Caddie collapses, rushed to hospital during AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

A caddie collapsed at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am on Friday.

The caddie, whose name is currently being withheld due to privacy concerns, was working for one of the amateurs, Lukas Nelson, in this week’s tournament. The amateur was paired with PGA Tour players Beau Hossler and Max McGreevy.

The collapse occurred on the 11th hole at Pebble Beach during the second round. Medical professionals performed CPR and emergency maneuvers on the caddie, with the caddie eventually placed on a stretcher and taken away by ambulance. A PGA Tour spokesperson confirmed the incident, with the tour releasing a statement that the caddie was rushed to Montage Health for evaluation.

According to ESPN’s Paolo Uggetti, the group was shaken up and appeared to be at odds with a rules official whether to continue play. The group was allowed to step aside to allow other groups play through. In a statement, the PGA Tour confirmed the foursome was allowed to halt their rounds in order to regroup.

“At the direction of the PGA Tour Rules Committee, the players in that group paused play during the medical emergency and will be allowed to warm up and resume their rounds shortly,” the statement said. “We will provide additional details when available.”

When the final group went through the 11th hole, Hossler and McGreevy returned to the course and resumed play around 2:50 p.m. PT.

Hoggs said his group was told the caddie's health had improved, which allowed them to continue. "The gentleman is most likely going to recover. So that obviously takes a weight off your shoulders," Higgs said.

368 Arrested, 131 Rescued In California Sex Trafficking Operation

 

Authorities arrested 368 people and rescued 131 victims involved in human trafficking in a weeklong statewide multi-agency task force, announced Feb. 1.

 

“We know that the sex trade is a prolific one that exists throughout this state and throughout our nation,” said Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Chief Michel Moore . “It’s an ugly scar against this great country that exists too oftentimes in plain sight.”

 

Operation Reclaim and Rebuild was conducted between Jan. 22 and Jan. 28 in nine counties, including Los Angeles, Orange, and San Bernardino, Moore said at a news conference at the department’s Elysian Park Academy.

 

Numerous federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies were involved in the effort, including the LAPD, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

 

The victims’ ages ranged from 13 to 52, including six children, and the average age was the mid-20s, Moore said.

 

Investigators worked with victim advocacy groups in providing services and resources “to help [victims] escape from this life-threatening environment,” he said.

 

Investigators responded to various advertisements offering sexual services and went to massage parlors suspected of being involved in trafficking. Among the arrestees were pimps and panderers, along with customers of such services, Moore said.

 

The victims are being exploited by “threat of death” or coercion, or threats against their family, while some are kidnapped and isolated from their former support to become dependent on the trafficker, according to Moore.

 

Moore noted that “in the old days,” the victims of human traffickers were often regarded by law enforcement as criminals, but a more modern attitude is to regard them as having been exploited by criminals—many of them having been kidnapped and held against their will.

 

Authorities stressed that the seven-day task force is only a part of law enforcement agencies’ everyday effort to combat sex trafficking.

Two politicians representing almost the entirety of Washington east of the Cascades in Congress want to stop a particular group of foreign nationals from owning, controlling, or profiting from American agricultural land.

 

U.S. Reps. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Spokane, and Dan Newhouse, R-Sunnyside, have introduced the “Prohibition of Agricultural Land for the People’s Republic of China Act” in the House of Representatives aimed at keeping members of the Chinese Communist Party from owning American agricultural real estate.

 

“Agriculture is Eastern Washington’s number one industry. We simply cannot allow companies from China to lock down our resources and undermine our farmers and ranchers’ ability to feed the world,” said Rep. McMorris Rogers in a statement. “Americans should not be forced to rely on China for the food they put on the table. Prohibiting the Chinese Communist Party from purchasing farmland in the United States is a no-brainer that will support domestic food production and decrease our dangerous dependence on foreign adversaries.”

 

The text of the bill calls on the president to “take such actions as may be necessary to prohibit participation in programs administered by the Secretary of Agriculture by nonresident aliens, foreign businesses, or any agent, trustee, or fiduciary associated with the Government of the People’s Republic of China.”

 

The wording is broad and aimed at preventing not just CCP members, but all affiliated persons and entities from meddling in the free market of American agriculture.

 

It also bans the same entities and individuals from participating in any United States Department of Agriculture program, with the notable exception of food safety inspections.

 

If adopted into law, the bill could have significant repercussions.

 

A recent report, from the FDA entitled “Foreign Holdings of U.S. Agricultural Land” notes that by the beginning of 2020, China already owns or indirectly controls nearly $2 billion in US agricultural land.

 

Another report from the USDA notes that in the previous decade Chinese investment in agriculture has risen by over 1000% outside its own borders.

 

Currently only six states – Hawaii, Iowa, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Dakota, and Oklahoma – have some form of legislation on the books banning foreign nationals from owning agricultural land. The bill would extend those protections to the rest of the nation.

 

“The Chinese Communist Party is a threat to American democracy,” co-sponsor Rep. Newhouse said. “The United States is engaged in a great power struggle with the CCP, and we must respond with tough policies that will protect our farmland and food supply chain.”

 

The bill is worded to prevent future purchases. It is unclear how, if enacted, this legislation would affect current holdings by CCP-affiliated entities.

North Carolina police department urges residents to not take potshots at suspected spy balloon

 

The Gastonia Police Department in North Carolina is asking residents not to call the police if they see the suspected spy balloon – and to refrain from taking potshots at it.

“If the now infamous Chinese ‘weather balloon’ makes its way over Gastonia, please don’t call the police to report it,” the department wrote on Facebook.

Police also reminded residents that they, __“don’t have the capability to respond to an altitude of 60k feet __to check it out,” and "we are pretty sure the Feds would want us to stay out of it.”

The department ended the post by urging residents to “please don’t take pot shots at it with your handguns in an attempt to bring it down on your own.”

Gastonia is a city of more than 80,000 people, about 20 miles west of Charlotte.

Some context: The US has been tracking the suspected Chinese spy balloon, which was first spotted in Montana and is believed to be moving eastward. CNN meteorologist Jennifer Gray said Friday evening that based on the wind direction, it could end up over the Carolinas or Virginia in the next 24 hours.

The California Department of Public Health said Friday it is not exploring emergency rules to add the COVID-19 vaccine to the list of required school vaccinations.

That's a reversal from Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom's 2021 announcement that the state would add the COVID-19 vaccine to its list of mandated vaccinations for kids to attend school. Last year, state officials delayed that requirement until at least the summer of 2023.

Now public health officials say they are no longer moving ahead with the effort as the state prepares to end its coronavirus emergency on Feb. 28.

Looked a little closer at this balloon image, fam. Those sections look like they're embedded on a clear film. This was a high-speed shot of the balloon, so no blur, but the irregular shape of each of the squares plus striation patterns suggests movement in a plastic material. That center ballast looks an awful lot like a housing for something mechanical, like a winch.

How Geologists Unraveled the Mystery of Japanese Vengeance Balloon Bombs in World War II

 

"During the Second World War the Japanese conceived the idea of fashioning incendiary bombs and attaching these to balloons which were released with easterly wintertime jet stream winds above 30,000 feet to float 5,000 miles across the north Pacific. The idea was to have these devices explode over the forested regions of the Pacific Northwest and initiate large forest fires that would hopefully divert U.S. manpower from warfighting in the Pacific theater to combating fires at home.

 

The balloons were crafted from mulberry paper, glued together with potato flour and filled with expansive hydrogen. They were 33 feet in diameter and could lift approximately 1,000 pounds, but the deadly portion of their cargo was a 33-lb anti-personnel fragmentation bomb, attached to a 64–foot long fuse that was intended to burn for 82 minutes before detonating. The Japanese programmed the balloons to release hydrogen if they ascended to over 38,000 feet and to drop pairs of sand filled ballast bags if the balloon dropped below 30,000 feet, using an onboard altimeter. Three-dozen sand-filled ballast bags were hung from a 4-spoke aluminum wheel that was suspended beneath the balloon, along with the bomb. Each ballast bag weighed between 3 and 7 pounds. The bags were programmed to be released in pairs on opposing sides of the wheel so the balloon would not be tipped to one side or another, releasing any of the precious hydrogen. In this way the balloons would rise in the daylight heat each day of the crossing and fall each evening, till their ballast bags were depleted, at which time the balloon and its deadly contents would descend upon whatever lay beneath it.

 

The first balloons were launched on November 3, 1944 and began landing in the United States on November 5th (off San Pedro, California) and by the following day (November 6th) were landing as far away as Thermopolis, Wyoming. 285 confirmed landings/sightings were made over a wide area, stretching from the Aleutian Islands, Canada and across the width and breadth of the continental United States: as far south as Nogales, Arizona (on the Mexican border) and easterly, to Farmington, Michigan (10 miles from Detroit). Most of the ballast bags were released in the trip across the north Pacific, but a few balloons crashed without exploding and some of the ballast bags were recovered. All of the bags contained the same type of dark colored sand.

 

The U.S. government muzzled the media about making any mention of the balloons in fear that whoever was producing them might be encouraged to send more. On March 5, 1945 a minister’s wife and five Sunday School students on a fishing trip were killed by one of the grounded balloons near Bly, Oregon while attempting to pull it through the forest, back to their camp. These were the only casualties of the balloon bombs during the war and the victim’s relatives were provided with a special death benefit after the war ended (in March 1946). The American public was made aware of the balloons after these tragic deaths, but word of their detonation never filtered back to the Japanese."
