historically they never really existed as a country. as a political entity, it was created when it was annexed by the USSR, and again later, following the dissolution of the USSR. for most of the past five or six centuries that land was either part of the polish empire or the russian empire, which were more or less constantly at war for hundreds of years. didn't you ever wonder why people called it THE ukraine? we never say THE italy, or THE spain do we? "the" is only ever used in reference to an area described by a particular trait, like THE rockies, or THE great plains, or THE amazon, or THE steppes, or THE veldt. so WTF does "ukraine" even mean. well the closest words in russian are THE STOLEN LAND. so there you have it.

first day each new semester, i asked the entire class why they came to college. all hands were raised and the unanimous answer was, "to get an education." at which point i told them they were badly misinformed. educations are free. they're called library cards (or nowadays, the interwebz). college is where you go to BUY a diploma, based on the hope that it will enable you to get a higher paying job than you could get without it. not just more, but a job that pays a LOT more, enough to justify the expense of the outrageously expensive diploma. the majority were always taken aback. inevitably someone would say, but we need a teacher. and i told them, NO, you DON'T. neither i nor any other teacher can learn for you. only you can do that. my primary function is to give tests and keep score. i'm a glorified bookkeeper. you've been in school for 12+ yrs, haven't you figured this out yet? my classes quickly bifurcated. 90% loved hearing the truth. 10% dropped my course early. wherever i taught, the admin always hated me, and any other teacher who dared to tell students the truth about education.

not sure how you mean that… in my field "researcher" meant willing to work 70+ hrs per week, 52 weeks per year, for 4+ yrs, for minimal stipend plus tuition.
