C is for Carlos
In June 2014, Juan Carlos, citing personal reasons, abdicated in favour of his son, who acceded to the throne as Felipe VI. Since August 2020, Juan Carlos has lived in self-imposed exile from Spain over allegedly improper ties to business deals in Saudi Arabia.[6][7]
A Panamanian Lucum foundation had Juan Carlos as the first beneficiary and King Felipe VI as a named second beneficiary,[111] although King Felipe VI has subsequently relinquished any inheritance from his father Juan Carlos.[116] Lucum received $100 million from the Saudi royal house in 2008.[116] Swiss prosecutors are concerned about who at the Swiss bank, Mirabaud & Cie, knows who the account was for and what was discovered about the source of the funds from the Ministry of Finance of Saudi Arabia.[117] They are also concerned about a transfer of €3.5m from Lucum to an account held by Dante Canónica in the Bahamas.[116] In 2012 the Mirabaud bank, which had concealed from its employees the beneficial owner of the account,[118] asked for the account to be closed, due to possible adverse publicity; this was when the bulk of the funds were transferred to Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn.
C is for Corinna zu sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn
She became the mistress of Spanish King Juan Carlos I in 2004.[16][17] News of her relationship with the king made international headlines in April 2012.[2] She arranged and accompanied the monarch on an elephant-hunting safari at the Duke of Westminster's estate in Botswana.[2][5] The elephant-hunting trip she arranged came at an expense of €40,000 which was paid by Mohammed Eyad Kayali, advisor to the Saudi royal family, who, like zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn, was named in the 2016 Panama Papers as the head of 15 offshore companies.[18][neutrality is disputed] When the King fell, broke his hip and had to have emergency surgery, their affair was exposed via increased media scrutiny.[5][18]
In 2012, King Juan Carlos transferred around €65m to her as 'a gift'.[19]
