The photos of the balloon's truss structure are a little puzzling. The power generation for the sensor package or payload is clearly solar, and there is quite a bit of it, but when you look at the payload at the center of the truss it's extremely small and the largest visible piece of it is a HF dish. I would expect any sort of EMP generator or LIDAR apparatus to be bigger. I think this thing is the geopolitical equivalent of the proverbial shiny object.

 

If they shoot it down and it turns out to be a spare parts kit bash with nothing of actual value aboard I'm going to laugh my ass off.

It's Saturday, it's a flight of one, and it's at 23k doing 250 kt's headed up the coast. Someone sure wants us to think that's what's happening or it wouldn't be visible.
