these fuckers must have believed that, either:
(1) they are absolutely and at all times above the law in the US, so it doesn't really matter if they were to be proven to have lied or not;
(2) they have nothing to lose since they are fucked, so do anything to win now and hope for the best later;
(3) they still retained enough power over media and agencies to prevent the eventual release of the truth (squash the HB inquiries);
and/or
(4) they would re-establish the power over #3 that they had lost under Trump
I'm betting #3 or 4.
The House speakership was huge, as it establishes a beachhead to push real investigations forward. As such, people are starting to freak out and try to get ahead of them by selectively leaking to try and frame what will eventually be uncovered.
The point being, none of this would have likely come out if the House wasn't taken and, more importantly, Trump didn't get his people to establish a friendly speaker.
