DUH! it's a positive-sense single strand RNA virus. it has no mechanism to prevent mutation when it replicates. essentially every time an infected person passes it on, they are creating a new variant.

that's a good thing, and explains why epidemics (real ones) naturally disappear all on their own. if the variant is more deadly, the infected person dies and is much less likely to pass it on to others.

if the variant is milder, the infected person passes it on to many more people, establishing herd immunity, at which point the disease effectively disappears.

ALL infectious diseases follow this pattern. this is immunology/pathology 101.
