Then Raju ran over to McCarthy and asked him what he thought about Romney’s weak response. “Romney should be disappointed that Swalwell hasn’t resigned,” McCarthy said, not even pausing for a second to dignify the stupidity of the question.

He recently provided journalist Tucker Carlson access to Jan. 6 footage. When it was announced, CNN and other leftist groups got upset. But nothing compares to the angry reaction when Carlson showed some of the footage on his top-ranked Fox News program on Monday night. The program showed footage indicating that the Jan. 6 Committee had falsely conveyed the circumstances of Sen. Josh Hawley’s evacuation from the Capitol, had falsely added audio to clips, had not pursued evidence that mysterious protester Ray Epps had lied about his whereabouts, and had concealed evidence that Jan. 6 protesters who had entered the Capitol were not treated as threats.

The media and other partisans shrieked in horror that this footage was being shown to the American people. It burst through the media-enforced narratives about the day.

He said, “It was a mistake, in my view, for Fox News to depict this in a way that is completely at variance with what our chief law enforcement official here at the Capitol thinks.”

The man only rarely speaks on camera to reporters, so his decision to do so is intentional. He brought a prop

Even if he didn’t agree with every journalistic decision Carlson made, he could have said any number of things to serve the American people

— and Republican voters

— instead of serving Chuck Schumer and CNN.

He could have said he welcomed the transparency regarding the footage from Jan. 6, that Pelosi’s manipulation of that footage was sinfully wrong, and that it should not have taken two years to get this footage to the American people.

He could have said something in defense of the First Amendment-protected right of assembly and petitioned the government for a redress of grievances. He could have reminded Americans about how awful it is that left-wing rioters are routinely allowed to firebomb or otherwise desecrate Christian churches, pro-life pregnancy centers, the Mark O. Hatfield federal courthouse, police precincts, the Atlanta site of the cop-training facility, the Keystone pipeline, and downtown Seattle.

He could have talked about the importance of election integrity and security, noting that the 2020 election

— and the radical changes to the laws and processes governing it in the months leading up to it

— had been bad for the country. He could have mentioned how Big Media and Big Tech conspired to meddle in that election, and that messing with people’s elections is a major problem in this country and something about which Americans have every right to be upset.

He could have said Carlson’s journalism was a reminder that one can never trust narratives from corporate, left-wing media such as CNN, the outlet where Raju works. He could have listed the lies and deceptions put forth by that network, such as the recent news that they intentionally suppressed journalism about the Wuhan Institute of Virology because they thought it might help their political opponent Donald Trump. He could have mentioned their years-long Russia collusion hoax. He could have mentioned their lies about Kavanaugh, in which they falsely and repeatedly portrayed him as a serial gang rapist.

If he wanted to be something of a squish, but not a complete squish, he could have even said, “I think Tucker might have been a little too dismissive of the violence we experienced, but he did a remarkable service by airing so much important video that Democrats tried to hide.”

When Raju ran over to McCarthy to do his damage control over the Jan. 6 footage, McCarthy handled it with ease. Raju asked a loaded and inaccurate question and asked McCarthy whether he regretted giving the American people a chance to see the footage.

No more red carpet at Oscars: Champagne will be the color for this year's ceremony

HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES – For the first time in more than six decades, Hollywood's biggest night isn't rolling out the red carpet.

The celebrated carpet at the Oscars - the place where stars show off their most elegant and outrageous fashions - will be a "champagne" color this year.

It will will be the first time since 1961 that the carpet at the Oscars isn't red.

The producers haven't yet detailed the reason for the change but the Oscars creative team is speaking at a press conference later Wednesday.

Host Jimmy Kimmel was present for the unveiling, and of course had some funny things to say on the change.

"I think we can go with a champagne carpet instead of a red carpet because of how confident we are that no blood will be shed," said Kimmel.

Fans of the awards show took notice of the carpet change as well.

"It seems a pity because the red carpet is so famous, isn't it?" said Ian Logan, a tourist from England. "Just doesn't seem quite right to change it."

There will still be red on display outside the Oscars - but it will be part of the drapes and other scenery.

Personal information of hundreds of lawmakers and staffers was stolen after a major security breach of DC Health Link.

“I have been informed by the United States Capitol Police and DC Health Link of a data breach impacting Members and staff,” CAO Catherine Szpindor wrote.

“DC Health Link suffered a significant data breach yesterday potentially exposing the Personal Identifiable Information of thousands of enrollees,” she wrote.

The size and scope of the breach is not known.

The FBI is investigating the breach.

Szpindor continued, “While we do not yet know whether other enrollees have been compromised, out of abundance of caution you may wish to freeze your family’s credit at the three major credit bureaus.”

HEZBOLLAH UNCOVERED ISRAELI SPYING DEVICE IN SOUTH LEBANON

On March 6, Hezbollah announced that it had uncovered an Israeli spying device near the separation line in south Lebanon.

In a brief statement, Hezbollah said that the device, which was disguised as a rock, was planted by Israeli soldiers near the al-Abad site in the outskirts of the town of Houla. The group didn’t provide any further information on the device.

Several similar spying devices were uncovered in south Lebanon, the heartland of Hezbollah, in the past. Some of the devices included motion sensors, while others had electro-opticalinfrared imagers or even signalelectronic intelligence systems.

Such spying devices are usually planted by the reconnaissance units of the Israeli Defense Forces or intelligence operatives.

Hezbollah uncovered the spying device just a day after a rare clash between Lebanese and Israeli soldiers along the separation line, which is also known as the Blue Line. Lebanon said that its troops pushed back an Israeli patrol that violated the line at the village of Aita al-Shaab in south Lebanon by a meter.

Israel keeps a close eye on south Lebanon through all possible means, mainly to monitor the Hezbollah’s ever growing capabilities.

Tensions along the separation line remain high. Nevertheless, a military escalation is highly-unlikely as both Israel and Hezbollah understand that any confrontation could quickly develop into a full-blown war.

NT Supreme Court dismisses appeal by 'sovereign tribal man' who claimed he was not subject to the law

The Northern Territory Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal by a man opposed to vaccination mandates who claimed he could not be prosecuted for alleged criminal offences because the law does not apply to a "sovereign tribal man" like himself.

Key points:

David Alan Cole was charged with multiple offences, including contravention of COVID directions

He argued that as "sovereign tribal man", he was not subject to Australian and NT law

A Supreme Court judge has dismissed his appeal against an earlier ruling rejecting his claim

David Alan Cole is facing multiple charges dating back over the past two years, including contravening a Chief Health Officer's direction, assaulting a police officer, taking part in a riot, entering Aboriginal land without a permit and breaching bail conditions.

When the proceedings went before the Darwin Local Court last year, Mr Cole, who is Indigenous, argued he was being prosecuted under a legal system that was not valid.

"[His] contention was that the Australian Constitution [and] the laws of the Commonwealth and the laws of the Northern Territory have no application to him as a 'sovereign tribal man'," Chief Justice Michael Grant said a decision handed down last week.

"The appellant asserts that, as a consequence, the Local Court has no jurisdiction or power to hear and determine the charges which have been brought against him."

Following a two-day hearing in the Local Court late last year, Judge David Woodroffe made a ruling in relation to the "preliminary issue" raised by Mr Cole.

"Judge Woodroffe determined that he was bound by authorities from the High Court to [the Supreme] Court to the effect that Indigenous Australians are subject to the laws of the Commonwealth, and the laws of the States and Territories in which they reside," the Chief Justice Grant stated.

Mr Cole subsequently appealed to the Supreme Court, claiming Judge Woodroofe's decision was contrary to other High Court decisions and was inconsistent with the United Nation's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

However, based on "preliminary observation" of the cited High Court decisions, Chief Justice Grant said there appeared to be "insurmountable barriers" to Mr Cole's contentions.

He said there was nothing in the High Court's previous decisions "which would support the notion that Australian legislatures lack competence to regulate the rights of Aboriginal people".

He also said there was nothing to validate the notion that "the laws enacted by those legislatures are subject to the acceptance, adoption, request or consent of an Aboriginal person to which they would otherwise have application."

Despite the Chief Justice's observations, he said it was not necessary for him to a make a ruling on Mr Cole's arguments.

Sydney Trains rules out cyber attack after total network shutdown

Sydney Trains has ruled out a cyber attack on the network after the system ground to a halt on Wednesday, leaving commuters stranded at peak-hour.

A fire has broken out on a semi-submersible rig that is being dismantled in Mobile, Alabama.

Multiple fire units arrived on scene to discover a “multi-story, oil rig-like structure” with heavy smoke and flames, the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department reported.

The platform is said to contain diesel, hydraulic fluid, and oil with other potential hazards on board.

Local news reports indicate the platform is being scrapped and the fire was sparked during hot work.

Smotrich apologizes to IDF for saying Israel should ‘wipe out’ Huwara

Israel's Air Force began a protest against actions by Israel’s newest coalition government two days ago by refusing to attend training.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich took to Facebook to issue a formal apology for his March 1st comments on the West Bank Palestinian town of Huwara – in which he said Israel should ‘wipe out’ the town.

Smotrich, who drew considerable ire for his comments, explained in his apology that a friend of his in the Israeli Air Force shared his anxiety about Smotrich’s violent rhetoric – an anxiety he said is shared by many in the Israeli Air Force who fear having to carry out such a task.

Two days ago, the Air Force protested actions by Israel’s newest coalition government by refusing to attend training.

“According to this friend of mine, and I trust him one hundred percent, it's not some cynical campaign excuse of the pilots in the context of opposition to reform, but a deep and real fear that led them to do what they did,” Smotrich outlined in his apology statement.

“The IDF is the people's army and has a clear moral and value framework… This framework is important because it captures around it all the soldiers, commanders and fighters coming from different parts of the nation. These are the values necessary to establish a basic contract between the state and those who are willing to give their lives for it and activate the deadliest weapons for it,” concluded Smotrich.

Smotrich’s comments on Huwara

“I think that Huwara needs to be wiped out, but the State of Israel needs to do it, most certainly not private citizens,” he said during a March 1st interview at a conference by business news organization TheMarker.

US State Department spokesman Ned Price called his words “irresponsible,” “repugnant,” and “disgusting,” while French officials said they were “appalled” by the comment.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry called the comment a “racist” and “extremist statement" which reflected the level of violence enacted by Israel against the Palestinians, while the Jordanian Foreign Ministry said it was a breach of human rights and international law.

Smotrich, who officially retracted that statement on March 5th, faced backlash from Israeli and global politicians for his inflammatory comments, which followed a riot led by Jewish settlers in which dozens of homes and cars were burned.

PM Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed Smotrich’s initial retraction, saying he wanted to “thank minister Bezalel [Smotrich] for making clear that his choice of words regarding the vigilante attacks on [Huwara] following the murder of the Yaniv brothers were inappropriate and that he is strongly opposed to intentionally harming innocent civilians.”

Sky News Australia can reveal Reserve Bank Governor Dr Philip Lowe enjoyed an extraordinary mortgage perk on top of his generous salary – which is now more than $1 million a year.

Dr Lowe was given a half-price loan by the RBA to buy his five-bedroom home in Sydney’s east.

For some years, his interest rate was locked at half the standard variable rate being paid by Commonwealth Bank customers across Australia.

Eleven staff are still enjoying the generous perk.

The revelation comes as 880,000 Australians brace for their fixed rate mortgages to end this year and a tenth-straight interest rate increase, announced on Tuesday, with the official cash rate now at 3.6 per cent.

Land title documents, obtained by Sky News Australia, reveal Dr Lowe took out two loans to purchase the property for $1,075,000 in 1997.

Up to $241,000 was loaned by the Reserve Bank to Dr Lowe at the heavily discounted rate and another $151,000 was borrowed directly from the Commonwealth Bank.

The documents suggest that neither of the loans have been discharged but a spokeswoman for the RBA insists they were paid off “several years ago” and Dr Lowe no longer has a mortgage.

NextEra CEO Says Offshore Wind a Bad Bet

Reuters March 8, 2023 By David French

HOUSTON, March 8 (Reuters) – Offshore wind is a bad bet due to the complications of installing and maintaining infrastructure at sea and the high cost of transmitting electricity back to shore, NextEra Chief Executive John Ketchum said on Wednesday.

“It’s very capital intensive,” he said during an event at the CERAWeek energy conference in Houston.

U.S.-based NextEra is the world’s largest producer of renewable power, with a focus on solar and onshore wind.

The administration of President Joe Biden is hoping to grow U.S. offshore wind power as part of its multipronged effort to decarbonize the economy to fight climate change. It has auctioned leases in federal waters. But most of the interest in those leases has so far come from European companies with years of experience in the offshore wind sector, which took off in Europe decades ago.

Ketchum said some of the industry’s complications included salt water corrosion, the threat of hurricanes, the availability of ships and the installation of subsea transmission cables, and added that supply chain issues have driven up the costs.

“We find it hard enough just to take care of a fleet onshore with some of the issues that we deal with as a company, and we’re best in class,” he said.

Ketchum said NextEra expects its power generation capacity – excluding its regulated utility Florida Power and Light – to grow dramatically in the next few years, from around 25 gigawatts now to around 70 gigawatts in 2026.

“And that installed capacity is going to come from renewables only,” he said.

He said the company’s plans assume huge advancements in battery storage technology needed to provide power to the grid when the sun is not shining and wind is not blowing. Batteries for power storage currently only last around four hours.

“You’re going to see significant innovations that come to market for the next, I’d say, five to seven years that are going to dramatically change how we think about batteries,” he said.

He said the electric vehicle industry was driving much of the innovation in batteries.

Ketchum said the Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act, which provides some $370 billion in incentives for clean energy, was a significant boost to the industry and that NextEra was well-placed to take advantage of it because of the company’s scale.

Despite having the largest renewable power fleet, Ketchum believed natural gas would play an important role in generation until storage technology improves.

“I mean it’s just putting your head in the sand to believe that the energy transition that this country is embarking on will work without natural gas power generation.”

FBI whistleblowers send shockwaves with warning that threat tags used to target conservatives

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan decried the FBI's emerging "pattern" of targeting "parents, traditional Catholics, pro-lifers" with threat tags.

What do school parents, Catholic attendees of Latin Mass and pro-life activists have in common? They've all been branded by the FBI as potential domestic terrorist threats in what whistleblowers say is a growing trend of using intelligence threat tags to enforce cancel culture.

The latest revelation came this past weekend when House Republicans released testimony from an FBI whistleblower who alleged colleagues in the bureau flipped a terrorist threat tag originally created to flag threats against pro-life Supreme Court justices into a signifier that anti-abortion protesters were somehow a threat.

The revelation came months after confirmation that similar threat tags were reserved for parents raising concerns about curriculum at school board meetings and the disclosure of an FBI memo suggesting Catholics who prefer the legacy Latin Mass posed a risk of extremist violence.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), the chairman of the powerful House Judiciary Committee told Just the News on Tuesday the pattern is a disturbing new trend in the political weaponization of federal law enforcement that can be traced all the way back to the launch of the Russia collusion probe targeting Donald Trump in 2016 based on uncorroborated allegations from his Democrat rival Hillary Clinton's campaign.

"If it's [targeting] parents, that's one thing," Jordan said on the John Solomon Reports podcast. "Traditional Catholics — okay, well, that's a concern too. But when it gets to be three, which is what we learned from a whistleblower when he said they were targeting pro-lifers, now we see a pattern, right? So it's parents, traditional Catholics, pro-lifers — all are wrong. Now it's a pattern."

In testimony released this weekend, FBI whistleblower Garret O'Boyle told congressional investigators the bureau issued guidance following the Dobbs abortion decision that overturned Roe v. Wade so agents could "look into … pregnancy centers" using the tag "THREATTOSCOTUS2022."

O'Boyle found this strange, he testified, beacuse it was pro-choice activists who were "protesting or otherwise threatening violence in front of Supreme Court Justices' houses."

He was asked to talk to a pro-life informant "about the threats to the Supreme Court," he testified. "I was like, why would this person know about those threats? He's pro-life. Like, he's not the one going and threatening the Supreme Court Justices."

O'Boyle never received guidance from the FBI to look into attacks on pro-life facilities, churches, or pregnancy resource centers, he told congressional investigators, illustrating how the threat tag was turned on its head to target pro-lifers instead of radicalized pro-choice supporters as was originally intended.

Sauma vigorously fight Uranium One’s mining method

THE Stampriet Aquifer Uranium Mining Association (Sauma) has criticised Omaheke region governor Pijoo Nganate in an open letter for allegedly advocating that Russian company Uranium One should be allowed to continue its mining operations in the area.

The governor has, however, defended himself.

Sauma is opposed to the in-situ leaching uranium mining method that Uranium One intends to use, because of the envisaged threat of contamination to the Stampriet Artesian Basin which supplies the arid Omaheke and Hardap regions with top-quality drinking water.

Nganate reportedly told a career fair organised by the non-profit company Ritja recently: “If we allow this mining, Leonardville would be a different town, with a spillover to the entire region.”

He allegedly urged Namibians not to “fear the unknown”, and to allow uranium mining near the aquifer in the cattle farming area along the Nossob River.

Contacted for comment on Thursday, Nganate said stakeholders should discuss the “possible and impossible” of such projects, instead of “fearing the unknown”.

“I said at the fair such issues should not be politicised, but discussed frankly by all stakeholders so we do not leave problems for future generations,” he said.

“Those for and those against this uranium initiative have never sat down to unpack this issue so that an informed decision can be taken without jeopardising our children’s future,” he said.

The governor said if the initiative is found to be safe, it would have economic benefits for the region, which has many poor people who depend on the old-age pension grants.

He said if, on the other hand, the project is found to be dangerous, it could be abandoned, with proponents being told why they cannot continue with it.

Nganate said the problem is that the two sides have never met, but are participating in opposing campaigns.

According to media reports, Uranium One says its proposed mining activities could result in the company injecting between US$300 million and US$500 million into the country’s economy over 25 years.

In the letter issued yesterday, Sauma told Nganate: “It is what science tells us and what we know about the underground geology of the Stampriet Artesian Basin, about the underground water, and about in-situ leach mining of uranium that is of critical concern.”

The association, mainly made up of commercial farmers, said underground maps of the geology of the basin, compiled from the samples obtained from thousands of boreholes drilled into the basin, show exactly which underground layers contain water.

According to Sauma, hundreds of water sample analyses show which layers have good-quality drinking water and which have salty water.

“This water comes from the aquifer layer that geologists call the Auob Formation, and the uranium deposits Uranium One has discovered are in this formation, used for supplying towns, irrigation and other farm activities,” said Sauma.

Minister of agriculture, water and land reform Calle Schlettwein has also opposed the in-situ leaching method of uranium mining.

This method involves drilling holes into the ground and then pumping sulphuric acid into the aquifer to dissolve uranium and other metals, before the liquid is pumped out to extract the uranium.

Newly discovered enzyme that turns air into electricity, providing a new clean source of energy

Australian scientists have discovered an enzyme that converts air into energy. The finding, published today in the journal Nature, reveals that this enzyme uses the low amounts of the hydrogen in the atmosphere to create an electrical current. This finding opens the way to create devices that literally make energy from thin air.

The research team, led by Dr. Rhys Grinter, Ph.D. student Ashleigh Kropp, and Professor Chris Greening from the Monash University Biomedicine Discovery Institute in Melbourne, Australia, produced and analyzed a hydrogen-consuming enzyme from a common soil bacterium.

Recent work by the team has shown that many bacteria use hydrogen from the atmosphere as an energy source in nutrient-poor environments. "We've known for some time that bacteria can use the trace hydrogen in the air as a source of energy to help them grow and survive, including in Antarctic soils, volcanic craters, and the deep ocean" Professor Greening said. "But we didn't know how they did this, until now."

In this Nature paper, the researchers extracted the enzyme responsible for using atmospheric hydrogen from a bacterium called Mycobacterium smegmatis. They showed that this enzyme, called Huc, turns hydrogen gas into an electrical current. Dr. Grinter notes, "Huc is extraordinarily efficient. Unlike all other known enzymes and chemical catalysts, it even consumes hydrogen below atmospheric levels—as little as 0.00005% of the air we breathe."

The researchers used several cutting-edge methods to reveal the molecular blueprint of atmospheric hydrogen oxidation. They used advanced microscopy (cryo-EM) to determine its atomic structure and electrical pathways, pushing boundaries to produce the most resolved enzyme structure reported by this method to date. They also used a technique called electrochemistry to demonstrate the purified enzyme creates electricity at minute hydrogen concentrations.

Laboratory work performed by Kropp shows that it is possible to store purified Huc for long periods. "It is astonishingly stable. It is possible to freeze the enzyme or heat it to 80 degrees celsius, and it retains its power to generate energy," Kropp said. "This reflects that this enzyme helps bacteria to survive in the most extreme environments. "

Huc is a "natural battery" that produces a sustained electrical current from air or added hydrogen. While this research is at an early stage, the discovery of Huc has considerable potential to develop small air-powered devices, for example as an alternative to solar-powered devices.
