For many Ukrainian refugees, Romania is a safe place to rest for a few days before attempting to reach friends and family in other EU countries. The over 616,000 refugees are being met by tens of thousands of Romanian volunteers who have mobilized to arrange transport, and offering shelter for those who need to stay.
In addition to the over 4 million Ukrainians who have fled, over 203,000 third-country nationals also had to flee. Some of these refugees have reported discrimination and racism from Ukrainian border officials as they tried to leave Ukraine—including reports of West African students being pushed back in bus queues. Safe passage must be provided to all affected by this war, including Ukrainian citizens and residents of color, citizens from other region, and Russian and Belarusian dissidents forced to leave their countries.
