It's all rote stuff that they train for on the tests. Another excellent piece maybe 7 years ago described how critical it is for every Chinese student and their family on test day to see who gets university. They train for that rote test for years, even going to special camps that cost major bucks. The author described the mothers of the testees actually crawling up a flight of stairs on their knees to worship before a STATUE OF MAO the day before the test, and place offerings to the statue. Mind boggling.
