Sam Bankman-Fried paid himself and his team over $3 Billion and yet he still runs free.

 

Today in the Southern District of New York in the bankruptcy of FTX it was learned that SBF and his friends transferred over $3 billion to themselves before the company filed for bankruptcy.

 

Market Insider reported:

 

FTX cofounder Sam Bankman-Fried and five people in his inner circle took more than $3.2 billion from hedge fund Alameda Research and other parts of his crypto empire, according to its new bosses.

 

Former CEO Bankman-Fried and the FTX employees transferred the money to their personal accounts under the label “payments and loans”, FTX’s new management said in Wednesday filings to bankruptcy court.

 

Most of the funds came from Alameda, FTX’s sister trading arm, and were transferred before the crypto exchange collapsed in November, they said.

 

Bankman-Fried picked up about $2.2 billion, while ex-engineer Nishad Singh, FTX cofounder Gary Wang and ex-Alameda CEO Caroline Ellison received $587 million, $246 million and $6 million, respectively, the filings said.

Ryan Salame, the former Co-CEO of FTX Digital Markets, and Sam Trabucco, former co-head of Alameda, accounted for $87 million and $25 million, respectively.

 

The fresh revelations don't include the more than $240 million blown on luxury property in the Bahamas, political and charitable donations made directly by the FTX debtors, and substantial transfers to non-debtor subsidiaries in the Bahamas and other jurisdictions.

 

Bankman-Fried is facing eight criminal changes, including money laundering and wire fraud, linked to the downfall of his once-$30 billion crypto empire. The charges carry penalties that could amount to life in prison for the 31-year-old, who is under house arrest at his parents' home in California.

 

US prosecutors allege Bankman-Fried channeled money to Alameda, a crypto hedge fund he also controlled. They also allege that modified software code was used to would let Alameda carry a negative balance and still borrow unlimited funds from the FTX exchange.

Political opposition to bank bailout growing in Switzerland

The government is assessing a range of options to rescue Credit Suisse

 

Switzerland’s conservative Swiss People’s Party disagrees with the government plan to rescue the country’s second largest bank, Credit Suisse, a representative of the party, which is the country’s largest, said on Thursday.

 

“The government shouldn’t give Credit Suisse a state guarantee,” a member of the party’s leadership team, Thomas Matter, said, adding that “the Swiss National Bank was responsible for providing liquidity to Credit Suisse, and the SNB has acted.”

 

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Switzerland’s second-largest party, the Social Democrats, said his party is less opposed to the state aid but seeks “complete transparency.”

 

The response comes after Credit Suisse received a credit line of nearly $54 billion from the Swiss National Bank to bolster its liquidity and reassure investors that the investment bank can stay afloat.

 

The Swiss authorities are running through a wide range of scenarios to rescue the country’s second-biggest bank. One of the most discussed options is for Credit Suisse to be acquired by its larger rival, UBS, as the ailing lender cannot operate as a standalone bank, some analysts say.

 

Meanwhile, both lenders are reportedly opposed to a forced tie-up and see a takeover as a measure of last resort, Bloomberg reported on Thursday, citing sources familiar with the discussions.

 

UBS seeks to focus on its “wealth-centric standalone” strategy and is unwilling to take on risks related to Credit Suisse, the outlet said, while Credit Suisse, for its part, wants to buy time to get a handle on its problems after it received a liquidity backstop. In a memo to employees on Thursday, Credit Suisse CEO Ulrich Koerner said that the lender would prioritize its plans to strengthen the bank.

 

Another option, according to Bloomberg’s sources, is to break up the lender and sell off the parts.

 

Credit Suisse shares plummeted to an all-time low this week after its largest shareholder, Saudi National Bank, refused to provide further financial assistance following a report by the Swiss lender of its “material weakness.”

 

The Zurich-based bank has recently been battling to recover from a string of scandals and losses that have shaken the confidence of investors and clients. Customer outflows in the fourth quarter totaled over 110 billion Swiss francs ($120 billion).

NASA’s Magellan Data Reveals Volcanic Activity on Venus

In a first, scientists have seen direct evidence of active volcanism on Earth’s twin, setting the stage for the agency’s VERITAS mission to investigate.

 

Direct geological evidence of recent volcanic activity has been observed on the surface of Venus for the first time. Scientists made the discovery after poring over archival radar images of Venus taken more than 30 years ago, in the 1990s, by NASA’s Magellan mission. The images revealed a volcanic vent changing shape and increasing significantly in size in less than a year.

 

Scientists study active volcanoes to understand how a planet’s interior can shape its crust, drive its evolution, and affect its habitability. One of NASA’s new missions to Venus will do just that. Led by the agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, VERITAS – short for Venus Emissivity, Radio science, InSAR, Topography, And Spectroscopy – will launch within a decade. The orbiter will study Venus from surface to core to understand how a rocky planet about the same size as Earth took a very different path, developing into a world covered in volcanic plains and deformed terrain hidden beneath a thick, hot, toxic atmosphere.

 

“NASA’s selection of the VERITAS mission inspired me to look for recent volcanic activity in Magellan data,” said Robert Herrick, a research professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and member of the VERITAS science team, who led the search of the archival data. “I didn’t really expect to be successful, but after about 200 hours of manually comparing the images of different Magellan orbits, I saw two images of the same region taken eight months apart exhibiting telltale geological changes caused by an eruption.”

 

The search and its conclusions are described in a new study published in the journal Science. Herrick also presented the findings at the 54th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in the Woodlands, Texas, on March 15.

 

Modeling a Volcano

The geological changes Herrick found occurred in Atla Regio, a vast highland region near Venus’ equator that hosts two of the planet’s largest volcanoes, Ozza Mons and Maat Mons. The region has long been thought to be volcanically active, but there was no direct evidence of recent activity. While scrutinizing Magellan radar images, Herrick identified a volcanic vent associated with Maat Mons that changed significantly between February and October 1991.

 

In the February image, the vent appeared nearly circular, covering an area of less than 1 square mile (2.2 square kilometers). It had steep interior sides and showed signs of drained lava down its exterior slopes, factors that hinted at activity. In radar images captured eight months later, the same vent had doubled in size and become misshapen. It also appeared to be filled to the rim with a lava lake.

 

But because the two observations were from opposite viewing angles, they had different perspectives, which made them difficult to compare. The low resolution of the three-decade-old data only made the work more complicated.

Herrick teamed up with JPL’s Scott Hensley, the project scientist for VERITAS and a specialist in analyzing radar data like Magellan’s. The two researchers created computer models of the vent in various configurations to test different geological-event scenarios, such as landslides. From those models, they concluded that only an eruption could have caused the change.

 

“Only a couple of the simulations matched the imagery, and the most likely scenario is that volcanic activity occurred on Venus’ surface during Magellan’s mission,” said Hensley. “While this is just one data point for an entire planet, it confirms there is modern geological activity.”

 

The scientists liken the size of the lava flow generated by the Maat Mons activity to the 2018 Kilauea eruption on the Big Island of Hawaii.

 

Magellan’s Legacy

Herrick, Hensley, and the rest of the VERITAS team are eager to see how the mission’s suite of advanced science instruments and high-resolution data will complement Magellan’s remarkable trove of radar imagery, which transformed humanity’s knowledge of Venus.

 

“Venus is an enigmatic world, and Magellan teased so many possibilities,” said Jennifer Whitten, associate deputy principal investigator of VERITAS at Tulane University in New Orleans. “Now that we’re very sure the planet experienced a volcanic eruption only 30 years ago, this is a small preview for the incredible discoveries VERITAS will make.”

 

VERITAS will use state-of-the-art synthetic aperture radar to create 3D global maps and a near-infrared spectrometer to figure out what the surface is made of. The spacecraft will also measure the planet’s gravitational field to determine the structure of Venus’ interior. Together, the instruments will offer clues about the planet’s past and present geologic processes.

 

And whereas Magellan’s data was originally cumbersome to study – Herrick said that in the 1990s they relied on boxes of CDs of Venus data that were compiled by NASA and delivered in the mail – VERITAS’ data will be available online to the science community. That will enable researchers to apply cutting-edge techniques, such as machine learning, to analyze the planet and help reveal its innermost secrets.

 

Those studies will be complemented by EnVision, an ESA (European Space Agency) mission to Venus slated for launch in the early 2030s. The spacecraft will carry its own synthetic aperture radar (called VenSAR), which is being developed at JPL, as well as a spectrometer similar to the one VERITAS will carry. Both Hensley and Herrick are key members of the VenSAR science team.

“Voice of NASA” Hugh Harris Began Career in Cleveland

In 1962 Hugh Harris applied for a position in NASA’s Lewis Research Center’s Public Information Office hoping to hone his media skills for a year or so before returning to private industry. Instead, it was the start of 60-year association with the agency that included international recognition for his public broadcasts during space shuttle launches.

 

Harris became interested in public speaking as a youth while volunteering at a Cleveland area radio station and went on to write and produce radio shows during high school. This early experience led to a civil service position as a media specialist at the age of 18 while he was studying speech and dramatic arts at Western Reserve University. Harris was inducted into the army in 1952. During the Korean War, he was deployed to Germany where he utilized his talents as a military reporter and broadcaster.

 

Harris returned to Cleveland after the war and completed his undergraduate degree in 1956. He subsequently studied playwriting at Columbia University while working as a radio reporter in New Jersey. He moved on to newspaper reporting and returned to Cleveland in the early 1960s to write for the Standard Oil Company. After a wave of layoffs in 1962, Harris applied at NASA Lewis. In February 1963 Harris was hired as a public information specialist.

 

NASA was in the headlines at the time with its Project Mercury missions and the first flyby of Venus. Locally, Lewis had just been assigned responsibility for the Centaur and Agena upper-stage rockets and was dramatically expanding its workforce and facilities to support the nation’s space program. A key tenet of NASA’s mission is keeping the public informed of its activities.

 

Harris was responsible for writing materials for newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and motion pictures. In addition, he was sent on extended trips across the country to recruit people to fill the hundreds of new positions at the center. In 1964 he assisted with NASA’s elaborate exhibit at the World’s Fair in New York City.

 

Harris was often present for the Agena and Centaur launches. Kennedy Space Center (KSC) had a representative broadcast countdown updates and related information to the press during many of the launches. As the frequency of launches grew in the early 1960s, he found himself filling in on the Lewis-managed launches. Harris diligently prepared for each launch, meeting with the launch team and studying the mission objectives. He provided the countdown commentary for Surveyor missions and dozens of other launches.

In 1968, Harris was named chief of Lewis’ Public Information Office. In addition to his other activities, he was responsible for coordinating all of Lewis’ outreach activities, including tours, the center newsletter, and press releases. He wrote a series of 20 half-hour television shows highlighting NASA and other Cleveland area federal agencies, and helped plan events such as the center’s elaborate Technology in the Service of Man event in 1973.

 

In July 1969, Harris spent several weeks at the Johnson Space Center assisting staff with media communications during the slow periods of the Apollo 11 mission. As the schedule shifted, he unexpectedly found himself as Mission Control’s primary link to the outside world as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped onto the lunar surface. Harris helped analyze the garbled audio to ensure the first words on the Moon were correctly noted.

 

Despite the continued success of the Centaur Program, Lewis underwent major reductions and shifts in research areas in the 1970s. In 1975, Harris decided to accept a public affairs position at KSC. A former Centaur engineer recalled, “I thought it was a great opportunity for him, but a big loss for Lewis.”

 

Harris’ experience with the Centaur and Agena launches led to his providing launch commentary for the first shuttle launches in the early 1980s. As he had at Lewis, Harris prepared for each launch by studying the shuttle procedures and working on mock countdowns with the launch team. His communications from Shuttle Launch Control for the first 25 shuttle flights led to his being dubbed “The Voice of NASA.”

 

Harris, however, pushed back against this designation and assembled a small team which rotated launch assignments. Nonetheless, Harris provided commentary for 90 shuttle launches and played a critical role during the Challenger accident.

 

In 1985, Harris was named deputy director of Kennedy’s Public Affairs Office. He helped manage all of the center’s public affairs and educational activities involving the general public, schools, businesses, and the media. Harris also supervised the construction of Kennedy’s Apollo/Saturn V Center and initiated an honor roll for spaceflight journalists.

 

Harris retired in 1998 but remained active over the years as a public speaker and NASA volunteer. Harris passed away in February 2023 at age 90.

Bush administration as Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Environment and Natural Resources Division of the Justice Department.[16] At Kirkland & Ellis, Clark represented the United States Chamber of Commerce in lawsuits challenging the federal government's authority to regulate carbon emissions and the Environmental Protection Agency's "endangerment finding," while also a part of the team representing BP in lawsuits related to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.[17]

 

From 2012 to 2015, he was a member of the governing council of the American Bar Association's Administrative Law Section.[2] He is also a member of the Federalist Society.[18]

In June 2017, Clark was nominated by President Donald Trump to become the United States Assistant Attorney General for the Environment and Natural Resources Division.[19] He was confirmed by the Senate on October 11, 2018.[20] Within the division, Clark "developed a reputation for pushing aggressive conservative legal principles and taking a hands-on approach that drew kudos from some colleagues but often frustrated career lawyers on his team."[21]

 

Clark had opposed regulation of greenhouse gases.[22] In 2010, he had characterized US efforts to regulate greenhouse gases as "reminiscent of kind of a Leninistic program from the 1920s to seize control of the commanding heights of the economy."[23][24]

 

While Assistant Attorney General, Clark tried to delay the DOJ in seeking criminal and civil charges against North Dakota pipeline operator Summit Midstream Partners for its role in the largest-ever inland spill of waste water from oil drilling. Clark's attempts to delay the case led prosecutors under his supervision to go directly to Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen with the prosecutors arguing that Clark's rationale for delaying the case was inconsistent with "decades of case law". Ultimately, the DOJ proceeded with the case, which would become one of the largest water pollution cases in U.S. history. Summit Midstream Partners ultimately pleaded guilty and incurred $36.3 million in civil penalties.[25]

Chief Judge Beryl Howell of DC, an Obama appointee on Friday ordered Trump’s lawyer Evan Corcoran to testify before a grand jury in special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into classified documents stored at Mar-a-Lago.

 

Jack Smith’s lawyers last Thursday asked Judge Beryl Howell to reject Trump’s claims of attorney-client privilege.

 

The Special Counsel is seeking more testimony from Trump’s former lawyer Eric Corcoran because they don’t have a case.

 

On Friday, Judge Howell ruled DOJ prosecutors ‘met the threshold for the crime-fraud exception’ for Trump’s attorney.

 

A Trump spox blasted the Obama judge’s ruling as a “violation of due process.”

 

“Whenever prosecutors target the attorneys, that’s usually a good indication their underlying case is very weak. If they had a real case, they wouldn’t need to play corrupt games with the Constitution. Every American has the right to consult with counsel and have candid discussions – this promotes adherence to the law,” the spokesperson said, according to CNN.

In a monumental ruling Friday, a federal judge ordered Donald Trump attorney Evan Corcoran to provide additional testimony as part of an investigation into the former president’s handling of classified documents, a source familiar with the matter told CNN.

 

Corcoran has the potential to become one of the most crucial witnesses in special counsel Jack Smith’s criminal investigation into possible mishandling of classified records after the Trump presidency and obstruction of justice.

 

District Judge Beryl Howell said in an order under seal that Justice Department prosecutors have met the threshold for the crime-fraud exception for Corcoran, the source said.

 

The scope of what DOJ will be allowed to ask, however, was not immediately clear. Trump’s team is expected to appeal and ask for the judge’s order to be stayed while legal proceedings play out.

Police on Friday launched an investigation after graffiti denouncing Justice Minister Yariv Levin was spray-painted on an outer wall of his home in Modiin.

 

The graffiti called Levin “the enemy of the people.”

 

There was no immediate comment from Levin, who is observing the traditional Jewish mourning period after his father died earlier this week. It was not clear if he was home when the graffiti was spray-painted.

 

A police statement said officers were working to gather evidence.

 

Levin, a top Likud party confidante of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is a leading figure in the government’s push to overhaul the judicial system, which have been met with mass protests.

 

As part of the demonstrations, protesters have also held rallies outside the homes of ministers who back the shakeup plans, including Levin’s, where several were assaulted in January. On Friday, demonstrations were held outside the houses of Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Agriculture Minister Avi Dichter, both of Likud.

 

Condemning the graffiti, Netanyahu called for police and prosecutors to take immediate and forceful action.

 

President Isaac Herzog said in a condemnation statement that the graffiti was “a horrifying sight.”

 

Likud Minister Miki Zohar claimed the graffiti was the result of “an organized campaign of incitement aimed at spreading hate against us.”

 

“We are democratically implementing the will of the voter and bringing a long-awaited change. The incitement and lies that our democracy is in danger are spin that is meant to deter the public,” he wrote on Twitter.

 

“The reform will be completed,” Zohar vowed.

 

Education Minister Yoav Kisch, also of Likud, said “hatred like this is what may destroy our society,”

A number of opposition MKs also denounced the vandalism, including Yest Atid chief Yair Lapid, who said the graffiti did not keep with “the spirit of patriotic protest.”

 

“Even when the house is on fire, boundaries need to be placed,” tweeted National Unity leader Benny Gantz. “The demonstrations to safeguard democracy are critical. Malicious graffiti and incitement are illegitimate.”

Germany exposes Ukraine asylum trick

Kiev has offered Russian deserters sanctuary in Germany, apparently without asking Berlin

 

For months, the Ukrainian military and intelligence services have tried to entice Russian soldiers to desert and surrender, promising them asylum in European countries such as Germany and the Netherlands. This week, the German government said that no such program existed.

 

Ukraine is “playing a very cynical game with Russian soldiers who are considering deserting,” the German outlet NachDenkSeiten noted on Friday, pointing to the letter Bundestag member Andrej Hunko (Die Linke) sent to the Interior Ministry about the promises made by Kiev, and the response he received.

 

“Is it true that Russian deserters have the opportunity to apply for asylum in Germany through the Ukrainian state project ‘I Want to Live,’ and what other similar or comparable programs is the federal government aware of, through which Russian deserters in Ukrainian captivity can apply for asylum in EU member states, including Germany?” Hunko asked in his letter, sent on Wednesday.

 

“No. The federal government is also not aware of any other similar or comparable programs as related to your question,” responded Mahmut Ozdemir, the parliamentary secretary for the Interior Ministry.

 

The project Hunko mentioned is run by the Ukrainian coordination center for prisoners of war, with the cooperation of the defense ministry and intelligence service. The program’s spokesman Vitaly Matvienko toldthe US-funded broadcaster Current Time last October that Russians who surrender “can apply for asylum in Germany and the Netherlands,” whose governments have “previously said that they are ready to accept such prisoners of war.”

 

Kiev’s offer “has obviously turned out to be a fake,” Hunko told NDS, but added that the idea itself makes sense, and that Die Linke wants Berlin to set up an actual asylum program for war objectors – from Russia and Ukraine alike.

 

Ozdemir’s response doesn’t just mean that the Ukrainian government has been less than honest, however. It also casts doubt on the public pronouncements of his own ministry from September last year, after Moscow announced a partial call-up of reservists.

 

On September 23, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser offered political asylum to “anyone who courageously opposes Putin’ regime” – as quoted by her spokesman, Maximilian Kall – while government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said that Germany wanted a “viable solution” for the anticipated influx of Russian deserters. Meanwhile, Justice Minister Marco Buschmann tweeted that “anyone who hates [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s path and loves liberal democracy is warmly welcomed in Germany.”

 

How many – if any – Russians actually tried to avail themselves of this offer, or the Ukrainian program, remains unclear.
