had no idea BioFire was developing COVID-19 testing kits. Fortress Investment Group, parent company to Labrador, offered to grant both the defendants and anyone else a royalty-free license for its technology for use in COVID-19 tests. bioMérieux and BioFire declined Labrador's offer.

In June 2021, bioMérieux launched EPISEQ SARS-COV-2, a cloud-based software application for the epidemiological surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 variants. The application identifies variants based on international nomenclatures, including any new variant of concern (VOC), and is compatible with three major sequencing platforms (Illumina, Oxford Nanopore, Thermo Fisher).

Arizona judge sets evidentiary hearing in Kari Lake v. Katie Hobbs case for next week

After gubernatorial GOP candidate Kari Lake filed a lawsuit challenging the outcome of the Arizona election, a judge called for an emergency hearing Tuesday morning that resulted in the case moving forward.

The Tuesday hearing was set on an accelerated basis by Judge Peter Thompson because of its relevance to the election. While Lake appeared in the virtual hearing with representatives, Hobbs and other Maricopa County officials did not attend the meeting but rather had representatives in their place.

The judge determined more evidence necessary, and set an evidentiary hearing in Lake v. Hobbs – and several other Maricopa County officials – for Dec. 21 and 22. This means both sides will be expected to provide evidence under oath.

Hobbs' side will attempt to dismiss the entire case, which requires another hearing set for Monday. If the judge does not grant the motion to dismiss, then the evidentiary hearing will proceed as scheduled next Wednesday and Thursday.

"Today’s hearing regarding my lawsuit was telling. The Judge noted the volume of evidence my team compiled. The defendants’ team seemed desperate to sweep it under the rug," Lake said. "I am thankful to Judge Peter Thompson and his team for the work they do and we are confident that given the opportunity, we will expose this election for the sham it was."

In Lake's filed election complaint filled with evidence, she asserts that due to "intentional" election-day anomalies, voters were disenfranchised and suppressed. She calls for a forensic audit of the printer issues and an inspection of ballot and voter registration records.

"Our sacred vote was trampled on. Every Arizonan should be furious, regardless of Party. Despite the desperate lies by the Fake News, my team has filed one of the strongest Election Lawsuits in history," Lake said in a statement.

Arizona Judge Peter Thompson issued an order Tuesday for Arizona Republican gubernatorial nominee Kari Lake and Governor-elect Katie Hobbs to appear in court regarding the election lawsuit filed by Lake.

“The Court has reviewed Plaintiffs’ Verified Statement of Election Contest filed December 9, 2022. Because this matter is an election challenge, the return hearing will be set on an accelerated basis,” according to Thompson.

Aside from Lake and Hobbs, Maricopa Count Stephen Richer, Board of Supervisor members Bill Gates, Clint Hickman, Jack Sellers, Thomas Galvin, and Steve Gallardo, and Director of Elections Scott Jarrett were also called to appear. The order stated that the appearance would be held over a video conference at 11 am on Tuesday. The hearing was not for arguing the case but for setting up the logistics of the case moving forward.

The Arizona Sun Times reached out to the Lake campaign for a comment but did not receive a response before publishing time.

Although the hearing was not able to start right at 11 due to technical errors and heavy online traffic, the livestream was able to begin before the noon hour.

Lake appeared in the virtual court alongside her representatives, although Hobbs and the other Maricopa County officials did not make an appearance, only having representatives in their place.

Andy Gaona, representing Hobbs, declared the intentions on behalf of the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office to dismiss this case by Thursday. Oral arguments are set for Monday, and an evidentiary hearing is set for December 21st and 22nd.

As reported by The Sun Times, Lake’s 70-page complaint contests the results of the 2022 General Election because voters were disenfranchised and suppressed due to “intentional” election day anomalies.

The complaint also alleges hundreds of thousands of vote-by-mail ballots deposited into drop boxes or returned through the United States Postal Service (USPS) and delivered to a third-party vendor, Runbeck Election Services, on election day. The issue was that chain of custody forms required to document the handling of these ballots were nonexistent, according to the complaint.

Lake ultimately calls for a forensic audit of the printer issues, an inspection of ballot and voter registration records, disqualification of illegal votes, and redoing the election.

“This lawsuit puts an end to any doubt that our elections, especially in Maricopa County, are rigged and massive reforms are needed if the public is ever to trust the results again.” Lake said in a statement shared with reporters, “Our sacred vote was trampled on. Every Arizonan should be furious, regardless of Party. Despite the desperate lies by the Fake News, my team has filed one of the strongest Election Lawsuits in history.”

Kari Lake Files Lawsuit Loaded with Evidence Contesting Election Results

Two weeks after filing a complaint requesting data from the 2022 midterm election in Maricopa County, gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake has filed another lawsuit against election officials contesting the election results, alleging voter disenfranchisement and suppression. Lake called for a forensic audit of the printer-tabulator problems, an inspection of ballots and voter registration records, including signatures, disqualification of illegal votes, and redoing the election as well as other relief.

Kurt Olsen, one of the attorneys who filed the lawsuit, told The Arizona Sun Times he believes the election anomalies were “intentional since they didn’t test all of their equipment and follow the appropriate processes when problems arose.” He asked, “Why haven’t they done their own forensic audit 30 days later?”

He said Maricopa County officials’ cavalier attitude about the problems and their lack of trying to find out what happened is telling. “Does anybody believe this widespread failure, oh shucks, just happened?” he wondered.

The complaint alleged that the number of illegal votes cast in the election “far exceeds the 17,117 vote margin” between the two candidates, a difference of .67 percent. It said Democrat Katie Hobbs did not receive the highest number of votes due to illegal votes.

Clay Parikh, a cyber expert who has extensive experience performing security tests on voting systems, including the type used in Maricopa County, stated that due to the lack of certification of some of the voting systems, the numerous procedural violations, the widespread failure of the tabulation process, the failure to provide proper instructions to handle the problem after it started, and the incorrect explanations given to the public, the election failures “can only be described as intentional.”

The complaint alleged that “tens of thousands of mail-in and drop box ballots” did not satisfy signature requirements. Three Maricopa County signature verification employees signed affidavits stating that they rejected signatures as mismatching up to 40 percent of the time. However, when they showed up for work the next day, they would see only about 10 percent of those ballots reappear for signature curing. One of the reviewers believes a manager was approving the mismatched ballots instead.

The complaint cited a previous report by Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, which found that the early ballot signature verification used by Maricopa County “may be insufficient to guard against abuse.” An analysis found that bad signatures were rejected 14 times more often during the August primary Election in Maricopa County than during the 2020 General Election.

The lawsuit alleged that between 15,603 and 29,257 Republicans were disenfranchised who would have voted for Lake, according to a calculation performed by data analyst Richard Baris of Big Data Poll who surveyed voters about whether they experienced problems on Election Day. Due to the extremely high numbers of Republicans voting in person on election day, those votes were expected to fall 70 percent to Lake, 30 percent to Hobbs.

The complaint stated that 132 of the county’s 223 vote centers, or 59 percent, were affected, far more than the 70 acknowledged by county officials. It went over county election officials minimizing the problem, refusing to acknowledge the full extent of it, such as the long lines or how long it continued into the day, and provided affidavits from voters regarding how long they waited in line. It cited testimony regarding numerous voters who left without voting. The lawsuit also cited commingling the misread ballots, known as “Door 3” ballots, with tabulated ballots.

The complaint stated that “hundreds of thousands” of mail-in ballots lacked a chain of custody. It said over 298,942 ballots delivered to third-party signature verification service Runbeck on Election Day lacked a chain of custody, a class 2 misdemeanor. A Runbeck employee and other observers provided affidavits regarding witnessing this. The Runbeck employee also stated there were at least 9,530 duplicate ballots printed and issued with no chain of custody. Two days after the election, 25,000 more ballots were found which lacked a chain of custody.

The lawsuit cited an investigation into the 2020 election conducted by We the People AZ Alliance (WPAA), which found many incidents where Arizonans discovered they had been registered to vote or their voter registration had been changed, unbeknownst to them. WPAA reviewed 12.12 percent of the signatures on ballot envelopes in the Maricopa County 2020 election and found that 18,022 were clearly mismatches, and 19,631 failed the Arizona Secretary of State’s standards. This translated to 156,000 likely mismatches countywide and 165,600 failing the standards, yet the county only rejected 587 ballots for mismatched signatures. WPAA discovered that thousands of those same voters voted again in the 2022 election.

The complaint cited free speech violations, pointing to an information-sharing program that Hobbs, Maricopa County Election officials and Richer participated in to provide information to the Election Misinformation Reporting Portal created by the Department of Homeland Security and the Cybersecurity and Information Security Agency. It showed how Hobbs and other officials got election information censored on Twitter and other social media platforms.

The complaint cited a recent Rasmussen Reports poll which found that 72 percent of voters don’t trust Arizona’s election results.

Olsen told The Sun Times that although it’s impossible to trace back the ballots to the voters at this stage, it’s not required by the law to show that the unlawful votes would have gone to a particular candidate.

Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Peter Thompson has been assigned to the case. The exhibits to the lawsuit will be available soon at SaveArizonaFund.com, Lake’s team said.

If the inauguration of Hobbs takes place, a court can still change the results, as took place in 1916 in a disputed gubernatorial election. Abe Hamadeh, the Republican candidate for Attorney General who trailed his opponent Kris Mayes by 511 votes, filed a lawsuit on Friday, as did Mark Finchem, the Republican candidate for Secretary of State who trailed his opponent Adrian Fontes by 120,208 votes.

Kissinger outlines Ukraine peace proposal

Elder US statesman invoked the missed opportunity to negotiate an end to WWI in 1916

Urgently negotiating an end to hostilities in Ukraine would prevent another world war, former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger argued in an essay published on Friday. The 99-year-old statesman noted that, in 1916, the US government had the chance to end the First World War through diplomacy, but missed it for reasons of domestic politics.

Kissinger laid out his reasoning in the December 17 issue of The Spectator, describing the current conflict as a “war in which two nuclear powers contest a conventionally armed country,” a clear reference to Ukraine being a proxy war between the US and Russia.

The “peace process” Kissinger proposes would “link Ukraine to NATO, however expressed,” as he believes neutrality for Kiev is no longer an option. He also wants Russia to withdraw to the lines before February 24, while the other territories Ukraine claims – Donetsk, Lugansk and Crimea – “could be the subject of a negotiation after a ceasefire.”

In addition to “confirming the freedom of Ukraine,” the arrangement would strive to “define a new international structure, especially for Central and Eastern Europe,” in which Russia should “eventually” find a place, he explained.

While some would prefer “a Russia rendered impotent by the war,” Kissinger disagrees, arguing that Moscow’s “historical role should not be degraded.” Dismantling Russia could turn its vast territory into a “contested vacuum,” where “competing societies might decide to settle their disputes by violence” and neighbors could seek to claim territory by force, all in the presence of “thousands of nuclear weapons.”

In substance, this is the same proposal Kissinger had first floated in May, for which he was labeled an enemy of Ukraine and added to the notorious ‘Peacemaker’ kill list. In an interview earlier this month, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky categorically rejected any sort of ceasefire that did not take Kiev’s claimed 1991 borders as the starting point.

What’s fresh in Kissinger’s Spectator essay is his reasoning. He points to August 1916, at the height of the First World War, when the warring powers sought US mediation to end the unprecedented bloodshed. Though “a peace based on the modified status quo ante was within reach,” President Woodrow Wilson delayed the talks until after he could get re-elected in November. By then it was too late, and the war would go on for two more years, “irretrievably damaging Europe’s established equilibrium.”

Asked about Kissinger’s proposal, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russian President Vladimir Putin was “eager to give the article a thorough reading,” but “hasn’t had a chance to do so yet, unfortunately.”

Russia sent troops into Ukraine on February 24, citing Kiev’s failure to implement the Minsk agreements, designed to give the regions of Donetsk and Lugansk special status within the Ukrainian state. The Kremlin demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that would never join any Western military bloc. Kiev insists the Russian offensive was completely unprovoked.

Estonia’s defense ministry has announced the arrival of an American infantry company as part of NATO’s presence in the country

A United States infantry company arrived in Estonia this week as part of NATO’s effort to boost its deterrence on the military alliance’s eastern border, the Baltic country’s defense ministry has revealed.

A statement published on the ministry’s website on Friday said that US service members are stationed at Taara base in the town of Voru. One of their primary tasks is to train Estonian military personnel and enhance the two armies’ interoperability.

Commenting on the US service members’ arrival, Colonel Mati Tikerpuu, the commander of the 2nd Infantry Brigade of the Estonian Defense Forces, said he expects to be able to “integrate our allies on a brigade level and gain an additional maneuver unit.”

Colonel Richard Ikena, US 1st Infantry Division Artillery Commander, said American troops are “excited to be in Estonia” and “look forward to working shoulder-to-shoulder, alongside our Allies.”

Poland Demands Answers After 'Gift' Police Chief Received From Ukraine Officials Exploded

Poland's police chief Jaroslaw Szymczyk was hospitalized after a "gift" package that he received exploded, according to international reports, after a recent string of similar exploding mail and package incidents across Europe believed related to the war in Ukraine.

On Thursday Poland's Interior Ministry confirmed, "Yesterday at 7:50 a.m., an explosion occurred in a room adjacent to the office of the Police Chief." It's said that Szymczyk only sustained minor injuries. "During the Police Chief's working visit to Ukraine on December 11-12 this year, where he met with the heads of the Ukrainian Police and Emergency Situations Service, he received some gifts, one of which exploded," the statement detailed.

But that's precisely what's different and more bizarre about this case, compared to the anonymous threatening packages and in some cases mail bombs which have been sent to embassies and consulates in Europe over the past month which authorities have been scrambling to track down: the exploding "gift" actually came from one of the heads of the Ukrainian services, according to the Polish government.

"As a result of the explosion, the Commander suffered minor injuries and has been in the hospital for observation since yesterday," the ministry followed with.

Initially Polish investigators didn't reveal precisely what the gift was, leaving open the question of whether the Ukrainian side had intentionally given him an 'exploding gift'.

However, follow-up reports in Polish media said that it was a grenade launcher, thus it appears to have been an accident based on faulty or volatile munitions - or else Polish police may have been handling the weapon improperly indoors. Polish outlet Wyborcza reported [machine translation]:

According to unofficial reports, the cause of the explosion was the launch of a grenade launcher, which was kept in the "secret room" mentioned by the spokesman. Fresh Missile Barrage Leaves Cities Across Ukraine Without Power Or Water In Sub-Zero Temps

"Another wave of massive Russian attacks on energy infrastructure," Ukraine's Energy Minister German Galushchenko announced Friday, describing a large Russian barrage of dozens of missiles across major cities. "There will be emergency power outages," he added.

Air raid sirens have been blaring throughout the day in this latest wave of strikes, which resulted in electricity and water outages in multiple cities and towns amid sub-zero temperatures.

Commander of Ukraine’s Armed Forces Gen. Valeriy Zaluzhnyi tallied that Russia launched 76 missiles at critical infrastructure throughout the country. He then claimed that national air defenses were able to intercept and down a whopping 60 of the missiles.

More attacks rocked the capital as well. "Due to damage to energy infrastructure, there are interruptions to water supplies in all areas of the capital," a statement by Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko indicated. City authorities temporarily halted metro lines in order to provide a place for residents to take cover underground while the attacks ensued.

Ukraine's second-largest city of Kharkiv is also completely without electricity, as are the the central cities of Poltava and Kremenchuk, among others. Ukrenergo, the national electric utility, said this has forced the country into a continued rationing situation as emergency crews work around the clock.

"We ask for your understanding regarding the power outages and temporary water and heat supply interruptions," a statement from President Zelensky's office said.

Justin Trudeau asks Twitter followers for questions — and it immediately backfires

Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau took to Twitter to ask followers for any questions they could think of after, according to him, conducting many interviews with media outlets before the end of 2022.

“Hey, everyone," the prime minister said. "As we approach the end of the year, I’ve been doing a lot of interviews with TV stations, with newspapers, with radio stations,” he said in the 14-second post.

“They’ve had a lot of great questions. But I know you do too. So, let’s hear them,” he finished.

With many wondering why the prime minister all of a sudden wants to answer questions or simply responding with images of him in blackface, it's hard to imagine why Trudeau's team thought it was a good idea to open the leader up to criticism from commentators, journalists, and creators from across the political spectrum.

The results were less than satisfying for the PM.

Popular French-Canadian YouTuber and candidate for the People's Party of CanadaViva Frei asked the Liberal if this was simply another provocation or antagonism:

"Is this AMA - like your invocation of Emergencies Act - merely an act of further antagonism / provocation of a population that you have been systematically abusing for the last few years, in an attempt to get people angry and lash out at your regime?"

Commentator Luke Rudkowski, who describes himself as an anarchist, criticized Trudeau for freezing the bank accounts of those who donated to the massive freedom protests in the winter of 2022.

"What gives you the moral authority to steal peoples bank accounts for criticizing you?" Rudkowski asked.

Reporter Savanah Hernandez simply asked, "Why are you such a tyrant?"

Journalist Keean Bexte, who has had frequent interactions with the prime minister, questioned his bank balance, asking, "What has caused your net worth to explode over the course of the pandemic?"

Justin Trudeau told his audience to "stay tuned," implying he will be addressing some of his more favorable questions.

Biden admin seeks to make citizenship test multiple choice, add new material

On Wednesday, the Biden administration's Department of Homeland Security announced plans to conduct a trial for alterations to the current U.S. citizenship test, including changing responses to multiple choice and adding new material.

Currently, the naturalization test has four separate components: reading, writing, civics, and English speaking. To pass the test, applicants must answer six of 10 questions correctly. The questions are pulled from a bank of 100 possible questions.

The current citizenship test asks applicants to answer the questions orally. Alternatively, the redesigned trial test will have applicants choose an answer from four multiple-choice options shown on a tablet.

The switch to multiple choice would "be consistent with the industry standard and best practice and increase standardization of test questions," according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

The notice published in the Federal Register stated that the trial would not make any changes to the reading and writing portions of the test. Instead, the trial's purpose is to make formatting and content changes to the civics component and add a new English-speaking component.

"The trial test will also contain new test items based on a design framework that includes an external review by subject matter experts in the field of test development," the notice stated. However, it did not clarify what new testing items would be added.

The trial speaking test will ask applicants to describe three color photographs from a bank of approximately 70 images. The photographs will depict everyday scenarios such as activities, weather, and food.

USCIS plans to conduct the trial in 2023 over five months. The agency aims to recruit 1,500 participants in adult education classes to participate in the trial. If the trial is successful, the new components could become standard and be implemented in late 2024.

"The naturalization test is a key step in becoming a U.S. citizen," said USCIS Director Ur M. Jaddou. "We welcome input from – and the participation of – stakeholders who are familiar with this important process, as we continue to improve and update our naturalization test, ensuring that it is consistent with industry testing standards."

Previously, the Trump administration suggested changes to the naturalization test, requiring applicants to correctly answer 12 of 20 questions to pass. The Biden administration dismissed that proposal.

FBI Reveals it has More Information on Slain DNC Staffer Seth Rich But Won't Release Most of it for 66 YEARS

The FBI not only has possession of a laptop computer owned by Democratic National Committee (DNC) staffer Seth Rich—who was murdered in 2016 by unknown assailants—but a report detailing forensic imaging of what’s being described as Rich’s work computer, the bureau revealed in a new filing.

The FBI’s records office located the report while searching for the work computer, Michael Seidel, chief of the office, said in a sworn declaration filed with a federal court in Texas on Dec. 9.

He described the document as “a three (3) page forensic report detailing the actions performed by an outside entity to image the work laptop.”

The report was among four documents that never had been disclosed by the FBI in relation to Rich’s case.

Journalist Sy Hersh said a source told him around 2017 about an FBI report on Rich. According to the source, Rich’s computer showed the DNC staffer had relayed DNC documents to WikiLeaks, a pro-transparency group. Hersh spoke about the source’s claims during a phone call with Ed Butowsky, an investor who later retracted claims about Rich’s brother Aaron being a WikiLeaks source, and discussed the call during a deposition.

Rich, the DNC’s voter expansion data director, was shot in the early morning of July 10, 2016, near his home in Washington. Rich’s murder remains unsolved. Authorities have claimed that the killing was a robbery gone wrong. Julian Assange, the head of WikiLeaks, has suggested that Rich passed DNC files to the group, which released the DNC files in 2016. U.S. authorities have alleged that Russians hacked into the DNC systems, but those allegations were made before the FBI received images from the DNC’s server to determine their validity.

The Metropolitan Police Department is the lead investigating agency into the death. It has declined to say whether the FBI was helping with the probe into Rich’s death.

NEW RECORDS

The new records were found after the records office contacted an unnamed FBI special agent during its search for Rich’s work computer, according to Seidel.

The other records include a letter from a third party that accompanied the work computer and two FBI chain of custody forms.

None of the records were indexed to Rich inside of the bureau’s central records system, and neither the forensic report nor the custody forms mention Rich’s name, according to the FBI. They also weren’t included in an electronic file created for Rich’s case.

The agent claimed that disclosure of the records would harm an FBI investigation into the allegations that Russians had hacked into U.S. systems.

The FBI now wants the court to agree to keep the new records shielded from Brian Huddleston, a Texas resident who filed a lawsuit against the bureau for ignoring a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for records on Rich.

Bureau officials initially claimed in sworn statements that the FBI had searched for records on Rich but didn’t locate any.

In 2020, for the first time, the FBI admitted it had files from a computer belonging to Rich. Some of those files were then released to Huddleston and made public, including documents that appear to suggest that someone could have paid for his death.

The FBI has said it has images from a second computer owned by Rich, which the bureau described as Rich’s personal laptop. A federal judge in September ordered the bureau to hand the images over to Huddleston, finding that the bureau improperly withheld them.
