The US prosecutor behind efforts to extradite US fugitive Nicholas Rossi has been revealed as the new owner of a controversial Scottish castle.

Mr Leavitt told BBC Scotland a decade-long fantasy to buy, restore and ultimately live in a Scottish castle led him and his wife to purchase Knockderry.

Speaking on his return to Utah after his latest visit to Scotland he said: "My wife and I have been looking at Scottish castles for at least a decade."

"It just so happened that the particular characteristics of Knockderry spoke to us in a way that prompted us to act. We like the fact that it's right next to the loch. We like the history and it met all of our criteria."

GM offers buyouts as part of cost reduction plan

 

Automaker says buyout plan ‘not layoffs’

General Motors will offer buyouts to most salaried employees and global executives, in a move that will cost up to $1.5 billion in estimated pre-tax charges to cover the costs, the largest U.S. automaker announced on Thursday. Under the terms of the staff reduction plan, all U.S. salaried employees with at least five years of service and all global executives with at least two years of service will be offered lump sum payments and other compensation to exit the company, GM said. "Employees are strongly encouraged to consider the program," the automaker added. "By permanently bringing down structured costs, we can improve vehicle profitability and remain nimble in an increasingly competitive market." Eligible employees interested in the voluntary program must sign up by March 24 and those agreeing will leave GM by June 30. The announcement comes as layoffs by U.S. companies in the past two months touch their highest since 2009, with the tech sector accounting for more than a third of the over 180,000 job cuts announced. n January, the U.S. automaker disclosed a $2 billion cost cut target, including reducing employment through attrition, although the buyouts are separate from job cuts the company made last month, with 30% to 50% of these savings expected during 2023 and the full amount expected in 2024.

 

A GM executive said in February the company was cutting hundreds of executive-level and salaried jobs, while peer Ford said it planned to eliminate 3,800 product development and administration jobs in Europe in the next three years.

President Joe Biden’s former executive assistant, Kathy Chung, has scheduled an interview with the House Oversight Committee next month, as part of the congressional investigation into classified documents found at Biden’s home and office, two sources familiar with the mater tell CNN.

 

The Republican-led committee sent a letter to Chung last month demanding an interview and information related to the classified documents and communications with the Biden family dating back more than 10 years.

 

Chung also has recently handed over files related to the movement of documents when then-Vice President Biden left office and how they ended up at the Penn Biden Center, his private think tank office, according to one of the sources familiar with the matter.

 

Chung was one of the staffers who packed Biden’s belongings and documents at the end of his time as vice president, the source said.

 

Those boxes eventually ended up at the Penn Biden Center and are now at the center of a special counsel investigation into the possible mishandling of classified material. The source, who is close to Chung, previously told CNN she feels partly responsible for the situation.

 

The committee made a broad request that asks for materials well beyond the Biden document investigation, including all communications with the Biden family dating back to 2009. The panel also demanded all documents and communications “related to then-Vice President Biden’s departure from office in 2017, including communications regarding Penn Biden Center,” the letter notes.

 

Chung’s lawyer, Bill Taylor, previously told CNN there are limits to what they are willing to provide: “She is not agreeing to produce everything in the letter but would provide documents related to the movement of documents from the White House to the Penn Biden Center.”

 

Her interview is scheduled for April 4.

 

Chung, who now works at the Pentagon, was interviewed earlier this year in the Justice Department probe of classified documents found in Biden’s home and office.

As we detailed Wednesday, Russian forces have at this point taken full control of the eastern part of the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut as one of the bloodiest battles of the year-long war appears close to ending.

 

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has since acknowledged that Bakhmut might fall to Russian forces in the "coming days" amid reports of rapid gains, which has been spearheaded by the Russian mercenary outfit Wagner Group. "We cannot rule out that Bakhmut may eventually fall in the coming days," Stoltenberg told a press briefing in Stockholm. But like with statements from Pentagon generals of late, he quickly tried to downplay the city's strategic importance.

 

Stoltenberg described that its capture by the Russian military won't "necessarily reflect any turning point of the war".

 

The Kyiv Independent recently interviewed soldiers on the frontline and issued a surprisingly blunt assessment (given it's obviously a news source on the Ukrainian side) that Ukrainian soldiers are by and large "unprepared, poorly-trained battalions being thrown into the front line meat grinder to survive as best they could with little support from armored vehicles, mortars, artillery, drones and tactical information."

 

Russia appears to be capitalizing on its momentum in the Donetsk region, by many accounts firing what's possibly the largest barrage of missiles so far this year. The Wall Street Journal reports Thursday:

 

Russia fired dozens of missiles at Kyiv and other regions across Ukraine overnight, striking civilian infrastructure and the country’s defense industry in one of the biggest barrages this year as its forces continued to claw more territory in the east.

 

Gen. Valeriy Zaluzhny, the commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s armed forces, said Russia had launched 81 missiles of different varieties from air, land and sea, in addition to eight Iranian-made attack drones. Four of the drones and 34 cruise missiles were intercepted, Gen. Zaluzhny said.

The Great Barrington Declaration

As infectious disease epidemiologists and public health scientists we have grave concerns about the damaging physical and mental health impacts of the prevailing COVID-19 policies, and recommend an approach we call Focused Protection.

 

Coming from both the left and right, and around the world, we have devoted our careers to protecting people. Current lockdown policies are producing devastating effects on short and long-term public health. The results (to name a few) include lower childhood vaccination rates, worsening cardiovascular disease outcomes, fewer cancer screenings and deteriorating mental health – leading to greater excess mortality in years to come, with the working class and younger members of society carrying the heaviest burden. Keeping students out of school is a grave injustice.

 

Keeping these measures in place until a vaccine is available will cause irreparable damage, with the underprivileged disproportionately harmed.

 

Fortunately, our understanding of the virus is growing. We know that vulnerability to death from COVID-19 is more than a thousand-fold higher in the old and infirm than the young. Indeed, for children, COVID-19 is less dangerous than many other harms, including influenza.

 

As immunity builds in the population, the risk of infection to all – including the vulnerable – falls. We know that all populations will eventually reach herd immunity – i.e. the point at which the rate of new infections is stable – and that this can be assisted by (but is not dependent upon) a vaccine. Our goal should therefore be to minimize mortality and social harm until we reach herd immunity.

 

The most compassionate approach that balances the risks and benefits of reaching herd immunity, is to allow those who are at minimal risk of death to live their lives normally to build up immunity to the virus through natural infection, while better protecting those who are at highest risk. We call this Focused Protection.

 

Adopting measures to protect the vulnerable should be the central aim of public health responses to COVID-19. By way of example, nursing homes should use staff with acquired immunity and perform frequent PCR testing of other staff and all visitors. Staff rotation should be minimized. Retired people living at home should have groceries and other essentials delivered to their home. When possible, they should meet family members outside rather than inside. A comprehensive and detailed list of measures, including approaches to multi-generational households, can be implemented, and is well within the scope and capability of public health professionals.

 

Those who are not vulnerable should immediately be allowed to resume life as normal. Simple hygiene measures, such as hand washing and staying home when sick should be practiced by everyone to reduce the herd immunity threshold. Schools and universities should be open for in-person teaching. Extracurricular activities, such as sports, should be resumed. Young low-risk adults should work normally, rather than from home. Restaurants and other businesses should open. Arts, music, sport and other cultural activities should resume. People who are more at risk may participate if they wish, while society as a whole enjoys the protection conferred upon the vulnerable by those who have built up herd immunity.

A Russian Jewish organization has urged national language officials to change the rules for how the word ‘Holocaust’ is used in the country’s press. It should exclusively refer to the extermination of Jews during World War II and spelled with a capital letter, it said.

 

The Russian Jewish Congress explained the suggestion in a statement on Thursday, reacting to the media coverage of the Holocaust commemoration week in January.

 

“The Holocaust is not a synonym for genocide. It’s a particular term for the mass slaughter of Jews by the Nazis during World War II,” the organization’s spokesman, Mikhail Savin, explained to the Russian media.

 

As any proper noun in Russian, it should be capitalized, the congress said, asking the relevant bodies in the Russian Academy of Sciences to offer their expert opinions on the matter.

 

Formalizing the proposed use will serve to respect the memory of the victims and prevent diluting the term, the organization argued. Treating the word any differently undermines the heroism of those who hid Jews during the Nazi occupation, fought to liberate prisoners from death camps, and otherwise helped make the death toll from the Holocaust somewhat lower, it added.

 

The congress said it expected discussions on the matter to take some time, and asked journalists to adopt its preferred version before the academy reached a conclusion.

 

The word ‘Holocaust’ originates from a Greek word for a burned sacrifice and was adopted when the Bible was translated into Greek to describe religious rites specific to Jews. It was popularized during the 20th century through the English language as a poetic term for various instances of mass murder and genocide.

 

Many Jewish communities prefer the Biblical Hebrew word Shoah (calamity) for the tragedy that befell the Jewish people.

President Biden Unveils $6.9 Trillion Budget 'Blueprint'

 

President Biden unveiled his wishlist of progressive pandering budget proposal for 2024 and it's a doozy.

 

The $6.9 trillion 'blueprint' outlined a slew of tax hikes on wealthy Americans as an avenue for reducing the deficit and funding key programs like Medicare.

 

Bloomberg reports that Biden’s proposal would increase funding on a bevy of government programs, extending the solvency of Medicare, lowering prescription drug prices, and cutting the deficit by $3 trillion over the next decade.

 

Even still, the deficit in 2024 would increase from $1.6 trillion to $1.8 trillion, and the gross federal debt would swell to $51 trillion after a decade.

 

In a year that GOP leaders have said they would pursue at least $150 billion in spending cuts and refuse tax increases, Biden instead proposes adding $77 billion across defense and non-defense spending while increasing taxes by $5.5 trillion over the next decade.

 

The White House’s wish list of policies includes:

 

restoring the full Child Tax Credit, which was first enacted in the American Rescue Plan;

 

a billionaire minimum tax, which would impose a tax of at least 25 percent on total income for Americans whose wealth exceeds $100 million;

 

making increases to the corporate tax rate;

 

making permanent some tax credits related to the Affordable Care Act,

 

and providing national paid leave.

US Congress health data hacked

 

Personal information from the DC Health Link marketplace was found for sale on the dark web

 

Sensitive personal information from hundreds of US Congress members and their staffers was stolen following a security breach at a health insurance marketplace used by government employees, the FBI told congressional leaders on Wednesday.

 

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries also learned from the agency that the data is now being offered for sale on the dark web.

 

Leading lawmakers were informed of a “significant data breach” at the DC Health Link marketplace potentially affecting all members of the House and their families in a letter from the Chief Administrative Office of the House on Wednesday. CAO Catherine Szpindor promised a full list of the individuals affected but advised members to secure their finances “out of an abundance of caution” as their data may have been compromised.

 

While reassuring marketplace users that “it does not appear that Members or the House of Representatives were the specific target of the attack,” Szpindor nevertheless urged all DC Health Link members to freeze their credit, even offering a link to “step-by-step instructions” on how to do so.

 

Private data from 170,000 DC Health Link users allegedly stolen from the insurance clearinghouse on Monday, including names of spouses, dependent children, their social security numbers, home addresses, phone numbers and emails, and employment data, was found to be listed for sale on a dark web forum on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. The outlet communicated with an individual claiming to represent a seller known as “thekilob” and allegedly tested one of the phone numbers provided as a “sample,” finding it was valid.

 

DC Health Link oversees health insurance plans for both houses of Congress and their staffers. However, senators and their staffers had less of their data stolen in the breach, according to the AP, with their exposure limited to the names of family members.

 

The marketplace has “initiated a comprehensive investigation” in cooperation with “forensic investigators and law enforcement,” DC Health Link told the Washington Post in an emailed statement, reassuring customers it was “taking action to ensure the security and privacy of our users’ personal information.” The company added that it was personally notifying and offering credit monitoring services to affected members.

 

Several government agencies have been hacked in the last month. Hackers infiltrated the US Marshals Service system and stole sensitive personal data about the agency’s employees and its targets before activating ransomware shortly after the FBI itself experienced a security breach at its New York field office.

Nine Boxes Of Biden Documents Taken From Boston Office

 

Nine boxes of documents were taken from President Joe Biden's Washington DC think tank and shipped to the Boston office of his attorney Patrick Moore, and have yet to be reviewed for classified material, the National Archives disclosed in a Tuesday letter responding to Sens. Rob Johnson (R-WI) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA).

 

Moore shipped the boxes from the Penn Biden Center from his Boston office before discovering the initial trove of classified documents at the DC-based think tank, Fox News reports.

 

In response to questions by Johnson and Grassley in a Feb. 24 letter asking how and when the archives learned that records were transported to Boston, Acting Archivist of the United States Debra Steidel Wall responded the agency learned about it on Nov. 3, 2022.

 

"When NARA [National Archives and Records Administration] contacted President Biden’s personal counsel on November 3, 2022, to arrange to pick up boxes from the Penn Biden Center in Washington, D.C., they informed NARA that Mr. Moore had moved other boxes from the Penn Biden Center to Mr. Moore’s law firm in Boston," reads the letter.

 

What's more, the archives told the DOJ Office of the Inspector General on Nov. 4 that the documents had been moved. They were then picked up on Nov. 9, where they were secured at the JFK Presidential Library in Boston.

 

"NARA staff retrieved nine boxes from Mr. Moore’s Boston office," said Wall, who added that NARA doesn't know about any other locations where Biden may have stored records from his days as vice president. Under US law, presidential and vice presidential records must be handed to NARA for preservation when a president leaves office.

 

"NARA only has direct knowledge about boxes that were located at the Penn Biden Center and at Mr. Moore’s office in Boston," wrote Wall. "NARA has informed DOJ that, in accordance with the Presidential Records Act (PRA), any Presidential or Vice Presidential records that DOJ obtains from any other location must be returned to NARA no later than the conclusion of their investigation."

 

Meanwhile, the Archives - despite having possession of the boxes since November - "has not reviewed the contents of the boxes found at Mr. Moore’s Boston office," the letter reads.

Silicon Valley Bank, At Center Of Venture Capital Bubble, Suffers Record 47% Crash Amid Sudden Liquidity Crisis

 

Is the bursting of the tech bubble finally spilling over to the financial system?

 

One day after the biggest crypto-focused bank, Silvergate Capital, announced plans to unwind and liquidate after a deposit run effectively killed its core business model, this morning its far larger peer - the parent company of the venerable Silicon Valley Bank, SVB Financial Group - saw its shares plunge the most in more than two decades after the company took "steps to bolster its financial position" that included not only a highly dilutive stock offering but also a panicked asset sale that sparked fears of a liquidity crisis at one of the biggest and original providers of funding to the Venture Capital industry.

 

The Santa Clara-based company’s shares sank by as much as 47% on Thursday, their biggest decline in the company's history since going public in 1987. The slump in the shares to their lowest level since May 2020, came after SVB i) announced a stock offering, ii) sold substantially all of the available-for-sale securities in its portfolio and iii) updated its forecast for the year to include a sharper decline in net interest income. “While we view these actions combined with a weaker guide as a clear negative, we do not believe that SIVB is in a liquidity crisis, especially following the significant proceeds” from its sale of securities, Wedbush analyst David Chiaverini wrote as he cut his price target for the company to $200 from $250. Others clearly disagreed and dumped the stock at a pace not seen in a quarter century. The bank also said it had sold about $21 billion of securities from its portfolio (with a plan to reinvest the proceeds but don't hold your breath) which will result in an after-tax loss of $1.8 billion for the first quarter. And the cherry on top was SVB's announcement of equity offerings for $1.25 billion of its common stock and $500 million of securities that represent convertible preferred shares. Additionally, General Atlantic committed to purchase $500 million of common stock, taking the total amount being raised to about $2.25 billion.

 

It wasn't immediately clear whether the SIVB liquidity crisis is a function of assets, i.e., loans collateralized by toxic early stage investments that have turned sour… or liabilities, i.e., a good old-fashioned deposit bank run. “The improved cash liquidity, profitability and financial flexibility resulting from the actions we announced today will bolster our financial position and our ability to support clients through sustained market pressures,” the company said in a letter to stakeholders but judging by the stock reaction, nobody believed it.

A data breach at DC Health Link may have exposed thousands of enrollees' personal information.

Information for hundreds of House members and staff was also stolen, according to a memo.

Personal information of hundreds of House members and staff was stolen due to a data breach at the District of Columbia's online health insurance marketplace, DC Health Link, according to a memo from a top House official.

 

The FBI notified Szpindor that the "account information and (Personal Identifiable Information) of hundreds of Member and House staff were stolen" during that breach.

 

The full scope of the incident remains unclear, but the attack does not appear to be specifically targeted toward House members, Szpindor wrote.

 

DC Health Link's spokesperson Adam Hudson confirmed the reports of exposed data to Insider.

 

"We have initiated a comprehensive investigation and are working with forensic investigators and law enforcement," Hudson said in an email. "Concurrently, we are taking action to ensure the security and privacy of our users' personal information. We are in the process of notifying impacted customers and will provide identity and credit monitoring services. In addition, and out of an abundance of caution, we will also provide credit monitoring services for all of our customers."

 

Congress members and staff are provided health insurance under the Affordable Care Act which passed in 2010. To enroll, lawmakers and their staff rely on DC Health Link to choose their specific plans.

 

About 100,000 people are enrolled through DC Health Link, according to its website, including "more than 5,000 District small businesses, approximately 11,000 designated Congressional staff and Members of Congress, and thousands of District residents."

 

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have formally requested more information from DC Health Link on what data was stolen, who was impacted, and measures are being taken, Szpindor said in the memo.

Speeding up the permitting process a top priority for the Biden administration, says John Podesta

U.S. President Joe Biden's top climate advisor says the United States needs to build electricity lines at double the current pace, blaming a sluggish permitting process for delaying vital arteries for the nation's clean energy transition.

"On average, interstate gas pipelines that require environmental impact statements are approved nearly twice as fast as transmission lines requiring the same," John Podesta told energy executives at the CERAWeek by S&P Global conference on Monday. "We don't have that time."

The US$369 billion Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) is the cornerstone of the Biden administration's climate policy. The legislation includes tax credits for electric vehicles, home solar panels, more efficient appliances, as well as measures to support grid-scale batteries and wind turbines. As senior advisor to the president for clean energy innovation and implementation, Podesta is tasked with deploying those funds.

"In just the battery industry alone, companies have announced over US$75 billion in investments for new and expanded domestic manufacturing since President Biden took office. US$28 billion of that has been in just the past six months," he said at the annual event in Houston, TX.

However, when it comes to building new electricity lines and other projects, he describes a permitting process "plagued by delays and bottlenecks."

"Plenty of delays happen at the state and local levels, and those need to be addressed. But there is plenty that we can do and must do federally," Podesta said, adding that he and U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm are tracking the pace of more than 20 key electricity transmission projects.

Podesta says the IRA includes funding to improve state and local permitting processes, but implementing the bill's 135 separate programs has been challenging.

"We can move faster by setting tight deadlines for agencies to complete environmental reviews. We can move smarter by making it easier to approve projects with low environmental impact," he said. "And we can move strategically by improving basic information sharing amongst agencies, and quality standards for project approvals. And by listening to local communities earlier in the process to keep the infrastructure project out of court."

Podesta says speeding up the permitting process within the bounds of "rigorous scientific standards" is a top priority for the Biden administration.

"I've worked in three White Houses. Permitting has never been a top priority for senior administration officials in the past. Now, thanks to President Biden, it is."

While he laments the IRA's slower-moving elements, international speakers at CERAWeek continue to see the legislation as a major driver of U.S. investment that puts pressure on other governments to roll out their own large-scale clean energy incentives.

"The U.S. IRA has given you a simple, very immediately addressable incentive scheme," Sanjiv Lamba, CEO of U.K.-based energy company Linde, said at CERAWeek on Monday.

In Canada, oil and gas companies, and other energy stakeholders, are looking to Ottawa to make its clean energy and emissions reduction incentives more competitive with U.S. offerings. Enbridge (ENB.TO)(ENB) CEO Greg Ebel says he would like to see that happen in the upcoming federal budget.

"They've really put a lot of carrots on the table in terms of promoting people to invest," Ebel said of the Biden administration in a recent interview.

"I think that's going to be very well received by the industry (in Canada)."

The Sixteen Thirty Fund is so sketchy, and so influenced by foreign nationals and foreign pocketbooks, that even The New York Times criticized it over its ties to the Wyss Foundation, a left-wing dark money group.

 

The Times has reported that The Wyss Foundation and its Swiss billionaire benefactor, Hansjörg Wyss, have “quietly created a sophisticated political operation to advance progressive policy initiatives and the Democrats who support them,” and described the associated Sixteen Thirty Fund as one of the “leading dark money spenders on the left.”

 

In all, the Sixteen Thirty Fund, which is directly related to CPAC’s Soros-backing, gave more than $63 million to anti-Republican, pro-Democrat super PACs in the 2020 election cycle.

Red Cross provides migrants with maps, guides for journey to US-Mexico border

 

Some migrants seeking to make the journey from Mexico or Central America to the United States have received maps, guides, and other resources from the American Red Cross, according to documents obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

 

The Red Cross is responsible for allocating funds to nongovernmental organizations that support illegal migrants in the United States who are awaiting an immigration court date. The nonprofit appears to have extended that support to migrants south of the border by providing resource packets with information about making the journey to the United States.

 

The nonprofit's packet, which includes the International Committee of the Red Cross and American Red Cross logos, features a map with the locations of hotels, clinics, and shelters in Mexico and Central America where migrants can seek support along their journey. It also shows train routes and roads leading to U.S. border cities in California, Arizona, and Texas.

 

Migrants are provided with a guide to "self care" and tips on how to survive the desert, safely jump on a cargo train, and receive contraceptives.

 

"If you use contraceptive methods, don't forget to bring them with you. In necessary cases, some Red Cross clinics and medical brigades will give them to you for free," the document states.

 

The Red Cross' packet warns of "extreme" desert temperatures and advises bringing "lots of potable water, pants and long sleeves to protect you from the sun."

 

"Also take with you warm clothes, gloves to protect your hands and a flashlight and matches," the document states.

 

It tells migrants that "traveling seated" on cargo trains is the "most recommended."

 

"Be careful on your trip, there are branches, electric cables, tunnels that can hit you. Accommodate yourself where you have supporting points," the guide adds.

 

When reached for comment by the DCNF, a Red Cross spokesperson did not deny creating or distributing the documents.

 

"Every day around the world, people make the difficult decision to leave their homes and their countries in pursuit of a safer place to live and hope for a better future," the spokesperson said. "Families migrate for different reasons, such as conflict, violence, natural disasters, or other reasons."

 

"The International Committee of the Red Cross, as a part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, does not prevent nor does it encourage migration," the spokesperson continued. "We aim to help prevent and mitigate the humanitarian consequences that migration can bring – including separation and loss of family contacts, disappearances, serious medical issues and even death."

 

The spokesperson added that the Red Cross' "approach to migrants is strictly humanitarian."

 

"We provide information about ways to reduce risk and where to find lifesaving assistance in Mexico and Central America," the spokesperson stated. "It is essential to prevent the loss of lives and to promote a humanitarian approach. Addressing the needs of this vulnerable population is a shared responsibility, of the authorities in the countries of origin, transit and destination, and of the international community."

People inside Georgia’s DeKalb County Jail broke windows and lit small objects on fire during a Wednesday evening protest decrying domestic terrorism charges levied against more than 20 people after a violent demonstration at a nearby police training center construction site, according to local media.

 

The 23 people charged with domestic terrorism following the destructive Sunday protest at the forest site of the planned training center, unofficially dubbed “Cop City,” were booked in DeKalb County Jail, according to 11Alive, and DeKalb County Magistrate Judge Anna Davis later denied 22 of them bond but granted $5,000 bond to accused Southern Poverty Law Center Attorney Thomas Webb Jurgens. Individuals inside the jail broke cell windows and tossed out lit objects as the Wednesday night protest outside the jail occurred, with a small fire subsequently burning on a rooftop ledge, according to WSB-TV.

 

Demonstrators outside projected statements including “STOP COP CITY,” “DROP ALL CHARGES” and “FOREST DEFENSE IS SELF DEFENSE” on the building, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.

 

The SPLC said Monday that Jurgens was acting as a legal observer on the National Lawyers Guild’s (NLG) behalf when he was arrested, arguing his arrest was evidence of “heavy-handed law enforcement intervention against protesters” and not of a crime.

 

Prior to the Sunday incident, 19 people had already been charged with domestic terrorism since December for alleged conduct in opposition to the police training center, according to the AJC.

 

Protestors raged violently in Atlanta the weekend after left-wing activist Manuel Teran was fatally shot by police on Jan. 18 in the area of the police training center site, the outlet reported. Teran had allegedly disobeyed law enforcement instructions and fired his weapon during a police clearing operation, according to Atlanta News First.

 

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

House Votes Down Resolution to Withdraw Troops from Syria

The House on Tuesday voted down a War Powers Resolution introduced by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) that would order President Biden to withdraw all US troops from Syria within 180 days.

 

The resolution failed in a vote of 103-321, with 56 Democrats and 47 Republicans voting in favor of the bill. Click here for the roll call to see how each representative voted. In a statement after the vote, Gaetz vowed to continue his effort to end US involvement in Syria.

 

“There is no role for the United States of America in Syria. We are not a Middle Eastern power. We have tried to build a democracy out of sand, blood, and Arab militias. While today’s vote may have failed, my fight to end forever wars and bring our troops home has only just begun,” he said.

 

The resolution was led by Gaetz and cosponsored by four other Republicans, including Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), Andy Biggs (R-AZ), Paul Gosar (R-AZ), and Matt Rosendale (R-MT). It also received support from some progressive Democrats, including Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Ro Khanna (D-CA).

 

The Congressional Progressive Caucus was circulating a message to its 100 members in the House to support the bill. But the vote shows that the majority of Congress still supports the US occupation of eastern Syria, where there are currently about 900 US troops deployed.

But the Syrian government, its allies, and other countries in the region are sworn enemies of ISIS. They would continue fighting the group once the US is gone, something Gaetz pointed out when debating the resolution on the House floor.

 

“Both Assad and Turkey are in stronger positions today to put downward pressure on ISIS, and maybe if we weren’t giving weapons to people shooting at Assad, Assad would have every incentive to be able to engage ISIS in a way to ensure that it doesn’t come back,” Gaetz said.

The latest letter — dated Feb. 7, 2023, and addressed to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell — labels sanctions against Fridman and his partners Petr Aven, German Khan, and Alexei Kuzmichev “unreasonable” and asked the EU adopt a more “nuanced” approach to sanctioning private Russian businesses over the war in Ukraine. “Our understanding is that Alfa Group companies are not included in the circle of companies close to the Russian authorities, President Putin, or anyone else from the highest echelons of power in the Russian Federation,” the letter read.

 

“In Russian business circles, Alfa [Group] has always been regarded as the most pro-Western business structure. Following the imposition of sanctions, Mr. Fridman and his partners have completely withdrawn from managing assets based in Russia,” the letter added. The letter also emphasized Fridman’s close connection to the late Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov, his Ukrainian heritage, and long-running history of charitable and business investments into the Ukrainian economy, as well as financial support for Ukrainian war refugees. “For almost 30 years, Mr. Fridman and his partners … have been among the largest private investors in the Ukrainian economy,” the document said. Signatories to the letter, including independent journalist Leonid Parfyonov, TV Rain founder Natalya Sindeyeva and businessman Yevgeny Chichvarkin, said the European Commission’s decision to lift the sanctions on Alfa Group “would establish a constructive motivation for all Russian businessmen to follow a similar line of conduct.”

 

Fridman, who according to Forbes ranks among Russia’s 10 wealthiest billionaires, has been living in Britain since 2015 and now invests primarily in the U.S. and EU markets, according to the letter.

 

The Alfa Group Consortium is an international investment group that was co-founded by Fridman and Anatoly Potik in 1989 and currently owns stakes in Alfa Bank, Russia’s largest food retail operator X5 Retail Group and Turkey’s largest mobile operator Turkcell. Earlier this week, Navalny’s team identified Venediktov among the key beneficiaries of a corruption scheme spearheaded by Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin in a move that is believed to have caused considerable damage to the journalist’s reputation, though he has denied any wrongdoing.
