December 20, 2022
On Monday evening the City of Milton, Georgia, voted unanimously to take responsibility for all municipal elections, away from Fulton County, Georgia, control.
“Estimated savings for just a general election in Milton in 2023, three council members, we’llsave over a quarter of a million dollars of taxpayer moneyif we do this ourselves.”, according to Milton City Council member, Rick Mohrig, speaking to a City Hall packed with citizens from Milton and neighboring jurisdictions.
After more than seventeen months of examination and due diligenceaided by a grassroots group of local citizens, the Milton City Council discovered they could save significant cost while also complying with all Georgia state election laws. More importantly, they could take proactive measures to ensure far greater accuracy of its’ voter rolls and implement paper balloting.
The vote was to approve the detailed plan as constructed, which 100% excludes machines, scanners, devices, etc. This vote was to approve the detailed plan as submitted (paper ballots) and authorized the position of a Municipal Elections Supervisor (paid or volunteer position.)
Milton, Georgia, is a city founded in 2006 and located in North Fulton County. It has just over 30,000 registered voters and ranks as one of the cities with highest per capita income in the State. Neighboring cities include Roswell, Alpharetta and Johns Creek, each of which have shown interest in the outcome of the Milton City decision.
Milton City Mayor, Peyton Jamison, stated, “I went into this (process) with an open mind from the very beginning. Sometimes, you know, the easy thing is to allow Fulton County to continue to do what they are doing, and that’s the easy thing. But sometimes when you have to take the lead on things you have to do the hard thing.“ Jameson continued, “Every Mayor in Fulton County is looking at us. They want to see if we can do something successfully. I have all the faith in our city staff that we’re going to give them all the resources to get this done, in a secure way, in a way to save everyone money, and this is something that is inevitable with a lot of municipalities.“
As the motion to vote on this new election measure was seconded and then passed by a unanimous voice vote, the City Hall attendees erupted in applause.
