#OTD in 1959, USS Skate (SSN 578) became the first submarine to surface at the North Pole. The previous year, Skate managed to circumnavigate the globe in only 50 minutes by taking a short cut - the sub circled within two miles of the Pole to pass through all lines of longitude.
