Yes, you read it right. Some ankle monitor devices have built-in microphones that can listen in and even record your conversations.

ANKLE MONITORS CAN HURT

Aside from the psychological trauma, ankle monitors can also hurt their wearer physically.

 

In an article published by The Marshall Project, a defendant who’d been wearing the ankle monitor for months shared his experience. He said that, aside from being a terrible inconvenience, it also tends to get very heavy causing his legs to go numb. Sometimes, it even makes him bleed. Plus, when he charges it, the device heats up burning his skin.

 

SOME ANKLE DEVICES CAN DETECT DRUGS AND ALCOHOL

So far, there aren’t yet any ankle devices that can detect drugs. Though there’s a device called SCRAM or Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitoring.

 

SCRAM devices use transdermal monitoring. Meaning, it detects traces of alcohol in your sweat. Some SCRAM devices can detect both your location and the level of alcohol in your body. But most of the time, it can only detect the latter.
