The first amendment bundles the notions of press, assembly, speech into the same amendment and idea. This has been interpreted, quite properly, by the supreme court as being a freedom of expression. The point is that being unable to communicate ideas prevents any civilized organization of the public.

Yes, what an intellectual. I'd never considered simply shooting people I disagree with.

The point of the 1st amendment is to give society means to rebuff tyranny without having to resort to a chimp out. The point of civics and governance as institutions is to elevate ourselves above such collapses of order and destruction of property. It doesn't always work, but if you think you're going to win the collapse of society, you're quite foolish. The world is a big place and has a lot of people who, once liberated from the auspices of civility, will have no problems playing by your rules, better, and toward a coherent vision they can rally support for.
