While not mentioning Trump by name, the CEO of the Kochs' main political arm offered a not-so-subtle jab at the former president, who during his tenure often sparred with Koch officials over his administration's trade and immigration policies.

The move, first reported by The Washington Post, comes asthe donor group created by the billionaire industrialist brothers elected to sit out the two most recent GOP elections, where Trump, 76, twice surfaced as a frontrunner.

Emily Seidel - head executive of Koch's Americans for Prosperity - wrote that the group seeks to 'turn the page on the past' and 'write a new chapter for our country' with its newly announced political backing.

'The loudest voice in each political party sets the tone for the entire election,' Seidel wrote, before adding, 'In a presidential year, that's the presidential candidate.

'And to write a new chapter for our country,' she continued, we need to turn the page on the past. So. the best thing for the country would be to have a president in 2025 who represents a new chapter.'

Seidel would go on to cite 'the broken politics' and 'toxic situation' she said were major influencers in the grassroots group's choice to back a nameless, non-Trump candidate's prospective bid for president.

US Economy Actually Lost 2.5 Million Jobs in January – Reported as a “Gain” of 517,000

The mainstream media cheered the news that the U.S. economy added 517,000 jobs last month. Sadly, that just isn’t true. According to reports and the St. Louis Federal Reserve, the US economy actually lost 2.5 million jobs in January.

Via Rich Dvorak: “The Not Seasonally Adjusted print for monthly change in Nonfarm Payrolls was -2.5 million jobs. That means the headline +517K employment gain reported in January was driven entirely by a +3 million seasonal adjustment.”

Investigators learned five tank cars in the derailment were carrying vinyl chloride. The NTSB said they are slowly releasing it into the air, which means safety release devices on the tankers are doing their job.

"One of the cars is releasing some of its pressure, and that is normal; that's how that car is designed to keep it from exploding or anything like that," Graham said.

Conaway said they're being told they need to let the fire burn.

Investigators and specialists are still identifying other chemicals in the cars, using drones and other technology in the process.

The NTSB and specialists from the Federal Rail Administration will also dig through video and data recorders from the train cars once they can.

"The locomotives were equipped with forward-facing image recorders and event data recorders. Event data recorders could provide investigators with information such as train speed, throttle position, and brake applications," Graham said.

Graham said the speed limit on the track is 45 miles per hour.

A federal investigation is officially underway, but it is the start of a long process.

"Our team methodically and systematically reviews all evidence and considers all potential factors to determine the probable cause and make any necessary, safety recommendations," Graham said.

In the meantime, local leaders urge the public to stay back.

"You're putting yourself and us in danger. Stop," Drabick said. "Let us handle the situation. All we want is the safety of the citizens and residents."

Conaway said they will consider taking action against anyone who sneaks past the barriers.

A preliminary report on the accident is expected in four-to-six weeks, while a full NTSB investigation report will not be finalized for another 18-to-24 months.

Village leaders said the water could have a slight discoloration, but it is safe, and crews are continuing to test it. They also said people are not allowed to fly personal drones in and around the area.

According to the mayor, at least ten businesses remain closed near the crash site. Conaway said it happened near a Marathon Fuel gas station and right behind a home heating oil supplier. Fire crews quickly took steps to protect those businesses, along with others in the area, removing any items of concern, like fuel products.

On Saturday, the mayor clarified that no structures were damaged. Earlier he said one caught fire that crews quickly knocked down.

As for the strain this has put on the small village, Conaway said they're working together with the surrounding agencies.

"We have great first responders, police, and fire department. We have a great crew," Conaway said. "We get along with all the neighboring towns, police, and fire so you know, it's a big brotherhood here."

It's not exactly the type of incident they're used to.

"It's a very big event. Not many people have seen this in their history, in their careers as firefighters, so this is something they're coming into that's you know, you can train for it, but you really can't train for something this big," Conaway said.

KDKA crews on the scene witnessed trucks hauling in new train tracks to the village throughout the afternoon and evening Saturday. Officials said Norfolk Southern is staging to prepare for the time they can go in and repair the tracks.

Norfolk Southern also established a Family Assistance Center at the East Palestine City Park Community Center. It will be open on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The evacuation center at East Palestine Jr. Sr. High School is also still open and is staffed by the American Red Cross.

The public can call 211 for updates on the situation in the village.

Raven Aerostar wins DoD contract to display stratospheric balloon utilities

Raven Industries subsidiary Aerostar Technical Solutions (Raven Aerostar) has received a contract to demonstrate the utility of stratospheric balloons for different US Department of Defense (DoD) operational requirements.

The contract was awarded by the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), a DoD unit that focuses on organising commercial technology for the US military.

As agreed, Raven Aerostar will conduct several service-driven prototyping and field utility demonstrations to display the capabilities of the stratospheric balloons.

It will start by integrating the prototype communication nodes onto Raven Aerostar’s Thunderhead Balloon Systems.

The Thunderhead Balloon Systems are able to carry sensors, payloads and other technologies, allowing for data collection during the stratospheric flight. This capability will help the DoD to analyse data and improve situational awareness that will benefit the warfighter on the battlefield.

Raven Aerostar division manager Jim Nelson said: “Our Thunderhead Balloons can be tailored to solve critical national security challenges.

“As the technology continues to prove its value, this contract will serve as a vehicle for Raven Aerostar to support future prototype activities across the Department of Defense and the government more broadly.”

The demonstrations are expected to allow the DIU to assess the feasibility of using Raven Aerostar’s stratospheric technology for live military field operations.

Raven Aerostar focus on manufacturing aerospace and defence solutions.

Raven Industries has two additional subsidiaries, namely Aerostar International and Aerostar Technical Solutions.

Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy relied on this provision to deploy troops to desegregate schools in the South after the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Brown v. Board of Education.

The second part of Section 253 permits the president to deploy troops to suppress “any insurrection, domestic violence, unlawful combination, or conspiracy” in a state that “opposes or obstructs the execution of the laws of the United States or impedes the course of justice under those laws.” This provision is so bafflingly broad that it cannot possibly mean what it says, or else it authorizes the president to use the military against any two people conspiring to break federal law.

[Given the states lack of ability or lack of will to enforce the election laws, in my opinion, fits within this statute of the Insurrection act. Is that Treason?. In this reading, it would read as conspiracy.]

If an emergency declaration could be construed under the same legal framework as the US Civil war, then the trial of Mary Surrat looks like a framework that could be used. that was UCMJ and she was convicted of 'conspiracy'. Judge Advocate John Bingham presented the closing argument for the prosecution.[166] The military tribunal had jurisdiction, he said, not only because the court itself had ruled at the beginning of the trials that it did but because they were crimes committed in a military zone, during a time of war, and against high government officials in carrying out treasonous activities.

US Ban On Pot Users Owning Guns Ruled Unconstitutional

Another week, another defeat for the gun-grabbers: A federal law barring marijuana users from owning and possessing firearms has been ruled unconstitutional.

In a 54-page ruling in favor of Jared Harrison handed down Friday in Oklahoma, U.S. District Judge Patrick Wyrick said the government cannot claim that Harrison's "mere status as a user of marijuana justifies stripping him of his fundamental right to possess a firearm."

It's the latest of many rulings against gun restrictions that are following in the widening wake of last June's watershed U.S. Supreme Court ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen.

That case established a test that judges across the country must now apply when evaluating gun control laws: Such laws must be "consistent with the nation's historical tradition of firearm ownership."

"The mere use of marijuana carries none of the characteristics that the Nation's history and tradition of firearms regulation supports," wrote Wyrick. Further, "the United States has not identified a single historical law that is 'distinctly similar'" to the one barring marijuana users from possessing firearms.

The DOJ tried to relate the general firearms ban against marijuana users to laws that targeted intoxicated people. Wyrick, a Trump appointee, wasn't having it:

"The restrictions imposed by each law only applied while an individual was actively intoxicated or using intoxicants. Under these laws, no one's right to armed self-defense was restricted based on the mere fact that he or she was a user of intoxicants…

Where the seven [DOJ-cited] laws took a scalpel to the right of armed self-defense, [this marijuana-gun law] takes a sledgehammer to the right."

Harrison's public defender, Laura Deskin, called the ruling a "step in the right direction for a large number of Americans who deserve the right to bear arms and protect their homes just like any other American." The federal goverment is expected to appeal the decision.

Fake Meat Fail: Sales Collapse At Beyond Meat, Impossible Foods As 20% Of Staff Laid Off

The fake meat industry appears to be in a death-spiral as sales at plant-based 'meat' companies Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat have imploded.

As Axios reports, "after years of hype, the tide is turning against the first generation of plant-based protein makers."

Last year, both companies were riding high - with prime placement on supermarket shelves, and Burger King even adding an Impossible Whopper to its menu.

Impossible Meat even began to branch out - looking to expand offerings to highly processed meats such as chicken nuggets and sausages.

Sales have collapsed, however, which according to a recent Bloomberg report, has resulted in Impossible Foods planning to lay off around 20% of its workers.

Impossible Foods Inc., the maker of meatless burgers and sausages, is preparing to cut about 20% of its staff, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The Redwood City, California-based company currently employs about 700 workers. The new round of dismissals could reduce that amount by more than 100.

Impossible Foods also offered voluntary separation payments and benefits to employees at the end of 2022, said the person, who asked not to be named discussing private information. An internal document viewed by Bloomberg confirmed the separation packages being offered. The company previously reduced headcount in October, cutting about 6% of its workforce at the time. -Bloomberg

Beyond Meat's sales fell over 22% in the third quarter of 2022, as the company is preparing to similarly cut 20% of its workers. The company has also lost several executives.

According to the report, supermarket sales fell by 15% y/y as of Jan. 1, according to market-research firm IRI, while orders in restaurants dropped 9% in the12 months ended in November, according to NPD Group.

Meanwhile, data from consumer-experience strategy firm HundredX suggests waning interest in general - as the percentage of shoppers polled who have eaten Impossible products and say they won't do it again has risen.

Beyond Meat stock is also down around 67% vs. one year ago.

Even as President Trump says he tested negative for coronavirus, the COVID-19 pandemic raises the fear that huge swaths of the executive branch or even Congress and the Supreme Court could also be disabled, forcing the implementation of "continuity of government" plans that include evacuating Washington and "devolving" leadership to second-tier officials in remote and quarantined locations.

But Coronavirus is also new territory, where the military itself is vulnerable and the disaster scenarios being contemplated including the possibility of widespread domestic violence as a result of food shortages are forcing planners to look at what are called "extraordinary circumstances".

Above-Top Secret contingency plans already exist for what the military is supposed to do if all the Constitutional successors are incapacitated. Standby orders were issued more than three weeks ago to ready these plans, not just to protect Washington but also to prepare for the possibility of some form of martial law.

According to new documents and interviews with military experts, the various plans – codenamed Octagon, Freejack and Zodiac – are the underground laws to ensure government continuity. They are so secret that under these extraordinary plans, "devolution" could circumvent the normal Constitutional provisions for government succession, and military commanders could be placed in control around America."….

Most people thinking of stealth aircraft probably think about the B-2 Stealth bomber: invisible to radar, fast, sleek, with an estimated price tag of $500 million or more.

Not Carter Ward. When his thoughts turn to stealth aircraft, Ward thinks about something stubby, with a top speed of 28 m.p.h. and costing only about $195,000. The stealth blimp.

For three years, Ward, a civilian engineer for the Navy in Port Hueneme, has been working on a 69-foot prototype of a stealth blimpmeant to be unmanned, radio-controlled and invisible to radarthat has so far received about $700,000 in funding from the Army.

The armed forces aren’t exactly sure how or if they will use the stealth blimp. But the Army agency that is paying for Ward’s blimp project thinks that it could be an “advantageous tool” to add “to its bag of tricks,” says Charles Browne, an engineer with the Intelligence and Electronic Warfare Center in Virginia, which is evaluating the blimp. Browne says the stealth blimp would be great for finding guerrilla base camps or investigating ships suspected of smuggling drugs.

Expensive mega-projects with familiar and frightening doomsday missions, like the B-2, seem inevitable for the military. But the stealth blimp is an unlikely tale of a comparatively cheap aircraft intended mostly for reconnaissance missions.

The melon-shaped stealth blimp also inspires jokes. Says Ward: “When the idea is that you’re sneaking in, a blimp just sounds funny.”

Ward’s plan is for a blimp that would be controlled by radio, so no pilots would be at peril from enemy bullets. It would be controlled from as far as 100 miles away, and would send back pictures through a fiber-optic strand strung from the blimp to the control station attached to a series of beach-ball-sized balloons.

The current prototype, about a third the size of the Goodyear blimp, is being tested at a private blimp airfield in Elizabeth City, N.C., after earlier checks in Camarillo and at Vandenberg Air Force Base essentially proved that the craft could fly as planned. The tests will help determine whether a final version of the stealth blimp will be built for use by the military. It’s hard to say how much more funding the blimp will get, Browne concedes, because its current budget is so small that it doesn’t appear on most budget plans.

Bill Watson, a model maker who is working on the stealth blimp, long ago learned about the surveillance possibilities. A few years ago, he tested a bicycle-powered mini-blimp near Palm Springs. Watson says he flew around unnoticed by people below: “We’d fly 10 feet over their heads and ring the bicycle bell and they’d start looking around on the ground for us.”

That may not persuade military planners, but, Ward says, with a little explaining the logic of the stealth blimp becomes obvious. He points out that blimps are naturally quiet. And because they are mostly made of a fabric bag, they don’t tend to reflect radar waves much, anyway. The prototype that he has built includes radar-absorbing materials to make it more stealth-like. Plus a blimp can be made inexpensively for perhaps as little as $50,000, Ward says.
