Bloomberg:
"To Get People to Wear Masks, TryComparing Them to Seatbelts and Helmets"
A new survey looks at what the government can do to influence mask-wearing. Only one message had any positive effect.
"The sample comparison message that was tested featured a Facebook-style post with three image panels: seatbelt before driving, with a photo of a buckle and latch; helmet before game, with a photo of a football helmet; and mask before going out, with a photo of a mask."
"One set of experiments bypsychologists, which will be published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science, found that the most persuasive arguments focused on the benefits of helping others. This study tested moral arguments and didn’t try any law-and-order safety message. This kind of help-others messaging wasadopted in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s slogan.
"Theworst-performing messageshowed the World Health Organization finding that masks may reduce Covid-19 spread by 85% andincluded text that began, “The science is clear.”That strategy led to a 3 percentage point decrease in mask-wearing likelihood as compared to the control group.
"The other message with anegative effectshowed images of people wearing masks with text over it that read,“If it gets us out, we’re all in,”with smaller text explaining that wearing a mask lets people get out of the house. …

And though not a study, POLITICO observes, "The MAGA Masks Bringing Americans Together"as early as MAY of 2020!!!
As they grudgingly follow requirements, some Trump supporters say, a mask with Trump branding somehow eases the blow.

______
Anon synthesis: With all of the unknowns about the supposedly worldwide deathly murderous pandemic in mid-to-late 2020 and early 2021, there sure were a lot of dollars spent and people spending time and energy studying and writing about "mask resistance" and how to overcome it among the MAGA crowd and evangelical Christians. Money and time and effort that would no doubt have been better spent - even without the benefit of hindsight - assessing the bizarre claims made by CDC and Fauci about
(a) masks not being effective and then switching and saying take a t-shirt and cut it up and put it over you face and mouth and inhale those fibers and sweat-whisking chemicals into your lungs (and other never-tested fabrics - some with ironed-on vinyl decals - for the harm from inhaling through them, let alone the complete lack of effectiveness in stopping a tiny virus particle),
(b) the absolute silence on natural immunity (except to say take the vaccine anyway - which is bad medical advice even if the vax were not dangerous),
(c) research into therapeutics and the bizarre, over-the-top, coordinated medical, political, media, professional licensing attacks on therapeutics (which if any one were effective, the FDA emergency-use authorization for a brand new, untested vaccine could not have issued),
(d) the diabolical-sounding "needle in every arm" and raised voices, smears, attacks from every angle of those who hesitated or refused to vax or mask, and
(e) a thousand other inconsistencies, common sense affronts, provably false statements, and bullying tactics
-all pointing to the inevitable conclusion that there was something significantly wrong with the over-the-top rhetoric and fear mongering.
Instead, research time, money and effort was being spent on how to manipulate "the resistent," i.e, those who did not respond to the initial barrage of fear-mongering, to cajole them (instead of scare them) into complying with different patriotic, religious, care-for-others-if-not-yourself moral, or political, "messaging" about masking, social distancing, and later the vaccines.
