The Kyiv Independent recently interviewed soldiers on the frontline and issued a surprisingly blunt assessment (given it's obviously a news source on the Ukrainian side) that Ukrainian soldiers are by and large "unprepared, poorly-trained battalions being thrown into the front line meat grinder to survive as best they could with little support from armored vehicles, mortars, artillery, drones and tactical information."

Russia appears to be capitalizing on its momentum in the Donetsk region, by many accounts firing what's possibly the largest barrage of missiles so far this year. The Wall Street Journal reports Thursday:

Russian Jews call for ‘Holocaust’ reform

The word should be capitalized in Russian and used exclusively for WWII atrocities, a Jewish organization has argued

A Russian Jewish organization has urged national language officials to change the rules for how the word ‘Holocaust’ is used in the country’s press. It should exclusively refer to the extermination of Jews during World War II and spelled with a capital letter, it said.

The Russian Jewish Congress explained the suggestion in a statement on Thursday, reacting to the media coverage of the Holocaust commemoration week in January.

“The Holocaust is not a synonym for genocide. It’s a particular term for the mass slaughter of Jews by the Nazis during World War II,” the organization’s spokesman, Mikhail Savin, explained to the Russian media.

As any proper noun in Russian, it should be capitalized, the congress said, asking the relevant bodies in the Russian Academy of Sciences to offer their expert opinions on the matter.

Formalizing the proposed use will serve to respect the memory of the victims and prevent diluting the term, the organization argued. Treating the word any differently undermines the heroism of those who hid Jews during the Nazi occupation, fought to liberate prisoners from death camps, and otherwise helped make the death toll from the Holocaust somewhat lower, it added.

The congress said it expected discussions on the matter to take some time, and asked journalists to adopt its preferred version before the academy reached a conclusion.

The word ‘Holocaust’ originates from a Greek word for a burned sacrifice and was adopted when the Bible was translated into Greek to describe religious rites specific to Jews. It was popularized during the 20th century through the English language as a poetic term for various instances of mass murder and genocide.

Many Jewish communities prefer the Biblical Hebrew word Shoah (calamity) for the tragedy that befell the Jewish people.

President Biden Unveils $6.9 Trillion Budget 'Blueprint'

President Biden unveiled his wishlist of progressive pandering budget proposal for 2024 and it's a doozy.

The $6.9 trillion 'blueprint' outlined a slew of tax hikes on wealthy Americans as an avenue for reducing the deficit and funding key programs like Medicare.

Bloomberg reports that Biden’s proposal would increase funding on a bevy of government programs, extending the solvency of Medicare, lowering prescription drug prices, and cutting the deficit by $3 trillion over the next decade.

Even still, the deficit in 2024 would increase from $1.6 trillion to $1.8 trillion, and the gross federal debt would swell to $51 trillion after a decade.

In a year that GOP leaders have said they would pursue at least $150 billion in spending cuts and refuse tax increases, Biden instead proposes adding $77 billion across defense and non-defense spending while increasing taxes by $5.5 trillion over the next decade.

The White House’s wish list of policies includes:

restoring the full Child Tax Credit, which was first enacted in the American Rescue Plan;

a billionaire minimum tax, which would impose a tax of at least 25 percent on total income for Americans whose wealth exceeds $100 million;

making increases to the corporate tax rate;

making permanent some tax credits related to the Affordable Care Act,

and providing national paid leave.

US Congress health data hacked

Personal information from the DC Health Link marketplace was found for sale on the dark web

Sensitive personal information from hundreds of US Congress members and their staffers was stolen following a security breach at a health insurance marketplace used by government employees, the FBI told congressional leaders on Wednesday.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries also learned from the agency that the data is now being offered for sale on the dark web.

Leading lawmakers were informed of a “significant data breach” at the DC Health Link marketplace potentially affecting all members of the House and their families in a letter from the Chief Administrative Office of the House on Wednesday. CAO Catherine Szpindor promised a full list of the individuals affected but advised members to secure their finances “out of an abundance of caution” as their data may have been compromised.

While reassuring marketplace users that “it does not appear that Members or the House of Representatives were the specific target of the attack,” Szpindor nevertheless urged all DC Health Link members to freeze their credit, even offering a link to “step-by-step instructions” on how to do so.

Private data from 170,000 DC Health Link users allegedly stolen from the insurance clearinghouse on Monday, including names of spouses, dependent children, their social security numbers, home addresses, phone numbers and emails, and employment data, was found to be listed for sale on a dark web forum on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. The outlet communicated with an individual claiming to represent a seller known as “thekilob” and allegedly tested one of the phone numbers provided as a “sample,” finding it was valid.

DC Health Link oversees health insurance plans for both houses of Congress and their staffers. However, senators and their staffers had less of their data stolen in the breach, according to the AP, with their exposure limited to the names of family members.

The marketplace has “initiated a comprehensive investigation” in cooperation with “forensic investigators and law enforcement,” DC Health Link told the Washington Post in an emailed statement, reassuring customers it was “taking action to ensure the security and privacy of our users’ personal information.” The company added that it was personally notifying and offering credit monitoring services to affected members.

Several government agencies have been hacked in the last month. Hackers infiltrated the US Marshals Service system and stole sensitive personal data about the agency’s employees and its targets before activating ransomware shortly after the FBI itself experienced a security breach at its New York field office.

Nine Boxes Of Biden Documents Taken From Boston Office

Nine boxes of documents were taken from President Joe Biden's Washington DC think tank and shipped to the Boston office of his attorney Patrick Moore, and have yet to be reviewed for classified material, the National Archives disclosed in a Tuesday letter responding to Sens. Rob Johnson (R-WI) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA).

Moore shipped the boxes from the Penn Biden Center from his Boston office before discovering the initial trove of classified documents at the DC-based think tank, Fox News reports.

In response to questions by Johnson and Grassley in a Feb. 24 letter asking how and when the archives learned that records were transported to Boston, Acting Archivist of the United States Debra Steidel Wall responded the agency learned about it on Nov. 3, 2022.

"When NARA [National Archives and Records Administration] contacted President Biden’s personal counsel on November 3, 2022, to arrange to pick up boxes from the Penn Biden Center in Washington, D.C., they informed NARA that Mr. Moore had moved other boxes from the Penn Biden Center to Mr. Moore’s law firm in Boston," reads the letter.

What's more, the archives told the DOJ Office of the Inspector General on Nov. 4 that the documents had been moved. They were then picked up on Nov. 9, where they were secured at the JFK Presidential Library in Boston.

"NARA staff retrieved nine boxes from Mr. Moore’s Boston office," said Wall, who added that NARA doesn't know about any other locations where Biden may have stored records from his days as vice president. Under US law, presidential and vice presidential records must be handed to NARA for preservation when a president leaves office.

"NARA only has direct knowledge about boxes that were located at the Penn Biden Center and at Mr. Moore’s office in Boston," wrote Wall. "NARA has informed DOJ that, in accordance with the Presidential Records Act (PRA), any Presidential or Vice Presidential records that DOJ obtains from any other location must be returned to NARA no later than the conclusion of their investigation."

Meanwhile, the Archives - despite having possession of the boxes since November - "has not reviewed the contents of the boxes found at Mr. Moore’s Boston office," the letter reads.

Red Cross provides migrants with maps, guides for journey to US-Mexico border

Some migrants seeking to make the journey from Mexico or Central America to the United States have received maps, guides, and other resources from the American Red Cross, according to documents obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

The Red Cross is responsible for allocating funds to nongovernmental organizations that support illegal migrants in the United States who are awaiting an immigration court date. The nonprofit appears to have extended that support to migrants south of the border by providing resource packets with information about making the journey to the United States.

The nonprofit's packet, which includes the International Committee of the Red Cross and American Red Cross logos, features a map with the locations of hotels, clinics, and shelters in Mexico and Central America where migrants can seek support along their journey. It also shows train routes and roads leading to U.S. border cities in California, Arizona, and Texas.

Migrants are provided with a guide to "self care" and tips on how to survive the desert, safely jump on a cargo train, and receive contraceptives.

"If you use contraceptive methods, don't forget to bring them with you. In necessary cases, some Red Cross clinics and medical brigades will give them to you for free," the document states.

The Red Cross' packet warns of "extreme" desert temperatures and advises bringing "lots of potable water, pants and long sleeves to protect you from the sun."

"Also take with you warm clothes, gloves to protect your hands and a flashlight and matches," the document states.

It tells migrants that "traveling seated" on cargo trains is the "most recommended."

"Be careful on your trip, there are branches, electric cables, tunnels that can hit you. Accommodate yourself where you have supporting points," the guide adds.

When reached for comment by the DCNF, a Red Cross spokesperson did not deny creating or distributing the documents.

"Every day around the world, people make the difficult decision to leave their homes and their countries in pursuit of a safer place to live and hope for a better future," the spokesperson said. "Families migrate for different reasons, such as conflict, violence, natural disasters, or other reasons."

"The International Committee of the Red Cross, as a part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, does not prevent nor does it encourage migration," the spokesperson continued. "We aim to help prevent and mitigate the humanitarian consequences that migration can bring – including separation and loss of family contacts, disappearances, serious medical issues and even death."

The spokesperson added that the Red Cross' "approach to migrants is strictly humanitarian."

"We provide information about ways to reduce risk and where to find lifesaving assistance in Mexico and Central America," the spokesperson stated. "It is essential to prevent the loss of lives and to promote a humanitarian approach. Addressing the needs of this vulnerable population is a shared responsibility, of the authorities in the countries of origin, transit and destination, and of the international community."

‘Drop All Charges’: Blazing Chaos Breaks Out During Protest Outside Jail Housing Alleged Domestic Terrorists

People inside Georgia’s DeKalb County Jail broke windows and lit small objects on fire during a Wednesday evening protest decrying domestic terrorism charges levied against more than 20 people after a violent demonstration at a nearby police training center construction site, according to local media.

The 23 people charged with domestic terrorism following the destructive Sunday protest at the forest site of the planned training center, unofficially dubbed “Cop City,” were booked in DeKalb County Jail, according to 11Alive, and DeKalb County Magistrate Judge Anna Davis later denied 22 of them bond but granted $5,000 bond to accused Southern Poverty Law Center Attorney Thomas Webb Jurgens. Individuals inside the jail broke cell windows and tossed out lit objects as the Wednesday night protest outside the jail occurred, with a small fire subsequently burning on a rooftop ledge, according to WSB-TV.

Demonstrators outside projected statements including “STOP COP CITY,” “DROP ALL CHARGES” and “FOREST DEFENSE IS SELF DEFENSE” on the building, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.

The SPLC said Monday that Jurgens was acting as a legal observer on the National Lawyers Guild’s (NLG) behalf when he was arrested, arguing his arrest was evidence of “heavy-handed law enforcement intervention against protesters” and not of a crime.

Prior to the Sunday incident, 19 people had already been charged with domestic terrorism since December for alleged conduct in opposition to the police training center, according to the AJC.

Protestors raged violently in Atlanta the weekend after left-wing activist Manuel Teran was fatally shot by police on Jan. 18 in the area of the police training center site, the outlet reported. Teran had allegedly disobeyed law enforcement instructions and fired his weapon during a police clearing operation, according to Atlanta News First.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

House Votes Down Resolution to Withdraw Troops from Syria

The House on Tuesday voted down a War Powers Resolution introduced by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) that would order President Biden to withdraw all US troops from Syria within 180 days.

The resolution failed in a vote of 103-321, with 56 Democrats and 47 Republicans voting in favor of the bill. Click here for the roll call to see how each representative voted. In a statement after the vote, Gaetz vowed to continue his effort to end US involvement in Syria.

“There is no role for the United States of America in Syria. We are not a Middle Eastern power. We have tried to build a democracy out of sand, blood, and Arab militias. Time and again, the work we do does not reduce chaos. Oftentimes, it causes chaos – the very chaos that then subsequently leads to terrorism. While today’s vote may have failed, my fight to end forever wars and bring our troops home has only just begun,” he said.

The resolution was led by Gaetz and cosponsored by four other Republicans, including Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), Andy Biggs (R-AZ), Paul Gosar (R-AZ), and Matt Rosendale (R-MT). It also received support from some progressive Democrats, including Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Ro Khanna (D-CA).

The Congressional Progressive Caucus was circulating a message to its 100 members in the House to support the bill. But the vote shows that the majority of Congress still supports the US occupation of eastern Syria, where there are currently about 900 US troops deployed.

The US insists its presence in Syria is about fighting ISIS remnants, but it is also part of the economic campaign against Damascus. By backing the Kurdish-led SDF in eastern Syria, the US controls about one-third of the country, an area where most of Syria’s oil fields are located.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley made a rare visit to Syria over the weekend and said continuing the fight against ISIS was worth staying in the country. But the Syrian government, its allies, and other countries in the region are sworn enemies of ISIS. They would continue fighting the group once the US is gone, something Gaetz pointed out when debating the resolution on the House floor.

“Both Assad and Turkey are in stronger positions today to put downward pressure on ISIS, and maybe if we weren’t giving weapons to people shooting at Assad, Assad would have every incentive to be able to engage ISIS in a way to ensure that it doesn’t come back,” Gaetz said.
