Harvard University Professor and Two Chinese Nationals Charged in Three Separate China Related Cases

The Department of Justice announced today that the Chair of Harvard University’s Chemistry and Chemical Biology Department and two Chinese nationals have been charged in connection with aiding the People’s Republic of China.

Dr. Charles Lieber, 60, Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard University, was arrested this morning and charged by criminal complaint with one count of making a materially false, fictitious and fraudulent statement. Lieber will appear this afternoon before Magistrate Judge Marianne B. Bowler in federal court in Boston, Massachusetts.

Yanqing Ye, 29, a Chinese national, was charged in an indictment today with one count each of visa fraud, making false statements, acting as an agent of a foreign government and conspiracy. Ye is currently in China.

Zaosong Zheng, 30, a Chinese national, was arrested on Dec. 10, 2019, at Boston’s Logan International Airport and charged by criminal complaint with attempting to smuggle 21 vials of biological research to China. On Jan. 21, 2020, Zheng was indicted on one count of smuggling goods from the United States and one count of making false, fictitious or fraudulent statements. He has been detained since Dec. 30, 2019.

BOSTON – A Chinese national was sentenced today in federal court in Boston for making false statements in connection with his theft of 19 vials of biological research.

Zaosong Zheng, 31, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Denise J. Casper to time served (approximately 87 days), three years of supervised release and ordered removed from the United States. In December 2020, Zheng pleaded guilty to one count of making false, fictitious or fraudulent statements. Zheng was arrested on Dec. 10, 2019, at Boston’s Logan International Airport and charged by criminal complaint.

Disney CEO Bob Iger says he will step down in two years

Disney CEO Bob Iger’s second stint as boss of the House of Mouse will last just two years, the media titan said Thursday.

Iger, who shocked the business world when he returned to lead the entertainment and media empire last November, said the two-year window was stipulated in his contract.

“Well, my plan is to stay here for two years, that’s what my contract says, that was my agreement with the board, and that is my preference,” Iger told CNBC on Thursday.

Iger, 71, said one of his main tasks in his return to Disney will be to help the board “succeed at succession” — something that didn’t go well the last time he handed over the reins.

Iger handpicked Chapek as his successor before riding off into the sunset after 15 years of running the company in 2020. But the board removed Chapek, 62, after a tumultuous two-and-a-half-year reign, which included political fights with Florida’s Republican governor and state legislature over the “Don’t Say Gay” law.

Iger’s first few months have been challenging.He had to fend off a proxy fight from activist investor Nelson Peltzover the company’s $71 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox as well as the Mouse House’s failed succession plan.

But Iger’s plan to slash 7,000 jobs as part of an effort to achieve $5.5 billion in cost savings has placated Peltz. The boss of Trian Fund Management, which owns around 9.4 million Disney shares worth some $900 million, said he was ending the proxy battle.

“Now Disney plans to do everything we wanted them to do,” Peltz told CNBC on Thursday.

Nelson Peltz’s Trian Fund Management is ending its proxy war with Disney after the company confirmed plans for a major internal restructuring, the famed activist investor revealed on Thursday.

Peltz confirmed an end to his clash with the Mouse House’s board of directors after CEO Bob Iger announced a sweeping initiative to shave $5.5 billion in costs and slash 7,000 jobs on Wednesday.

“This was a great win for all the shareholders,” Peltz said on CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street.”

“Management at Disney now plans to do everything that we wanted them to do. We wish the very best to Bob [Iger], this management team and the board. We will be watching. We will be rooting and the proxy fight is over,” Peltz added.

Disney cheered Peltz’s change of heart.

A raging fire gutted a Bronx grocery store and injured two people as flames could be seen shooting from the roof of the now-destroyed business Thursday night.

The five-alarm blaze broke out around 5:30 p.m. inside C-Town Supermarket on University Avenue in Morris Heights, according to the FDNY.

One person and one firefighter suffered minor injuries, the department said. More than 100 firefighters battled the blaze that extended throughout the building into Thursday night, officials said.

A store employee told NBC 4 he saw smoking coming from the top of the building while the business was bustling with shoppers before everyone fled.

A witness who lives near the fire said the flames were near other businesses, including a gas station.

ronx resident Frances Malcolm told The Post her apartment building at 1715 Nelson Ave. had to be evacuated because of its proximity to the fire. She said officials could not tell her how quickly she and others could go back inside.

“My building, the people on the back, which is closer to C-Town where the fire started, they got smoke damage,” Malcolm, 69, said.

She said she was actually on her way to the supermarket but quickly turned around.

“I asked this gentleman, I said, ‘Sir, what’s going on,’” Malcolm said. “He said ‘I think C-Town’s on fire.”
